V6 motors are underrated IMHO. I used to have a gen 3 Camaro v6 and it really took some abuse. My brother now owns it, it has 220k miles on it and still runs great.
@@sxggaming8518 Nothing. The only thing that has failed on mine was the ignition control module. Very easy fix but I wouldn't recommend it as preventative maintenance. If nothings wrong with it, leave it alone.
In Australia we had a 3.8l Supercharged V6 called the L67 Ecotec put in RWD Commodores, so this is probably the closest thing you will get to L67 RWD in America
The best thing about this is HE did most if not all R&D work, 300wheel is definitely a fun car to daily but when you build your vision with your tools & your hands that "fun" comes along with Pride & there's not much better. Cool build. Respect✌🏽
This brings back memories! I had a 97 Firebird with the 3.8 that I struggled to pay for coming out of high school with an entry level job. Eventually I bought a powerdyne supercharger kit for it and installed it in my father in laws garage. It made decent power but these were back in the days before tuning was at a level that it is today, so at WOT the car was having a hard time shifting (4 spd auto). I sold the kit and threw on an 85 shot of nitrous which had me hanging right with the Trans Ams of the day. I loved that car! Great job doing that custom fab work to make the grand prix supercharger fit! Very cool build!
@@6ON6Firebird to be honest I don’t think it would be too hard to adapt a pro charger universal kit to a 3.8 fbody. The worst part would be making a mounting bracket but even that wouldnt be too bad.
Stuff like this is great! Gotta keep pushing and keep encouraging folks who are interested in swaps or adding power to what they already have. I'm one of those guys that takes a swap head on when everyone is saying 'just buy the vehicle with the bigger engine.' I've added 4 wheel drive to a Trailblazer, swapped the 4.2 for a 5.3 while keeping all the electronics working properly. Swapped a V6 in the lady's car when the 2.4 Ecotec took a crap, etc.
I've always done things to factory controls. Taking them apart and changing control knobs, backlighting. I really like how you did those. Simple details make driving the car feel so much better
Maybe a little. He said It's a low end torque car. Might help how it does cruising in the top gear, and how it moves out in 3rd but if this car shines in the lower to mid rpms more and not so much up top, it may just feel faster but not actually be faster in 1st and 2nd. Must remember when it comes to boost, the less shifting and longer gearing, usually the better for boost, especially as low to mid rpm kind of car. That's my take on it
@@hatedonalot9080 well that maybe true but I think the comparison was just the major difference in cost in terms of the two types of cars and everything from the ground up in costs.
@@MrDerekRobinson he mentioned the power band “tapering off” at the top too though. If he’s feeling that he still has pull left until he gets up in the rev range a higher ratio could help with that. Depends on where it falls off. If it’s pulling well and tapers considerably before he has to shift that’s one thing, but if it pulls well and falls on its face at like 6200 that’s another though… hard to tell from the video. For the most part, I would agree with what you said though, if you and I were there to drive the car I think we could probably colab to decide better… I think we should hit the guy up for a test drive 😂
I have an L67 Buick Regal. Intercooled, Comp Cams complete set up (thank you Chris Ryan), counter-rotating shaft removed for the double-roller timing change (oiling holes plugged, very precise dynamic balance), M90 ported & polished, modular pulley set up, poly ""Doughnut," minor head work, JPL fuel rails w/ rising rate fuel pressure regulator, Triple Edge transaxle build w/LSD (did not put the lower gearing from an NA transaxle in mine), headers w/Magnaflow exhaust. Brakes are big Caddy, suspension is half 9c1, KYB, Voegtlin progressive rate springs, and Pontiac GTP LCA. Rims are 18" running Yokohama tires. Is it "Stupid fast?" No. Is it the "Ultimate handling machine?" No. But it is a lot quicker than you'd think. Handles really well, ride is still good. Durable? It's been together over 7 years in this configuration, no issues. Will cruise all-day at high speed very comfortably. Added bonus? Mileage didn't suffer. Cruise at a constant 75mph and it'll pull 25+ mpg. These Buick 3.8L are great. I made mine to be a durable, all-around driver. It does that well. For more performance we have a GT350
He wanted stylish and sporty..He definitley got it with the 6 gen FireBird...That's why buy I bought one 2 years ago....LOVE just looking at Her!!!...And She drives GREAT!!!
