When I started my Master's degree, my siblings urged me to quit and not do my PhD! I was a stubborn, and did what I always dreamed of doing! Now, I'm a one year away from getting promoted to Associate Professor!
a PhD is good for getting Visa's easily and for immigration. As someone from Africa who loves to learn new things. a PhD can allow me to learn new stuff while getting paid for 3~4 years, while also being able to move to europe and have access to better opportunities. Many answers to the "Is a PhD worth it" question don't take background and situation into account.
I did my masters in Environmental Engg. My proff. Asked me for PhD. I was not ready. I wanted to find work. I found work. Meanwhile got married. Have 2 kids. Back to Square 1 after 9 years. Mustering up courage and getting ready for PhD.
Thanks for your video! I just finished my PhD and had been wondering the same question. I would agree with you that the greatest benefits from those 5 years were not my research, but the freedom to learn what you like. I learned I love managing people and making APIs for other coworkers, although nobody every taught me those. I got a job this year that will leverage those two and looking forward to what comes next!
Thanks for sharing. I think I will also go into the workforce immediately after finishing my Masters. I'm glad you were able to decide to go back for your PhD. It's a concern for myself as well, and I'm glad that I can see others get their degrees in non-traditional ways.

I just want a PhD as a life accomplishment. I don't really about job prospects. I am a graduate student rn doing a masters and I couldn't be any happier.

@@acscp125 to eat you need to buy. To buy you need money. Even farmer need money to grow crops and rear pigs. So you can't say that the farmer rear pig not for money but pig. People pursuing phd need to be paid decent amount of money. They invest their youth to do research which is must for human evolution/development. And hence they should be rewarded not punished. We need to understand that the candidate has sacrificed his job etc to pursue the research and hence funding should take all these into consideration.

did you study electrical engineering and go into the software area? why did it ? everyone wants software nowadays... there were so many others like power, telecommunications, automation or electronics. I'm in the first year of college and I feel obliged to follow the software area because it seems that everyone does well in this field.
I went into Software for Embedded Systems. You should have hardware know-how for that and many have an electrical engineering background in this field. You will learn on the job anyway.

Your job opportunities are defined by your capabilities. A PhD does not narrow them down. It might increase them. Your salary is also defined by your capabilities and luck. A PhD might give you a bit more at the beginning, but that does absolutely not matter in the long run. Usually people who do a PhD are at the top 10-20% of their class, are frustration tolerant and hard working. This is what leads to a better salary, not the PhD.
I highly dislike some of the comments here. „Worth it“ = money and being rich? I’d rather look after wealth and not money. Money might be the outcome but not the pursuit. Skills and purpose in life means wealth. And who knows how much money somebody has! It does not matter. You can be rich and not wealthy, e.g. you win the lottery. And still you can be lost having no happiness, meaning and purpose in life.. If you look into research jobs, stats show they are very badly paid. Imho money should not be the pursuit of a job. Look into recent achievements in particle physics. I am very excited about it. Hence, I have high respect for your achievements and probably very few people might grasp what you went through to accomplish it. Thanks for the feedback. I guess, what you are talking about is fulfillment, which you can find in your family, friends, job, sports... Having a lot of money does not provide that. However, what definitely works against fulfillment is being poor and in debt. My education enables me to do, what I like and not to worry about money while doing that.
Thank you for this video about PhD. It was insightful and I just suscribed. I always had this idea that Germany is good with engineering because of Audi, Mercedes Benz ect. So I was wondering about PhD in Engineering in other parts of Europe such as Hungary? Is it as difficult as Germany too?
Maybe I should make a video about, why the looks of an office, car or house does not tell anything about financial wealth. What tells is equities, bank accounts and debt levels and all of that is not transparent to the outside world. As a rule of thumb: Buy what you really need and save/invest everything else. This will increase your fulfillment/happiness levels over time.
Thanks for sharing. Ph.D. journey is never a straight path. It is quite demanding, but it is worth the sweat because of the rigor and challenge that make you prepared for many many more things in life.
I watched the whole thing. I just got my bachelors degree and I'm thinking about going all the way. To Masters and to PHD. So I'm just looking up videos about people talking about therir PhD. I Find it odd that in the beginning you were saying that the PhD was just a piece of paper but then after that you explained your incredibly great career and said YES the PhD did help. I'm gonna get a PhD. I['m in the industry already.So I 'll have to do it while working as well. But it's all good I'll just work really really hard and get some benefits from it.
@@ur3947 sorry for the late reply. I would get my PhD in computer science. It would help me because I want to be at the edge of knowledge and study particular computer science topics like computer vision and AI to it’s absolute end. Plus I’m not going to do a 6 year PhD. I’ve already been accepted to schools for. My masters degree that only takes one year instead of 2. After I get done with my masters fast I will find a college with a program that allows me to get a PhD as soon as possible. So that within the next three years I have my masters and my PhD. Not only would I have researched a topic and created some sort of new discovery, but I would use that discovery for my master plan!

I think that this is the right thing to do in the current situation. Engineers, who finish their degree in these days and want to join the workforce will face severe difficulties during the next few months and maybe even longer.

