Are you trying to decide on what budget overland vehicle to buy? I think the Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo WJ might be one to consider if cash is tight. In this video I walk you around the 1999 WJ my son recently purchased and share with you what our plan going forward with this Jeep is.

Happy to see the WJ finally gets some love. They are so often overlooked and severely underrated. Inline 6, solid axles, what's not to love? They are extremely capable, very comfortable, and liveable as a daily driver. I am on my third WJ. It's getting harder to find clean ones. Enjoy your video and channel. Keep up the great work. Thanks.

Even tougher to find decent ones in 2021, and the prices have more than doubled. Still the same relative to Au and Ag, but the US$ is getting pretty worthless relative to working vehicles.

My friends dad has one of these that was previously owned by a NFL player. It had a fully built V8 and a huge supercharger. It made upwards of 600hp. I never got to drive it but it was pretty impressive.

Hey Brad, a build series on this would in my opinion would be great for your channel or a mini series. There are a lot of Cherokee fanatics out there. (There you go Cherokee fans, support from a Wrangler guy.) The Wrangler tends to get all the love because of what it is and all the products out there. Cherokees are great "cheap" 4x4s for the budget minded for those who aren't Wrangler obsessed or don't have the budget. Cherokees need love too!

I believe it was the First Gen ZJ, not the Second Gen WJ, although the differences in 4X4 performance is nil. Both had solid axles ( perhaps a bit on the skinny side ), standard open difs, moderate duty transmissions and transfer cases. As long as you didn't have the habit of doing stupid car tricks, they would last pretty much forever. The earlier ZJ was easier to fit larger tires onto because of the bigger wheel wells, but not by much. Problems arise from putting tires on that are too heavy and too tall for the gearing. Go one size over max stock and you'll never have an issue. Keeping mine street sweet and overland worthy - not over rocks and stumps.

Bought it stock but it now has an ARB bull bar on the front, protofab rear bumper with spare tire carrier on one side and a Jerry can carrier on the other, and a Clayton 6in long arm lift kit. I also have a dog guard cage between the very back of the back seat in the back of the vehicle which I use to mount stuff on. Absolutely love this rig! Have a lot more to do to it. Plan on doing some serious off-roading and overlanding with it.

Great choice. My 03 Overland runs/looks new with 150k on the odo. The 4.7 ho brings a stronger tranny and dana 44a with limited slip to the mix but does require religious maintenance to ensure reliability. That inline 6 can run on bacon grease changed every100k. Best Jeep motor ever built.

The WJ is prewired for almost every option. The connectors are there, you just need to know where to look. Auto dimming mirror, auto headlights, fog lights, Vanity mirrors, heated mirrors,Radio steering wheel controls, factory trailer hitch harness, rear power point outlet. Change the overhead center with a homelink center. As far as the electrical gremlins. Check the wiring harness it crosses over the very last head bolt near the firewall. It feeds all the sensors on top of the motor including Injectors and the crank sensor. It rubs the head bolt and throws a bunch of codes depending on how many wires it shorted out in the harness. I love these wj's And you can do it all for pennies on the dollar to load up your jeep!

Just scored an 02' WJ Laredo for my mom about a week ago after she was involved in an incident with her other vehicle. She looked at Laredos, Limiteds and Overlands, she said she did like the creature comforts of the limited and overland but after I explained the goods and bads of each model, she went with the Laredo for reliability. After being a technician for years and working at a local Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep dealer for a while, you get familar with the pros and cons of each model. As mentioned in this video the original AMC Straight-6 on which this 4.0L is built after is virtually bulletproof with routine maintenance. The only main issue on these is some of 0331 casting cylinder heads were known for cracking but not all had the issue. The 4.7/4.7HO's were no where close as reliable as the 4.0L. They were known for cracking pistons in the years, cam failures in multiple years, head gasket failures, etc. As far as the 4WD is concerned, there were 3 options available. The Selec-Trac, the Quadra-Trac II and the Quadra-Drive. In my opinion, the Selec-Trac with the NV 242 T-Case is the most reliable one of the bunch. The Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive with the NV 247 T-Caseworked great.... Until they broke...And virtually all of them did. They suffered from limited-slip Vari-Lok diff failure, gerotor pump failure, clutch pack failure etc. Her 02' WJ Laredo with the 4.0L and Selec-Trac has only 150K on it. All services were up to date and I know this Jeep will last her many years to come, and since I know when she has an issue with it I'm the one fixing it, I shouldn't have to be fixing too much due to the engine and 4WD combo package it has underneath it. The biggest issue with these were window regulators. Keep it shiny side up ya'll and great find for $2K. 👍

My dad used to have a 2002 Grand Cherokee Limited V8 when I was 10 years old, and it was a brilliant car. Yes, the V8 meant it was a TREMENDOUS gas hog, but it had some of the most comfortable seats of ANY car I had ever sat in... 😍👌 The Americans really know how to make proper car seats! @@ubermac85 Recently inherited a 98 XJ from family. A good amount of Cherokees have the 8.25 Chrysler rear end with a limited slip (which I found out the hard way when I found the clutch washers in pieces on the bottom of my differential!) I've heard that the 29 spline lsd diffs are very strong, so that could be a big advantage for the budget minded off roader when considering the WJ or XJ. As for ride, i actually prefer my XJ. I like the stiff ride and the smaller dimensions make it more fun to drive, and the lighter weight allows the 4.0 to feel much more spirited than the 4.0 WJ.

