A dive into whether the 22-250 is sufficient for deer hunting. I am personally a fan of the 22-250 and we have a Ruger American Predator in 22-250 as a backup deer camp rifle. It also makes a great Coyote gun for predator control to help your deer herd thrive. #tct #BuckPole

If the 22-250 isn’t sufficient for deer, better tell the truck load I’ve killed over the years with the 22 Hornet that they shouldn’t be dead. It’s all about bullet placement. Anyone who says the 22-250 won’t get it done should try watching the outdoor shows less, and get out hunting more.

Jeff Copenhaver I knew a ranch hand on the Bush family ranch in Florida that used nothing but a Remington 788 .222 and that is a bench shooting round, not a hunting round. I consider all my .22 centerfires deer guns. From my Remington 700 .222 to my Savage Axis .223 and .22-250 and even my 5.56 ARs. Use the right bullets for deer. Soft point bullets. I will say I would prefer neck shots first to shoulder shots but that can be controversial. That is if I don't have a straight on chest shot. I would have no problem with a .22-250 out to 300 yards but its very capable up to 400 yards still. Just the ft/lb energy is best up to 300 yards. It is very flat shooting. However for a dedicated deer rifle I would pick a .25-06. Shoots flat like a .22-250, has the recoil of a .243, and the punch of a .270. Here is one fellow that shoots Whitetail, Mule deer, and Antelope with a .22-250. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4AHan3TYRN8.html

Buckpole,I absolutely love the 22.250.I used to be a cougar guide in utah,and caught a huge tom for a christenson,arm,s employee killing a huge tom cougar i treed for them,using a carbon wrapped 22,250.They give me a carbon wrapped 22.250 as a bonus.I have killed countless mule deer and whitetail,s,ton,s of bull elk,and several black bear,s including one that was over 600 pound,s with a 22.250.Never once did i wound a single animal that i had get away.I worked on a ranch in utah that was fenced with a high fence where elk were turned loose for hunter,s to hunt.It was not my idea of a real hunt but it paid well.Over the year,s a lot of rich hunter,s would wound elk and i would hunt them down and dispatch them with my 22.250.Funny thing was, most all of the elk wounded were with 338 magnum,s and larger caliber,s. One hunter in particular wounded a 400 class bull by breaking it,s right front leg.We chased it for several hour,s on four wheeler,s and on foot trying to get him another shot.The bull was alway,s ahead of us and every shot he took was about five hundred yard,s away.Finally he looked at my boss i was working for and said do you think you could hit it that far out and finish it.My boss said no i can,t but my helper could if you,ll let him.He said if he can,let him try.I got a rest over my four wheeler seat and at five hundred and twenty yard,s hit him right behind his left ear,dropping him in his track,s.When we were admiring his elk and taking picture,s,he asked me what caliber rifle i was using and handed him a bullet from my pocket.He almost fell over in disbelief.You are kidding me he said.No he,s not my boss replied,look at his rifle.Only drawback i found with such a light bullet, is wind drift in a high wind.You just have to compensate for it.I have shot ton,s of doe,s in tennesse and every single one was a head shot.Let the know it all,s who say it,s not sufficient enough to kill, dare to stand at 500 yard,s and let me shoot at them,not that i would,but i sure wouldn,t, if it was me.ha,ha.

Great info here. I'm a predator hunter but don't want to have to buy a rifle just to hunt deer/antelope. 22-250 may be my rifle of choice. Seems like Accuracy and wicked velocity trumps a larger bore. Great to know with confidence it can ethically do the trick...Thank you.

The 22-250 Remington caliber in any of the 4 or 5 out of the box rifles I have personally shot, is simply a beast you had better not underestimate just on size alone. Using federal premium 60 grain Nosler Partition store box loads, it becomes a Monster that K.O.'s whitetails with ease from 400 yards on in. Neck,behind the shoulder, through the shoulder, doesn't matter. You put the Nosler Partition there and the deer drops, end game. The exit wounds have been mistaken for magnum calibers on more than 1 occasion. So you young guys with your young shoulders enjoy the jolt of your 338rums. Us older more experienced men appreciate the classic Mighty lil 250 as it nears its 100th year of proving the masses deadly wrong.

I use the Remington 700 sps chambered 22-250. Any hunter that's shoots a whitetail knows that the damage to harvest meat is less minimal with this round than a heavier caliber. During and after the 1930s till the laws required center fire calibers for deer, most used 22lr it was all they had or could afford to shoot. My grandfather, dad,and uncle all killed deer with 22 Lr, 36 grain round nose, Winchester....$0.13 for 50 rounds. The 22-250 is plenty of gun for deer. Shot placement is the primary factor, more than caliber.

