Is 53 Too Old to Become an Airline Pilot 

I am 51, just completed my first lesson today. Your video and fellow followers are great inspiration to me. Will keep you posted, how things are progressing from my end.

40 year old mainline guy here. Some things to think about: It’s gonna be tough to find a quality of life you enjoy making good money with less than 10 years in industry before being forced out. Be prepared to move to base. Commuting is pure headache. So are crash pads. I made 11.25 an hour after taxes for 70 hour guarantee at my first regional 15 years ago. Pay has gone up for sure but so has inflation. Don’t forget you will need some Seniority to modify your schedule. Otherwise you will get to enjoy Dallas-Tulsa or La Guardia-Dulles turns all summer. Weekends and holidays, camping trips, family time… goodbye. Hello Raleigh! Hello Sacramento! Mainline carriers still need you to have at least 3000 hours flight time. That is where the money is. Apply… but keep in mind 1500 hours in a Cessna won’t get you through an interview. You have to stay healthy. And it’s tough. One wrong medical exam and you’ll be faced with a set back of months to years fighting the FAA to get back in the air. Training is fast and furious although different from when I went through. Checkrides seem to be easier and more forgiving. Unless you work for Atlas. No AQP. Atlas still has high demands. If money isn’t your goal and just getting into a jet is… go for it. If time with your family isn’t important in your mid 50s then by all means start flying professionally. I’d say keep it a hobby.

Hi Trent, I am a 30 year Captain at the world's largest regional airline. Please heavily educate yourself on what the life style that a new airline pilot has. Many years ago all I wanted was for my son to become a pilot, I mean his middle name is Jett, but convinced him to go into engineering instead. I would recommend you fully look into the drastic change you would have. Like zero vacation! Very little time at home for family. Spending the next ten years in a hotel over Christmas. Basically, it's nothing near what it used to be!

You nailed this. I started at 46. Fast forward 5 years and this month, at the age of 51, I was able to hang up my IT keyboard and started at a freight company as an SIC (Second In Command). It's low pay, for now. The returns will start to happen quickly. There are many hopes and dreams buried in graveyards. (I think that was Zig Ziglar or Norman Vincent Peale or someone of that ilk?). Many in my circles thought I was down right crazy to switch careers. They asked me how I could do such a thing. Well, rather than looking up and thinking..."I wonder", I started asking questions and put one foot in front of the other. A gentleman I used to listen to on a podcast once said, "Time spent flying isn't subtracted from your lifespan". There is NOTHING that compares to being in the sky! I wish you the best!

Trent-Glad I found your video. I am 52 yrs old and just started flight training! (Literally just started, have about 4-hrs currently) I raised my kids and paid my dues to corporate America. I have always wanted to fly and now with this shortage I am looking forward to spending my career 3.0 doing something I love! The fact that I can still have a 10-15 year career flying and make good money totally justifies it for me. Looking forward to following your journey and possibly crossing paths one day.

I’ve been through training with a guy who was just starting at 59. It’s never too old. We had a 61 year old at my date of hire in the big 3 airline I’m at.

This is an inspiring video. I'm about to turn 55 and have my instrument rating, 450 hours, and I own an airplane. I hem and haw about whether or not I want to pursue this path. Every time I think I've made a decision that I'm not going to do it, something else comes up - like this video - that makes me reconsider. Good luck on your journey. Maybe I'll follow you.

Really enjoyed your perspectives. I'm 48, got my PPL last year and my IFR rating this spring. Starting my commercial training soon (not necessarily with the intent of shifting careers) and have been wondering "what if" more frequently lately. Age is nothing but a number. That’s not just a cliche. I just a few years thousands of airline pilots who are turning 65 will be forced into retirement. The airlines already don’t have enough pilots. Either they’re going to lobby Congress to extend the retirement age for pilots again, or they’re going to have to find a way to get younger, experienced pilots to fill those positions. It’s neither cheap nor easy to become a commercial pilot with all the required hours. I suspect we’re going to see a huge pilot shortage and some interesting new opportunities in the years ahead. Trent, Glad I ran into this video! I'm 52 and neck deep in my instrument/commercial rating at a flight school. I often wonder what the heck I'm doing when I go to the school and see all of the "kids" there. I believe I'm the oldest one in training. The timing of seeing this couldn't have been better because I've been a little discouraged lately. Not going to lie, it's hard! It's nice to know there are people in similar situations. 47 Year Old, I start with my Private Pilots Training very soon. Thank you for confirming my same thoughts on this.