He is so right about the plugged injector comment lol. Had that happen on a real cold dry day in my GTP and it took an ice cream scoop out of my #1 piston
Nice work man. One big advantage the 3.8 had was how quick revved. The blower should compliment well on the fbody platform… looks like it def does. I’d go 3.42s. Would be a noticeable “seat of your pants” change and when you drive normal you probably will see little if any gas mileage drop. 👍
No secret here. V6 muscles will always rev faster than a V8, so boosting them will definitely unlock some serious power. Those modern ecoboost 4cyl are quick too. But its all aboutthe SOUND bro.. lol
If you can talk a company like Mace into sending one, they had rwd versions of the L67 that had the correct intake for this setup too. I've read about people having them sent over from Australia for cheap. Not as cheap as making your own but if you don't have the tools/skills/confidence to do it then that would be your best option.
The Buick V6 was one of the greats when it comes surprising V8 owners of course you can do alot with cubes but to have something unique and reliable go Buick V6 ! 👍👍👍😁
Definitely a significant build for a fbody. I have a 95 z28 lt1 and yes ls swap is not cheap after engine and transmission parts. Definitely like the build.
He’s acting fine, he’s proud of what he’s achieved and he should be, leave the guy alone, I’d like to see the ability & more importantly the patience of you and the 50 people who liked ur comment.
If you don’t want to cut on the supercharger, or want something a little more bolt on friendly, there are some m90 superchargers with the same manifold bolt pattern but the intake comes out the driver side right next to the screws. It came in various Australian market L36s
Love it. This swap has always run through my head. Definitely has cool factor. 3.08 isn't bad, probably great on the highway. The cam made the blower more efficient so you could good smaller now still without spinning that thing too fast
The holden commodores where offered with a l67 and supercharger. Interestingly enough the monaro came with one in cv6 trim. The rear tb portion is mostly identical to your setup just cast.
GM pushrod V6s from the lowest powered humblest 2.8 to the mighty 3.8 SC always sounded amazing . Even though the 2.8 was a crap motor it sounded throaty.
If you're ever in Michigan and want to know how far you can take a supercharged v6, I have a 89 t-bird SC 5 speed you can review. It has a 4.2 crank from an f150, 60lbs. Injectors, ported heads, bigger valves, headers, bigger cam, 3.73 diff gears, and a twin screw supercharger. It dyno'd at 430 whp and 500 wheel torque.
Doing the same build with my 02 mustang V6, 4.2 crank atroked forged rods and Pistons, block bored 20over, 310lph fuel pump, roller rockers and stiffer springs, turbo cam. Just alot of stuff, also custom widebody and cowl hood. One video in channel going to add more.
I drove my 96 3.8 v6 auto Camaro for a long time and then I had my 97 3.8 t5 for 8 years driven daily so I know these well. Thought about doing this as well just never got around to it. Very cool.
That’s awesome to hear. I just discovered these cars now. I got a 1997 Firebird 3.8 literally just hours ago lol. I also had a 99 Z28 for four years but wanted something different this time around. So glad to hear the 3800 are bullet proof engines!
Nice build brother I'm a aluminum welder myself and plan on doing this mod to my wife's 2000 firebird that already runs 15.6 NA the blower would be like the cherry on top of the SUNDAY GOOD JOB 👍
I squeezed a 15.4 out of mine at the drag strip, abused the clutch doing so but I am hoping to get it back to the strip for some times soon. Look forward to seeing yours in the groups!
The wife's car is auto but that y87 package actually comes with a 2700 stall converter that they gm doesn't list in the package but it's for the most part why it leaves the line good 2.1 60ft times not bad on radials
@@6ON6Firebird I wish the wife's car was stick but my 02 ss is but still have respect for the v6 cars they are cool in there own way and if you turbo it you have a MONSTER ON YOUR HANDS 😊
Love the L67 Supercharged package. So easy to work on and the damn thing is nearly bullet proof... and I'm mostly a Ford guy(we don't talk about the 3 Valve 5.4L). GM really out did themselves with that 3800 V6. As much as I love wrenching on Coyote's, I'll stop to wrench on a L67 anytime someone brings one to me. I blame Buick with their GNX really. Hell I've known a lot of diehard Fox body Mustang guys that will absolutely drool over a GNX if they get near one.
