Honestly, I agree with you on avoiding diff locks for an off-road basher. I tried one in my 2WD Rustler and in less than one battery pack, I took it out and put my stock diff back in. Even with dedicated off-road basher tires, the truck would immediately start to spin out with even the slightest steering input and it got really annoying really fast. At least with the stock diff, the truck was more predictable and drifts were more controlable.
Look up the washer mod for the stock diff, best of both worlds and its free! I did it to my 2wd Rustler Brushless and it finally is controllable without either spinning out too easily or loosing traction on one wheel and having that wheel spin up and balloon and cause handling isssues, etc.. Ideally would be a Oil Filled Diff so you can tune it with the Diff Oil WT. One day i will try out the HobbyRC aluminum Oil Rear Diff for the 2WD rustler, slash, & bandit/etc..
You can use a really thick grease in the stock diff or add some silicon ear plugs inside and get a more resistance to replicate an lsd. Could have a balance of both
Just wanna correct you on 1 thing locked diff doesn’t destroy bearings if your racing on a track. It destroys bearings when you sit there and do doughnuts for a period of time.
chris metal Wilson Ummmmmm clearly you didn’t see that I have metal hubs and ball bearings. I’ve always had ball bearings as I bought it new as a VXL and I got metal hubs about a month after I got the truck.
That’s what happens when you play with an RC car. The wheels sometimes have to spin in air to correct a nose dive. It’s either a nose dive and a broken chassis or a little bit more stress on the gearbox.
i got locked the center drif of my kraton exb 8s and not issues at all and is a beast on and off road! i got proline street belted tire and proline off road belted tires
Right on cool, I was just telling you about the metal bearings because they're supposed to keep the dirt out longer so in turn would keep your bearings in better shape so try a set of those out they're actually a dollar cheaper than the OEM bearings next time you need a set of them. I just threw one in my slipper clutch spur ⚙️I would like to try a set in my wheels but mine are still fresh so no reason to waste/change them yet
If you're running 4WD I always prefer locking the front diff or packing it with very thick grease but leave the rear diff open. It makes the car much less twitchy and pulls harder and straighter out of corners. You can compensate (if possible) by dialing in a bit more steering angle if you need it. Also helps with offroad just as much if not more than locking the rear diff. Locking rear diffs make cars twitchy under power and traction loss, front diff makes it more stable. Only lock both if you're into hardcore rock crawling and preferably have front and rear steer. Ofcoarse some cars might be fun with a locked rear diff, I have some cheap WLToys that spins the inners rear tire on hard cornering, packed the rear diff with thick grease on that one, now corners much nicer, more fun to drive.
Great comment man. I agree. I’ve been putting thicker fluid in my front diffs for awhile now I notice a good improvement in handling. Thanks for watching! SUBSCRIBE!!!
Nice moccasins lol👍👍 cool 📸 I have the hot racing sealed diff for my 2 wheel drive rustler & I'm using 100K silicone diff fluid so it's not 100% locked but maybe 90% locked or something runs good tho
My opinion was that locked Diffs are bad in bashers and you may have a different opinion on that and I don’t care. The locked diff destroyed my rustler and I’ll never go back to it again. SUBSCRIBE!!!
@@joshsrcs honestly i think im going to lock the rear diff on my typhon... I use it mainly for drifting so.... on asphalt/carpet I use hoons tires (low grip, hard compound, perfect for drifting), lowered suspension and heavy diff oil on anything offroad it's usually the stock tires, higher suspension (for ground clearance, nothing more) and heavy diff oil both work fine but I want to get more out of it, so now I think I am going to lock the rear diff. good or bad idea? we'll see
That’s fine by me because I think 1 of the things I said they are good for is drifting. It should be fine overall with just a little more maintenance over time. Good Luck 👍
@@joshsrcs Thanks! but I'm not sure about 1 more thing... since this car is all wheel drive, should I am wondering if I should lock both the rear and the front diffs, or just the rear?
If you lock the rear you will get understeer and when you give it throttle you will get oversteer. With the rear Diff locked understeer and oversteer will be more extreme than with an unlocked diff. With a front locked diff I think you will just have some understeer. And with all locked your steering will be crap and you’ll have to give it throttle to drift to make it turn.
Your wheels don't have bearings in the rim, it just came loose, you have to check all the time unless you won't to blow out hex of the rim. Locked diff are heaps better but just be more careful when shutting of throttle or going into reverse in air. You can snap drive rods on diff easier.
