I think this’ll be a perfect B camera especially in a pinch. For interviews keep your A camera with a longer lens for that nice bokeh, but for a wide B angle you’re not getting that shallow anyway so as long as the colors and DR match you’re set. Finally gonna upgrade my 2017 iPhone XR 😂
The noise, the details in the grass, depth of field etc etc. Even though iPhone has the best video in a smartphone is not even close to a mirrorless camera yet.
@charvlim5159 R100 still wins. The APS-C sensor is capable of capturing more light and depth of field. My 10 year old Canon T5i that maxes out at 1080p 30 still looks better than my Galaxy S22 Ultra recording at 4k. Phones will never look as good as dedicated mirrorless cameras that have APS-C or full frame sensors. I can see future high end phones maybe getting micro four third sensors, and along with some AI tricks might get close to APS-C cameras, but those phones will probably be a little bulky, very expensive and have limited video recording times due to heat issues.
I recently used a iPhone 15 Pro Max as a B-cam for a music video with my fx30 and I'm BEYOND surprised as to how CLOSE the image is people can't tell what shots are iPhone
Was pretty easy to tell which was which, that being said the Iphone was still prettty nice & also super handy if you were just out and about without the FX3, also much more inconspicuous
Great content, much appreciated. As a filmmaker and an early adopter, I made the transition from 16/36mm film to video many years ago, staying ahead of the curve. Recently, in January, I decided to part ways with my Sony A7siii and 10 lenses. I used the proceeds to fully invest in an iPhone 15 Pro Max, while still holding onto my Sony FS7. Although I've been an early adopter in the past, this time, I find myself slightly late to the party. Nevertheless, I'm actively learning from others, aiming to catch up by June. I'm awaiting new announcements from NAB in April before considering any further gear purchases. These are exciting times.
I could see better dynamic range on the iPhone. Except for the depth of field, the colors, details and DR match pretty well between the two (at least if general audience is considered). Throw in a tele lens on the main sensor of the iPhone and we have some shallow depth! Weird times.
That was a good job matching, I'm glad to see Apple is trying to push video farther instead of stagnating. If you're planning more Apple Log comparisons, the closest Android comparison would be something like an s23 or Pixel 8 running MotionCam. As others have noted, doing a more leveled comparison between the FX3 (by stopping it down) vs Apple Log vs MotionCam would be really interesting.
@@dunnadidit Soooo this video stuck in my head and the day after I watched it, I got so curious I just did my own tests between my A7III and my s23 running MotionCam 😅 It was a ton of fun! I was able to get my S23 to match my A7iii to a surprising degree, it did take some more intense color grading but the fact I got close was super inspiring for the future of phone filmmaker. Not hanging up my ILC anytime soon though 😛
The color itself and dynamic range are pretty similar which is amazing. I would be curious if the f stop on the fx3 was at say f7 if the results would have tricked more people haha
@@Gabriel-hv1yu yeah if it’s right next to a professional camera I can choose a favorite but by no means if it’s on it’s own will I be nitpicking the iPhones video quality
Easy to tell which was which side by side. I found the blacks lacking in dynamic range immediately vs the fx3 but if you quickly clipped together video I wouldn't notice or have cared.
@@dunnadidit I am really debating switching over (back) to iPhone for some of the log capabilities but honestly I can't kid myself I wouldn't shoot in log 🤣 SOOC it goes 🙂
Quick guess is iPhone on right, Sony on left. Th depth of field was the only way I could guess. iPhone is so close at this point, for most shooters it can work for 90% of the needs today.
Nice video man, I started with Premiere back N days and played with Sony Vegas and then FCPE. FCPX got me lazy after mastering that. Seems like the new King of NLE is Da Vinci Resolve. It is so powerful. Have to learn the nodes system.
Can you give me some advice on this equation. If I plan on filming a firefly at night. or at sunset, and i want the best picture. but also i want to do it with easy simplicity with no color correcting etc for the most part. is the iphone15 pro a better option or is the fx6 better? looking for ease of use but also a great picture. Is it worth learning fx6 color correction etc to get a better picture and is it complicated? it looks complicated imo. thanks

I do understand why you did it the way you did, but personally I'd prefer to see them shot with similar DoF. In any case, the iPhone is definitely a beast. Wild stuff these days. Thanks for the vid!
The left footage is the Sony. I didn’t have to look at the color. I just noticed that the footage on the right always looked like it was shot at f12 lol
Then why are most cinema cameras APS-C sized sensors? If you truly believe that, I assume you are using at the very least a medium format sensor camera right?
@@Gabriel-hv1yu Yes I agree with you about that. In my case I still prefer a shallow focus to give footage the footage 3 dimensional look compared to a flat looking footage. But In color grading both of them are doing great.
@@michaelbell75 It's impossible to achieve the depth of field of full frame sensors without breaking the law of physics. Unless they perfected it by faking the depth of field through computational photography. But stll...it's fake.
@@rexmanigsaca398Not impossible at all. Look at the telescoping lens. You are getting an optical zoom from a tiny, non moving lens. Apple and Google have very smart people working for them. They will figure it out soon. Even still, I have shots taken in portrait mode you would never know were taken with an iPhone. FOCOS is also an app that lets you perfect those shots.
