Denna is a red hearing for the love interest. Auri is not "a sister" to Kvothe. She's there for him when he needs her. She also says the seven words to him. I think she is the real love interest, and if you read the intro, he probably get's her killed.
@@seanhaskell2248 the only reason the Engliah monarchy works that way right now is because of laws that were written when it became a constitutional monarchy. Most monarchies throughout history didn't work that way. Even in a matrilineal marriage, the man still became king, but he was subordinate to the queen.
That (Ambrose marrying Auri to become a king if she is a princess) would wrap a certain conflict brewing conflict up very neatly. Something like this could also, finally, lead to Kvothe's expulsion from the University, though breaching the door in the library could cause his expulsion as well.
I do think it's possible and maybe even probably that Auri is Princess Ariel, but I highly doubt that she could be the Tabitha that disappears. I have doubts that Auri was even a student at the university at all, at the very least not anytime recently. Mola and Auri meet in the first book following the fire in the fishery. This is important as neither Mola nor Auri seem to recognize one another, and as Mola says in the second book, the women of the university are all housed together and mostly all know one another. Knowing that Mola rose to the rank of El'the under Master Arwyl we can be certain that she's attended at least 15 terms at the university, as Arwyl is stated to strongly adhere to the tradition of three terms before being admitted into the Arcanum and six terms for both lower ranks. On top of this, when Mola is raised to El'the Kvothe congratulates her by saying "everyone knows you've deserved it for a long time," implying that she's likely spent longer than average waiting to be promoted. It could just be me, but Rothfuss is very purposeful with the information he gives out, meaning that either this was not considered or is trying to lay the groundwork for the realization that Auri is much older than she seems. Anyhow, that's just my little pet theory an Auri.
When Auri is bit by a skunk in The Slow Regard of Silent Things she mentions it had been a "mortal age" since anyone had been so rude to her. She also "wrinkled her nose at the knifelike smell" of a pipe, suggesting that she (like Felurian) dislikes the smell of iron. With that info it's pretty obvious that Auri is from the Fae. As such she actually could've been a student, but perhaps long before any of the present day students were.
The way she comforts him and how she is the only person he truly opens up to about his past I believe Ari is his real love. I know she is a bad ass who talks of protecting him often so it wouldn’t be a surprise that she sacrifices herself to save him. The reason why there is no talks of a princess being lost could be partly because royalty tries to keep everything hush hush and/or she might not be lost. The king might know where she is. The way Elodin has tried for years to talk with her or leave her items. He might be working with or for the king? Or huge twist- he might actually be the king!? I just feel like there is so much more to that man’s story and the way he does things seems like a man who is bored from having and knowing almost everything. He can speak the hand language, he knew of Ari. Thin random theory: I think the guy in Haven might have been the previous naming master that Elodin replaced and took that man’s name and that is why he freaked out about kvothe asking about name changing. I feel like that time spent at haven was too many pages not to mean something more down the road. Elodin knows more about Kvothe than anyone and the way he interacts with him is more than just for names. I think he knows of his true power and heritage. I wouldn’t be surprised if Elodin was the one that was in the sky that scared the chanderion away. Or if Elodin ends up being Kvothe’s real father. There is just so much more there it feels like.
I was a little sceptical of this one at first, but then I remembered how the building where she is found in campus is described. Having stairways that led nowhere and an inaccessible courtyard. This parallels the story about the man hastily unfolding the house. Also saying that there were stairs that went nowhere and dead ends.

I can’t explain princess Ariel but I think maybe Auri could part of the moon. The first thing I think might support such is the fact she approaches Kvothe for his music just as the moon approaches Jax for the flute. Another reason I think may support Auri may be the moon is Kvothe calls her his moon fae…how often has Kvothe named someone or something that was proved true. As to why she seems cracked; part of her was taken by Jax. Also, speaking of Jax, what if his house is the Underthing? Could it be she’s never left?

I think it’s entirely possible that she’s a Fae princess, I think Kvothe will have to open the 4 square door in the archives in order to go rescue her. I don’t think professor Elodin would have been as confounded by her and Kvothes friendship if she was a normal human. She also seems to be a “Knower,” not a “Shaper.” The way she’s always saying that “that is not the way of things,” and refusing to change anything. If that’s the case, she’s as old as the Creation War itself possibly, which has enormous implications. The Chandrian can’t be the only 7 immortals out there right?
Great point! Yeah I'm a bit confused on whether she is a Knower or a Shaper, as all her OCD-like actions point to being a Knower. But then when she makes the candle for Kvothe it seems to be more of a Shaper power. Hmmm unless Knowers & Shapers are just Namers that have a choice, and she chose to break the rules by making the candle. I'm just not sure. But yeah I think there's definitely a possibility she could be as old as the Creation War! :) Which could make it possible for her to be a representation of the Moon that Iax pulled into the fae.

I’m on my third re-read and I’m convinced that Iax/Jax/Encanis built the University using his Folding House, invited the best namers to teach him, and upon gaining mastery started the Creation War by calling down the Moon. Splitting her from her name in order to "shape" her a body, he’d essentially kidnapped and bound a "Princess" of the Faen court - like Hades did with Persephone. My bet, then, is that Iax’s punishment was to have his name split, sealed within the Lackless box by Tehlu/Teccam to make him corporeal, and be hunted by Selitos/Savien/Skarpi for all eternity.