I m confused at lot. I am studying msc biochemistry . But I don't know what should I do should I go for phd or join any industrial job. The good thing about the future is that it is unknown to us. If you really want to boost your income, start your own business and be successful at it. In general, people worry too much, when they are young and find out about it once they get old. Doing a PhD will not hurt your career, but has the chance to boost it.
A comfortable upbringing helps you to get started in life. It does not help you afterwards, once you are on your own. I was lucky that I got paid during my PhD. Honestly, I would not have been able to afford it otherwise. Luck and hard work really helps you in life.
You got it right. System is so designed that a poor ought to be an Einstein to gain a seat on the contrary rich get it easily and also don't care much abt the stipend if any. And the poor has to manage it all even if he is Einstein like brainy.

I did my masters in computers from Asia 15 years back and then got industrial experience and started family and now still have an IT job in Germany. Think very careful about, why you want do a PhD and what field you would enjoy. Look for open positions, write an application explaining your motive, send it and wait for the response. So, very easy. The first step is the hardest and many people come up with reasons why things will not work before they even try. In your case, you cannot lose, but only win. If you are rejected often, you do not lose anything and if you are hired, you win.

PhD is a very rewarding experience and improves a lot your analitycal thinking. However it is sadly seen as a minus point on your CV (should be a plus).
If you are still young, I would say it is worth pursuing. If you are in your late 50's/early 60's. No. It will put you in enormous debt along with interest rates. I have my Master's degree, and make just as much as someone with a PhD. I knew a guy who did earn his PhD and said he had to LIE in his application because it can become politics. HR calls it "being overqualified" (i.e., they don't want to pay someone more money when they can hire someone with a lesser degree for less money and can equally do the job).
I studied tuition free and got paid like a school teacher while I did my PhD. On my first job after the PhD my salary increased by 30%. From that point it tripled within 10 years. I do not think that a PhD guarantees that, but it definitely does not prevent it.
@@parttimepart It seems like work has become very practical nowadays. Your PHD will pay off if it is in a hot field that someone needs right then. End of story. Like if space x has problems with their aircraft control systems and you did. a phd in control systems and know how to fix that BOOM your rich. If your phd is not in a hot field your no better than any other candidate. Noone rewards you in todays market just for having a phd. Go look at the job postings for companies in the US like SpaceX , boeing, GM -- they are all looking for extremely specific skills unless you go in at the intern level.

Pay is not everything in life. I do not spend remotely as much as I make. However, my pay is great and holds up well even in an international comparison. In Germany healthcare is cheap, my children can study tuition free and I have 35 days of vacation and sick-days do not count. My overall standard of living is probably higher than it would be in the US or Australia.
Sir, you also said, "the PhD certificate does not entitle you to anything ". Sir, would you please elaborate on this? I feel ,that after PhD , lots of good things will happen to me. Could you please elaborate on few mis- conception or presumption that a student carries in relation to this?
You should remain humble and respectful. How many good things will happen to you in your professional life will always be determined by your own behavior and performance. A PhD does not change that.

I am unsure about basically everything new and possibly life changing that I try. Everything is so unpredictable and it can always go wrong. Up to now, it worked out just fine and it does for most people, if they do not take insane risks. There are of course bumps and challenges in the way. For me life would be very boring, if I could be sure about my choices beforehand. From my point of view, trying a PhD and taking a chance to fail at it is much better than not trying it at all. You will always ask yourself, how your life would have been, if you tried.

Leave school early. Get a job/Trade, do well at your job, be ambitious, learn your job well, work your way up, find what you're good at within what you've learned on the job and get into business. You don't need this rubbish. You've wasted so many years of your life studying to work for "The man". Because that's all you've done, and will take you so many years to earn the $$$ after your study anyway. Go your own way to create wealth. That's why you studied wasn't it? BE THE MAN.
Maybe he enjoys learning and the challenge of learning and pushing boundaries. If we all just got a trade job who would develop new technologies and new thinking?
Not everybody has the same pashion. Nor does everybody wanna rule the world. But if you do wanna rule the world then Computer science is a great degree as it's one of the degrees who produced the most millionares.
@Alan Crane , I do my master's from fach- school Germany and want to do PhD after words . But I joined industry then realized that application of known how is important and u need decades of experience to master perticular field in industry / u can Google out academic s right know but not experience / so now I work as Boiler design consultant and earn decent money and even today I study and apply knowledge in my career. So value of just theory in school not that important in industry.
@Alan Crane The question is, do you really want to pursue an academic career? A career like that with no projection differrnt to be a teacher and staying giving the same classes? For my that's boring and mediocre. Teachers that I actually know they are really non qualified people and always they're trying to find the most easy and mediocre way to do their own classes.. For my they're searching only a salary with a mask of fake scientists.

The online classes will become into better revenues for tradional institutes because thoses "online" classes will be manage for the same institutions, saving costs in infrastructure, electricity, salaries with reductions in staff, and becoming in more time for preparing a Powerpoint file for presentation in a class. This because the method will the same although they use internet.
In engineering this is very unlikely. However, an undergraduate dropout can also become an intelligent and hard working entrepreneur. I would have no issue working for someone like that
