The premiere episode of the 1967 animated series broke new television ground, and did a good enough job that people still sing the theme song today. What made it so popular and enduring? Irving starts taking a look.

Seeing this on my homepage was a pleasant surprise. I've heard the theme song before, seen the memes, but not the actual show in question. This should be fun.

Switching over to Marvel, now, I guess. Spider-Man has a special place, in this household. I was always a DC kid, and specifically a Batman kid. Mother's favorite was Spider-Man. Unlike today, though, there was no competition. We enjoyed both DC and Marvel. She'd sing the theme to this show, on occasion, and my dad would sing the '66 Batman theme, ever so often. Yes, it was a weird household, but I wish Marvel and DC fans could get along like that, these days.

I was a Marvel guy all the way. I read the occasional Superman or Batman but that was about it. By the time I moved out of Stockton and went to college in Montana, I had a complete collection of Marvel comics from FF #1 (autographed by Jack Kirby, no less!) through about 1972. I took a little bit of a hit when I sold it because I needed to move it quickly, so I got around $2500 for the whole mess. It was worth about twice that, but that's what happens when you sell directly to a shop. Still, it paid for college. (That gives you an idea how long ago this was!)

I did catch fleeting glimpses of the FF cartoon during its network run, and then saw it in its entirety years later. By the way, the intro does have an opening narration. It's actually better than that one from 1978 with Herbie the robot.

I never saw that one, but I do remember the narration in the FF theme. I just found it boring.

Ah, the classic 1960s animated Spider-Man show. Yeah, it's a catchy theme. I mean, Michael Giachinno did the full orchestra version of it when scoring "Spider-Man: Homecoming" (before shifting to his own original music. It's not the first time the MCU has used themes from their animated shows (Tony Stark had the Iron Man theme as his ringtone way back in the kickoff to the MCU, "Iron Man"). I recognized it, but that theme didn't have the popularity of the Spider-Man tune. Spider-Man, of course, was one of the pioneers of making a living by taking selfies. J. Jonah went all-in on selling newspapers based on hating a single person. Interestingly, over the years, his character seems to be more and more... fringe, going from respected newspaper publisher to either operating a tabloid, or (now more frequently) a sort of fringe social media personality with a podcast or RU-vid channel who managed to latch onto a winning concept in hating Spider-Man. Doctor Octopus remains a megalomaniac who tries to turn four extra arms into world domination. I do recall reading somewhere that this series had a fairly limited budget, and some of the later episodes had stuff recycled from other animated series (if it's weird and doesn't feature a regular Spidey-foe, that's probably why). That's why they recycled the footage of Spider-Man in the chains, as it showed both him and Doc Ock in one frame, and they probably figured kids wouldn't notice they didn't spring for a new shot with Spider-Man in the cage and Doc Ock revealing his evil plan. I do recall some of that Fantastic Four series. I liked animated shows as a boy, and growing up in the Los Angeles area, there were plenty of TV stations that ran old series in the afternoons, usually from 3-5 (plus Saturday mornings was children's programming). I seem to remember Magneto as a villain who had a complete breakdown when he couldn't affect a sword Mister Fantastic brought out. He told him it was made of wood a few seconds later, but Magneto was a beaten man. Yeah, it didn't make sense to me then, and it doesn't make sense to me now.

Tony Stark makes you feel He's a cool exec with a heart of steel. As Iron Man, all jets ablaze He fights and strikes with repulsor rays Amazing armor, that's Iron Man Amazing power, that's Iron Man Those cartoons are in my queue, I just need to gather two more and I'll be ready to make fun of them.

I watched syndicated re-runs of this Spider-Man show even before Spider-Man & His Amazing Friends hit NBC. I enjoyed it, and I'm not usually a Marvel fan. Iron Man's my favorite Marvel hero. Shame what the comics have done to him in recent years. As someone mentioned, the Hanna-Barbera Fantastic Four were adaptations from the comics. I first saw that show as part of an anthology of HB superhero shows, Hanna-Barbera's World Of Super Adventure, also in syndication. It was my least favorite of the offerings and I was never an FF fan of the comics or other shows either. Spider-Man has an interesting history. Originally rejected by Marvel editors at the time, Stan Lee shoved it into the final issue of the horror anthology Amazing Fantasy (formerly Amazing Adult Fantasy--no, not that kind of "adult") and fans responded so well he got his own comic. Lee won that fight. There's always been a mild horror angle to Spider-Man if you think about it, and that could be tied into why.

I started collecting comics in 1973, and Marvel was my favorite. I used to love this series as a kid, although watching it years later, I see how delightfully silly and cheesy it is. But you're being way too hard on the 1960s Fantastic Four cartoon. It was a very accurate adaptation of the FF during their glory days of the wonderful Stan Lee and Jack Kirby run. The stories were taken indirectly from the pages of the comics, and they were great.
@dwashbur

Indeed they were. But they weren't that well done, and I remember the voice acting being bland. Good stories, mediocre execution.

Possibly, subject to time constraints. 40's are a little before my time, but I've been pondering doing the Kirk Allyn Superman serials/movies, too. Lots of that type of thing rattling around in my head. Good thing there's plenty of room for them to rattle.

@dwashbur
@dwashbur 2 года назад
In one of their early comic book encounters, he did. They surgically removed the arms and put them in some kind of secure storage. While he was in prison, Doc Ock worked on his mental control of them and reached a point where he was able to control them even over a distance, he had them break out of their containment, come break him out of *his* containment, and off they went. He was always a fan favorite.

HA! You had me there for a second. Bear in mind, when I started reading Spiderman, Ditko had already left Marvel and John Romita was drawing. I loved his style, and when I went back and read with Ditko's style it just didn't click with me. Something about it, for lack of a better word, seems weird to me. Maybe it's the flow of images in the panel, his near-total lack of things like sharp angles, again I'm not sure just what it is. But like all people, I tend to prefer the one I cut my teeth on. Your Mileage May Vary and that's cool. And thanks for the kind words and the laugh!
@danwills9981
@danwills9981 2 года назад
@@dwashbur I'm with you. When I think of classic Spidey art I default to John Romita. Ditko might have been the original artist but he wasn't that great. His panel layouts were weird and the poses were awkward. Sometimes you'd wonder how Spidey's arms could even bend in the direction he had them in.
