Thanks for the show guys. I started with Olympus film cameras, then Minolta and Nikon and now OM systems OM-1. I now have 2 of these because the auto focus has caught up and noise performance ( especially colour noise) has been greatly improved. If you are back in Melbourne for a couple of weeks I’ll lend you one along with the appropriate lens to do a review on.. You’ll find all the advantages of mobility, stability, reach speed and some pretty cool tricks Olympus/ omsystems users have been enjoying for years.

I would have immediately purchased this camera for the extra reach compared to my R5 if it did not have so many potential issues. I would have been happy to pay more for a higher performing crop sensor camera. I must admit I was expecting a high quality replacement for the 7d mk2 so The juries still out for me. Will be interesting to see what firmware updates change. Keep up the amazing work please. Ps my first “birding” camera was a 1977 Yashica film slr which I thought was amazing compared to my rubbish little ilford before that. I now use the mighty R5. I would not have believed the specifications of that camera if you had told me then, stuff of science fiction as is so much of our modern life.

I think coming from a full frame mirrorless body, the drawbacks of the R7 are just too big. Especially the rolling shutter. 30 frames are nice for fast action, but if wings and lines are distorted, the 30 frames somehow aren't much of help. What do you guys think about the Fujifilm X-H2S and the XF150-600mm F5.6-8? I think this is a very fantastic combo that doesn't have all the drawbacks the R7 has. I'd love to test this combo out. If you get a chance to test this camera, I'd be very interested in your thoughts and a proper review! Thank you for all your videos! I enjoy your episodes so much, especially if you tell us from your field trips and show pictures and videos you took. Your video footage of all these fantastic birds is so great! And congratulations to your hummingbird book Glen! I got it as a birthday present and love it. These birds are real jewels!

I started with a Canon XSI, then T3I, 70D, 6D, 7Dmkii(2),5DSR, 1DX3 and now recently I got an R3. I currently use the R3 for action and wildlife and the 5DSR for landscape etc. It's been about a 10 year journey. Keep up the great video's! My kids have benefitted greatly from my camera body upgrades. Currently using an EF400 -2.8 IS MKI, EF 100-400 MKII, EF 16-35 F4, EF 24-105 F4,SIGMA 14 F1.8 and 1.4 and 2X MKII extenders.

My first bird photography was done at age 15 in 1968 with an Olympus Pen S (half frame 35mm, fixed lens, Kodachrome 64ASA slide film) - on a trip to the Farne Islands, in UK. I won a junior prize with one of those images and that kick started my life long interest. More recently, I've had a series of 5D FF bodies right up to the 5d4 and 100-400Lmk2. Now I'm using an R5 and 100-500 - what an amazing camera - and have been out photographing birds in flight including gannets on the Yorkshire coast, oystercatchers, lapwings, and even golden eagles in the Outer Hebrides. Your videos have really helped me develop my skills.

I started bird photography back in the day forty years ago with the Canon AE-1 Program. I've now been using the R5 for a little over 18 months and am extremely happy with it. I just bought the R7 to use as a backup with a bit more reach but have not been birding with it yet. I did shoot an airshow with it and am quite impressed, so am looking forward to my next trip to Costa Rica.

I started photography as a hobby during the pandemic when we decided to move out to the ranch of my wife's parents. It was there that I started to observe some new species of birds (other than the house sparrow which I was normally aware of) and I decided to grab my wife's Canon R with the EF 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 lens and start shooting. Obviously the results were not something to brag about but for me, at the time, it was a special feeling and I was also enjoying the thrill of trying to identify the new species. Although I've come a long way since then, I would still consider myself pretty much a beginner. My tools have improved a bit as well since then, I now have my own Canon R6 which I use together with a Tamron 150-600mm f/5-6.3 G2 lens. Thank you guys for the wonderful videos, keep up this good work.

My first camera for birds was the Mamiya sekor 1000 DTL with M42 screw mount, and a 300mm Soligor lens, and a handful other prime lenses, bought in 1975. The screw threads made me crazy, and I think it was in 1978 i bought my first Canon, the AE1 and the bayonet mount was a huge releaf. Now I use the R7 and RF100-500, and the EF 500mm f4 IS II USM. What a travel! Thanks for sharing all your knowledge.