U can get a 22-250 with like a 1:8 twist an u can shoot higher gr bullets like a 70gr to 90gr bullets. It all boils down to personal preference in the end. Lot of people like the biger calibers like 30cals because of stopping power, then lot of people can do a 22 cals more cuz u dont have all that recoil. And ammo is cheaper. Also remember what twist the barrel is to what grain bullets ur wanting to shoot.
@mcbluecollarguy2382
@mcbluecollarguy2382 4 года назад
Alot of precision rifle shops that build rifles are leaning more towards calibers that arent 30 cals because they can perform jus as good an have alot more shooter friendly features. Like 6 creedmore, 7mm, 24 nosler, almost same amount of power/performance. Can be lighter to carry, shoot just as far, an mainly lot less recoil

For moose I use the 223, 55 grain soft points. But only inside 100 yards. I treat the 223 like a 30-30. They’re similar in terms of performance and terminal performance. Beyond 100 yards I use a 308 or 30-06 for moose. The 22 caliber is great close range back up gun or good for younger hunters. It’s like a 30-30 if the 223 uses a soft point or a good bullet.

I recently bought a Ruger M77 All Weather rifle in .22 Hornet and I can't wait to take it out once the weather breaks. My grandpa was the one who gave me the 22-250 before he passed away. He used that rifle for everything from beavers in the dugout at home, deer, moose and coyotes. He shot the deer and moose behind the ear. Didn't matter how far, he was deadly accurate with that M77 mounted with a wide view redfield scope. He once shot a coyote at over 700 yards with it my dad told me.

"Is 22-250 enough for deer?" Yes. Would I ever do that? No, unless for some reason I had to. ANY bullet that goes through the 'boiler room' of a deer is a guaranteed fatal shot. Proper bullet placement is always essential. The key is a bullet that will not blow up on impact. All kinds of hunting bullets will do. That said, I have a dandy .243 and an even better .270. I also have a 6mm Remington and a 6.5x55 Swedish. All are much better deer cartridges with greater kinetic energy. And I do have a .22-250 in a Remington Model 700 BDL heavy barreled varmint rifle I've had for about 35 years. It would be a chore to schlep that thing around all day. But any of my local area farmers or ranchers who want to be rid of a few coyotes know who to call. Robert Ruark, the late great author and hunter wrote a book titled, "Use Enough Gun". While this book deals with African big game, especially the Big Five, It does apply to all game including deer. The recommended minimal foot-pounds of energy for white-tail deer is 1000 ft-lbs. According to this video, the .22-250 has that at 100 yards (1211 ft-lbs) but at 200 yards, falls below at 882 ft-lbs. So, for deer past 100 yards, the .22-250 is not enough gun. With excellent bullet placement, it will work out to 150-200 yards but I believe an ethical hunter should ensure that the minimum 1000 ft-lbs is there out to any distance that you might find yourself shooting at a deer.

I’ve taken deer out past 400 with my Tikka T3 lite and a TC Contender. Shooting both 55 grain boat tail hollow point and 55 grain ballistic tips. I have 3 rifles in 22-250 REM and love all of 3. 405 yards on a broadside doe, turned the heart and lungs into a jello mush. She ran about 60 yards and piled up. 22-250 is my go to rifle for most everything I hunt in Texas. Shot placement is key. A marginal shot with a 215 grain 300 Win Mag on a deer at 75 yards won’t kill it. Shoot a caliber that you shoot very accurate and comfortable and you’ll kill a lot more animals.

Yes, 223 Rem & 22-250. I hunt deer & hogs with both. With that said, I prefer deer/hog hunting with a 30 caliber or bigger in just about any flavor of caliber bigger or equal to 30 cal. But, on occasion, I do like to sit on the ground with a light weight 223 or 22-250 about 35 yds downwind of the deer/hog trail. Try it, it's a blast & both the 223 & 22-250 at close range has plenty of Energy with a proper shot placement.

I got 22 seconds into your video, and yes I would and do hunt white tailed deer with a 22-250. I catch a lot of a hard time from other hunters for shooting deer with my 22-250, and hear things like you need to go with 6.5 Creedmoor. But, I’ve killed more pigs and deer with my 22-250 than with any of my other guns and it drops them dead in their tracks. But, it depends on shot placement. If you hit them right behind the shoulder, your good, no tracking. If you slip up and shoot off target and hit them in the ass for example, you’ll be doing some tracking… From 100-150 yards with a 22-250 with a 55gr bullet with a good shot, you shouldn’t have a problem. I use Remington Express bullets in 55gr. The problem now being finding that ammo. I’m about to start reloading my own bullets. But yes, you can kill white tailed deer with a 22-250. Good luck, nice video.

