It's the great Acura vs Lexus reliability battle where I let you know whether or not there is any luxury car brand that can stand up against Lexus. We're talking reliability, which means ownership costs or maintenance costs, depreciation, and just how much fun one of these Acura or Lexus cars are to own.
Where we believe that Life's Too Short To Drive Boring Cars so we just don't and you shouldn't either.

The fact that Acura/Honda stuck with the 3.5L V6 is why we went with a 2023 Acura MDX over the Lexus RX350's tiny overstressed turbo. I have owned several Lexus and Acura vehicles and they have always been great, but I think we are going to see a real divide now that Toyota is using all tiny turbos and hybrids. Great review. As an owner of an 06 Base TL with 400,000 miles on the original auto transmission I must disagree with the unreliability of said auto trannies. The "secret" that most people are oblivious to is that using the parking brake everytime you park will protect and preserve the life of the car's transmission. This applies to all cars not just Honda/Acuras.

To be fair, Acura's newest 10 speed is reliable. The horrendous 5 speed is no longer made, and the other horrendous transmission, the 9-speed, is no longer at Acura. The issues with the 10-speed have been mostly due to an electronic module, easy fix. Acura's less reliable than Lexus and their immediately previous era has been less reliable than BMW, but that's compensated by Acura's reliability climbing back up to above the Germans and Genesis due to Acura's new era

I have owned both Toyota and Honda. I like both. Honda makes stronger engines but the older Honda engines are interference engines which can be disastrous if the timing belts are not replaced timely. Also Honda transmission boxes do not shift as smooth as Toyota either especially with the heavier SUVs. A friend of mine owned a 2000 Acura MDX and she got several problems with the transmission box. Her husband kept the MDX well maintained but the transmission blew up around the 150K miles mark. Lexus ride is quieter and smoother. Acura seems to be zippier but the fit, the finish, and the ride quality is not as nice as Lexus. If I were to pick either a Lexus franchise or an Acura franchise, I would pick the Lexus franchise any day. I would never own a Nissan or Infinity. The first 100K Nissan and Infinity seem just as good as Acura or Lexus. But I do not believe Nissan and Infinity are known for long term reliability. I sold my 2000 Camry that was built in Japan to the younger brother of my mechanic in 2013 when the odometer reading was roughly 250,000 miles. He is still driving that 2000 Camry a few months ago when I brought my Civic to his brother's shop for routine maintenance.

@@64arguz yes, cheaper luxury cars borrow engines and transmissions from their affordable counterpart. Great manufacturers have unique engines and transmissions along with features in their luxury brand and when they start age they put them in their affordable cars. The other thing I look at is resale value. In my experience, Acura does not seem to hold as well as Lexus. My wife drives a 2020 RDX A-Spec. AWD system is amazing. The one area needing improvement is the brakes. Squeak a lot and when they are wet, they moan a little more. Dealer says they’re fine. I don’t know. 😜

I would have to disagree with you on this. We've bought Acuras going back to the 1998 2.5TL to a 2021 TLX A-Spec and they have been extremely reliable with no major repairs ever. Also you compared two older Acuras to two new Lexus models, come on the TL you showed was last sold in 2008 that's really not a fair comparison. Next time compare models from the same year just to be fair at least. Nothing personal still like your videos and still a fan, thanks.

I'll say it depends on how the owner maintains the car currently have an uncle and a cousin who own Acura's and love them while his ex wife and her two siblings all own Toyotas a Corolla a Camry and a Prius respectively. Aunty Ann is going on her 6th Corolla Suzanne drives a Camry XLE V6 and Chris drives a Prius also my late maternal grandmother owned 2 Camrys a 1990 dark red Pearl and a 2005 Sand pearl beige LE my younger brother inherited in 2016 which currently has 35,000 miles on it granted because Camrys are so common they have a lower resale value than something like a Hyundai Azera though not by much but that has a higher resale value because its a rarer car in 19 model years the Azera only sold 201,435 units in the US where as in that same time period Camry sold 7.7 million units in the US an average 403,000 annually thus is worth $4,007 less as a trade in at $5,412 while the Azera is worth 9,419 and that with 13,000 less miles on the Odometer and 7 years newer

I would agree with you 100% on your analysis.👌One of the weakest points in Honda / Acura is their Transmissions especially when they get some miles on them. That carbon buildup was the main issue I have really noted with a Lexus.. Toyota corrected that issue when they started incorporating direct fuel injection and port fuel injection . Those engines are very reliable now and the engines really stay clean. Henceforth IMPROVED Dynamic Forced Engines They are used and a lot of new Toyotas as well as hybrids with various electric motors.

F1 tests the FULL manufacturers abilities. Honda is the only one that succeeded consistently and most recently than Toyota. That ability filters down and I say Honda is the one to trust. Any shortcoming is not only an exception but also not their fault as likely a locally sourced assembly or 3rd party part. Honda makes honest products as a reflection of traditional Japanese values and Honda is more Japanese than even Nissan (Renault ties) or Mazda (Ford ties) or even Toyota (Bmw ties)

Honda lost a lot when Mr Honda died and it went downhill quite a bit. They don't pay their US workers very well and it shows up in lower quality. They now spec many made in China parts so another source for poor quality. Overall the biggest problem Honda has is a reversal of early tradition of warranty and service. They refuse to warranty failures whereas they did before. Or course engines continue to show high quality in design and assembly. Also suspension, steering, and braking designs are fairly reliable.