I started with a pocket camera as a youngster, no birds in flight etc. hahaha, a little bit more "serious" with a Fuji FinePix and followed by an Olympus E-1 and an E-500. Now I like wildlife photography as my main hobby and stayed with Olympus, Olympus E-M1X and E-M5 Mark III. One of these cameras is my nearly daily buddy at my walks. Yep, I am a "croppy", but lightweight equipment is important for me and its perfect for my needs.

Great concise video as always. My first birding setup was a Canon FTb film camera with a Kiron 24-200(?) zoom. There were no program modes on the camera: manual mode was the only option and autofocus had yet to be invented. A solid camera to learn on but the lens was awful. Now I use an R5 with a 400mm f/4 DO mkii often with a 1.4 tele converter. I thought about getting the R7 as an economical backup body but the different ergonomics, low light performance and buffering make me think it would rarely be out of the bag. Love the show and congrats to Glenn on getting the book published!

Hello Jan and Glenn Thank you for the guide .... I used a lot of the settings you recommended but with a few changes, mostly in the customised buttons ... 1) AF-ON .. set this up for eye detection/AF ... works well 2) Star botton ... set this to Metering and AF Start ...and in the Info Detail set attaching to this option I have all the check boxes unchecked. 3) The AF Points Button is set to Start/stop tracking , and 4) The DOF Preview button has been used as a "Register/recall shooting function" (the icon is a camera with arrows in and out). This is my setting for BIF so in the Info Detail set attached to this icon I choose to Register a shooting function ( I set many items because when i go to this mode I dont want to necessarily carry over the functions I was using just before hitting the DoF button .... so a)Tick shutter speed and set it to a fast shutter (2,500) b) Tick and set ISO to auto c) Tick metering mode and set it to evaluative d) Tick AF are and set to Whole area e) Tick and set Subject tracking to on f)Tick and set subject to detect to animals g) tick and set eye detection on h) tick and set tracking sebsitvuty to -2 I) tick and set Acc/decel tracking to +1 j) Tick and set AF operation to on AND lastly dont forgt to hit Register Current Settings. This then makes the DoF button my preset for BIF and hitting that button gets me most of my settings for that purpose instantly PS in your next edition to the Guide please dont say use default ... say what the default is to make it clearer, and where you recommed a setting and there is an attached sub-menu INFO DETAIL SET please cover that off too. Oh, and where the screen shot says one thing and the text another ... please align.. (ie Touch shutter {camera page 8). Love your shows .. I always learn something useful. The R7 is streeets ahead of the D500 in AF Regards Robbey TC

I started with an Exacta Exa II. My dad surprise me with the Meyer Optic 500 mm f5.6 that had been in on the shelf in Payless Drugs for years (Too expressive to sell in a small town .. $189) The camera wore out in a few years and I found that the 500 mm was good for only 32 lines/mm, but they got me started. I now use an R6 and am playing with an R7. In Yellowstone last month I found the problems ( buffer, mechanical shutter impact, etc.) with the R7 that you described in the video. Thanks for the workarounds.

My first camera [for capturing birds] was the Canon EOS RP. My current camera is the R7. The 100-500mm almost never comes off the R7. In my first hour with the R7 I got the Osprey grabbing fish shot I had been wanting. I have built up a decent collection of RF glass. The R7 feels like doubling the collection. I love the look of the 50mm f/1.8 for portraits. It also makes the 24-240mm that I already love a quite functional 38-380mm if/when I don't want the heft of the 100-500mm. Thanks for the show guys. Cheers from San Diego, CA.