To clarify, for Commercial you need 250 Total hours, 100 of which must be PIC. Then of course there are the other requirements such as night/instrument/long cross country, etc...

Trent - we're so similar! I'm 47. I started flying again in my early 40's (got my PPL in my 20s). Stopped again to focus on my business. I too am an entrepreneur. Things got busy again, but started thinking about it hard after I sold my company back in '19. In '22 I exited, been building a new agency / coaching business, but I still think about flying all the time. It's been a dream of mine since I saw Top Gun in 1986. I've got ~120 hours and started working on my IR. Haven't flown in a few years, but damn seeing this gets me thinking!

Hi from an aviator. Just a suggestion but at this point in your life why not just fly privately. It will be a lot easier and cheaper. You will be able to fly when you feel like it not won't have to when you don't want to. Not being pressured to fly in bad weather, not being pressured to fly with minimum fuel to save on cost, be home when you want to be home, fly where you want when you want. I understand your enthusiasm, but like Mime said it is a difficult life actually. The guys you know who are similar to your age who fly for the majors started when they were younger and built a tolerance for this life style. You don't have that tolerance. Think you ca build this tolerance form scratch at 53?? Also just getting your bare bones licenses and ratings from a flight school is just the start. Airlines will need to put large amounts of money into youth get your qualified to fly bug jets. Honestly by the time you get your licenses and build some time in your log book you will be 55 or 56. How much money will the airlines want to spend on you with at most 8 or 9 years of service. I appreciate your passion for aviation and encourage you to fly but honestly sir the idea of becoming an airline pilot when you are 53 and have no flighty experience is just well, not really a realistic goal to have. you have money obviously, get your private, buy your own plane and fly privately until your heart is content. I turned 53 in January. I got into flight because of wanting to be a helicopter pilot. Hoping to get a job doing some type of rescue if possible. I purchased MSFS 2020 and though I'm still into helicopters, planes have now become the primary. I've been a sim "pilot" since 2022. And it's been great learning and doing online flying. Alone and sometimes with a group. I'm very happy you made this video. I haven't had major doubt about becoming a pilot. But, I have wondered a little here and there though if I should go for it. I decided I will. Now it's simply a money thing. Thanks for making this video!

Just the other day I googled “At what age are you to old to become a pilot.” It wasn’t looking good! So thank you for the inspirational video! I cannot fund such an accelerated program, but I am going to give it a go and schedule a class 1 medical.

like seeing all these comments from people 50 and older starting their flight training. i am 49 and am starting. the flying part my instructor says i am great at. almost ready to go solo and i am only at around 12 hrs. it is the written part that is slowing me down. so i have cut back on the flying part and focus on the studying part.

Im 53 and 50hrs into PPL training. Just found this video LOL! The regs and route to take to get qualified is much different here in Canada. Also more expensive! But the desire to change up your life is the same!

Trent - I'm 51yrs old and I've been working in Information Technology for the last 25years. When I was a teenager (MANY years ago...haha) I was in Civil Air Patrol where we flew around quite a bit in a Cessna 152. We did stalls with the floating penny, spins, touch and go's etc. I got the chance to take the controls, do a couple of takeoffs and some other flying basics. Being in CAP ignited my passion for flying. I used to play MS Flight Simulator 2.0 back in the days and just picked it up again but there's quite a big difference with MSFS 2020. Doing this re-ignited my passion for flying so I'm setting up my discovery flight to start my real (not virtual) aviation journey. Naturally I started to think of aviation as a potential career 2.0 but I thought I was too old. Looks like that's not the case so I'm going to follow my dream. Thank you for the inspiration! PS I've hated every second of flying commercial in my adult life but I'm sure that will change if I'm sitting up front!....haha

I'm 54 and prepping for my PPL check-ride. Alas, I can only get a Class III physical, but still it's great to see I'm not alone in being late to flying.

Hey Trent, i,m glad I found your video! I’m also 53 and decided to go back after 12 years of pause. I currently hold IFR/ commercial multi and working on my Single engine commercial . Not so easy as used to be when younger but your video gave the boost I needed! Thank you. You got my subscription.

The most important thing for you isn’t age. It’s your attitude, you have an attitude of “no matter what there is always a positive/ I won’t give up”. That to me is the number 1 aptitude of a pilot. You have inspired who knows how many! All id say to you is never give up, there might be a few bumps along the way, just keep going. Set your eyes on the prize, honestly 1 year a year and a half you’ll be in a Jet.

