Competitive IMO has a bit to do with disposable income and keeping up with lists and meta. A average player just can't do that and it is really big buzzkill for the competitive scene. I have seen many players are super into the hobby but just fear being competitive scene purely because of money. Once again if GW lowered its costs their comp scene and collections would be doing much better.
It used to be that people built army’s over years and even decades, adding a unit here and there, changing things around a bit with new editions, etc… Now it feels like people treat 40k lists like Magic decks.
I think they should permanently have space Hulk in circulation. It seems ridiculous that they don't. The paranoid part of me thinks they just can't monetise it as much as open ended tabletop games.
A lot of 10th edition feels way, way too arcadey to me, especially compared to HH. The equivalents to Sustained hits, lethal hits and devastating wounds always helped to make units stand out, but now its given out ro every tom, dick and harry.
@WorHammer40k I still collect some of the models. the hobby side is still enjoyable and I use them in several other games. as for 40k skirmish, we have a rules set that has alternating activations and considered simultaneous game turn. it plays very different and nobody ever gets tabled first turn. also, first turn, both players get to use everything that they started the game with. casualties aren't removed until the very end of the turn, in which both players remove pieces at the same time. there is also, no 30min+ waiting in order to participate. both players are constantly performing activations.
@WorHammer40k no, OPR still uses the IGYG format. I won't touch that system. this is a self made system the incorporates elements from several successful tactical war games. the game turn format: 1 - initiative 2 - movement 3 - action phase 4 - damage effects 5 - morale 6 - final actions - next turn - 1 - initiative... while the game turn may look similar, how it plays is drastically different. 1 - initiative each unit commander ( not player) rolls initiative. LD + 1D10 = initiative value. ALL units on the table list their initiative from highest to lowest. 2 - movement going in reverse initiative order and separated by unit type, lowest initiative move before higher initiative. first - ALL ground foot troops next - ALL ground vehicles and monsters next - ALL flying units 3 - actions this is done in direct initiative order from highest to lowest (regardless of unit type) this includes the following; - direct attacks - indirect attacks - artillery - psychic actions - magic actions - other any inflicted wounds are indicated, but nothing is removed. the wounds don't take effect yet. 4 - damage effects both players check each unit and remove any destroyed pieces. pieces damaged, but not destroyed, make any adjustments caused by the damage. 5 - morale leaders of each unit check to see if the unit continues to fight. 6. final actions players can declare overwatch, reinforcements, withdrawal, unit convergence (combining) and several other activities. the combat mechanic uses the D10, not D6. the attacker uses WS or BS to hit and S or weapons S to see if they can wound. the target uses T plus any armor benefits to survive the damage. that's it! it's fast, easy and most importantly, both players get to use their entire army that's on the table - first turn. both players are constantly engaged and actively participating. nobody is sitting and waiting for the opponent to finish, while only watching helplessly as pieces get removed without ever providing benefit.
40k isn’t competitive focused. It feels that way because the balance sheets etc are the most visible. If you want to play casually, just play casually and ignore meta/comp chats and threads. But, even a “casual league” (or similar) is by definition - competitive. This is a competitive game - its 1v1 and the aim is to win. Just like Connect 4. Chess. Fortnite. If casual players find that not fun, maybe it’s the wrong game for them? Or, just make house rules with your mates/local league. Rule of 1 or 2. Must bring 3 troops. Whatever.
