I just cancelled my iBook pro order after watching this when I told the store I wanted to cancel after watching this video they refused to cancel the order. I was forced to stop payment on the check.
The problem is that everything is proprietary and apple spends so much effort to prevent an aftermarket supply. They might as well brick a whole system if you so much as unscrew a screw.
If you're really quite and you listen carefully, you can hear the faint sounds of a shit storm over at Apple as they try to figure out how Linus got his hands on a new logic board.
Not really, They have serial numbers and if the repair was done correctly you have to flash the board with the serial number of the Mac as well. Used to be a certified repair tech back in 2010. All of these parts are tracked, They more than likely already know the shop or place that got them the board.
All those fanboys at “Apple Insider” leaping to the defence of a corporation that doesn’t give a shit about them in the blind hope they get noticed by Sensei Tim Cook is just sad.
This was essentially an Apple Content Cop! And guess what, I have no problem with that! As an Apple user for most of my life (own droids and PCS too) I have been increasingly frustrated with them, especially when it comes down to right to repair and and how Anti-Consumer they are...
+Moirarxos I'm not a grammar nazi, but if you're going to call people low IQ, saying 'you can see everywhere low iq people' makes you look like a great example of the Dunning-Kruger effect.
For the last few years, I've been using Apple products just for work (I used macbooks and ipod touchs personally circa 2009). And I hate it haha. But I kind of need it to build iOS apps and sign them to the app store and whatnot. Unless someone tells me that there is some non-hacky way to do that on Linux/Windows hahaha
Nannin you would want an apple if are working on a product that works only on iOS, like final cut pro, so I can't fault other people here. But yeah, this video shows that you have no security on buying an apple product, and maybe you should try adobe premier pro.
@Dfue77 Every user is bound to break it at one point (especially that vesa adapter), it's just the way Apple handles the problem. They do a terrible job.
As a former Apple Specialist & Apple Authorize Repair Center, I can concur all this is true. Apple knows you simply can compete with their lawyers. Apple can and will "kick anyone they desire out of their sandbox!"
It is true that no individual could compete with the lawyers but what about class actions with backing from EFF. The real trick is getting the Repair Centers to work together as a unit instead of going it alone but yes apple's behavior is illegal
I've had idiot Apple fanboys whose response to the pricing issue was: It costs that much to repair because apple parts are different from "normal" PC parts.
I don't know about Canada, but in the U.S., "Warranty Void If Removed" stickers are *illegal* and cannot be used to deny you service! You may want to check the Canadian laws. Whatever your equivalent of America's FTC (Federal Trade Commission) would, I'm sure, have a lot to say about this! With that in mind, go buy yourself a new iMac Pro, swap out its motherboard for yours, and then return it as defective. If they won't let you *pay* for the damn repair at a reasonable price, then you have to work the system to make things right.
They just announced that a few months ago, so im not sure if previous work will be eligible. www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2018/04/11/601582169/warranty-void-if-removed-as-it-turns-out-feds-say-those-warnings-are-illegal
And that's exactly why I think it's valid to have warranty void if removed sticker placed so people like you don't exploit it with dishonest tactics like buying new and swapping the board, I'm not just talking about apple, this applies across the board
The point of not having the warrenty void sticker is so that u dont have to do such under handed tactics. If it wasn't for the same law that covers the warrenty stickers then u would have to take ur car to a dealership anytime it had to be serviced. Warrenty void stickers do the same thing and require OEM replacement at OEM facilities
The fcc statement is due to the 1975 Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. Therefore the blow up is not a new change but one that is starting to be semi-enforced as far as I can tell. Although good luck suing the company's without lots of funding.
How dare you imply that Apple's practices are illegal? Yes, they're unethical, despicable, near _inhuman_ in some aspects but I'll be *gosh dang darned* if you say that this wonderful and innovative offshore tax-haven using corporation is not playing by the rules! I almost puked while writing this joke...
DONT GIVE ME IDEAS! My boss on this studio build project got one, instead of letting me make a custom system - geez what a POS (Both he AND the Mac - as he kinda neglected to pay) - I considered throwing it from the window, but the only recyclable would be the CPU,even the RAM's proprietary ffs!