This is a great video. I’m 54 and have wanted to switch careers as well. I hold a PPL and I am working towards my instrument. Like some of the other commenters, I’m not able to quit the day job and attend flight school full time so it will take me somewhat longer to achieve the dream. I think like you in that I want to have a great paying career longer than my current career. I’m a firefighter now and am not sure how much longer I can be effective in that line of work and heck, I just love flying. Thanks for this video. It is truly inspiring. Great video! I’m about to turn 47. The last 25 years I’ve work between LE and, last 17 years, in medical. I’m burnt out and I’m sick of death. I’m at that career change crossroads too, I’ve always loved aviation, and now I’m just started groundschool. Finally, I feel like I’m pursuing what I should have been 30 years ago. It’s helped with mentally healing dealing with the trauma I have seen over the years to focus on airplanes. I’m super stoked, I look forward to following your journey as well.

Wow - this has been inspiring. I just turned 57 and just getting re current after not flying for 30 years. 350 hours and Instrument rated. Went to school for commercial pilot and ran out of money (hmmm not sure how that happened 🤔) I have wanted to get back to flying for so many years I thought I was past prime. But indeed today is so different for the reasons you mentioned. I am so encouraged by how many others are in the same boat as I am. I was planning on just getting my CFI to help justify the cost of flying recreational. If I could fly professionally that would be a dream come true.

Former combat wombed vet back in 2011. Ever since basic training at FT SILL OK 1987. Artillery. Then unit at Ft Lewis WA I ALWAYS WANTED TO FLY N DO IT COMMERCIAL. Now am 58. No money . Still want to do it . I guess some dreams can’t come thru . Great vid info ya dis here .

I want to consume more inspriation and info!!!! Like so many below, I put off making a change and never followed my passion/dream while raising a family. Soon to be 54 with Commercial, Instrument, Multi but just getting back into currency. About 400hrs, just joind a club and already flown more hours in 1 month than I did in the last 5 years combined. 14hrs in under 30days.

So inspiring, Trent. At 37, I thought I was too old. I've only had two TIF's a number of years ago so, I would be starting from scratch. Fear was the biggest reason for me not going ahead. Money was the second but, this has definitely lit the fire in me again.

Hi Trent! Thanks for a really insightful video. I've been doing a lot of research on this myself lately and I'm glad to know that you came to a lot of the same conclusions that I had on my own. I'm currently 37 and work in software dev, but have been quite burnt out with it for going on about 5 years now. I know I'm not in a position to completely drop my job to pursue flight training as I'm the primary income for my family, however. As a result, I recently decided that I would make a plan to where I could do my flight training on nights and weekends around my work schedule. Originally, my concern was trying to get hired into an airline at the age of 40-45, but you're right. Even if I'm a bit older than pilots that knew they wanted to be a pilot when they were fresh out of high school, I'd still have a good 20 years to work at an airline plus more working corporate after 65, which is more than enough to justify the cost and effort especially since I know pursuing my passion for aviation will put me into a job that I actually enjoy waking up to go do every morning, something I haven't really experienced in a long time. I wish you luck in your career change and maybe, with luck, some day we'll cross paths on the line somewhere!

I’m in my 50’s, I started life as a jet engine mechanic in the Air Force and wanted to get my pilots license then divorce and a few bumps and before I know it I’m in my 50’s wanting to get back in and see where it goes I’ve had a mixture of support and negative feedback Just going to do it anyway and see where it goes

Thousands of hours of flight time as a backs eaters and a 27yr military retirement as a senior officer will hopefully make career 2.0 easier/faster, the Navy firehose training method is all I know. This video just motivated me even more. I have been working on an ambulance for 9 years and this spring will make it ten years. hearing your friend that worked in LE, just got me extremely motivated.

In the fifties, becoming a corporate pilot might make more sense. Like a lot of professions, those entering are expected to take the worst jobs. In commercial aviation that means short-haul puddle-jumpers and red-eyes. A grind like that can be harder to take if you're older and can play heck with your home life. On the other hand, as a corporate pilot you're likely to have less grind and night flights. The only down side might be a need for more flexibility. Rather than scheduling weeks in advance, you may need to show up on short notice.

