Thanks, good video. Another use of the INS systems in aircraft is for the orientation of satcom antennas used for in-flight connectivity. We grab the data off the ARINC 429 bus or equivalent, depending on aircraft type and use that and other info, along with local rate gyros and accelerometers to very accurately point the antenna towards the desired satellite. In normal operation the antennas also perform closed loop tracking of the satellite to eliminate any offsets that accumulate over the flight duration.

The drift rate may well be cumulative, but it cannot be assumed to be constant or linear because in such a case a correction factor could be added to give a more accurate position after the INS had been calibrated. So the performance of INS is frequently rather better than implied by the drift rate. Modern optical systems using laser gyroscope sensors are capable of circumnavigating the Earth with cumulative errors of just a mile or two.
@AviationTheory
@AviationTheory Год назад
Hi Michael, it is true that the drift rate is variable, since it depends on several factors such as the precision of the initial alignment of the system, the elapsed time, and the maneuvers executed by the aircraft during flight. For this reason, since there is no way to determine the exact drift rate, a predetermined linear conservative value is used as reference.

Very good indeed. One question: With regards to the INS, manual input needs to be performed for initial position. What is the reference source for this initial position? A map location with lat. and long. coordinates?
@AviationTheory

Hi! Yes, the coordinates of each parking position can be found in the airport charts.

what happens if you turn on the IRS mid air?
@silverlining6824
@silverlining6824 Год назад
Here is an explanation to a 5 year old. Suppose you are playing hide-and-seek in your house. You are blindfolded. How would you avoid bumping into a wall? You begin at the door. You know the corridor would lead you into the kitchen in about 15 steps. Then, to the right, there is a refrigerator, slightly to it left is an island. Those are the movements and turns recorded in memory. Then you start counting your steps and turns…
@DrHarryT
@DrHarryT Год назад
Doesn't the IRS also use GPS data to help correct for drift? Three or more GPS satellites with their atomic clocks can accurately pinpoint location to within a few feet which is much more accurate than .6Nm.
@AviationTheory
@AviationTheory Год назад
Hi Harry, you are correct! In modern PBN systems with multiple sensors, GNSS is used as reference to "re-align" the IRS (Correct for the drift). However, if there is not a GNSS available/installed, the IRS will behave as shown in this video.

It confuses me. 'The determination of true north (by means of earth rotation) is detected by the lasergyroscopes'. Isn't detected by the accelorometers as either or both of the X and Y accelorometers are detecting the earth rotational force. Of which the amount of X or Y acceleration can be used to determine the present heading and therefore the true north?
@AviationTheory
@AviationTheory Год назад
Hi Danny! Actually, the earth rotates at a constant rate (it does not accelerate), so the rotation can’t be detected by using the accelerometers. Instead, since gyros remain rigid in space once they are turned on, they are able to detect the rotation of the earth in space. I hope it is clearer now 😁

9:40 "Does not need to be on a level platform." WHAT????? Yeah no, it has t be on a precisely mounted platform, not just any jury rigged platform. For instance, no sheetmetal repair can cause the platform to vary from the factory setting. There is a complicated procedure for installing or repairing it's mounting platform.