For high speed off road (this is called an RC Basher) like this car here it is not good I think. For crawlers it is essential because an unlocked/open Diff will allow the wheel with less grip to spin and the crawler will lose grip and not send power to the wheels with grip. In a basher I think it is bad and in a low speed crawler I think it is very good 👍
You NEVER want unlocked/limited slip diffs in a crawler. Any steering benifit open Diffs offer crawling is negated 10 fold by the lack of grippy-ness lol. Locked everything for a crawler and proper Akerman front is key. Bashing/general speed running is personal preference/setup dependant 🤷♂️
Dad: "soooooo let me get this straight. You want my earplugs because... You want to rip apart the very expensive and perfectly functional toy i bought you... replace the grease in the differential with said earplugs with a near certainty of breaking multiple parts repeatedly so you can what again.....? CHILD: spin in circles way more better! DAD: ........ your Flipping grounded for even thinking that.... and i dont want you hanging out with that Kevin guy anymore!!
Lol love the commentary, diff lock deff only good for Drag setup imo. Works well if you use REALLY thick Diff oil. Think I have 100k oil in my 2wd slash instead of locker. it was virtually undrivable with a locker on 3s on the road around corners so I took it back out
I was looking for a comparison video and this is exactly what I needed. You should try is pro-line wheels with the aluminum hubs btw. It’s a game changer
Can I get in on this.🤓. I have a 1/8 losi xxl converted to electric.. on 6s rn. X01 motor & pinion. MM2 esc.. THING RIPPS!! When I upgrade the esc I'll try a 8s run.. but I can't because I KEEP blowing the rear diff.. tranny holds up nice for my style of driving.. I don't track race or jump often or any other acrobatics..lol If only I can lock that rear end!!I I attempted to lock one with epoxy but I'm not sure I used the right epoxy or let it sit long enough cause it didn't hold.. any ideas. I know there's going to be a weak points on the truck, I'll change axles.. I just want to lock the rear end.. is there a spool or something for that or a technique to lock it it's kind of a heavy truck and it puts down a lot of power...
I have a Xmaxx 8S. Front diff is stock, center diff is stock too, rear diff is totally locked lol. I removed the rear diff, and I installed the Hot Racing spool. Rear locked axle on a Xmaxx is a must! It helps off reading so much too! Your always three wheel drive minimum. It makes crawling over terrain much easier. And it puts down full and evenly distributed power to both rear tires at the same time. I love it!! I have seen no side effects to a locked rear end on an 8S X-Maxx. It works and i’ll never go back to an open diff!
Yeah I’ve never even thought of a locked XMaxx Diff. I’m Glad that you like it, but locked Diffs aren’t for me. What I’d do if it were me is just add some thicker diff fluid because I always want something to give. I do a lot of jumping and racing around so I just want it to give and have some good turning without drifting. Also I don’t want to tear up my yard too much. I might need to update this video and explain it again in better detail and depth. SUBSCRIBE 👍
He's also 4WD in the X-Maxx. Totally different setups to run vs a 2WD Offroad or even on road car. Plus the Xmaxx comes with 3 real oil Diffs like a 1/8 scale 4wd racing buggy...
If you get a lot of snow where you live and have one of these 2wd trucks, 100% get a spool. You will rarely get stuck and will actually be able to enjoy the truck on a slippery surface. Also just want to say that I have had a spool on my rustler for a while and haven't had any of these issues. This video really makes it seem terrible, however with a proper suspension setup and tires it absolutely rips offroad.
Not sure about this difflocking business has always seemed a little silly to me to be honest... but will drop a sub because either your a genious content creator or the gods of hilarious timing love you. Either way thaks for sharing.
Ok sounds like diff lock at least for the rear is bad idea. It won't steer properly and destroy your wheels! Maybe good with crawler or really loose ground like sand, snow?
In this video the rustler was on Traxxas anaconda tires. Which are a grippy on/off-road tire. I’ve had the exact same thing happen on Traxxas talon tires which come stock on the stampede. They are off-road tires with an aggressive tread and they spun out very easily. Doesn’t matter what tire ya got because with a locked diff you will break traction easily. Some people like it, some people don’t. This is my opinion so take it lightly. 👍
@@joshsrcs I have the same exact tires on my rustler and they are not at all for off road buddy. No traction what so ever. But I did hit 71mph on those tires if you wanna check out my video. Thanks for responding🏁
@@joshsrcs 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 What you got the "look at me ya'll" syndrome? RU-vid fame is hilarious. I'm already legendary and yt had nothing to with that. Didn't mean to upset you champ. Just know what you're talking about before dropping the vid
RU-vid fame? I’ve got 500 subs. This video was just me voicing my opinions as I thought them up. I’ll redo this video with a proper script and careful planning in the near future. How’s about you subscribe so you don’t miss it.
In one of my bashers I’m gonna lock both diffs for longer battery life on it, and way smaller pinion, I don’t mind having to spend a lot on bearings I’ll just bulk buy wheel hub bearings
Locked Diffs will most likely not give more battery life, they will most likely take more battery power because there is more stress on the motor and you will have to pull the trigger more to overcome grip on wheels with traction. A smaller pinion will also decrease run time because the motor has to spin faster to get to the same speeds as you had on your last pinion.
