Is a LARGE pen tablet right for you? (Wacom Intuos Pro Large PTH-860) 

I’m scared of larger tablets, makes me feel not so confident with my strokes. And the small one is plain uncomfortable. The medium is just the perfect spot for me for everything. Haha

Thanks to you I realize I need to get a larger monitor 32"+ for my Large Wacom Intuos which I have loved using for about a decade - I recently tried a Wacom Cintiq 22 and could NOT get on with the drawing experience at all so I have sold it and gone back to my trusty Intuos boy - now I will reuse that money to buy the monitor. 👍I also have the Razer Tartarus Keypad to solve the problem with a keyboard and Large Tablet fitting ergonomically on the desk - I absolutely love it. It's a joy to map.

Been torn about upgrading my aging Wacom Cintiq 13HD or switching back to a standard drawing tablet to help with ergonomics; your review has done a great job of breaking down some of the pros and cons. Still not sure what I'll pick, but it's incredibly helpful to see the other options out there, particularly as someone who's rarely considered large tablets. Great video Thanks for showing this. My first Intuos was the 12x 18 Intuos 2 I used for years. It first version the was USB powered. Then later I retired it and let a friend use it. I moved to the Extra large Intuos 4. I use on a tilt and on a drafting table. When not in use its store in an art portfolio case. This last weekend I won a eBay offer on an Intuos 5 Large PTH 860. The reason is I got my extra large for studio work and going to coffee shop to draw and show off as people see the table and love to watch me draw with. Sadly with shop I like to go closed and now after pandemic lock down many gone good. I tend not to pull the extra large out as often as my work area is smaller right now and my draft table stored So I got Intuos 5 Large PTH-860 for a good deal and can us it in the small area. I am trained in drawing art more in Pen and ink and traditional arts studies but saw early on late 70s computers were the next tool for art work. I took to them fast and used most digital drawing programs with mouse or trackball and one off name tablet for a short time. I like to draw large. In the studio I didn't use small 8x11 paper or canvas I did big long strokes and large sheet and canvases. I use Paint long before Corel bought it up when it was fractal paint. I draw the same as do on paper, but I don't watch my hand I watch the screen. I did this without thinking of it. And many who watch me ask how do I disconnect that need to watch your hand I said I follow the brush. Oh, I do details in my work. I will work large, but I like to zoom in and work at the pixel level. It great when doing layer works. I like to be portable. I worked from a high-end graphic gaming laptop til it died a few years back. It fixable but till then I am on a desk top but need to get back to being able to get places to draw out in public. I love to show off my drawing while also inspiring young people and showing them the Wacom tablets. It's fun to show young people there is no limitation to their imagination. I do still say for to learn traditional arts studies as well. Computer art is cool but knowing traditional arts help and give better perspectives to doing work. Wacom had made great tablets and I love mine. Hoping to get the new one soon and get back to drawing more. Looking to get a laptop going as well to get back out in public as well.

Something not mentioned on the video (or totally missed it sorry if this is the case) is that you can resize the active area to accomodate your needs, granted I'm a linux user so I have global shortcuts to reseize the active area dont know if this is possible on windows and mac. With this possibility I don't see a point for S or M other than real estate on your desktop. Amazing videos they are really helpful.

The first Intuos I ever used was the 9x12 one and I felt like I was swimming with all the arm movement I had to do. So I got me the 6x8 one and I happily used it for fifteen years. Now, since the Intuos 3 is becoming obsolete, I chose the PTH 660 to replace it, seeing that the active size is similar, but nope. I don’t know if it’s the design or that I am doing more arm movement when I draw now, but it’s not a fit for me. Now I am getting the PTH 860 and I really appreciate your review about what to expect. my solution for the keyboard problem was the T9 delux ambidexterous keyboard. is one handed and as the name implies, you can use it as a left handed too, since the space bar happens to be twice on each corner of the device. Is a sturdy membrane keyboard with a ton of keys, you either setup shortcuts the old way (on clip studio), or rearrange them using a macro software like autohotkey (it has volume/mute, and esc scrollbar, print screen keys on both sides, so more keys to use!) because is just like a old keyboard -no software- just plug and play. i wouldnt change it for a tartarus or any of the fancy expensive keyboards for right handed ppl. This guys has so much more available keys 45 in total + space bar, and is just 20-30 bucks.

