Is 5-Year-Old’s Hair Too Young to Dye?

Influencer and self-proclaimed ‘cool mom’ Demi Engemann let her 5-year-old Maude skip kindergarten for a mommy-daughter salon day. Demi documented the process by which Maude’s hair was bleached blonde, and uploaded the video to TikTok, where it’s been viewed millions of times. But criticism of her decision to let her young daughter treat her hair has followed, as well. Engemann said, “I don’t regret it.”

5 year olds dont need beauty products to build confidence, they need human interaction and love from their families.
@johnnyBrwn

Exactly, this is the real reason divorce is sky high. Some mothers want to be able to raise their children with no rationality. Just because a 5 y/o FEELs like they need something they shouldn't automatically get it. That little girl won't have any grit or resilience as an adult because her mother is raising her with no emotional capacity to confront life's challenges.

I think instead of bleach she could have bought some colorful hair paint sprays. It's temporary and doesn't damage her hair. Honestly the only problem is just the chemicals may be to harsh because children's hair tend to be alot softer and easier to damage.

We wonder why so many kids have poor self esteem? Because from an early age now, people put way too much emphasis on how someone looks. I won't even let my 14 yo dye her hair. I tell her she is beautiful and she doesn't need makeup or hair dye. She's also not allowed to have social media. I want her to build up her self confidence and know her own worth. She doesn't need someone else to affirm it or try to tear her down. Online bullying is ridiculous these days.

But the question is WHY did she want her hair blond? Usually kids seem to want to dye their hair their favorite colors; the colors they’d choose to draw with, the colors they want their bedroom walls to be. But blond doesn’t really show up in places like that. It usually has more social media, magazines, idealized characters, and beauty model type origins. I’d just really like to ask that mom what her child’s favorite color is, and why she didn’t want to dye her hair that color. That’s what’s concerning, not the dyeing itself. Where did she get the idea for blond hair, and will that exposure cause problems later on.

Now that's what I call a Cool mom. Hair will always grow back. When I ask my mom it took till I was 13 before she let me dye my hair an was still apprehensive about it got my first job at 18 first thing I did was bleach & dye my hair purple an then tell me how unprofessional it is, an I would tell her she should have let me dyed my hair more often when I was a child so I could enjoyed different colors in my hair I wanted to do before going into the work world and being an adult. To conclude all this I dyed my hair excessively for 8 and 1/2 years until I was pregnant with my son and now I've just been keeping my hair natural.

I think that this is totally okay. If it was unsafe, the hair dressers wouldn’t have done it. Besides it’s her daughter, and she can do whatever she wants as long ad it is safe, and as far as I’m concerned this process was done safely. If nosy people want to involve themselves in the situation, and tell this awesome mama how to raise her child, then they can pay to support the child. (And by the way this five year old has confidence from this new look, and if she is happy then leave her alone.)

“You can argue probably not but I want her to feel good.” That’s the problem. You’re too feelings led, good parents care for child’s well-being over their feelings. And know that they need healthy care instead of being pandered. Insinuating that she won’t be happy because you don’t give her what she wants is false and you’re just spoiling her and a form of abuse.

I don't think this was a confidence issue, just normal curiosity on the child's part. If she really did see a kid with purple hair, she might be curious how she would look with a different hair color. I do think she's _way_ too young to have her hair dyed, but people need to stop talking about "accepting your natural beauty", because that's got absolutely nothing to do with dying your hair.

In my opinion I feel as if her mother was not in the wrong letting her daughter dye her hair . I say this because I seen a lot of comments saying “well my mom didn’t let me do this when I was 5” like ok that’s you not her if her mother wants her daughter to get her hair dyed so it be . It happend and it can’t be takin back so just let it go. The mother probably did this to build up he daughters self confidence even more so she can pass it on .
