I've always loved this brand, regardless of the price, I feel they're definitely worth it. I've had a Bronx, and a Thunderbolt (isn't produced anymore), and currently wear a Dominator or my Lightning. Cheers

Hi Douglas, glad I came across your excellent video. I purchased that 2017 Cyclone from you in the midst of lockdown 2020; finally got to enjoy it during the autumn/winter months. Thanks again! Love the jacket and my 9 yr old son has already called dibs on it :-)

Hi mate, great to hear from you! Glad you’re enjoying it still and happy to know it went to a good home as I loved that jacket 😂 . That’s the nice thing about leather jackets, that they’ll probably outlive us and can be passed down generations:).

I was insanely lucky and got an abandoned custom order Super Sportsman in my size/spec for £480 when I visited the store. I was originally looking at a horsehide corsair at full price but I still geek out over my Super Sportsman a month later now haha

In case you can’t be bothered sitting through the whole video here are my thoughts overall! Whether Lewis leathers are worth it is up to you. I still love the brand and the jackets after owning many over the years, however for the full price I would like more information on the provenance of the leather. I’d also appreciate more transparency in the production process such as an insight into the factory. I think customers would very much appreciate this information and it would create greater appreciation of the brand’s production like companies such as Aero. Lewis leathers is not particularly expensive compared to many premium jacket manufacturers, however for that price in my opinion heritage and fashion can’t carry it alone, and greater insight into the materials and production would definitely help. My review isn’t a critique of Lewis leathers, just my thoughts on how it could improve into the future. Thanks! As an amendment it’s been brought to my attention that Goldtop jackets aren’t actually produced in the UK anymore. If you’re interested it would still be worth visiting their new show room and seeing them for yourself. Thanks

Nice review and jackets. Regarding the leather, horsehide and sheepskin has become more popular for English style heritage leather jackets in recent years, so there could be a lot less demand for Lewis Leathers cowhide jackets. If there's a lot less demand for cowhide, Lewis will likely buy less of it than they used to, which can result in a higher price due to the reduced quantities purchased. That increased cost may then be reflected in the final garment. On the subject of production, Lewis Leathers do not have their own manufacturing facilities.

I appreciate your earnest review and passion for Lewis Leathers jackets. Leather jackets represent a sort of expression of individuality and unconventionality, especially today in a world which seems to have heavily switched to wearing quilted plastic bag jackets put out by the likes of Pantagonia and whomever else. What I don't understand is why anyone would want to wear a $1000+ jacket which was stamped and branded with a corporate identity. I s it just nostalgia? Leather jackets are an impractical and expensive article of clothing which are limited to a very strict range of temperature and weather situations. Even so, I still love and treasure mine. It takes some time for a jacket to conform and fit both your body shape, range of movement, and even your identity and personality. The last thing I want to do is hand off that effort and credit to a manufacturer that thought I might want to provide them free advertisement via a mini billboard on my chest. That is so… conformist and old-fashioned (but not in a good way). A lot of high quality leather jacket producers in Japan, Scotland, and the US are well aware of their markets and chose to not ask their customers to trot around looking like Pharrell Williams. Sorry that my comments come off as negative, but I have opinions and no one around me cares about leather jackets and so here I am sharing it on youtube. Have a nice day.

If you ask them, they'll make you one without the badge. In the case of Lewis Leathers, I think a lot of people buy them because they are recreating that "authentic" 1960s rocker look, which includes the LL badge. Funny thing is, there are actually very, very few manufacturers making classic cuts & functional styles, out of good quality materials. Most insist on doing something "new" & screwing them up. Or are just cheap, badly fitting Asian produced. LL didn't invest the classic lancer fronted motorcycle jacket but they did refine it into a sort of utilitarian perfect ... for riding motorcycles. Aero, on the other hand, went for an American workwear look (they also did WWII style flying jackets). They were no good on a bike. For riding a bike in the UK, a leather jacket is a 365 day, all weather garment, which the Lewis's will cope with.

Not a bad review though Lewis are now more for posing than riding, hence a lot of TV and Film personalities buy them. I have had a few old Lewis jackets including the Corsair a couple of Bronx's. Derek used to try for 100% retro authenticity to the old ones but the belt fastenings are not like original and on some jackets nor is the Lewis Leathers patch, but he will not make a jacket without it. As for Aero I have been an Aero customer since they had a shop in Battersea selling used jackets or all kinds Aero put Horsehide as their go to leather but they also make good quality bike jackets though they are mainly the American style again made from Front Quarter Horse Hide. They may look old style but I do think they would stand a slide, where as Lewis do not seem to stand up to their original jackets of the 1960-70s. I am not sure but I don't think Lewis used Horse and may have been simply to lure Aero's customers away as it looks so good as it ages. Never buy anything made from Napper Lamb, that is what a lot of the old cheap jackets in the 1960s and 70s were made from, I have an old Kett jacket that is simply falling apart so it hangs on the wall as a badge display. Stick with Aero, even the Highwayman is good for real riding, Lewis were OK back in the 60s but went down hill over the years and despite the power ranger look for sports bikes there is still a market for this type of jacket amongst the retro bike brigade(Enfield-Bonneville etc) What do I ride? A Hayabusa for my Power Ranger kick and a Bonneville at other times and an old black jacket.

Thanks! Yes that’s my general message I’m trying to put across, the difference between the vintage and the new, and how I’d maybe pay £750 for a fashion jacket but upwards of £900 just seems extortion when you can get a hand made jacket from Aero for less with all the choice of leather etc. As I mentioned I think they’ve sold out unfortunately, probably partly because of the interest from the Asian import market. Nice to hear your story and thanks for the insight!

