It's funny, people always talk about how cheap Gibsons and Fenders were in the 60s etc. But if you do the math on money conversion they were actually the same or more back then.
@honkytonkinson9787

And there weren’t really any cheap options back then that were playable. Even the student instruments that came along were pretty expensive!

Our perception of money probably has a bit to do with it. No matter how you account for inflation, $250 will always sound like a heck of a lot less than $2500, even if it’s actual valuation was more.
@JamesPetroff

Both the Gibson Les Paul and Fender Stratocaster were around $350 in 1959. The Strat got cheaper over time
@blib3786
@blib3786 Год назад
The difference is that wages haven’t kept up with inflation for the past 40-50 years, so while the prices have stayed more or less the same, most ordinary working people don’t have the same kind of disposable income to spend on these expensive guitars anymore.

I'm 66 and just purchased my first "real" LP. It's a 1960 reissue AAA Standard - I freakin' love it. It sits right next to my chair in the living room, and I can't stop looking at it or playing it. So when you say "does it inspire you to play?", absolutely - my fingers can attest to that!! Nice video!!

I'm always amazed when I read comments from people crying about Gibson pricing. Are these people making $5 an hour? I live in Central Europe in a country where we get paid 35% of what Germans get paid and even I could save up and buy one. With the money I've spent on summer holidays I could have had one years ago. Instead I play an Epiphone Les Paul. It's all about priorities. Quit spending your extra money on holidays, booze, drugs, etc. and you can have a Les Paul too. It's that simple. So this year, fuck Spain, I'm buying an SG. 😂😂😂

"If this thing is gonna make me smile a bunch, it's worth what I paid for it." I love that statement. I got a Gibson LP 60’s standard recently. It’s the guitar I’ve wanted since I started playing 20 years ago. I was actually looking at a Tele 50’s original. It was $2k and I was almost sold, but then I said to myself if I’m going to spend all this money, why not just go for the one at the top of my bucket list. If not I’d still be chasing that, and wondering if I’d ever get one. Is it worth $2799? Probably not…But it’s so good it made me consider selling all my other guitars. Don’t believe what the haters say about Gibson. They’re just regurgitating 15 year old opinions and projecting their sadness onto the world lol.

Hell yeah Dylan! if you like it, and you can afford it... just get it! Waiting for a rainy day is a bad idea. One day you get the news your time is close to over, and you have things you wanted to do, or own one day. So at that point maybe you can you go buy the "thing(s)" you wanted, or do what you planned to do, but you can't enjoy it knowing your time is so limited. Live in the moment! Who gives a shit what ANYONE says!! It's absolutely worth every penny to you, and that's all that matters! For me I can't justify the expense, but some people must be buying them, however I do spend my money on vintage Australian made Matons, mainly because for that money you can buy pretty much top of the line locally made guitars, and the quality is second to none.

I bought my first LP standard in 2021 and the guitar tone is amazing. I think the signature guitars have a subtle edge but I wouldn’t say a $2500-$2700 guitar is average. I’d highly recommend getting a LP standard. Truth is, it really comes down to how you play the instrument and the guitar inspires you to play. Don’t get stuck on the price. Always try out the guitar first and you may be surprised how good cheaper guitars may be.

I totally agree. My band is preparing for a gig so I did a head to head with several LPs (not only Gibsons). I played through at least 15 guitars...the Gibson LP Standard 50s came out on top by a good margin. The feel and tone were second to none. It's heavy but there is NO DOUBT in my mind that wood density and the single cut shoulder (compared to double cut guitars) does something significant for tone, resonance, and feel.

I believe Epiphone hasn't dressed the fret ends of any Les Paul in fretboard binding in 40 years. And they all have regular allen trussbord nuts, not the Gibson bolt that's so much easier to adjust. Not to mention the import 3-screw trussrod covers that butt up to the nut, as opposed to the more elegant 2-screw cover of Gibsons.

It's not a Gibson thing or issue; that's how the world works. Still... is it "worth it"? To date, there's no true equivalent. Really. There is nothing 100% the same. I bought a Classic and a Studio last year, and they're fine, but I did NOT see or feel or hear any reason why I should continue to pay 2, 3, or 4 times the price just to have a different inlay on the headstock. Maybe someday I'll grab a Standard just to kind of round out a small model collection, but I'm not chomping at the bit at all. They're just okay. Congrats on the Slash LP, I have just got one in appetite burst. It's also my first Gibson LP. Love the AAA tops! I was lucky to find mine in my local store, hanging on the wall. It was set up and intonated perfectly, I tried playing several 50s and 60s standards and none of them spoke to me like the one I found. I guess it's true that with LPs, you have to play them to find the one you like.