only had my 07 Grand Prix GT for a few months and I still cannot stop smiling. That little thing is torquey af. A little slow from the dig because of the looooong first gear and 2.96 final drive ratio but still smiles per mile
Thanks for sharing your build brother i appreciate it . I wannt to do this same build to my 96 vert and your explanation and website make it pretty straight forward . Thanks again
Fantastic build! Id love to see more pictures of the supercharger modifications, I saw a few on the website but im curious to see it at other angles too. Im looking to do the same swap myself, and would also like to know what brand the 4" aluminum 180 pipe was
When I had my 96 Camaro I wanted to L67 swap my 3800 Camaro. I liked the idea of a Supercharged V6 camaro far more than the run of the mill LS or LT car. But then I drove a C4 ZR1 and well that changed for me. But if I get another 4th gen I'm def going this route. Many times before I was on the fence of trading towards a Z28 or Trans Am. the cost I felt wasn't worth it.
I Picked up a 08 LS3Corvette years ago and with headers and a stall they go 10's at the track. I use mine on weekends only so it's been holding up great. It gets 30mpg on the highway.. It weighs 3175Lbs
I will have to look into that. I went with the genV for now because it was a bit easier to get ahold of and the m90 had been done before. That is very well a possibility though!
I probably did the slider thing with my t-56 and it locked in 3rd gear position but on the limiter but I could jerk it out. Now it does it every time I powershift but doesn’t if I don’t and shift as fast as I can. Pisses me off. I thought it was a shift fork but this is another idea. Cool car good power bro!!
Would love to see a dyno chart. My guess is that the LS would still prevail in total HP but the supercharged V6 should be a good contender for low-end torque, where most of your daily driving happens. Add the lighter rotating assembly and for a daily driver that would be a very snappy combo.
in addition to being a very cool mod, people who want to have a supercharged v6 fbody, will find the used v6 cars are often in much better condition because they dont get beat on as hard as the LS1s
I make this kind of power to the front wheels naturally aspirated from my 3.6 lfx DOHC direct injected v6 with intake, exhaust, tune on e85. 2012 impala.
@@IgniteLight Yep. True to the term SLEEPER. Best quarter mile time to date is 13.6 @ 103mph spinning the tires through first and most of second. It's a real shame the V6 engine has such a strange stereotype among hot-rodders because there's plenty of platforms out here that could be real fun daily drivers.
Good video, I have a 2002 V6 Camaro with a 5-speed and 3.23 rear gear. Only has 60,000 miles on it, and would LOVE to do this kind of improvement. If Jacob can provide better info on the parts that he located, the installation, tuning, etc., that would be great.
I don't know if I would day you CANT not have wind noise. There are definitely ways to make it much quieter. You could always pull the carpet and trim panels and install boom mats or some kind of sound deadening throughout the whole car, get some beefy seals all around. You mentioned you had some sound deadener but for best effect you have to get some custom fit deadened inserts in you wheel and fender wells to keep air from getting between the fender and doors. Not sure what kind of deadened you have either but it performance can vary massively between brands and types. You can even get crazy and line the firewall if you are feeling groggy and feel like pulling the dash out. I've been in a ws6 with straight headers and the guy did all of the things I mentioned plus had tired that were supposedly designed to reduce noise a lot. It was actually a lot quieter than my stock 3.8L without the cat. Like significantly quieter than mine. It was an experience
I’ve seen them fast N/A actually. It takes a lot of cash and work, but there was an 02 W68 car (the one with the factory body kit and 3.08’s) run high 12s on pump gas. No boost, no spray. Never see the guy anymore so I guess he sold it or whatever. Think it was punched out to like 4.1 or 4.2 L. Cam, headers, tune, etc, etc. high 12s low 13’s is exactly on par with a 6spd fbody with a factory LS1.
The old anniversary trans am was very fast with a 3.8 turbo just like the grand national engine I’m sure you port polish the heads and do cam and roller everything you can make that thing sick fast grand nationals use to pull willies on a vs6 done up the 4.3 typhoon ve and cyclone where also perfect example of fast v6
So I just got a 1995 firebird drop top with 77k “ original” miles. So they kids I got it from I think lowered. I was drive when I hit a bump at 35 and my mileage jumped to 188,888 I haven’t look in the dash yet but the car it in great condition so I think they got the car from a older person and they rolled it back is that something I should be concerned about? I’m very worried about it but I don’t know what to do besides look at the gauge cluster, what do you recommend?