As a former Certified iOS Technician, I can confirm this. In Puerto Rico the AASP is required to take the device into the shop for 5-7 days while the replacement part gets there and hope it works. If it doesn't, another 5-7 days while the replacement phone gets to the shop. If your screen broke, you had to pay basically full price for a "refurbished" phone because they don't send LCD replacements to Puerto Rico. And no, they wouldn't let us keep replacement parts/devices in stock for quicker service. You wouldn't imagine how many people threaten you over the service's quality. And to make matters worse, there's only one shop in the entire island which is certified to service Apple's products.
As far as I've seen, repair shops here in P.R. either buy damaged phones to scavenge working parts off them or they buy their stock from shady e-bay sellers that get their hands on "counterfeit" parts.
small shops in PR make a killing installing china\ebay screen replacements and keeping the original screens that only the digitizer is cracked for even more profit by reselling later. $$$$
+Danny Rodriguez Yep. You have to be REALLY careful here, and do your research as to whom you take your devices to. Some even swap out parts between customer's devices (I've "worked" at a shop and the owner forgot to order two RAM modules for a customer that was supposed to pick up their iMac that day, so he just took two modules from a working machined that only needed a new Hard Drive). Still, its almost impossible to get original parts here without buying dead devices from locals, so eBay is the best friend for most repair shops here.
This is why I've never been interested in becoming Apple certified. Total waste of time and money. You get "authorized" by Apple to become a glorified mail-in repair service and you have to completely restructure your entire business model, from the looks of your store and your employees all the way up to how you actually fix things. Yeah..."authorized repair". I find it completely backwards. You become Apple Authorized so you can get real Apple parts and fix things...but you are penalized and screwed over every single time you try to access that supply chain you just spent a ton of money and time getting access to. Apple doesn't want you to fix their devices. They think even their own technicians are too stupid to work on their stuff. They think their hardware is the second coming of Jesus and they don't want anybody "tarnishing" their (im)perfect image. Lisa Jackson, Apple's VP of "policy and social initiatives" (let's just call her a spokesperson) even said that iPhones are "too complex" to be repaired, going on to say that their products are designed for "durability, not repairability". Yeah, durability! We throttled your phone's CPU because your battery was so bad that it couldn't deal with peak performance requirements. That's durability alright. Apple also stated in court recently that iPhones are only manufactured to be guaranteed to last at least one year. This isn't a company anybody should be supporting. EDIT Also, the bit about the warranty sticker is total insanity. I don't know how many times you have to say it, but sending something for a PAID REPAIR SERVICE is not a warranty! The condition of a warranty sticker SHOULD NOT MATTER for this at all.
Their whole repair system is a massive scam. Everybody who buys Apple products says that you "should have just gotten AppleCare" when you run into a problem. AppleCare functions as a special ticket that grants you access to repair options that should be the standard. Why do I need to have a special ticket to get a reduced price on an out-of-warranty device swap? Also, AppleCare is limited. You are only allowed to file a very small number of incidents before it's no longer valid. To me, that sounds like extortion. Extorting your customers for repair services that should be the de facto standard for what you're selling is wrong. Something that I find strangely ironic about Apple's repair ecosystem is their repair and warranty terms. To make a long story short, Apple dictates everything about how you get your device serviced if you want the warranty to be maintained. You have to bring it to them for screen repairs, you have to bring it to them for battery replacements, etc. But...let's say you drop your iPhone and the screen breaks. Well, at that point, any service conducted by Apple is considered "out-of-warranty repair", because the warranty becomes null and void if the screen is cracked. So, they want to rule everything about how you use the device you paid money for....right up until you actually need to use their services. At that point, they want nothing to do with giving you free service. Now, I'm not saying that Apple should fix broken screens for free. What I'm saying here is why is my warranty in jeopardy at all if I decide to take my phone elsewhere for a screen replacement? The terms are void. The warranty no longer applies to my device. At that point, it should not matter what I do to get it fixed.
Apple used to be very intelligently made devices for tech literate people, they used to make it, 'cool to be nerdy.' Oh how companies fall... When Apple thinks different, they think destructive.