You mention that PR plays with real languages. By this logic, Auri can be related to the Finnish word aurinko that means sun. She is a sun/moon combined in a way. A hidden sun maybe, like in many myths.
So I'm thinking about the "I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings" I think your reading of Barrow as referring to the university is correct, but I also think Barrow could be in reference to a male pig castrated before maturing. Mainly Ambrose Jakis. So lets say Auri = Tabetha = Princess Ariel, and she is forced to marry Ambrose Jakis, making him king. Kvothe isn't able to rescue her, so he strike Ambrose down instead, before he is able to act as the king/consummate the wedding. That would make him, in some sense, a male pig castrated before maturity. (Sure its a stretch, we have to swap castrated with killed, and maturity with kingship, but I enjoy the double word play) The other thing about this line, is that it is "princesses" in the plural. Now that could just mean both Denna and Auri? But I feel like Denna should be more of an active participant than a rescued princess. Maybe she and Kvothe try to rescue Auri from Ambrose, and they get caught, which leads to the Kingkilling?

Captured in Words Man there this one thing about auri that I find very interesting. Do you remember the Jax luck less storie? That jack gave the moon a house, play to her and then stole her name? The house that he gave was all crooked and its description resembles the underneath! This plus the fact that Kvothe is a Lackless, so a descendent of Jax, and that he plays to her, could means that she really is the moon!

Perhaps, Auri is both Ariel and Lyra in some way. Record their names together and play backwards (esp. if you pronounce it ah-REE-lllll), seems to work well enough for a shot in the dark, considering the Fae realm is a dream-like reflection of the normal world. She lives in a sort of dream state while not sleeping, which hearkens to the rhymes about Lackless, as do her gifts to Kvothe (not to mention the parallels with those and Taborlin the Great's tokens). I like this idea that she and Denna are connected.
Auri is not a shaper. The passage from Slow Regard that you mention is the only time she ever does anything like that. In the entire rest of the book she talks about how dangerous and unwise it is to force your will on the world. She is constantly talking about "the proper way of things." This could be in reference to her noble blood, but I think it's more likely she is a modern knower.
Hmmm yeah I was a bit confused on whether she was a Shaper or a Knower, but you're right I think it's more evident that she's a Knower. However, I think she may have broken the rules a bit by bending the universe to her will and making the candle for Kvothe, but perhaps it was just for that one time.

Riki, you're exactly right. The door from her sleeping chamber that was "not for her" she easily passes through (into a lab that had clearly been her own at some point in time) because she is doing a shaping/making for someone else, not for her own benefit. I suspect that she had been a student of great power who inadvisable tried to turn her skill to her own will. She ended up getting assaulted (breath with wine on it; a wrist pinned to the floor) and, traumatized, could only find refuge in making herself small.

Interesting thought on the girls being the light and dark sides of the moon! It made me wonder if Kvothe ever saw both of them in one day? Maybe when Denna disappears he spends time with Auri and vice versa? Or, maybe I'm just howling at the moon.

As it relates to Dulator, one thing I remembered was one of Kvothe’s interactions with Denna. I don’t remember all the specifics, but they were flirting and she says to him, “steal me.” Just a thought.
Also, he only gets excepted into Elodin's class after he names her which means sunny. She wasn't scared of the fire that came down the grates so I think that might have something to do with the fact that she knows the name fire since she mentions that it can't catch her.
Elodin must know her real name, and was impressed by Kvothe's naming skills being so accurate when he named her. Also I never thought about the fire that went into the grates! Good point, that could be a hint that she knows the name of fire. I think Auri is much more powerful then we know.
My hypothesis. Ambrose was Auri abuser, and somehow he gets to be the king(after all they keep harping about how in line he is). Ambrose is also Khove tormentor. Somehow way in the future they confront each other where our hero finds out that the SOB in front of him is also Auri abuser, K looses his control and some how kills Ambrose.. there that's it Kingkiller.
I like this theory because it ties in with kvothe having traits of a master namer. By just looking at a thing he can name it (sort of), with the name he gives Auri being close to the potential truth - another example being when he names his horse aptly despite the botched translation. Consciously he was mistaken, but perhaps because his subconscious knew the truth of things
I always just assumed she's fae and maybe went through some trauma and forgot her past... But then, wouldn't there be some physical signs? Also, long video?! It's not even an hour long... xD
I love the theory that she could be fae! As far as her physical traits, there's fae magic like glammourie that is able to mask their appearance from mortal eyes, we see Bast do this. Maybe Auri is so powerful at this that it fools even Kvothe? Haha yeah I suppose it didn't end up being too long, though I never know how long of videos people want to see from me XD I could of made this much longer and talked about all the theories around Auri's identity :P I'll for sure make another video on Auri theories again! Auri an angel ? Interesting,.. she Is one of my favorite characters though I was disappointed in slow regards that PR made her somewhat fixated on kvothe , Auri is an observer of the moon the critters and all things no one notices. Her preoccupation with kvothe when he's coming next,.. etc really bothered me , I wish we could've learned more about her in slow regards if silent things , anyway good job and keep them coming!
I think her preoccupation with Kvothe is quite understandable given the song she is so looking forward to. On a separate note: I believe "Auri" meant "sunny" or something, so the references to the moon might be there but in kind of a opposite way
This is speculation, but under the assumption that Auri is not of the mortal realm, she could be the gate-keeper of the 4 plate door. Seeing as she has easy hidden access to the archives, Elodin who is a mysterious character in himself shows her great respect, she could be old enough to know the customs of the Belany in this case; hence her offense at the single fruit. She is very secretive, refuses to answer questions, which although is a sign of past trauma could also be because she was sworn into secrecy about the room and anything to do with it, if your guess about information on the chandrien and amyr being behind this door is correct it would also explain how she would be able to access the book which kvothe is looking for assuming all information left in the world is trapped in that one location. As to which fae Auri is, my top guess is the most magical of all. The moon. Kvothe made a big deal about telling the story about the stollen moon, auri is often referred to as a moon fae which may make this seem too der-da-der to be true and honestly I don't know how much evidence I could find for this but I stand by this prediction, because in the story the moon comes down because of a lover and then gets trapped, she would be the reason the worlds are crossing between each other, the reason the chandrien were able to come about. So it makes sense that she would be the one protecting the secret to their destruction.
Something to note on the princess Ariel being of the fae theory is that Ariel is the name of a fairy/spirit in the Tempest although that character is often perceived to be male. Ariel is bound to serve the magician Prospero as thanks for being rescued from imprisonment in a tree. In the face of that however I feel that Auri is unlikely to be fae. It seems to make a lot more sense that she is a human and a former student at the University. I do think the theory that she is a princess holds some water though.

