I spent 3 months in a small rural village in Isaan and it drove me crazy. My days consisted of feeding the fish. Cutting grass for the Buffalo. Fencing off around the house to keep the Buffalo out. Feeding the chooks and ducks. The highlight of the week was going to the local market on a Friday night. There were only 3 of us that could speak English in the village. Myself. My girlfriend and a Belgium guy. I remember riding the motorbike down the road and the local kids pointing at me yelling out farang as though they had never seen a foreigner in their village before. I couldnt wait to get out of the place and get my sanity back. I have since returned a few times but only for a week at a time.

You have explained admirably why you ended up in the village. Fawn. When you find somebody who takes care of you so well you don't stray . Some farangs in cities can't reject temptations . When I was 60 , like you're now , I realised how to reject temptations too. I like the fence, it's very distinctive . I also like your steadfastness . Keep on truckin' !

The nice side of being in a rural Thai village is you get to know people and be known. The bad side is you get to know people and be known! 😂 Yep I am definitely a tout for Hua Hin! Forbes named it one of the top 3 retirement destinations in the world and well deserved in my opinion! You need to visit! Different class of expats here as opposed to Pattaya or similar tourist areas. Walmart at midnight! 😂 Epic! Love the wall! Very unique for the villages. Very nice parcel!

I do not recommend living in a village as a foreigner some foreigners can do it and feel fine living with the Thai people. Once you live in the village you become isolated. I prefer living in town where there are stores, malls, bars, coffee shops and restaurants.

My honeymoon phase lasted as long as it took me to learn the culture. I will spend much of my time there so I want to know the culture beyond tourist level. On the superficial level you probably can’t find a more polite society. But underneath it can be pretty ugly. Some cultures like American have everything out in the open. So it takes some getting used to. I’ve learned from living in South America though that if you get through the disappointment phase(?) you can find your lane.

A foreigner in the village is always in the spotlight with the Thai people that are residents in the village. They consider a foreigner as a guest and not a permanent resident. I never walked around in the village without a bamboo stick as stray dogs will bite. I never understood why Thai law allows dogs to run lose in the streets.

Hi Robb! It's been a while since I commented on your videos, but that does not mean I don't still enjoy your thought-provoking videos. Right on about the dogs...My first neighborhood here in Pattaya was rife with them and I couldn't walk anywhere without fear. Now I live in a little more secluded place in the dark-side and cats seem to rule the neighborhood. I did have one dog stalk me the other day on the soi next to me...I thought about starting to carry a bamboo stick with me and remembered your advice regarding old men carrying canes. 555. My Thai girlfriend has no issues yelling at me (nor me her) ...I know we have entertained the neighbors several times and I also know the brunt of the 'blame' is thoroughly on my shoulders. Anyway, just a hello and a 'thank you' for the vids. Your land is HUGE! ha!

Getting chased and bitten by stray dogs is definitely no fun - been there, done that. Fortunately, I did not have to get the rabies shot series, but I was laid up for a month, while my foot healed. And, it really sucks at night, when you get packs of dogs chasing after you, esp. if you are on a bicycle. Can we assume from your comments that you have not yet found a solution for the soi dog problem? If you ever do, please make sure to vlog it - you would be doing a great public service! If I had some property that I could fence off, as you are doing, I think I might consider setting up a large area soi dog trap - a fenced area designed to attract & contain (in a humane manner, ofc) the soi dogs in the neighborhood - and then hire some folks to cage and truck them off to be released somewhere else... far, far away (like the jungle border of Burma). Great content, as always! Keep rambling on ... :)

Great comment! And I completely understand your implications there. And agree with you. One of my security protocols is probably going to be for me to buy a 12 or 16 pound sledgehammer and just set it down next to the house after explaining to Fawn its potential purpose. That may sound a bit draconian or something, but I’ve just found it supposed to be upfront with people where they stand with me.
@AlexofCharmCity
@AlexofCharmCity 5 месяцев назад
@resetwithrobb I'd do it the opposite way and this might sound crazy. But if I wanted a house a certain way, I'd build it, I'm also not into the mcmansions, probably similar to yours with an added bathroom and office. Then just give it to her. Immediately say it's yours. When they don't want me there anymore just tell me and I'll leave. That way I wrap my head around the reality of the situation right away. I don't believe in fighting to stay in a place that no one wants me and even less reason to destroy a home for the people I cared about at one point. I think you are doing a good thing, whether it last a year or 20, either way it's good for you.

Robb, I don't hear of many or any African Americans living in the province. Could you give me your honest take on that?
@resetwithrobb
@resetwithrobb 2 месяца назад
I just made a video about a little bit of this, there is relatively significant prejudice based on skin tone here, so that will 100% weigh in on someone who is of African descent. Having said that I can say, if it’s an American fellow then that’s still gonna hold a lot of sway culturally. They absolutely have an infatuation with American culture. The three African-Americans that I have bumped into here all seem to be doing quite a bit better, and I mean really quite a lot better than the average western retiree here. So I think it’s absolutely a navigable culture, and 100% you will find Thai women attracted to you as well, but it will be a smaller subset. Based on the fact that the guys ran into seemed way way cooler than most of the other guys here, if you’re coming out my way, definitely hit me up, pal, and we’ll hang out