When I finished working in Tonga I shipped it home to Australia and am still driving it today. It might be small, but it is big inside. I can fit an electric guitar case between the wheel arches in the back. Can’t do that with a Pajero and many others. The V8 will run forever.

Firstst thing to check, the cooling fan relay on these goes bad often. It's located under the passenger headlight bucket, and most people cut a hole to access it. If you do need to replace it, or perhaps even as preventative maintenance, make sure you clean the mating surface for the heat sink and apply some thermal paste. When they go bad, people often simply swap them, only to have the new relay burn up the same way. This is the key to keeping the 4.0 going for the long haul as heat is the enemy. If you plan to overland her, it's crucially important to check it.

I've got a 03 WJ with the 4.0L. I use it for the same thing your son's planning to do. I'd suggest a 3" lift from IRO. At 3" you can fit 31" 265/75 or 265/70 tires with no trimming and only very mild rubbing under max flex. You can get new coils, new shocks, a new steering stabilizer, an adjustable track bar, and new coil isolators for about 700-800$. You don't need to do anything to the control arms or driveshafts. With the extra clearance and larger A/T tires, (I recommend the BFG K02, they are well worth the price) this thing kicks ass. I took mine which has the aforementioned set up to Moab last year and tore it up. Tackled Hell's Revenge solo and did some other trails too. A locker or two would really take this to the next level but they are a little spendy. With the 3" lift and 31" tires, this thing still drives and rides great as a DD. The BFGs aren't any louder than the highway all season's mine had before. If you want to maintain the ride and comfort don't do coil spacers or a shock lift. It's really not worth the money, with what you could get with proper larger coils. I also had electrical issues. I had an injector shorting open on the engine block causing a misfire. I definitely recommend going around and replacing the plastic that covers all the wire harnesses and checking all the grounds for good contact.

Best way to go about it with a budget is find a set of newer jk rubicon takeoff wheels/tires. Commonly found for $500 a set , and you can get a 4”ish budget lift to fit them for a few hundred bucks. I have a wj with that setup and a front locker and it’s very capable for any normal over landing.

I have an 02 Laredo WJ. It is awesome. It’s so capable off road on dry ground that I don’t need to use 4x4. Stumps, logs, short ledges, rocks- no problem. I think it’s due to the even ground pressure that 2 solid axels provides. Also surprising was how capable the full time 4x4 is on the road in snow/slush. I didn’t expect it to be that great since it has 3 open diffs in full time, but it hooks up great and you just scoot up hills and pull away effortlessly from a full stop.

Absolutely! I ran into the exact same scenario last fall after my heart surgery as I was home on temporary disability. Looking for Jeeps and of course the Wranglers are the go to models but up here in the northeast they’re rusted, rotted overpriced and anything in between. I came across an 04 WJ locally and I went to look at it. Family owned like yours. Mom and dad had it and dealer serviced it. Gage it to their son and he did the same through college. All records and everything Mopar down to the hoses and fasteners. 138k on the odometer. Took it for a ride and with a little loose end feel in the rear swaying, I fell in love. The thing was in pristine condition. 4.0 and nothing done to its original OEM appearance or anything. $5500 sold. Since I’ve had to do some things like alternator, water pump, thermostat, coolant flush but quite honestly it’s welcomed as its bonding time getting to know the engine and the vehicle. Put on a roof rack, big LEDs fog lights and wired them into the stock dash spot. Next week the seat bars, 2.5 lift, and 32” Duelers are going on. I take it to work once in a while as that is a 130 mile round trip daily and I just love driving that thing. Simple, fun and other than a few minor rotted areas underneath that can be repaired, I get compliments all of the time on how good this looks for a 20 year old Jeep. I love this thing!

This is definitely a great overland vehicle. My mother used to have one that was simply a grocery-getter, but it really was a tough son of a gun. I'm a college student on a budget too so I've been putting a lot of thought in to finding something that is the right combination of affordable, reliable, decent mpg, able to carry some people/stuff, and worthy enough for mild offroad and overlanding adventures. It's funny that you've chosen the WJ because after my research I agree it's between the WJ with the 6 cylinder or a Subaru Outback (I am a Jeep guy, but I've been leaning toward to subie since it seems to lean a tad more to the economical side even with a bit of offroad draw back missing the solid axles). It's interesting to think about this and I'm excited to see how this turns out because I may soon be doing one just like this! I want nothing but success for you, but I'm hoping too many people don't jump on this and end up raising the price for these old things lol

I have a 2004 wj. Definitely 2" lift and you shouldn't have to mess with the drive shafts. Look into a rear bumper with rear tire swing mount, and gas tank protection look it up on internet it is the only negative of the wj. Good luck and I can't wait for the videos.

