Turn it into a protein powder, and you have a winner. Most protein powders aren't complete proteins. But if algae is, it stands to reason that it can replace many of the soy-based protein powders on the market.

They never said it was a complete protein, they said it has all the essential amino acids, only 6 out of the 21 amino acids are considered essential. Although having all the essential ones is helpful.

I feel like a problem would be that while this could serve as a way to make food healthier, it’s not going to drive out larger types of agriculture/ food cultivation. People are still going to want their variety of different food options and the algae farms are just providing another variety to food ,not solving the issue of resource overuse. It’s also possible that this could ironically could end up contributing to the issue a small amount as well.

Well, if you follow protocol, edible varieties of seaweed (algae of the sea, in Spanish) can be like spinach, etc. People that are unwilling to eat it still need enough iodine for endocrine health (e.g. thyroid gland), so the U.S. government ensures that almost all table salts contain iodine.

Being able to grow productively in ocean water is a big selling point. It would probably do very well in competition for desert growth real estate. The strain of Spirulina that I developed for norther growing in winter can grow in ocean water, and we use evaporated seawater as part of it's nutritional needs, but it doesn't do as well in ocean water as it does it fresh water. Of course, we can also fully recycle our water usage, and by covering the tanks we don't have losses due to evaporation. (Spirulina, btw, is a cyanobacteria. Not an algae. That gives it an advantage over algae, which cannot be fully digested without processing due to it's cellulose based cell walls. Another advantage is that algae cannot be legally grown in most US cities. It's also 65% protein, and likewise has all the nutrients humans need, except for Vitamin D)

i hope they can get the price down to low enough to use as animal fodder, if they can get down lower than that, then other conventional farmlands can be diverted to human consumption crops, and they can still revolutionize the industry of animal fodder production. I can still eat my meat. and the world still gets more food total. i don't tink they're gonna succeed in getting ppl to eat algae as a normal thing.
@adamklam1
@adamklam1 6 лет назад
I suppose I'm a pessimist, butI mean, there's food enough to feed the world right now, yet we still raise livestock for meat now whilst others starve. I suspect it wont be any different in the future. I feel like the likelihood of people adopting algae and giving up meat seems lower than that of converting algae to livestock feed, whilst a portion of the world goes hungry. Theres plenty of things that we know we should do to prepare for the future, but won't, and instead quietly let others fall through the cracks and pretend we have nothing to do with the outcome. that's just how things have worked out for the last few hundred years.

East Asians have been eating algae for centuries, it is not a food of future it is actually happening right now. Nori, black paper like wrapping used in Californian rolls is just one type of many varieties of algae. Japanese, Koreans and Chinese are farming algae massively and we eat it almost every day. Yes it is not a staple like rice, but it is almost like a staple as a side dish.

Crops and cattle will have reduce production after algae takes off for environmental reasons. Then it will become extremely expensive so no one but the rich can afford it. Forcing others to pay for algae at the same cost regular food is today. Even though they will in the beginning promote it being a cheap alternative especially for the poor.

What about the safety of trying algae, is the sea water even filtered and treated, can the algae cause infections and weaken our immune system, what about the open platform of this algae farm; any dust or impurity can join in the food, i think this is not going to end up well.

Use Pre-Flood environmental conditions and you can use just a fraction of the total land area. We have other technologies that were discovered in the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s. By combing them all together in a integrated system to produce a synergistic process we were able to mass produce edible food micro-algae by the hundreds of metric tons per day with just one unit inside a small warehouse.

Maybe you can make algae into flour or maybe you can use it for coloring things such as pie crust pizza dough and more? Maybe you can even substitute it for spaghetti and meat sauce?!?
