Is a Bargain Blown-Up Subaru WRX STI Worth the Risk?

The question comes up often, should you buy a blown-up Subaru WRX STI or buy one that at least runs and drives. The price difference between buying a blown-up one and fixing it versus buying one that already runs and drives is prob less than you might think. When buying blown-up ones there will almost always be more underlying problems than you might see and think.

I'd say first and foremost, it depends on your resources. Tools, space, time, all things to be considered.

100% this is under the assumption someone knows they’re going to need to work on it. Weather that’s in their driveway, garage etc 😅

I did something similar last year. Bought a clean sub 100k mile STI hatch for $5500 with rod knock. Went a local stage 1 rebuilt short block, cylinder head gone through, resurfaced (new seals, valve job) resurface flywheel, new OEM clutch, timing, gasket kit, newer used turbo, cleaned acvs, new OCVs, random new suspension. About $6k just in parts plus $6k for the car. Well worth rebuilding if you have the technical ability, time and space. (Your videos helped a lot!)

@@Smeedia I dont know if it got a rebuilt before i bought it. The guy did have records for service and oil changes when i bought it. So i know he took care of it. Ive had do do some work on it since I’ve owned it (non engine work) but it still starts right up even when below 0 or after sitting for months. So im confident the engine is still strong

I have a 2006 Sti with around 160,000 miles…original engine. Believe that if you will. I’ve owned it for some years now and I’ve never had a major issue. I’ve spent a lot of money making it feel/look how it did when it rolled off the dealership in 2006. Best advice I have to anyone shopping for a older gd is to make sure you have a daily and make sure you can turn a wrench. Cause when things broke I saved alot of money doing myself. All worth it tho 👏🏽

Have owned my 06 since 2009, has original suspension and enine 102,000 miles...cobb stage 2 since 2018..runs smooth and plenty of power, no oil consumption. Replaced PCV valve and spark plugs, valve cover gasket, lol. Super reliable, inexpensive engines when maintained properly
@cordelphoenix6770

A lot of the components that you mentioned to replace once oil touches it, I’ve reused on majority of my builds. Cam gears, turbo, oil cooler etc these builds are still running to date without engine related issues. I am from the Caribbean and certain parts aren’t readily available so you must be creative and make sure you spend lots of time decontaminating these parts as much as possible. Loving the content on the build. Keep up the good work 😎
@Smeedia
@Smeedia 6 месяцев назад
Glad to hear that they’re still going strong 💪 up here we just replace everything if it’s had an engine failure. Cam gears can be cleaned but everything else your flirting with danger, those oil coolers are 😩😅
@cordelphoenix6770
@cordelphoenix6770 6 месяцев назад
The trick to the oil coolers are simple Soak for a few hours in degreaser which breaks down the oil then afterwards you just flush and rinse with kerosene or mineral oil. It’s a pain having to order on eBay or Amazon and having to use a freight forwarder to get them to the Caribbean or fedx or dhl But for me if you can do the work yourself it is worth it and the feeling you get at the end is just amazing the first start up and the drive 😅. Also we get only Jdm cars here so we do have it good when it comes to that aspect. 😊😊

Ive got a 2018 STI and i absolutely love your videos! They've actually convinced me to leave the motor alone as counter-productive as that sounds lol The car is already quick enough to get me in trouble if i let it, so i just keep up on maintenance, put on an axle back exhaust, wheels, coilovers and some exterior pieces. had it for roughly a year now and its always a blast to drive!

I bought a used pretty decent shape 2002 bugeye for $4000 and had it for about 20 hrs and the timing belt broke, bent valve stems. So I bought a JDM imported from Japan,used engine, and did the swap. The engine was $1300 from an importer on eBay. I’m glad I did. Runs really good now. So I’d say it’s worth it. Even cheaper to buy a subbie with a blown engine. Long as the previous owner is honest with how everything else on car is. And of course you know how to do all that lol

Another great video Tanner. As always. I have a lot of experience when it come to pulling wrenches but when it came time to replace the engine it was Subaru specific tools that was the problem. Would you or have you made a video on the subject. It added to the cost of my build and I don’t think people consider it when planning a build. The good part is it’s a one time purchase and a person can never have enough tools. IMO anyways. Keep up the good work. Your videos are an asset to the Subaru community and are invaluable. Plus you have a way of making them informative and entertaining.

Yeah I bought one with 70K and it has been a headache I constantly had to pour 1/2 quart every 1200 miles. Basically most sellers are decent or honest when selling it their Subarus at least that’s my experience! Moral of the story Subarus engines aren’t reliable to begin but they are nice hence why I still own mine and hoping to rebuild it once I’m done with nursing school and get a nice salary to help me afford it!

starting from the assumption that you spend more and more money, it depends on what you want to do, on the availability of the model on the market, on the money, on what the law allows you to modify, in the end it certainly costs more to tear it to pieces than to buy it in working order, this is sure but profoundly different on an emotional level 😍😍

I love the car, and to me the build process and satisfaction driving it afterwards would be worth 30k. But as a technician I wonder how much you could sell it for in its finished condition. Like, is there any profit in flipping these cars as oem+? Doing all your own labor. Probably not. End of the day youd be making less than what a shop would pay a technician. Thats why they call it a labor of love. Worth it tho. Cant wait to see it all painted bro! Nice work!

And don’t get greedy trying to make an hp number, just make your motor happy with the parts you have and roll with it. PLEASE HELP ME PLEASE HELP ME! You’re by far the most intelligent person and I’ve been following you for years! You’re the main reason I have an STI! Please help me! I have 2020 STI with tune and some mods. Dealer is trying to say my power steering is messing up because of my tune? Is this possible? Tire was flat a while but I got new rims and tires from tire rack. Balanced all that. Had no issues. Brought into subie and had tire rotated, now it’s shaking, and they are saying the power steering is bad because of the tune. It’s a light tune very conservative, also saying cars to low to do alignment lol when I don’t have anything no coilovers nothing done to suspension. I do have 25 mm spacers on it. Your thoughts as I trust you 💯, please help thank you anyone if u know please comment.
@Smeedia
@Smeedia 6 месяцев назад
Nope, not possible for a tune to cause any type of power steering leaks or issues. The only thing electrically that even tied to the power steering is a pressure switch. Subaru power steering systems are pretty bad already for the fact that they develop leaks and shit the bed early on. Sounds like the dealers just denying to deny imo