I've been thinking about going for the commercial and multi engine ratings and pursue a career, but have been on the fence about it. Your video is helping to encourage me to take the plunge. 47 here and got my CFI 4 years ago. Never made the move for a variety of reasons all tethered to some kind of fear. Going through a bit of rediscovery now and this reminded me it's not too late. Thanks for that.

I love flying. 26 yr AF retired pilot,, but I didn’t like living out of a suitcase anymore. 30-40% of my time was with the suitcase. Moved every 3-4 years, didn’t know my neighbors didn’t have many friends. I gave it up to pursue a different career in F&B. 16 years later, I rejoined the aviation community with ppl and working IR rating. Consider the lifestyle you will be pursuing.

I don't know if you'll read this, but I'd love your take. I'm 58, I live in Canada. I'd love to get back into flying, primarily for the love of it. I miss it. As long as the money isn't abysmal, I'd be fine with it. I'm open to various kinds of flying if airline is unrealistic. I'm open to corporate, contract, cargo, almost anything, within reason. I already have 1,177 hours, a multi-IFR, experience in complex aircraft, and 360 hours of single-engine instruction given. I wouldn't mind moving south (sick of winter). - By the way, I've been learning real estate investing. The income potential is awesome, but the fun factor doesn't equal flying for me. I'm sure you understand what I mean. Thoughts?

I worry often about my decisions and if they are the right, wrong, or best ones but the truth is this is my dream and you helped encourage me to get back to training! After almost 30hrs in the military as a flight engineer and navigator I have decided to do the same thing you are doing. I purchased my own plane and fly when I can, a good alternative to working as a flight instructor (at least so far!) Don’t listen to the haters, flying and this lifestyle isn’t for everyone.

I'm leaning for yes, too old. I'm 51, CFI about 600 hours. I'd need to do A LOT of flying to get to the magic 1500, plus maybe got get my multi-engine, CFII to refresh, maybe a type rating... Was always a dream of mine, but for now I fly on my own dime. But why not, if you can take the risk and have the finances, I say go for it.

Hi Trent! I'm a 26 years old architect from Brazil. Ever since I was a teenager, all I wanted to do was to be a pilot. Unfortunately, the costs of flight training in my country are just a sad punch in the stomach. A single hour costs more than 60% for the minimum wage here. But this year I decided to go for it, even though I feel like I'm "wasting time" or like I missed the timming. I don't care if the top of my aviation career is going to be on a commercial jet or teaching younger pilots on a cherokee. I guess it's only late to chase your dreams when you're dead. Corporate pilots schedule varies from a very light to busy schedule I fly average of 12 days per month as a corporate guy

Excited to see where this goes! I have contemplated pursuing flying for an income in some way, but have concluded that I love it so much - I don't want it to be a job. Also the older we are, the more something finicky on a medical could just take it all away in a moment. That said, this is awesome man good luck!

the odds that a US major airline hires you is slim. yes, you can have a shot at a regional and/or local delivery, but no airline wants an old first time pilot who will only have enough time for about ~10 years to work for them.

I am 62 retired in the west coast of Canada. I have always wanted to learn to fly but my wife is scared to fly in a small plane. How to help make her feel comfortable? The million dollar question? Like your youtube videos, keep it up.

I’m 53 and in IT sales. I’m a commercial, multi, instrument etc… the life style of a professional pilot is different than you would think. Travel is hard on you. Following along but ain’t leaving my job making 10x what I ever made flying for a living.

I really appreciate videos like this. Sometimes it's easy to say, had I done this, or that... I did that while sitting at my desk last night talking to a colleague. "You know, I could've been airline pilot by now." .... With all that being said, still working on PPL at 37, and working towards my check-ride. All I can do is to remind myself to keep moving forward. Progress is better than no progress, and who knows what the road may hold along the way, but one thing is certain: the old cliche still applies, I may actually land aviation as a second career, but if I do nothing, than I am 100% positive I won't.

Great video Trent! I am a private pilot (35 yrs. now), but always wanted to make being a pilot my career...never did. I don't know why. In the 80's and 90's aviation was a different animal, low pay, challenging to "make it", kids/family...yada, yada! Excuses! I want to do what you're doing! I want to be a commercial pilot.

My experience as a line captain for many years, the worst pilots I’ve flown with are the late career changers. They just didn’t have the stick and rudder skills that the younger pilots have. If fact the only pilot that actually scared me in an aircraft was a late career changer in his 40’s.