I don't understand how anyone can defend or support Apple after this. What an amazing sheep culture I would never let this topic die if I was linus until Apple is buried or changes policy
just look at Donald Trump. The man literally telling Ecuador to not support Breast Feeding policies or trade will cease, claims New York Times is lying, and yet people still defend him. Sheep Culture is Sheep Culture. Folks just chose their shepard and run with it.
'Warranty void if removed' stickers are illegal and illegitimate. The Federal Trade Commission in the US has warned companies like Apple to stop putting them on their products. If a consumer opens a product and does not actually damage anything, the company is still 100% obligated to honor the warranty. End of story.
Dustin Rodriguez really sweet cuz my gaming consoles i open and blow all the dust out. love the ps2 for that have not been able to open a xbox one like that tho.
That's the theory. Practice is that actually getting whichever company to admit this and behave legally may require significant effort - in some cases actual LEGAL effort, with costing considerations etc. And that's how they end up on the winning end without really trying...
I needed to replace a 1TB SSD in a MacBook Pro... Apple wanted $1,900 CAD for the new part, and an extra $300 if I did not return the failed SSD. Apple is terrible.
Anyone else think it is wrong that a company started by young adults hacking together computers in their garage is now ACTIVELY making it impossible for others to do the same?
But where's the fun in hacking if there aren't people out there to stop you. They were just hacking to dick around and have fun not maliciously. Also if Apple makes an impenetrable iPhone and someone hacks into it, then 1) bragging rights and 2) they can charge stupid money!!
ROSSMAN TO THE ROSCUE!!! :D. Can't wait, It's so satisfying seeing Louis roast apple on their anti-consumer policies on repair. This time he'll be doing it on a channel with 6 Million subscribers. Get ready Apple, the internet is coming. :D
I remember one day when my iphone wasnt turning on i went to the apple store to see if they can help me, a couple people said it was fryed nd nothing could be done to repair it. I went home to google some stuff and they said to hold the home button and power button at the same time and it worked. I just found it hilarious that they didn't even try that
yeah happened to me with my dads MB Air, once it just turned off all of a sudden and didnt turn on, authorized reseller (we dont have any Apple Stores in my country yet, but these guys sell only Apple products so they should know what they are doing, because they dont sell any other brand) said the mother board is fried and they will replace it for 12 000,- (new MB same model/year would cost 21 000,-) so my dad was like "screw it", and bought the newest MB available instead, but i was like nah mate, there is no way, so i did a bit of quick research on google, tried some hard resets etc, nothing worked so i took it to IT department in our advertising agency, they tried the same things i did (i dont know why it didnt work for me tho) and in like 10 minutes the MacBook was up and running. So the point of this story is, IT guys that are fixing internet and servers in freakin advertising agency were able to repair in 10 minutes laptop that was "unrepairable" for authorized Apple techs and they wanted to charge for the non-broken part half the price of new MacBook Air...
Sadly, some people are tricked and buy the new phone anyways. My friend had her iPhone 6s "fry" and she wasn't one to protest, so she bought the 8 right then and there.
THE A BUTTON That sounds a lot like what happened to my old phone. In my case the battery was going bad, so I replaced it with a brand new one. Now it works perfectly fine, but I had to get a new phone anyway because it was 3 years old. The same thing could very well be happening to your ipod. One way I knew it was a battery problem is that it turned on immediately when I put it on charge.
I made the switch to PC after about 15 years of owning macs. It's the OS that makes a mac a really great computer for productive tasks, but I'm very happy to notice that Windows finally caught up in a lot of regards. The last straw for me was upgrading the drive and RAM in a 21 inch 2017 iMac: You can't access the ram slots without disassembling the whole thing, and disassembling means un-gluing the screen with some tiny pizza cutter looking apparatus and removing the logic board. A small bit fell off when I removed the logic board and I thought that was the end of it, but it still booted (though I suspect it created some instability with USB devices). I then discovered that the drive configuration with the new SSD was not accepted by Bootcamp and I could no longer install Windows on the thing. ***It should be easy to upgrade basic components in a personal computer, and doing so should not remove functionality or void warranties.*** I'm now the proud owner of a fantastic modern gaming PC I built myself and everything I did on the Mac works flawlessly on it. I have the added bonus of being able to game with very high to ultra settings at over 60 fps! I regret nothing!