I come from the XP-Pen Innovator 16 which has 15.6inch screen size, lately I've been looking for to replace this tablet and decided to give it another try to pen tablets due to the low cost and being able to use a super good monitor without having to spend thousands. Majority do recommend the medium sized tablets and so I took my Samsung Tab (12.4inch), dimmed the screen and turn it into a pen tablet thanks to SuperDisplay by connecting it to the 24inch monitor I have. The experience? I feel the working area so crammed, only workaround I was able to solve this was by optimizing the UI the best I could and thus giving a little more of gestural space. That being said, its important to consider how much space does your UI use as it'll reduce even more the active area. I fondly remember my XP-Pen Artist 12, the already small active area I was left with was just as tiny as an iPad mini maybe even worse than that!

Using Precision Mode a lot more (set to about 1/4 the screen size) helped me use the full active area more often. It also helped me keep a better view on my work as I rarely had to zoom in visually.

if i have the budget, is it better to get the intuous pro L rather than the G930L ? i cant find any head to head reviews online of the two models... any help would be appreciated. thanks

Im thnking of selling my cintiq pro 24 and switiching to either intuos pro or large for a healthier posture. Im a storyboard artist so do more sketches then painting. Also my monitor is an ultrawide 32inch monitor. U think that will affect the size of tablet needed?

Hello there, I see through the comments that you also bought a Huion Giano. What I'd like to know is what is the drawing experience compared to a display tablet and traditional? I have a Huion 16 inch display tablet (2021 version) and I just can't seem to draw on the thing because it feels like pure glass. Is the Huion Giano much better and comparable to pen and paper? Would you say a Wacom Intuos Medium would be perfect for a 27" screen and a Wacom Intuos Pro Large would be just right for a 31" screen?

I was looking at new Huion Inspiroy Giano and it is 429 × 260.9 × 9mm vs L wacom's 430 x 287 x 8mm. So in terms of size to reach a keyboard it's the same as my current intuous 3. What do you think of Huions?

This is an excellent video! To be honest, I was a bit disappointed that Intuos is such an old model by now. I own Huion Giano and it's very good, seems like a no brainer compared to Wacom. I know Wacom has more pen options and I was interested in that, but I will wait until they release a refreshed model to consider it.

A lower pullout for the keyboard and the tablet on the upper section of the desk seems ergonomically correct, but I'm no author nor an artist.

I love my 860. Bigger is always better in regards to a workable area.

my cintiq 16 hdmi cable broke but i am now using it as intuos haha i think it's the same as large size and i am loving it

I've seen that there is an PTH-860-S and an PTH-860-N, Wacom says its south vs north and location depended (one has a booklet with more languages), reddit says the same. however I found some shops say one is wireless (bluetooth) and the other is wired, afaik they're both wired and wireless. also, Amazon says one has an older ram in it, the price difference is 70 bucks for a "new" second hand one... however I'm still scared to make the purchase as 240 bucks is still quite a price for a possible mistake. Does anyone else have more info on the -S/-N differences?

I bought wh1409v2 around 2 years ago and to this day I am still forcing myself to be using it, I do mainly 3d sculpting and sometimes digital painting, but after all of this time it is still uncomfortable, it'just constantly way too much hand movement to get where I want to, I actually regret buying it, idk if I should sell it and buy something like h1060p or just reduce the active area, smaller tablet could let me place my keyboard closer but its not that bad at the moment, not the main issue atleast

Is it useful to get a large pen tablet when the active area is bigger than the display of the computer or in this case it is better to get a medium size tablet ? ( Also , awesome video thank you ! )

Drop the music or turn down the volume... I can barely hear you over the loud music. Very distracting.
