I've owned Schott, Aero, and Belstaff. Their qualities are insane! But nowadays I prefer something with impact protection when I'm on bike. I've found that some European racing brands began to release heritage style jackets with high-tech protections. I actually just bought a Rev'it! jacket that looks exactly like Belstaff Outlaws but with armors that you won't even notice. Another recent purchase is a color 8 CXL jacket from Dainese. I mean if logo is removed you won't believe they are from racing gear brands instead of these heritage brands.
That's great! I'm glad you like your Rev'it jacket. Retro is slightly different from Heritage insofar as heritage tends to directly reference vintage whereas Retro can simply be loosely based upon styles of yesteryear. The target clientele can be quite different although there can also be an overlap.
You said cowhide is more chiper. Schott 519 is a Cowhide Jacket, but it one of the most expensive. Cowhide jackets are more refer to comfort and softness. Steerhide is hardet to break in. It is all about the choice. Not the price or quality.
Hi, thanks for your comment. What I said was that cowhide is often used for jackets at the lower end of the price scale. One reason for this is that cowhide leather is produced in high volume and in various qualities and finishes. Being readily available at prices to suit the lower end of the market is the reason why it's often used in comparatively inexpensive jackets. That doesn't mean there's not higher grades of cowhide also being produced.

Great video, I'm looking to pick between Lewis Leather or Aero leather. only concern would be the sizing since I'm not in UK. and from my experience those leather jacket's sleeves are pretty long (for me). I love Real McCoy's but their price is far beyond my budget.
Aero Leathers have a made to order service where they can make a jacket to your measurements. If you contact Lewis Leathers I'm sure they'll be able to give you some advice.

whats the difference between great leather jackets brands like Himel bro, real mccoy and others VS the designer leather jackets like Tom Ford, Yves Saint laurent and the likes? have seen designer brands price ranging from 5k to 12k. is it worth getting 1 piece of Tom ford leather jacket or stay in the Himel / real mccoy category? just wondering.
One difference is that brands like Himel Bros, Real McCoy's etc., are heritage brands that make reproductions of particular types of vintage leather jackets - motorcycle jackets being one of the types. High end designer leather jackets don't necessarily reference vintage and are not usually designed with motorcycle use in mind, hence the leather used may be lightweight and supple rather than thick and tough.
@@ultra-ride2446 thanks for the reply. am torn between YSL lo1 or the real mccoy/freewheelers. YSL for the fact that its supple and light. but am hoping the mccoy/himel/freewheelers will become supple and lightweight in the years of using it. am sooo torn .
Great video. How about doing a budget version. I have a Tuzo Speed 4 jacket which is really good quality. (you can pick them up for less that £100) I did have to drag it around in some dirt and gravel to give it that "worn" look, but apart from that it's awesome. :)
Yes, I'll do a video for jackets at the lower end of the price scale. There's always genuine bargains out there - sometimes we get more than what we paid for. Thanks for the tip on the Tuzo, I'll check it out. I'm also with you on the worn look, I love it.
I have two Aero bike jackets. The materials and craftsmanship are superlative. I also considered Langlitz, but they generally don’t work with horsehide anymore.
Great vid mate. You kinda blew through Schott NYC but aren't they the original creators of the double rider jacket? They claim to be the first to put a zip in a jacket too.
Glad you liked it. What we now call a 'double riders' jacket would have been originally called a lancer front jacket in the early 20th century, and was not motorcycle specific. I believe Schott was the first to use a zip in this style of jacket so can lay claim to creating the first double riders jacket. However, being first doesn't necessarily qualify as most desirable. Buco holds that position for American jackets.
I don't think everyone assigns value to the products they buy in the same way. For example, someone can spend a lot of money on something that has sentimental value to them, but is worthless to someone else. How did you determine that a 20-25% mark up represents 'good value'?

Shangri-La is a small Italian brand making heritage style clothing, including leather jackets. Schott certainly has a bigger line-up to suit a variety of tastes. I don't know how they compare but Shangri-La does have a made to order service, which suggests they're putting some effort into producing quality garments.
I bought an aero leather old fashioned 1940s heaviest weight horsehide bike jacket double breasted with belt. It's stiff and takes some wearing in. I had a Lewis leathers in 1984 that was stolen but it's not as good quality as Aero Leathers. I looked at Simmonds Bilt another Scottish company that were a similar price to Aero leathers but I'm so happy with the quality and fit of the jacket . Aero leathers also do great stitching that is durable and correct special pitch between holes so it won't break from being too close to the next hole. Can't believe how great it really is and is even better than schott and comparable to the classic buco jackets at more than 3 times the price. It's heavy and will outlast me and will last over 100 years. Bloody amazing and bespoke lining and antique brass zips for £750.
Any chance you would do an update video on the jacket you are wearing. I see a number of people asked about it in the comments and you mentioned that it was from of line of jackets you produced a while back. I would love to learn more about it.

The BMW PureBoxer looks like a well made, functional motorcycle jacket. The use of horsehide and Talon zips shows they put some thought into it. However, it could be better. The side panels and rear sleeve panels are both made using two pieces of leather joined rather than one piece. This is a cost cutting measure which I wouldn't expect to see at that price point.
I agree. Pakistan does some great leather jackets. I've got one in cowhide, secondhand 17 years ago. The pockets and lining has worn out long ago but I've worn it on my bike summer winter everyday, come off bike too. The zips are great and I must have worn it 5000 times. I don't know if horsehide bike jackets are made in Pakistan but I've been to Pakistan over 3 months in 1997. Great sandals Baluchi brogue type bespoke with soles made with recycled radial tyres. They never wear out and cost me £2 a pair then. In Peshawar. It was funny seeing the gun shops where replica Asks , lugers, colts and others were made perfectly in workshops like garden sheds. The shopping is a paradise and I bought silver ring with lapis lazuli stone and turquoise and a brown stone with beautiful inlaid stone for £2.50 that I love.

i have a vintage harley davidson motorcycle double rider diagonal zip. i am trying to find out what leather it is made of. it has kind of rolls on the forearm and the grain on the chest is going all different directions.
If you can establish what era your jacket is from it will also likely determine what type of leather it is. The design, hardware, label and lining can determine this. A 1950s black label Harley jacket will typically have a label that states 'Genuine Horsehide' so that one is easy. Horsehide' from the '40s & '50s tends to crease in all directions but so does some 1970s cowhide, so not easy to tell from your description.
@@ultra-ride2446 it only has the label at top saying harley davidson in silver letters. on the lower insides there is a tag about leather care and a tag with numbers i can barely read. i do not see a tag mentioning what type of leather. i have searched, but can't find when harley davidson used this type of black label with silver writing. thanks for the response.