にゃあエイリアンMeowAlien wish Linus would talk about the farmers fighting for right to repair too, apple and other big companies showed up at a hearing for john deer going against right to repair sending a bunch of lawyers.
Even people at Apple Insider are getting roasted. I just took a look at the recent comments after this video and they are in damage control now. appleinsider.com/articles/18/04/18/apple-refusing-to-fix-youtubers-imac-pro-claims-low-on-facts-light-on-details
I'm so glad you are exposing Apple's despicable business practices!!! Most of its customers are not tech savvy and we need to inform them. Keep up the fight, Linus!
Shinobi Engineer My thoughts, exactly. The only reason Apple's tech is actally being sold at the sky high prices they charge for it, are the less tech savvy consumers who think having an iPhone makes you look cool.
random callsign if it’s a crap company then there’s a LOT of crap companies out there. I personally think Apple is wrong in this situation. But I’m not going to the stupidly drastic point that I’m saying they are a crap company. I can guarantee you that Linus tech will keep using Macs. If he doesn’t he will be attempting to substitute his iMac and the convenience of it with other computers. Which will be EXTREMELY hard. So I’m not trying to start a keyboard mashing war. I’m trying to open your eyes to the fact that, just because a company has made/is making a slip up doesn’t instantly make them a crap company. Almost all content creators and high production maniacs will still choose Macs just because it doesn’t have a practical rival.
Except there is nothing that mac can do that can''t be done on other systems. It is neither faster nor more stable, software stack is all that matters and all the major players do have windows soft. I can hardly think of a reason why anyone would use mac and all these "content creators and high production maniacs" that use mac probably do so because they don't know any better. You can get same form factor and the same or better hardware as any apple product from other companies so there is rivalry. Even if there wasn't and apple products would be somehow special they would still be horrible company with their business practices
i don't think microsoft is all that bad though, sure they do things that are not consumer-friendly, but that's because they need to keep people in the environment, rather than letting them leave to other parts of the market, and losing large amounts of sales. they probably have done about as much in negatives as any tech giant has.
Never in my life have I had an Apple product. Never in my life have I wanted an Apple product. Never in my life will I buy an Apple product. Never in my life will I recommend an Apple product.
Im a pc builder your not special or smarter for doing so, if you ever got a samsung or a haweii product that be ironic. I enjoy on a good balance money, quality many tecnology, dont entitle yourself.
Samsung fixed my note8 after my stupid brother used soap and water to wash off stains on the phone, and when the phone was submerged in water, they replaced everything for free. Plus they replaced the charging entrance that was destroyed due to spilling bond in the pot. This was done by me, but they fixed it for free anyway😭 after that i became a hardcore fan
@@Andy-ko3zt i'm aware that note 8 is IP68, but it does not mean that you can wash the machine with soap and water. No machines are able to endure that.
yes samsung has better service then apple (most companies do) but they just a shitty knock off version that uses cheap parts, they stole their design of apple, apple sued they won the case but the freeaking judge didn’t give them enough money in my opinion. and if you want to prove my wrong let me just say cheap battery = galaxys7 i’m totally for samsung amazing service but thier products suck.
Naveen C. I spent roughly 3 days researching a 3 in 1 machine for school and finally went with one (a Lenovo) that is really great quality and is still working great after about 4 years, it was even a refurbished model. But yes, I had automatically crossed off Apple from the list. Great machines are out there and available! My Lenovo is basically the same as the macbook, Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro.
Sam A sure that might happen, but so should they sue hackintosh builders for using mac os on a non-mac system which is against the terms of use, but nothing like that happened (yet) or it's really well hidden from public... not to get confused, i strongly disagree with current Apple's mindset
Mhel Mabayo I expected them to sound a little less circlejerky? What happened to the good old days when a media corp or a website "pretended" to be unbiased even though you knew they were full of shit? That article reads like an angry Apple mid level manager, not even an angry PR rep.
www.theverge.com/2018/3/8/17097256/california-right-to-repair-bill-apple-microsoft-service-replace-parts In approximately 1/3rd of the U.S., yes, it is.
what apple did was not *technically* illegal. By removing the sticker, he wasn't able to get the "return pricing" of a new motherboard, rather had to purchase one outright for $5500. None of this had to do with the warranty which he stated at the beginning he knew was his fault and was willing to pay. Apple was simply using the warranty void if removed sticker as an indicator for their own returns program. P.S. I still think apple is a piece of shit company and this whole video puts them in a fantastically awful light.