@@dougster701 Except, have you looked at the prices high fashion brands of the same status charge for their practically useless motorcycle style jackets? Stick another zero on it & you wouldn't be far wrong, i.e. £10,000. At one point, Belstaff brand was sold for around £100 million (2011) & I'd say on the basis of their back catalogue & natural celebrity endorsement (i.e. back in the days when they had to buy them themselves) Lewis Leathers were worth more but DIDN'T sell out. It's worth remember when you see all the photos from the 60s & 70s, those now recognised as "stars" were all pretty much unknowns & buying into Lewis Leather's cool, rather than being paid a £1m to lend their cool to crap, like Moss & McGregor did to Belstaff. Different worlds. I alway thought LL were very loyal to their original materials & fittings. Their attention to detail by today's standards is very high.

Thanks. Sounds great, I’m jealous! Lately I‘ve started craving another Corsair as this one is too small. Will be a long time before I can afford one and you don’t see them second hand very often so I don’t think I have much hope. I like the look of both Belstaff and schott. I believe they have premium lines and standard lines in terms of jackets. Some of the Belstaff jackets I’ve seen in shops didn’t wow me, but as I say I don’t think I’ve ever seen their premium jackets in person

Talking about "transparency" etc, Highwayman was original a Lewis Leather brand trademark that Aero leathers stole. The Belstaff brand was sold out to some Italian fashion house then to investor groups for huge sums, stuck on any old crap design, and pumped up ridiculously until it basically went bankrupt. It was losing £48 million to £61.86 million per year at one point. Very different trajectories. Lewis Leathers has instead remained one guy, one shop, & loyal to its original designs, materials etc. FWIW, the original Belstaffs were disgusting things to wear.

@jonahwhale9047 2 года назад
@@dougster701 FWIW, I don't actually own a LL jacket, & have no idea of the economics involved but unlike ex-factory producers, their retail cost would have to include a wholesale margin, as they are selling via 3rd parties, e.g. factory cost + wholesale margin + retail margin. See further comments down below. You'd be amazed at how much money has been poured into Belstaff, it's literally £100s of millions, whereas LL is one guy trying to keep his head afloat above the water, having basically being given the company by the previous owner to carry on, NOT because of the money (the previous owner still not sell out the brand name to be exploited), but because of the current owners dedication to the brand. He has a vast collection of historical information & samples from all decades. As a quick comparison, I checked & found something like an Alexander McQueen biker jacket & it was £3,300 (&, obviously, not safe for riding a motorcycle in). It must take a will of iron not just to sell the brand name out for millions.

Great video Dougie. Your Highwayman is looking great and is a real part of Aero history, the old Connolly ones helped put Aero on the map. @@dennycalder4948 Highwayman's still a rip off of a Lewis Leathers brand name though.
@JimKiralfy
@JimKiralfy 2 года назад
@@jonahwhale9047 I think 'rip off' is a bit strong; there was actually a dispute over the name 'Highwayman' in the early 2000's, and it was settled in Aero's favour. Anyone is entitled to assert ownership of a name, provided it's done in a reasonable timeframe. Lewis Leathers made a jacket called the Highwayman as far back as the 1960's, but never applied for a trademark until 2003; by which point Aero also had a jacket called the Highwayman that they'd been making since the early 1980's, and which they'd already trademarked. The UK's Intellectual Property Office effectively ruled that forty-odd years is not a reasonable timeframe for Lewis Leathers to take to assert naming rights; particularly when another company, Aero Leathers, had been making similarly named jackets under their own trademark for years in the interim. Basically, the IPO said that if you want to trademark something, you can't wait forty-odd years and just hope no-one else trademarks the name in the meantime. Which seems fair enough.
@jonahwhale9047
@jonahwhale9047 2 года назад
@@JimKiralfy From memory, it wasn't a jacket, it was a brand that was part of the Lewis Leather company. All of the Aero stuff was rip offs, that what they did. Reproduction of other people's jackets whether it was the Irwin Flying Jacket, American workwear (e.g. stuff in old Sears catalogues), or the Lewis Leather jacket. Even the 2003 logo/trademark is blatant rip off of the original design. That's just what Aero did. The worst thing about the rip off was that they stuck a British mark on an American style jacket. They started off sell retro, then when they couldn't get so much stock, moved into repro copies. Clearly the original owner (Lewis Leathers) was very poorly legally advised, or perhaps not at all & did it themselves. All they did was put in an application for a mark. You don't need to register a trademark or design to own it. What they should have done is started a passing off case based on prior ownership. I suspect the conclusion is based more on them not having the money to employ lawyers to fight the case, as a passing off case without prior registration is much harder, hence more expensive, to fight. But Aero know damned fine what they did & that what they've published on their website is BS. It's unnecessary bad form. I see they

Speaking to Lewis leathers a few years ago they said they loaned the jacket to Alex for that music video, so that jacket is a vintage Corsair. Apart from that I believe Alex has a few Lewis leathers (or did) but the main Corsair style jacket he wore around that era was an addict clothes dark navy jacket that was possibly horsehide

Nice video. Lewis jackets are a turn-off for me. It is weird for me to see a brand on the left chest. Arrow is overpriced. Personally, I like originals. You can still find excellent deals online. I am in the US. With shipping and import duties, you often pay a premium of 120-180 in an additional fee. I found that some of the celebrities tend to wear the real deal not a reproduction like most companies now make. With exception of some Original makers who are still around like Cal leathers and others.
