Ironsi: The Army, Power, Politics and the Igbo Question
Guest:
Chief Chuks Iloegbunam, author of Ironsi: The Army, Power, and Politics. He was Chief of Staff to Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State. He was also Media Adviser to Mr Obi.
Ironsi was Nigeria’s first military Head of State. He was killed in Ibadan in the July 1966 counter coup led my northern officers. In this book, as in this interview, Chuks Iloegbunam goes beyond the individual level and the web of intrigues that cost General Aguiyi-Ironis his life.
He blames Nigeria's farcial democratic enterprise, condemns the excesses of the political entrepreneurs responsible for the status quo and posits political restructuring that is based on a brand-new, autonomous, constitution as a design for drilling water out of the current pervasive aridity.
Interview: July 2024

The most likely reason why Sir Ahmadu Bello didn’t act on Akintola’s warning about a coup was his mis calculation that his own coup might have been the one being rumored or that his coup would be the one that would preempt any other coup in the pipeline.

Not entirely a comprehensible account, but definitely the most coherent and cohesive of the entire interviews that I have seen of some of these old folks. I loved particularly when he said that “Gowon needs to make peace with his conscience”. These class of men that led this country since after independence failed ultimately! Kogi state have a big landmass why did Gowon and co still took part of Igbo people and gave them to Kogi state, Cross river have a big land mass why did they still carved part of Igbo people to that state even when Igbo land still have small landmass. Chief Iloegbunam. Mazi, there is a point in the so-called issuance of £20, to Igbo men, after the Civil War, that I have always found erroneous. Was the money, actually, given to every man? According to my information and belief, it was not given to every man. First of all, you have to have had a bank account and, also prove it and,if not, you got nothing. Secondly, even if you have a bank account and, there was evidence that you withdrew even a penny, when the war became imminent, you would be excluded. My conclusion, therefore, is that the so-called £20 was not given to every Igbo man. If not, I stand to be corrected, so that I will be informed, otherwise. Thank you.

The issue about 20 pounds was an Igbo victimization. The beneficiaries of 20 pounds were those having money in Igbo banks which have no Nigeria currency to give. Those Igbos bank customers with other banks, received their money in naira (Nigerian currency). Igbo banks cheated their customers giving their customers useless currency. This fact was reported by a very Igbo functionary who witnessed the evil perpetrated by Igbo bankers on Igbo.

It was only Azikwe that wanted the current system one unitary constitution. @@Eziokwubundu-f5w My take is true federalism. Let every state or region control their resources and be the custodian of their culture and destiny and also write their own history. Let every citizen serve Nigeria through their own state or region and if you choose to go to another state or region, you will abide by the rules and regulations in that state. We do not need to trust each other as history have shown that we will never anyway. Let all our relations be official and written down agreed upon and signed by all so that we all know when we cross the line. Let everything about our relationships (state of union you may call it) be written down and based on agreement. This is how to ensure mutual respect, equality and justice. I don't want any Hausa man or Ibo man to trust me, and I don't want to base any relationship with a Hausa or Ibo man on Trust rather I want our relationships and terms of union to be clearly written down, agreed upon and signed by all of us. This is the way to ensure mutual respect, equality and Justice. We cannot be waiting to Trust each other, it has never work and it will never work. I have been asking that question. Why was Ironsi killed for the same Decrees 34 that Gowon couldn't stop? It wasn't because of the Decree 34 that Ironsi was killed. He was killed because they had already branded the coup as Igbo coup,so killing Ironsi was a revenge on the Igbos. That's one argument. How is it possible to kill somebody for the same thing you continued after? You killed somebody for something you considered as a crime and when it was your turn to abolish the crime, you continued with it. Does it make sense? Another explanation was that they didn't know that the army couldn't use the constitution to rule a country. That was the first time a coup d'etat took place in Nigeria,so they didn't have any rudimentary knowledge of coups. Even the ordinary government subject we did in the secondary school told us that an unelected person can't rule with the constitution. The military in government is an aberration so they can't possibly rule with the constitution. The military operates on a single high central command, one single source of leadership. That's why all the military coup d'etat in Africa opted for a unitary system. There's no military coup in Africa or even in Latin America where the constitution wasn't abolished to make way for military Decrees, edicts and military pronouncements. We should stop telling lies to the people. We are no longer in the era of the propaganda of the Yoruba press.

Ironsi as the benefactor of the coup messed Nigeria up to date. As a career soldier, he should have restored order and back the continuation of the civilian system. But, the lure of power is too strong for him to resist. If he did that, the culture of Military rule would not have been ingrained. Another mistake is why did he keep the perpetrators of the 1966 coup in detention for over a year. That level of mutiny demands immediate redress in the military parlance. His political misadventure is the introduction of unitary constitution. The problem caused by that constitution is still evident today. Also, he did not perceive the urgency need of action to set things right, that there is trouble in the land. I see reason why Danjuma will refer to him as couch major general. From my research on his style and contribution, he appears to be incompetent, and rather, ceremonial figure at the best. Pity that they all have to be wasted for nothing.

The problem with a lot of Nigerians is not seeking the truth, hence you keep spreading lies in the 21st century aka Era of Information. 1) Ironsi was not even in power for more than 6 months before he was killed, how are you saying that the January 1966 coup leaders were kept in jail by Ironsi for over a year?. 2) You should go look up the real meaning of Unitary System as it's being practiced in Europe, even UK and Ghana have been practicing Unitary System for years. What Ironsi gave Nigeria is Unitary Republic and it's not this Centralize System that Gowon and Awolowo gave Nigeria. Why is it only in Nigeria that Unitary System is Misinterpreted??. 3) Ironsi Unification Decree Left : A) Regional Autonomy Intact B) 50:50% Resource Control Intact. He only Centralized the Civil Service to promote Unity in Nigeria. Ironsi and Fajuyi were killed in the July 66 Coup, Gowon took over and appointed Adebayo Adeyinka who succeeded Fajuyi as the Western Region Governor, how would some Nigerians accuse Ironsi of Dismantling Regional System when Gowon Ruled Nigeria with Regions until May 67 when He created States?. Why did Gowon find it difficult to deal with Ojukwu when Ojukwu said he was never going to see Gowon as a Head of State?. Gowon could do nothing to Ojukwu until he created States and removed Autonomy from the States. 4) Gowon dismantled Regions and Replaced them with States. A) Gowon then removed Autonomy and Resource Control from the States. Guess who helped Gowon make this mess? None other than Obafemi Awolowo. It is very wrong and Hypocritical for Nigerians to still blame Ironsi for the mess made by Gowon who is still alive. If what Nigeria has been practicing is Unitary Republic as Ironsi did, we would have no agitations at all. You can take your time to read about Unitary System and countries practicing Unitary System in the world, you'd be surprised at your discovery. I am very open to questions and educative debate with facts

Saying that the Unification was right, but not the appropriate time is like, we haven't learn anything. Try hard convincing Yoruba and Northerners that it was not an Igbo coup. These Igbo commentators should just let sleeping dogs lie instead of reopening old wounds. Nigeria is potentially an economic and political powerhouse if we get our governing structure right. That should be our focus. Let us go back to an ethnic based regional arrangement where the constituent parts will compete economically and we can rotate the federal governing structure amongst the ethnic units. We can also try decentralised regional military commands that will contribute the best soldiers on secondment to a federal army. Let us come up with good ideas to solve our present day problems.