Linus and crew you have really out done yourselves for this video. It's truly shocking how apple treats it's consumers and it's business partners. Looking forward to part 3!
What business partners? Apple doesn't sponsor anyone aside from a few select news sites (i.e. The Verge), celebrities/RU-vidrs (like MKBHD) or notable people like (formerly) Walt Mossberg for review purposes only. Everyone else are garbage to them. You really think Apple cares about some PC-centric CANADIAN RU-vidr named LTT talking about Apple products in a positive or negative perspective? Not only that, but from a PR perspective, Apple's Prosumer market is negligible to their brand/reputation that it affect sales.
Saad Syed sorry I meant their own employees not being able to assist consumers . Plus the apple doesn't make every component within their products, for example Samsung supplies some components for the iPhone's but Apple claims it as their own. And you know What, no one likes a keyboard worrier, so plz next time keep to yourself
i have literally seen thousands of new imacs at the City dump they have a Tip shop where you can buy stuff i bought a heap of apple imacs that were smashed but still had all the goodies inside when i tried selling the motherboards on ebay i was contacted by a Apple representative to produce a valid certification for resale of the parts.. i said i have never bought anything from APPLE they said but you have Apple imacs motherboards cpu's and ram for sale? i was like yeah i bought them at the DUMP SHOP also known as the TIP SHOP i have never bought ANYTHING from Apple so no you do not own the second hand Goods ,, my adds were removed from Ebay and my email was SPAMMED to death with junk for apple basically Apple are a bunch of low down DOGS,, i sold all the imac stuff to a mate for next to nothing later he managed to fix a imac from the wrecks of about 5 managed to get all the working parts.. but when he turned the system on it went blue screen of DEATH i have come to the conclusion : the REASON the CPU and RAM and sold as a BUNDLE with the new IMAC's is the CPU and RAM are CODED to that specific BOARD like a New model car has a KEY and code it not just the shape of the KEY you have to have the CODE as well APPLE have done everything in their power to make you throw the system out and buy a new ONE PEOPLE just throw them AWAY the RAM the CPU the MOTHER BOARD i find them all at the DUMP for NOTHING zero dollars!! Apple found out and now have stopped me and Anyone from salvaging or collecting any of the used Apple systems ,, they send out a team of assholes that collect all the Apple stuff and melt it down so no one can get spare parts i have been told that they get RECYCLED by these assholes i followed them they just throw it on a PILE and BURN IT and extract the metals the security guards at the Nameless facility were playing on Ipads out the front,,, go figure !
Open source products make more sense, sometimes generic parts are way better than originals. Never been an apple fan, but then again I am a gamer lol apple os can't handle games
I5ZQ8 recently yes. though try explaining that to a genius bar. That's the beauty of our glorious legal system, if you are big enough you can avoid being responsible
Compare this vile farce to an experience I had with Ratheon a number of years ago. We had a boat with a 3-year-old Ratheon radar, the boat was struck by lightning, the insurance paid us $2500.00 for the radar saying it was totaled (replacement was around twice that). I decided to contact Ratheon to see if it could be repaired, they said we should send it to them and they would give us an estimate and all we would have to pay was shipping. For 350.00 + shipping they fixed it to the latest standard increasing the rang from 16 to 24 miles with less wave return and such fine resolution that I saw a pod of porpoises broaching at 8 miles and picked up on a stealth patrol boat that was shadowing us. After I fire a 25mm illuminating flare behind our boat because I kept getting intermittent returns that made me nervous, the patrol boat pulled up next to us and wanted to know how I got onto them, they were annoyed that a mid-priced consumer-grade radar had seen them.
I never did, as many here, problem is that you can't convince the idiots out there not to fall into their traps, and with a minority of loyal customers with high profits per product at not so many sales as competitors they're just doing fine.
