I bought my iMac (late 2012) from a college surplus a few months ago as well. It was way more than $30, but way less than used iMacs elsewhere. It works super well and I just cracked it open and upgraded to 16 GBs of RAM and then dusted everything.

Built one of these 3 1/2 years ago using an HP 6300 (with 16 GB of RAM) that I had picked up at a university for $100. I already had an SSD lying around and so only paid to add a used GPU. I thought this would just be for fun, but it has been my main desktop machine since then. It took some tweaking, but it runs runs dual monitors flawlessly. As I write this it's running Catalina on one screen and I have Windows running on a Parallels virtual machine on the other. I'm into it for about $150 bucks. Pretty damn amazing for the money.

Whats really astonishing is how he managed to put all this together for those prices.

I built a similar but slightly newer system. I had been a Mac mini user since the first one in 2005. I came across a haswell Dell Optiplex SFF (got it free with the hard drive removed) I decided to try a hackintosh for the first time since the Mac mini was STILL stuck on a dual core Haswell CPU and this was a (free) quad core. Of course, the new Mac Mini was announced about a week later. ANyway, I ended up with the PC, free. SSD $30 for 120 GB. I used a 1 TB hard drive from my wife's laptop (which I removed to install an SSD) I paid around $10 for the kit to install both 2.5 drives in the single 3.5 bay of this SFF PC. I have a GT730 with 1GB DDR5 I bought refurbished for $30. I paid $20 for a bluetooth receiver and about that for a FIrewire card since I still have a few old firewire receivers. I already had a USB M-Audio sound interface so I didn't need to worry about getting the sound working. I had saved 4 GB of Ram from a system I put together a while back that needed 32 bit windows (and the extra 4 GB was wasted) so in the end for around $100 I ended up with a system that is very close to the late 2013 iMac, which still goes for around $600 on ebay. One last upgrade was a 24 inch ViewSonic monitor with a 2560x1440 resolution, the exact same as the iMac this is closest to. That cost about $160. I also added a second Dell monitor, 19 inch 1280x1024 for $5. The system is now a 3.2 ghz Quad i5 haswell (almost twice as fast as the recently discontinued Mac mini base model) 8GB RAM. 120 SSD 1TB hard drive, home folder remapped. Nvidia Geforce Gt 730 I also added a facetime compatible Camera. So I spent about $100 on the PC and about $200 on new peripherals. Combine that with my 150 watt studio monitors and existing USB audio interface and it is a nice system.

Thanks Snazz, you inspired me to build a used PC rather than buying all new parts. Managed to get a Dell Optiplex 790 w/ i5 2400 and 8gb RAM for $75 and bought a new GTX 1050 Ti for about $180. Pretty good prices here in Europe. Had a spare SSD and it works perfectly for gaming and video editing. Might try installing El Capitan or Sierra soon. Cheers

when a $70 pc is better than your $600 one

my local school system throws away their pcs so I got one for free and turned it into a 4k editing hackintosh with the same budget (i7-3770, 16GB RAM, $40 "broken" HD 7950, $30 80 Plus EVGA 600W) Edit: (HDD is reused from the many I have on hand)

It's pretty impressive how well Crapintosh performed. I'm curious to see the Windows comparison in benchmarks and game frames rates. I'd like to know which OS makes better use of these bad specs. (I would assume mac since their high end is usually not super impressive compared to what's high end on PC)

The problem for gaming is not OpenGL. The problem, usually when we talk about Mac (and Linux) with AAA games is that they in reality ship the windows version of the game with a packaged version of Wine (that emulate D3D/DirectX over OpenGL and so make the game performance limited by the CPU and not the GPU). Properly made game should work about equal on DX or OpenGL. Note : Apple have also some real drawback for 3D API compared to Linux and Windows. First, it's limited to OpenGL 4.1. OpenGL 4.1 is supported on Linux and Windows since 2010 but OSX began to support it only in OSX 10.9 (2013) and OpenGL 4.5, with provide more optimized function, is available on Linux/Windows since 2014 on which OSX don't have any support. Also, Linux, Windows, android have Vulkan support since about one year and that, Apple don't plan to support it nether. With is unfortunate, but Apple want to push there own proprietary API, Metal so they will not support other real good API. And Dev who make game (usually for Linux and Windows too), will not lose time on an API that will only work on one platform that have like less than 1% of the market (There is more gamers on Linux than gamers on Apple), they prefer OpenGL or Vulkan so they can port them where they will find more customer (Windows, Linux and consoles) or plain DirectX for the platform with the most gamers. Linux even support D3D9 native too (with OSS drivers /w Gallium-nine). Apple users should class action Apple to force them to include proper 3D API, especially that all the cards that they put in there machines, support them (Vulkan, OpenGL 4.5 +ext). And don't tell me that they can't implement OpenGL >4.1 because there GUI use it and more recent is not compatible.. Because OpenGL is backward compatible if properly implemented... Apple have lot of cash and they are able to support all these great 3D API, they should stop playing the 3DFX game, where not in 1998 anymore.

