So we’ve been testing our rally e36 pretty hard in the desert and recently it took a bit of an L. The cooling system seems to not be too happy being slinged around in the heat and the dirt. However, e36’s are notorious for having cooling system issues so we consider ourselves lucky to have gotten this far. But it’s finally time to revamp the ‘ol cooling bits and see exactly how cheap the factory plastic parts really are!
We have a new channel!

Don't forget to mention that when you swap a clutch fan for a Electric fan you get more horsepower! Also if you redo an entire cooling system on a vehicle that you are going to be pushing hard, swap the ethylene glycol based coolant for a propylene glycol based coolant after a very thorough flush. It cools better and is easier to clean up in case of leaks.
@thunderjeep08

Converting the fan to electric makes a big difference in throttle response and parasitic loss. Especially when you are beating on it and the fan clutch is engaged.
@rostifardian
@rostifardian 3 года назад
Those E36 i6's have a "fan delete mod" where you put in a cooler thermostat, and WaterWetter for more efficient cooling. If you don't live in an area where you have bumper to bumper traffic, and can always have decent airflow through the radiator, you can lose the fan entirely. Pretty common in E36 forums
@PhantomPhaze
@PhantomPhaze 3 года назад
Nah, unless you're making pisspoor hp the loss is negligible and you get way more airflow from a single clutch fan with a shroud than even a dual efan setup. Also a clutch fan is way less likely to fail and cause overheating. the only real advantage of going to electric fans is space

There’s still a few plastic flanges and joiners to go before it’s all metal. Some you can bypass others you have to live with. I just finished a full overhaul of my e36’s cooling system. Every hose every joiner, I ended up bypassing my cars heater core as the 3 joiners that vent thru to the cabin are plastic joiners and become brittle over time. Wonder if you guys will come across this seeing the state of some of your other plastics. Also I’ve heard mixed things about the mishimoto radiators, some people love them some people say the quality just isn’t there. The stock radiator would probably have been okay with a bigger fan, they have a bleed screw too so all you need is a flat head and a few hours of free time to properly bleed your system. You just need to screw 2 bolts directly to the block evenly and the water pump will come off. 10:26 The two dots that you see on either side are the hardened dedicated spots for this job. Watching him take off the clutch fan made me jealous, I did my 99 dodge ram 1500 Laramie with the 5.9 magunm and it was so rusted onto the water pump that I had issues hammering it off with a air chisel and the snap on tool. Took me I think 4 hours to do it when it shoulda been a 1.5-2 job to do a water pump

Craig davis for a super easy to adjust digital fan temp controller, pair that with a lincoln mark viii fan and you’ll never ever have cooling issues again. less than 1/4 the price and about 2 times the cooling performance.

My mom had the same car. The plastic on the radiator gave out while on the Ambassador bridge going from Canada to Detroit. It was a mess of a situation.

7:50 put a piece of hose on a funnel so you can catch the fluid at the source or as close as you can get and have it drain to a bucket. tight spaces usually allow you to wedge the funnel in and walk away while it drains without it spraying all over

While im sure a lot of us miss the front yard garage aspect of Money Pit, it really is cool to see Zach working on the car with a shop and the right tools (besides a real lift) I think you can tell he is slightly less frustrated with long jobs and he is more willing to do the harder jobs that suck up more time cause hes not working in his driveway all the time.

The trick to using a vacuum bleeder to fill the system is to pour all the coolant and then some into a clean bucket and pull from there. Transferring from coolant jug to coolant jug is when air gets introduced.

If the E36 is anything like the E46 you should see if the windshield washer fluid sensor is the same part as the coolant level sensor try to swap it in.

PSA for anybody doing the waterpump on their m52 engine, loosen pulley bolts before removing the belt, and more importantly, waterpump has two threaded holes that arent used when the pump is installed, so you remove all the bolts and use two of them inside those unused threaded holes and when you start tightening them they push against the engine and force the waterpump out, so that you dont have to do what he did and hit everything around with a hammer

Metal is a great replacement for durability for most parts. I still prefer plastic, especially the waterpump and replace them every x amount of miles to keep the system fresh. The downside with metal waterpump is, is that in case the bearing fails, it begins to shave against the walls because of the play that came by the wear. This can create metal shavings since it can hit the wall. That can get into your cooling system and potentially clog up the system. If the plastic pump fails, it cannot shave against the wall since plastic is softer than the metal. There’s a reason we use oil as lubricant in engines, but there’s no real lubricant in the cooling system ;)

I just started watching the video but I gotta say if you want to tune an engine and make more power then that means more heat so an improved cooling system is a must

By far the most common failure point on those cars are the plastic coolant pipes that run under the intake manifold. Why did you not replace them? Modern serpentine belts do not crack. They wear down. That is why they sell wear gauges for them.