I prefer MacOS on my Hackintosh to Windows that constantly has buggy issues and built-in spyware. That said, the hardware's shit. I'm currently building a micro PC hackintosh for the go.
Apple is absolutely ridiculous. I know this is a 2018 video as I am typing this comment in 2020.... This is my story : In January 2020 my MacBook Pro 15'' 2018 model broke out of nothing. The battery ran out, plugged it in to charge, nothing happens. It did not turn on anymore. I have never dropped or even scratched this thing. Now this machine is just 1 year and 4 months old. 4 Months over the 1 year warranty that Apple gives you. I live in Europe and here you have special laws to protect the consumer. One of those laws is that there is a warranty by law for 2 years for technical products. When I bought my MacBook Pro, the apple employee has informed me about this also. The moment comes and my Macbook dies in a unreasonable time. Something costing more than 3000€ dies under 2 years.... In this moment, it was also the examination period of my uni (lol as if right now I am typing this). I had to have to it fixed quick. I NEEDED this device to WORK in this time. I carefully considered what to do. I could go to apple and potentially get it fixed for free as it was not my fault this happened. BUT to get an appointment in the apple store of Berlin it takes atleast 2 weeks. After two weeks it would go in a cycle of at least 3 weeks to get it ''fixed''. Now Apple does not fix their new MacBooks as they are so fucking complicated, they won't even do it themselves. They will get rid of everything inside and put a new MacBook inside the shell. You will lose ALL your data. They don't care about your data at all. Hell to the no was I going to do that. So I went to a third party repair shop that has a license with apple (official apple repair point). Now I am still awaiting answer from apple if they will fix it for me as I was informed that something is wrong with the logics board and they can not see what.... So the only option is to get a new logics board and all my data will be lost. I am already sure it will be hard to have it fixed by them and that I have to argue strongly with the 2 year warranty by law and how their products should not break in a little over a year blabla. Don't buy Apple if you don't need it and please back up all your stuff (especially when u use new generation apple computers). Apple service is terrible. It does not matter how much u pay. I rely on Apple for my university study and later on my future jobs. It sucks to feel like you're trapped in their system. This proves that they do not care about their costumers.... no matter how loyal u are, all u get from them is a big fuck you.
I've never understood the fanaticism towards apple. I've seen so many examples of anti consumer policies that i can't imagine why anyone would buy apple products.
AIRGEDOK I used to work at a phone store and most of the people who upgraded their apple products did it because they were trapped in the ecosystem and learning another OS and migrating your data over sounds like too much. They usually upgraded cause they were tired of their phone battery or slowness with age.
I’ve loved Apple for years, in a large part due to their great after-the-sale customer service and repair. (They did me well with several iMacs and even a G4 Cube). After watching this video, it’s clear that the Apple I knew no longer exists. (And after a recent bad repair experience with a MacBook Pro, I can believe it)
slaves don't queue outside their prospective slavery establishment for the chance to be a slave. Apple's foxconn staff do literally queue, day in and day out. outside the factory for the smallest chance that they'll get a chance to be one of the employees. Funnier, would be if you mentioned this as a potential note: "I want to quit, but there's safety nets outside now so jumping would be useless!" also bear in mind, foxconn don't only produce electronics for Apple.... Nice joke, but ineffective lol.
that is obviously false as proven in the latest video put out. dwave is the god of the computer world. apples the computers for the kids who couldnt match the shaped blocks into the shaped holes in the box.
Red1676+ l just want to say there there is a difference between iSheep and apple users. apple users are the people who just like the products. iSheep are the people with the notch haircuts and apple everything in their all white house.
Apple is the worst company I never had to deal with in 23 years. I once bought 10 000$ of computer at an apple store and they didn't want to send me a ram replacement. Had to bring the whole computer to the downtown store and since it was hard to get there I was 5 min late so I had to wait in line for hours with my huge box. I finally retuirn the whole thing and I was about to destroy the store when I left and never bought anything mac since then!
Apple hasn't been a good company since the iMac. Once they started down the road to upgradeable computers and said oh fuck that noise. Then iPods and macbooks became the focus.