I started taking an interest in bird photography with an OLD Minolta x700 manual film camera, but really became hooked when I bought a Canon Rebel xSi with a 70-300mm lens about 15 years ago. Unfortunately I am giving away my age here, in that I started bird photography with a Canon AE-1 !! I finally added a Sigma 70-200 for that body and thought that was the 'cat's meow'! Now I shoot with the Canon R, bought second hand, and recently dished out the money for the RF100-500 L zoom lens. I have occasionally shot in 1.6 crop mode but the loss of megapixels is sure a limiting issue. I keep watching your videos to learn as much as I can before making the leap to the R7 for bird photography. Thanks so much for the time, effort and opinions on the R7. My first camera I used to take photos of birds was a 35mm film-based Minolta Dynax 700si... but my main focus at the time was Formula One racing cars (once a year)! I currently have a Canon EOS 650D. I utilised Canon UK's 'test drive' program recently with the R5 and R6 and all the hype around the eye tracking and mirrorless functionality is well founded. Saving up for one of the R-series camera's, now that I've tried one. Great videos guys! PS: I looked at Glenn's page on your Hummingbird book and it looks an amazing read. Strangely, I haven't felt any of the focusing issues in low light or compared to my R6. I've been photographing Barn Owls at dawn around sunrise and the biggest issue is the ISO performance compared to the R6. I also feel the focusing is slightly better than that camera but my settings were different from the ones shown in the video. I think what stands out more for me as a negative is the more pronounced rolling shutter, the really loud mechanical shutter sound and no grip available. It's still a great camera and complements my R6 nicely

I got the bug when holidaying in Akaroa NZ and the native bellbirds were literally a couple metres away, it bought back childhood memories of how much I loved the photography in Forest and Birds magazines, and David Attenborough documentaries. I started with a Nikon D40 and the afs 70-200mm , now thanks to your show I jumped to the R5 with the 100-500mm and also use a Olympus E-M1x for extra reach with the canon 400mm 5.6L

The procapture feature and the focus stacking are both incredible features of the R7 and I use them often. I'm getting shots that just the high plus burst would not have gotten for me.

ProCapture is an Olympus feature and has been featured on the new OM-1 and earlier cameras. The R7 has a very crude precapture mode in comparison with the Olympus / OM cameras. It's a great feature and I don't know why it's not been adopted by the other manufacturers although Canon has made a tentative start with the R7.

@@stevemurnan1702 Olympus went bankrupt a short time ago. The private equity company that bought them are asset strippers (just see what they did to Sont Vaio), so good luck with the Olympus/M43 world. They will be selling the ProCapture off as soon as sales start falling. Which is basically now.
@stevemurnan1702
@stevemurnan1702 2 года назад
@@doghouseriley4732 What does that have to do with Canon's poor implementation of ProCapture on the R7? Incidentally, why would an asset stripper put his own money into developing as new camera? That sounds rather odd to me.

@@doghouseriley4732 And one small error in your post. Olympus didn't go bankrupt. They sold their imaging division off.

My first camera was a 40d, now I have the r5. I absolutely love this camera. I would like to have a backup camera, but not ready to shell out for another r5, and concerned about the ergonomic and performance differences of the r7, so I am waiting, too, to see what comes down the pike. Thanks for another great episode!

Oh gosh, now I need to remember something like 35 years ago... Minolta X700 with a 200mm f:4 and a 2x extender. I don't think a single slide from back then would make it through my culling process today but I learnt a lot about patience :-) Next was a Canon Eos 50e with the famous 300mm f:4L IS (first stabilized lens) that turned into a 25 year adventure with Canon (1n, 1v, 1Dmk4, 1Dx, 5Dmk4 etc...), a short swing by Nikon (those PF lenses and the D850 got me hooked up). Now Sony A1 and the amazing 600 f:4 and 200-600.

Hello Gentlemen, thank you for another great & informative video! I have not made the leap from Canon 7D to R camera. Soon, I hope to make a decision. The first camera I shot birds with was a Nikon F3, then made a big switch to auto-focus with a Nikon 8008 to shoot auto focus in Galapagos Islands, was reluctant to make the jump to digital, eventually went digital, now making the switch to mirror-less, R5 or R7.

Boston, Massachusetts here. Love watching you guys and have learned so much even though I'm VERY new to this. I took pictures of your exposure charts from your videos and use them to guide me. I started with a Sony 8mm camcorder about 30 yrs ago filming friends, sports, and birds. Then I started a plumbing business - so goodbye hobby! Recently got my first 'real' camera (was using cellphones), the M6MKii just a few months ago. My R7 just came today!! I have a friend up in Maine that lives on a lake and every summer the hummingbirds come back. I can't wait to get up there as those birds are simply fascinating. I understand what you say about starting with this gear instead of old dslr's, which I've never had, so I guess that is going to make me spoiled. I used to thread steel pipe by hand when I was a younger guy, so, I get the struggle part regarding old gear... Thanks guys! ✌️

Thanks for the in field review Jan and Glenn and the sample files. Looks like the R7 will be a massive upgrade from my current 60D (when funds allow, will be at least 12-18 months of saving for me, limited income). Currently saving for a 500mm F4 IS L (mark 1, can't afford the mark II).