Good to see the Grand's getting some love! Before I bought my first Jeep, I did a lot of research on the XJ, ZJ and WJ, trying to decide which I wanted for my mild offroad build. Ultimately, I went with the ZJ, as it seemed to be a nice compromise between the XJ/WJ, with solid aftermarket support and the relative simplicity of the XJ; plus, you could get the 5.2L V8, which is just as solid a motor as the 4.0. Mine has 241k miles on it, still running strong! I just need to finish rebuilding my transfer case, so I can actually have 4x4 again! Can't wait to see how your sons project shapes up!

Thanks for posting this Brad! I have an '04 that looks nearly identical with the 4.0L. I put a 2" budget lift on it and replaced the stock tires with stock Wrangler rims and tires. Trimmed 1.25" from the front of the wheel well (all plastic). The 31's look fantastic but the full size spare has to go on the roof rack. I bought a $100 roof rack from Amazon along with some cheap Chinese lights that work great. I've replaced the starter twice, water pump, and learned how to solder door wires....I love my Grand Cherokee!

We had a 2002 WJ Limited with the 4.7v8. There are a few weak points with this vehicle. First the Rear Upper "wishbone" link. It WILL wear out and you get left/right yaw as you accelerate/decelerate. The lower link bushings will wear as well. Changed the ball joint in the wishbone 3 times, wishbone 2 times (easier just to change the whole thing rather than replace the bushings), and lower links 2 times in the hundred thousand miles we put on it. (bought with 72k sold with 170+k). Also brakes are too small and tend to warp, I'm sure it will be worse with larger tires. Do your self a favor and never use discount auto stores rotors. Summit has some options for cross drilled and slotted that will be better up to the task and are pretty reasonable. The 4.7 are pretty good motors too. Only large issue we had was a need for a new harmonic balancer as the rubber was starting to separate. BUT while this was a pretty good vehicle, both my wife and I agree our previous 1997 Grand Cherokee Limited with the 5.2v8 was the BOMB! No link problems, I felt like the viscous coupling in the transfer case was superior to the later generation's design. That model when you backed out of the garage in to 20 degrees and 6" of fresh snow was on it NOW, all four tires gripping. The WJ needed about 10 minutes of drive time to get the fluids warm enough to bite the snow well. Not what you want when its cold and its the side roads that are the worst when you first begin to drive. Of course both of those were Quadradrive II, not the system in the vehicle presented. Hope that helps someone!

I purchased a 2002 WG Jeep GC Lmt in 2014 for $1500 but had to replace the 4.7L motor. Previous owner used inferior fuel and very lax on servicing, result spun big end bearing. Reco engine, power steering box overhaul, dash our to repair broken airbox flaps and a couple of other minor repairs. The car now stands proud, other people who have seen it say the same. Paintwork and leather interior are perfect All up it cost me $5500 on the road, This car also has the quad track 2 (245) transfer case so is an extremely capable 4x4. It was going to be a pure junk tow car for my boat but its so much more.

These are solid SUV's. I had a 99 limited with a 2" bds suspension last year. It kept up with my friends lifted wranglers and ive plowed through snow up to the mirrors with it. If i was to buy another i would go with bilstein 5100's. Couple things to watch out for: the BCM is prone to shorting out for no reason (i went through two and the third time i pulled the first two apart and reassembled one that worked). Second, the wires going to the door are tight so the negative wire is prone to breaking. I would also recommend, if you have a clutch fan, swap it out for an electric fan. You'll notice the power increase and more efficient cooling especially if you're doing lots of crawling.

I own that exact model, but a 2000 with the 4.7. It’s mostly stock and I have to say, it’s performance is amazing as stock. I took it trailing in the mountains in Colorado and it at them up without problems. Even steeper grades can’t stop its low gear mode. It can also take a lot of payload. I had 1000 pounds of boxes in the car no problems.

Managed to pick up a 00 WJ with a shot suspension (was going to lift it anyway) for $900... new tires (which i sold for 300 and got JK take off wheels) and front half shafts. $2000 into it with replacing all of the suspension (minus control arms) and getting OME lift, track bar, addco sway(highly suggest this one) , extended rear links for the sway bar, all the steering components minus pump ( really look into this since the stock system is terribad), tune up ( all fluids replaced), rear locker, JK moab wheels with new tires. Body was 95% rust free (rust under the plastic rockers (replaced with 2x6 steel tube and made sliders and steps for)... then the rest has been some sheet to make a fuel tank tuck to get that tank from hanging out the back and to make a fuel tank skid since the stock one is prone to rusting out, and mine sure did. Parts are super cheap on the WJ and the scrap yards have dozens in them. Can't wait to see what you do with yours!

Great Overland project planned for the WJ! Ordered one new in '94 with Select-trac, trac-lok, skid plates and luckily chose the 7/70,000 warranty. It died miserably twice: first the ignition module suddenly failed on the road then the trans was shiftless both requiring tows to the dealer. Hoping your 200k WJ has grown passed these issues.