I was also going to mention this. Not sure what the laws are in Canada but in the US "Warranty Void if Removed" stickers were deemed, "often a ploy to force people to use a particular company’s parts or services to fix the things they’ve bought." Apple's policies here (moreso than just the sticker requirement) seem to fly in the face of the FTC's ruling in April of this year: “Provisions that tie warranty coverage to the use of particular products or services harm both consumers who pay more for them as well as the small businesses who offer competing products and services,” said Thomas Paul, the FTC’s acting consumer protection chief. fortune.com/2018/04/11/ftc-warranty-void-stickers/ www.ftc.gov/news-events/press-releases/2018/04/ftc-staff-warns-companies-it-illegal-condition-warranty-coverage Although after typing this I think the point is probably moot anyway as this isn't really a warranty issue it's a Right to Repair issue. LMG isn't trying to get the thing fixed for free under warranty, they're trying to pay to repair accidental damage. Apple's policy is just "We won't discount the replacement process unless our sticker is there." which I guess they can do because it's no longer governed by warranty laws. If the computer blew a capacitor and LMG removed stickers to investigate I think they'd have a case (as far as claiming warranty repair despite sticker removal) but because they caused the damage I don't think the shady sticker thing is technically illegal.
Drew wait till ajit pai hears of this "making this legal will help companies keep secrecy and TOTALLY isn't anti capitalist and capable of creating monopolies easily
Ultimate collab incoming: Linus provides the parts, Louis repairs and instructs on the iMac Pro board, Jayztwocents finds a way to water cool the dang thing, Wendell installs and shows off Linux on it. It will be glorious!
I’ve made that decision a little while ago, do to a similar FU apple pulled on me. (Built into software, not repair or anything.) I’m also moving to Linux, because I never want deal with windows auto updating.
www.ftc.gov/news-events/press-releases/2018/04/ftc-staff-warns-companies-it-illegal-condition-warranty-coverage The FTC is finally enforcing the law passed back in the 70s
"Core part exchange is gonna be 5200$, its not a cost effective repair" "A safety matter for the repair crew" This is the kind of bullshit you get thrown at you when you try to enter the sphere of apple influencers and shills.
The thing about replacement parts goes down to every screw. At work we have macbooks in our educational userbase. The screws holding the backplate of them have a tendency to get loose and eventually lost. We asked our AASP if they could send us some but we were told that wasn't possible. We were facing 2 choices. Either send the Macbook in for service to get 3 new screws meaning we would have to do a complete transfer of the data over to a spare mac that the student could borrow while the other one would be sent almost 500km in order to get replacement screws put in, only to be shipped back to us (another 500km) so that we could transfer the data back. Or we simply remove the screws from the macbook the student was to borrow from us and send that one to get replacement screws instead. Obviously, we did remove the screws from the spare macbook, actually we removed a random number of screws from about 10 of them, saved the screws ourselves and send the macbooks in to get news screws.
Swift Boiz Too much common sense man, stop it!! 😂😂 You’re supposed to rant and rave and say mean things, get lots of likes and pat each other on the back (virtually of course). This is an unfortunate situation, but sometimes we bring things on ourselves. Trying to profit from it under the guise of championing the cause of the people is...eh, not worth fighting over. 🤭😉 Good to know that common sense still exists on RU-vid...
Yes, absolutely true, but who are they comparing against? Samsung refused to stand behind my screen when it got oled burn-in. LG refused to do anything about my phone when it bricked. My Polk sub just died from a known internal hardware issue, 3 years and 2 months so the fix costs as much as the sub. My Sony vaio was declared unfixable because the cpu was overheating. Who in the tech world provides real support for their products? Stands behind them when they fail, or provides repair outlet when you break it?
It’s been a long time, but old Nintendo used to really stand by their products. Like golden age Nintendo, the GameCube and N64 days. I remember when I was a kid my GameCube broke and it was easily 2 years out of warranty, we called up Nintendo and they told us to ship it out and they replaced it for free. That’s how you know a company stood by their product, they demanded quality from it, and they proved that with their actions.
you can build your own computer and then turn it into a hackintosh (a computer with macOS installed), and you won't have to worry about Apple's baffoonery