But my dad decided to try some different ammunition last rifle season, he chose ppu 55 grain sp 22-250, and both of the deer he shot in the lung dropped hard. so apparently ppu makes a better 22-250 hunting load than Remington.

Shot a spike two years ago at 75 yards with one. I saw two doe and that spike playing together and quite occupied so I literally did a crawl/sneak on them - really just to see how close I could get. At 75 yards the biggest doe acted skittish and started to flag. I lay stone still and hoped for the best. The spike went up and started cavorting around her and the doe lost consciousness of that thing laying in the grass. It seemed like it took an hour to get my cheek on the stock and get good eye relief in the weird position I was in. Savage rifle with bull bbl and bipod so it held good and I squeezed a shot into the neck. My load was a Nosler Partition that I loaded up “weak” maybe 5-7% under full max. That spike dropped like a sack of potatoes. I’ve witnessed a guy shoot a buck that weighed 200 on the scale and he hit it in the lungs with a 22-250 using my Nosler load. It ran 50 yards and died. Last - I shot a 250 pound hog with same load. One shot one kill on that hog. Hit it high just behind the shoulder. It collapsed right there and kicked a bit like they usually do but it was dead as dead can be. 22-250 any good on game? You bet. If you can shoot right. Plus I stack the deck with my Nosler Partition load.

Body shots are limited to 25-35 yards. But with a 22/250 I’d feel confidant taking a deer out to 300 yards with a head shot. And body shot about 250 yards. It’s pleanty to of power to take deer. And accuracy is not a problem. Just remember to keep your rifle clean and you shouldn’t have any issues taking the buck of your dreams within a reasonable distance. Given the shot is not in the bush. Other than obstacles the only other issue is having time to choose your shot and success will depend on your patience. A 22 cal bullet at 22/250 velocity is very dependent on shot placement and confidence that comes with experience.

Having made a spectacular 380 yd shot on a 2X2 mulie many years ago, that looked like it was struck by lightning,,, I would have to say no, no, NO! Hunting isn't about long range, or killing just to do it. You must respect the game, and 55Gr is marginal.

The moral of the story is to check your state and local laws carefully before you go hunting. While the 22-250 can certainly take down a deer, it may not be legal to do so in your state/locality. Hunt safely and legally.

22-250 is simply underestimated i love it so much I have 1 and am geting a second 200 is max range 600 the bullet won't brake a ribs I 200 it passed threw but pin prick so did the outher 2 shots out to 400 and the 4th shit did not brake a rib I found only one bullet but I still love the bullet 100 and under big hols

22-250 is usually sufficient for a Deere, I usually use a .308 for Caterpillars. It's too bad I didn't get a Komatsu tag in the draw this year to try out my new .270 most of the ones I saw were too close to the road anyway. Well placed shot to the radiator. Sometimes you have to track the antifreeze for a few miles

The bad thing is a lot of guys say this 300 I could shoot him any where and he will go down and I hear this a lot and then the see my little carbine pack rifle and they say what are you going to shoot with that? My Remington model 600 in a 222 full jacket hollow point at 52 grain and deadly out 200 yrds and my longest shot to date is 393 yrds and the 8 point buck was standing on a power line and the buck was standing and a straight frontal shot so my 222 drops about 6-7” so I put my cross hair on the top of his head and no wind and I was laying on the ground with my rifle threw a hog wire fence an squeezed of a perfect shot the bullet took the hair off his chin no blood and it went threw his neck and spine and you could feel the mushroomed bullet just under his skin on the back of his neck .

it's the only gun I use for deer hunting I'll shoot a deer way past 200 with my handloads I have proven that deer don't take a step with a good shot at 250 yards people use the 223 and the 22-250 is way more powerful than that do you always get a passthrough not with the right bullet for hunting no but it dumps all the energy in the vitals I've even taken a direct shoulder shot and that deer didn't go anywhere I've made a bad freehand shot completely missed the vitals by 6" didn't hit any bone and just that shockwave from it being so fast turn them to jelly literally I couldn't tell what they were that deer also dropped right there you don't need a 30-06 or 300 win mag for deer you just need a little 52g bullet moving really fast every kill has been more ethical since I switched to that caliber