@casual35if you’ve not owned a Gibson you can’t say they are overpriced, I don’t currently own one but I’m saving up for the afd burst, if people want too judge me when I buy that guitar they can, but I want a premium guitar that I love the look of and look forward too playing and at the end of the day if someone can afford the guitar fair play too them, don’t be salty or try and say what someone did is stupid just because you can’t afford it

"Slash Signature"... I have to laugh... A Les Paul is already a signature guitar - actually designed by Les Paul himself and why it carry his signature... How can that become another signature guitar? That's marketing nonsens!

I know that it sounds funny, but the ONLY time that I have literally "dreamed" of a guitar, I was playing a "Gold Top" Gibson Les Paul. So, if I ever decided to break the bank and buy a Gibson, it would HAVE to be a "Gold Top!" 😊

Great video Dylan, and a sweet looking November Rain burst Gibson Les Paul, I have gotten 2 new Gibsons in the last 2 years a Toni Iommi Monkey sg and I pre ordered the Dave Mustaine rust in peace limited edition Flying V guitar, I was worried about the V because of all the bad reviews on RU-vid, but I’m here to tell you When I got the V from Sweetwater it was flawless, and so is the SG to me Gibson has stepped there game up.

I think it basically comes down to what you said last. I love my Les Paul; every time I look at it and hold it, it brings me joy. And it’s the same with other things, like clothes. If you still get immense joy from them even after years, then the extra cost is worth it.

This guitar sounds exceptional. Great tone. In terms of is it worth it... well, that's a simple answer: unless there's another (cheaper) guitar exactly like it, it is. But there isn't. Even if somebody over a RU-vid video says X guitar "sounds basically the same". No1. No. It doesn't sound the same. 2. It doesn't feel the same. 3. It doesn't look the same. 4. It doesn't feel the same, again. Because this is huge. I have a Epiphone LP and a Gibson LP. The Epi is great. But it's not the same. Nowhere near; but it's a phenomenal value. The Gibson is not about value, it's about the 100%. Which the Gibson is. Nothing else is 100%, period. I wouldn't say it's the "actual thing". I would refer it to the 100%. It leaves NOTHING on the table.

I want to say no, but I want to say yes. There are many types of guitars - I don't mean electric vs acoustic vs etc. - You have "practice" guitars, "recording" guitars, and "gig" guitars for instance. Then there's that special other type - the type you can't help but love. You have an irrational connection to your instrument, partly because it's yours, partly because you're a filthy fanboy... and that's fine. It means it will take a lot for another guitar to take its place. Truly, cheaply made guitars have a lot to live up to vs a real, vintage 60's US made Gibson. It's a pipe dream to imagine your Chinese-made $4,500 guitar is any objectively better than a $450 copy under a different brand from the same factory. We have to be real about these things to not go bankrupt.

Great Video, I've got the Slash appetite burst - also don't buy because of a name, but common - it's Slash and my GOD the thing looks and plays amazing.. . worth it 100% !!!!!!! i do also have the EP version...... and it is lighter, sounds very good also but to your comparison. a 911 drives like a 911 , something else very good drives close to that but with issues.... Both good depending on your budget.

No. The simple answer is no. It is not worth it. There is so much other stuff available, that serves the same purpose. And those options don't have problems with the G string constantly going out of tune, and an ultra thin neck joint at the headstock, and an outrageous price tag.

Is amazing the sharp HD ability of cameras. Saying that, and looking at this Les Paul Reading the top cap grain. I wonder why the wood looks like 3 unmatched pieces of Filipino Mahogany. I've now been playing over 53 years. To date I've only played a few late 1950s and early 70's LPs. I still play my 63 Strat and a new ( 2018) PRS. I find the PRS a very fast guitar. But, it has no soul. Zero. I think Les Paul's are over sold. They seem to end up with marginal players who always crank the overdrive green peddles. A good sounding modern LP is seldom heard to my ear. My guess most of the modern LP are just bought for wall decoration. If I had a new one. I'd remove all that clear coat.

I dunno Dude I had an Austin Telecaster and aspired me to be Muddy Waters. I had an Epiphone SG Junior that aspired me to be Carlos at Woodstock. Yeah yeah, I know he had a Special. As far as I'm concerned, having owned MANY Guitars of many brands for me it begs the question: what's in a name? The price? If you got it, flaunt it, but otherwise you get what "speaks" to you...and usually that boils down to affordability. I mean, don't get me wrong, a lot of Slash's stuff is great, I just ain't willin' to throw down for one, even if I HAD the money. Only Sig Guitar that ever appealed to me was Jeff Beck's "Oxblood" Les Paul under either brand because they both were awesome guitars. I liked it so much I did what I could afford, and built my own...