@@xmo552 I would honestly would love to fully build the engine. ZZP performance has some really good parts for the 3.8 sc setup. H beam forged rods, beefy cams, a bunch of valvetrain parts and pistons. It possible to make close to 1000 horse with these engines. But realistically I wouldn't mind 600ish horse under my right foot.
I remember around 1996 in the now dead GM High tech performance magazine a story of someone doing the same thing with a 95 Trans am. And Pontiac made a prototype of one .of course it never made 😒 production.
3800s are an awesome motor. People's chief complaint is that they sound bad, but I am 100% convinced that is because of the stock exhaust manifolds. I've been building mine over time and while mine is currently NA and just barely comes close to making LT power, its not slow for a daily and it has been a whole lot cheaper than V8 swapping the car. I know its hard to compare to the V8 in sound quality (especially an LT1 Camaro with a Magnaflow exhaust and no cat), but the 3800 sounds awesome with headers and a Borla resonator.
Vv cool I have a 2002 camaro v6 that only has 50k on it. I have a lm7 5.3l that I was building for the car but after seeing this I’m starting to realize that this might be better. Yes building the v8 would be cool and sound great but it’s around 1-2k (with a cam and and supporting mods) just for the engine. In f body’s you need a ls k member which people want like 500 for and various other things and this is just an overall cheaper and pretty unique. I honestly am seriously thinking about just selling the v8 and buying a series 3 3.8l with the 5th gen m90 blower and just rebuild that motor.
Just do what makes you happy...but in all seriousness the LS powerplant is leaps and bounds better in every way. So much easier to make power just N/A. But if you're on a budget and you're a diy guy and just want to be different, then go for it man. I've always went against the grain as well...currently building a destroker, well technically it's just a big bore 4.8, I know it'll be gutless down low, but 4.8 crank, Manley 6.3" rods, -6cc domed pistons, ported 799 heads with ferrea oversized hollow stem light weight race valves, custom spec'd cam, 1.8 aluminum rockers, full on solid roller race lifters...plan was originally to twin turbo it, mate it to a close ratio t56 in a little Colorado or s10, and run some 4.10, maybe 4.56 gears target fuel cut redline 9,000rpm, target shift point 8,500 rpms. It gets sketchy at those rpms, the exponential amount of stress put on the stock crank for every 1000rpms really adds up at the top. Rotating assembly will be balance and lightened but still...lots can go wrong at those rpms, but just imagine the noise it would make with an 180° 8-into-1 turbo header. Of course it won't make the biggest horsepower but it would definitely be different and fun in the upper rpms and still 1000hp+, not a drag racer but would be an awesome road course setup imo. 315c.i. of pure fury 😆
@@just_another_gearhead i was actually thinking about a destroked ls, I have a ls1 in my garage with a chewed up crank. The block is good and you can get LR4's for cheap, slap in the crank and rods with ls1 pistons and you have a 5.1 liter LS1.
@@martinez1701a I have a set of ls1 1.305 compression height pistons, they're the ones that you use for 6.125 rods. If you use those pistons, with a 6.3" rod, like the rod for an RHS tall deck, and the stock 4.8 crank...you come out to 9.238, so just under 9.240 factory deck height. I have a set of Manley 6.3 rods too. I'd sell rods and pistons w/rings for $1500 right now, still in box, $1800 value, plus no wait time because they are custom ordered, took me 3 months to get them..before the pandemic. Also have a set of ferrea hollow stem race valves .050 larger...but thinking about keeping those, they cost like $1300 by themselves lol
Hey man I loved the build. I have a quick question I just picked up over the weekend 96 Camaro GEN 4 over 3.8. Wouldn’t need any different parts to do it.
wondering if i was to find a 5 speed 3800 comaro like a year 2000 with bad motor cheap and i have a 2000 3800 grad prix and i have a 2000 buck regal and do this swap with no super charger may 3800 arnt super charged so would wireing harness be the same or would i have to use wireing from one of my cars and will the ecm also work from the camro basicly wondering if plug and play if none of the cars arnt super charged
This is so cool. I heard you guys talking about the T-5 but I was wondering if he had that stock with his firebird? I've got a 3.8L '02 Camaro automatic and I was wondering how difficult it would be to swap in a T-5 if I ever come across one at the junk yard?