I am amazed to see that for $70 you can build a computer that's better than what I'm currently using that I just spent over $70 upgrading. Mine's a HP G5460uk with i3-2100 3GHz, 4 GB RAM and Nvidia GeForce GTX 650Ti 1GB, 500 GB HDD, upgraded to with Samsung 830 series 250 GB SSD and 8 GB RAM for what your whole build cost and I can't even get hackintosh to work properly (graphics issues - although I had it working before but reinstalled Windows to for gaming and haven't managed to get hackintosh graphics to work since).

An 850 evo is not an "old" SSD lol it is still Samsung's flagship line of SATA consumer drives. you are very lucky

Could you try and make the smallest hackintosh for as little as possible? A similar budget to this with the style and simplicity of the hackintosh you made with no fans.

I did something similar to this. Bought a Dell Precision T7500, Added a GTX 1060 6GB to it added a 1TB HDD to it as well and boom installed HS on it and runs fine.

You can install a regular PSU on this machine, allowing you to install better gpus... Ive done it, and they work perfectly in osx :). I'll search for the tutorial and post it, hope you could do a follow up with a better gpu.

i built a $25 Hackintosh using a HP DC7900 that came with a monitor, Keyboard, mouse, and a GT 610.

It would cost around $250 for most people to build.

I´m impressed how well it works and how fast it runs. Maybe it´s time for me to build a hackintosh. I´m really impressed.

I am going to have to look into this. Will probably invest in some quieter fans though because I would be using it for music production.

This video has inspired me to take the Hackintosh plunge. I've been considering it for a few years but just not sure that I wanted to fuss that much with the process. Just scored an HP 8300 CMT with 12gb ram, i7 processor, no HD, and it has some kind of video card that I will probably replace with a 1050 TI.... I'm in $150 for the PC, $50 for a HD, and video card coming soon. Better specs then my 2011 iMac 27 (at over $3K) which was fully upgraded at the time and still running well. Can't wait to get it up and running!!!

I went to the U of U Salvage and Surplus and got a Dell Optiplex 9010 for $30. Heres what i got! A Quad Core Intel Core i5, 8GB of ram, a 500GB Hard drive! I put a gtx 1070 into it and it seriously out performs my Macbook Pro 2016 :) Very happy i found out about UOFUSurplus! if you live in Utah i definitely recommend the Surplus!

I still use my mac from 2004, to be honest I don't see it as a waste of money since it works fine.

I've watched this video about 6 times now and I actually built this computer and am writing this on it. The Hackintosh did cost me $170 to make. I bought the HP 6300 for $120 with the same specs. Its actually an amazing computer, and has working wifi, bluetooth, audio, and graphics. Super build. Thanks Snazzy Labs! this is awesome

On the non-standard power supply, it likely wouldn't be difficult to replace it regardless. My folks had an HP before as well years ago where the PS failed. Finding a PS that fit was easy, but then we found it had a non-standard connector for to the motherboard, so we just had to cut off the new PS's connector, cut the wires running out of the old connector, strip the wires, and connect them to each other using a few cheap sort of y-connectors.

Sorry if I'm late, but Ivy Bridge iGPUs were dropped in Catalina, so a bit later than when this video was out, and even then some Ivy Bridge iGPUs were dropped in High Sierra which is still after this video was released. Again, sorry if I'm late, but I have read hackintosh guides so many times I know basically everything lol

I’ve gotten plenty of good computers from my colleges surplus. I almost got a MacPro g5 for like $150. This was like 6 years ago though. I spent like $60 plus the cost of he 5450 and two 2TB seagate barracuda to make a HTPC and it was awesome.

I myself plan to sell my MBP2015(dGPU version) and stay with MacOS with a custom hardware. From what I ve been reading and observing so far. Custom HW and MacOS is a really powerful solution where you squeeze maximum performance from both sw and hw for a good money. Unfortunately this ratio is not provided by buying a brand new iDevice. I really struggle with performance of my MBP. It just wont work with Photoshop properly(brush is slowed, masking is slowed etc... And I am not even talking about having a lot of adjustment layers and smart filters in one psd file :D What you showed right now is just amazing. It shows that you can really and easily browse yTube and have a common office work done on this really cheap setup. Ty for your video.

mac and adobe work together closely to make sure the adobe programs are efficient on there OS.

I got a great deal on one of these PCs with an i7 3770 and 16gb of ddr3 ram out of the box! I only have a gt 1030 I can use on it since I don’t have an adapter to use a psu that can power a bigger card which means I have to use High Sierra. The experience has been fantastic and is currently my main computer, I would like to get a BT/WiFi adapter eventually and hopefully a better gpu but for now everything is great!!!

Gaming on it is kind of misleading though. I ran a hackintosh on my daily computer at one point and reverted back to windows because I would get less than half the frames I did on windows (like from >180 fps on windows to ≤70 fps on macOS. macOS is just horrible for games Edit: Nevermind he says that in the video

I didn't know old SSDs had this problem, tried it on my old Corsair force 3 and it worked.

30 bucks what a steal! I’ve got a dell Vostro 3500 laptop that is supposed to be hacking Tosh compatible but I’ve never been able to find a hackentosh build for it.