I can’t afford a $2000-/-$3500 guitar! I’ve always wanted a Gibson LP! So I happened to luck out and found a really especially sweet Gibson Les Paul Studio tobacco burst made In Montana in 2000 for $450.00 with case. At a pawn shop. I talked them down as they were asking $550.00! I waved all the cash I had in my pocket at the time and they decided to take it! So I walked out with my 1st real Gibson Les Paul! I love it and play it everyday!😊

Like you I like the tone of AlNiCo II magnet PUPs. I have a P90 and set of stratcaster PUPs made with that magnet. ( Darn! I got them before I found your channel, but my next set comes from your hands...) As to the LP you got...BRAVO !!!! If you have the ability to fulfill such a dream and you can do so without starving your dog, then go for it. I never had the lust for an LP but DID get the Gretsch Jet I had wanted for years. Very different sound though with DynaSonics. Unique to that PUP. Then found a used ES335 for a price far below market value. I can't think of any other guitars I want at this point. As to the price, it will always increase in value over time for instruments in the professional class or collector levels. Quality guitar values are increasing a lot more than my 401k (yours too I bet). Who wouldn't wish they had bought an original Flying V had they the chance then and knew their later value.

That is a slick looking guitar. I think that the regular models are absolutely worth the money. Get into the Murphy Labs and some of the other premium stuff and I think they're really marketing to collectors at that point, rather than players. I just got my first genuine LP in the last year, too. I'm super happy with my purchase. I went for the r6 p90 version because I like big necks and so that I can have the option of minibuckers later if I want. The burst version of the p90 guitar comes with a plain grain top so I went with the gold top. My S and T type guitars have boat necks which I thought were chunky, but the r6 is a true baseball bat; which I love. Had there been a flamed dirty lemon burst option with the same specs I totally would have gone for that even for a few hundred dollars more.

I don’t think they are when plenty of high end Epiphones, especially Inspired by Gibson’s models are competing for half the Gibson price. However, if I could find a deal on a used Gibson, I would be all in, because Gibson’s are handmade pieces of art though. Luckily bought mine when prices weren’t astronomical!

Don't get me wrong if you have the money, get a Gibson. For the rest of us, there is no need to spend that kind of cash to get a quality Les Paul. I got a mint condition Epiphone Les Paul Custom Pro for $500 and it is an amazing guitar. Even if you argue that the Epiphone pickups are not as good as the real thing. I saved about $3,000 and could easily upgrade the pickups for much less than that. For me, the Les Paul shape isn't my favorite to begin with, so it wouldn't be the guitar that I would spend top dollar on. For me it would be an ESP, Jackson or PRS. They are all around better guitars at virtually every price point anyway.

Setting aside the usual arguments about how they are similar prices to what they cost decades ago, if you take into account inflation, the main thing I always noticed and judged, was that the price of mid range to high range Gibsons had always been significantly more than Fenders of comparable range. Now you can make arguments about higher construction costs for carved top guitars etc., but I always found quality and sound consistency of Fenders to be superior. I would walk through my local stores in the 90s and try Fender after Fender off the shelf, and they all sounded good. With Gibsons you HAD TO try a dozen of them to make sure you were getting one of the “good” ones”.

Epiphone makes a good guitar (after you replace the pickups) but they will never be Gibson. It’s a feel thing, especially in the neck. A Camry will never be a Cadillac although it gets you from place to place just as well. Doesn’t feel the same.

Change the headstock angle, fix the string pull angles and for God's sake put 24 frets on it with a smooth neck joint... otherwise Im not even interested. As far as I'm concerned anything without a full 2 octave neck is not a guitar. Do you make a full size piano but take off the last two keys? Nope. Always has been an epic fail and thevonly reason it ever was successful was because it was one of the few things available at the time. If it entered the market today...as it is it would be rated no higher than a Glarry. Any PRS, even the cheapest ones, are lightyears better than a Gibson

Was a -Gibson- Les Paul ever worth the money? They have issues staying in tune, use an angled headstock without a scarf joint or volute which makes the neck very fragile, nitrocellulose isn't a durable finish, etc. It is perfectly valid to throw money at things that will make you happy regardless of them being actually worth the money, like a Gibson guitar.

I think if you are looking for a tool for the job there are plenty of options that make a great sound for less money than a Gibson guitar. A Gibson is for someone who wants a nice thing, a luxury item, to enjoy for a long time. Not saying it can’t also be that tool for that sound but it is expensive because of the brand. I haven’t played a lot of Gibsons but I bought mine new almost 20 years ago and it’s always been a guitar that I love to play and love to look at. I’ll never sell it and it’ll be something to keep until I’m gone. It was $1000; a Les Paul studio vintage mahogany. I think it was worth it! Something will need to change financially before I’ll ever buy another Gibson though, not that I need any more guitars anyway.