I started my bird photography obsession with the Canon EOS 3 with the eye controlled autofocus. It seems primitive now compared to the R5 that I now use or certainly the R3 with its revived eye control. I hate to think how many cameras I’ve had between those two but I’ve loved them all.

I love your guys videos! Lots to learn and I enjoy seeing the beautiful shots you guys have taken! I picked up my first camera at around the age of seventeen and started taking pictures of nature and wildlife. My first camera was a Canon sx30is point and shoot... it wasn't much, but I still figured out how to get some pretty nice shots of birds with it. I am now twenty-nine and I am shooting with a Nikon D7100 with a SIGMA 100-400mm lens. I actually got my first really nice owl photos and some hummingbird shots with it this month! Its a great all around camera setup that has served me very well in my adventures. :)

I'm relieved that the R7 has a few minor drawbacks having gone from an 80d APS-C to full frame R6. I started bird photography with an EOS700d with a 55-250 lens, then through to an 80d and now an R6 with 100-400 & 800mm lenses, and boy is that autofocus worth it!

Thanks you both for your great review based on massive field experience and real comparison with other cameras. As for my first camera, I jumped into photography when I was 15 in the film days with a Pentax Km offered by my uncle with a 50 1.4. The light meter was broken so he had drawn me a chart where you set the speed equals to the iso and estimate aperture by looking at the sky (f11 if shady sun, f8 for light clouds etc). Good training that helps me now when I shift to manual! My second lens was a 200 f4 and I took my first bird photos with it: some beeeaters on the wires and barn owls in my village with an old Metz 45 torch. I got more serious into bird photography and bought a Pentax Mzm, still no AF with a sigma 400mm. Not a tack sharp lens but very light combo that did marvels in Lapland in 2000. Well 22 years after, we are in digital ages with such amazing cameras around. I have the Canon 5div, great camera but I miss the reach of my old 7d (but it’s files are too bad). My second hand 1div takes dust even if it is probably the camera I love most (16 Mpix is not much indeed). Waiting for my r7 to put on my 500mm f4ii or 100-400 v2. I would have preferred only 28mpix, one stop more better iso, gps and the ergonomics of the r3 but it would not cost 1500€. So all in all it will be amazing for the price point and 5div will become a perfect travel backup! Thanks again guys and good shooting to you all. Thomas P (from France)

My first camera for birds was the Canon 70D with the 300mm F/4 lens purchased June 2014. This was an amazing combination. I had no photographic background and received the camera gear 2 days before I flew out to Cairns and then a road trip to Iron Range. I am an Engineer so fortunately all the RU-vid photography videos that I had watched before leaving, although full of theoretical and practical technical speak, spoke a language that fitted how my brain works. I came home with 5000 photos and was blown away that many of the photos were far better than I had ever hoped given that I had zip photographic knowledge and skills. Of course when I now look back at the photos from that trip very few, if any, would now be keepers but I was hooked and morphed into a photographic twitcher. I now have an R6 with 100-500mm and 800mm F/11 lenses. I have a few questions for you guys about the R7 being a backup for the R6. The area of interest is the R6 20mp sensor compared to the crop factor R7 32.5mp sensor. I too love photographing birds in rainforests and I find the R6 and 100-500mm to be brilliant. Most of the time birds are close enough to fill a good portion of the frame. As discussed the R7 struggles and I'm not sure the crop factor and higher MP give any real advantage over the R6 in low light. However in good light the crop factor may be very helpful because of the much smaller 20MP sensor of the R6. I was wondering how the 800mm F/11 would work with the R7 in good light. You mentioned the poorer IS of the R7 on longer lenses. Also how does the shutter shake in the R7 for mechanical operation compare to the R7 rolling shutter in electronic mode 30 fps. I'm not sure if rolling shutter impacts birds in flight. If so does it mean that the R7 Electronic Shutter is best used at 15fps. In summary I was thinking of using the R6 with 100-500m and R7 with 800mm. That is how they would sit in my bag. Being older at 68 I'm a bit lazier and not so fast at quick lens changes etc. Thanks for your inspiring and challenging videos.
