Is America's culture war relevant to Britain?

In recent years, and especially since the murder of George Floyd in 2020, American discourse seems to increasingly drive global conversations and shape political alignments. How relevant are American arguments to the British context? And do we lose anything locally - in politics, culture, and society - when we import American themes?
Public event co-hosted by Persuasion and the Equiano Project.

Very good discussion this. Also enjoyed the increasingly steamed up windows, as the discussion progressed, making it look like a scene from a quaint Christmas card

Religion is definitely a key player in the culture wars of both the UK and the US. in the US, topics like abortion and LGBTQ+ rights will always trigger debates rooted in religious beliefs.... and this is where you see the intensifying of the conservative-liberal divide.

The UK has many religions too. Wokeness is a type of religion as per John McWhorter.

I saw all of this discussion. I think many important issues might have been discussed. One of the main problems with post modern structurally marxist critical theory wokeness is that it is a large negative supply shock on the UK economy. It is one of the many reasons why the UK's per capita income is less than 2/3rds that of the USA, in nominal and PPP terms. it is one of the reasons why the UK has a lower per capita income than South Korea and African Americans. 83% of foreign UK students leave the UK within 5 years of arriving. The UK also has high rates of outward emigration among skilled and talented workers. The UK has terrible K-12, GCSE, A levels performance. And the problem is multi-ethnic (with some exceptions such as Ghanaians, Nigerians, Jews, Chinese, Indians, Iranians, perhaps Scotts, Welsh and Irish.) I would love to have heard more about what the UK can do to sharply improve per capita real GDP, and the UK's long term ability to attract and retain talent. This, for me, is one of the main reasons to take on wokeness. I am curious if disparate impact in terms of socio-economic outcomes by group is entering the legal system in the UK. With all the liability issues that brings up for businesses and people in the UK. I am also curious about what affirmative action, preferences, set asides, quotas, subsidies the UK has by group to "help" certain lower socio-economic performing groups. I would also have loved to hear why black britons are 25 times as likely to be murdered as ethnic English in the UK? Why the UK has allowed so many BAME, immigrant and ethnic girls to be raped by grooming games? Why the UK has so much honor violence against liberal muslim females and lbgtrq+, and why the police and legal system refuse to stop it? Why does the UK not stop violence and threats against liberal muslims in general inside the UK? Why Britain refuses to stop FGM against muslim females in the UK? Why the UK has so much anti Jewish violence, threats and bigotry? Why to a lesser degree are anti Indian bigotry and threats increasing. Why do ethnic English talk about their "privilege" when so many other groups of people inside Briton and around the world do better than them, or are rising rapidly. I would also love to learn if African British ripped males are at the top of the dating market the way African American ripped males dominate the US dating market. What the dating market is like for African British females. I would also be curious to learn why the UK doesn't study other countries, cultures and civilizations and try to learn from them about how to improve Britain. I think Britain has much to learn from Africa. Magotte Wade often says that if some african countries became economic miracles, this would get rid of 80% of anti "black" bigotry around the world. Do these panelists agree? If a large group of the African diaspora became very successful, would this also get rid of 80% of anti "black" bigotry around the world? Please have future events with Tomiwa Owolade. Thanks.

I'm not finding Sonia Sodha intresting. She seems to only have one agenda, which isn't that relevant to the topic at hand. The gentlemen speakers and the audience shine more light on the issue

I didn't understand what she meant by the UK not having gender equality. I believe her that the UK is a patriarchy. And a not completely positive patriarchy at that. But I didn't understand why she thought the UK didn't have gender equality. In general, I don't think she articulated herself well in this discussion. Some patriarchies are positive. Some matriarchies are positive. and some slightly lbgtq+ led societies are positive. We need positive mature cultures and civilizations. This is more important than whether a society tilts slightly female, male, or lbgtq+. I know she grew up in the UK and all. But she has cultural heritage from India. And India has many living matriarchies. The world is full of matriarchies. Positive. And negative (I consider part of wokeness to be unstructured unfocused undirected young female energy.) I liked the other panelists better. And could understand them better. Tomiwa Owolade was my favorite. [Would love to see a lot more of him.] Followed by the beautiful ever elegant Inaya Iman.

Here’s Sonia Sodha once again obsessed with talking about trans people… Ask her why she continues to block people on Twitter who challenge her, debunk her lies and why she doesn’t allow comments on any of her Guardian/Observer articles on this topic… embarrassed for her.