As Rothfuss is brilliant and well read, there is no way he doesn't know about the medieval Seven Heavens. Arie is just the most obvious one - Luna(considered a planet in preCopernican astronomy) was a woman who ruled the night, but her domain was frequently related confusion and lunacy. She represented the boundaries between absolutes and things that change. And (as the Greek and Roman variations show) supported hunters and wanderers. All of that aside when Luna is influencing things the world is watery which in my mind comes out in the Underthing. each of them had metals- Luna's is silver while Sol's is gold which is tripping me up with the names. but it would be so much fun to line everything up with the Kingkiller Chronicles. Venus's metal is copper (and she has as much to do with brutality as sensuality) and Mars's is iron.... how the mind wanders.

It's unlikely Auri will have much to do directly with plot, as in it's unlikely she has any sort of secret identity, she probably will give kvothe some valuable knowledge or insight though. This is because of the way she was written into the story. During the editing process of the first book, Auri was a very late addition that he just kind of added in. There's lots of discussion about this in interviews, streams and blogs. Also Denna is the love interest, this is without doubt, kvothe and Auri are much more like big brother little sister. A lover is someone who you have a physical relationship with, so Auri did not call him dulator.
That doesn't mean too too much I don't think. Rothfuss has himself all out of sorts trying to finish this series so maybe Auri is a bigger player now than originally intended and it complicated things. I think he wrote himself into more than one corner and that is why he is struggling so much and frustrated about book 3. I mean have you seen him, hes downright mean and rude to his fans who ask about the next book.

Good theories about Auri. As to the four-plate door, I believe that only a namer ... possibly the wind is enough ... that can feel and understand the locking mechanism will be able to open the door. As there are books deemed too dangerous secreted in different spots, this has to be the repository for the most dangerous! Curious if some or all of the Masters are Amir? What's most curious is why Kvothe has evidently lost the ability to do sympathy or work with names? It true for all arcanists, that would make sigaldry fail too. Essentially, what the University makes most of their money selling would suddenly become useless. And, at some point, Kvothe must deal with Cinder in Imre calling lightning that has turned so much of the soil to obsidian that it literally can't be repaired.
a couple years late, but the audiobook pronounces princess ariel as (aw-ri-el). very similar to auri (aw-ri). i think its very likely given the pronunciation along with Elodins reaction to the name kvothe gave her

auri may has been abused, she may be connected to the moon, so maybe she was chased by a boy who captured her name (thinking of the story told by one of alverons mercenaries) Right, that boy was haliax himself, just read that in an older commentary. Tasty point I guess
That story at the beginning about the guy locked in a tower with just a key, coin and a candle or flame or something like that? Doesn't she give him a key? Now she's making him a candle?
I think Auri is one of the original Shapers from the creation war. I think she can see Kvothe and knows his future said after he kills the angel… Possibly Denna and he will be broken and she will have to help him.
"No rumors of missing princesses" Well, think about it like this. Just like with the Maer, who didn't want the knowledge of him being poisoned to get out. So too, would rumors of missing princesses and potential heirs be safeguarded as well. Cause in both instances, it makes your family look more vulnerable, and no one with royal blood would welcome that notion willingly. Kvothe might gain the trust of someone close to Ariel, and they will divulge she is missing. And why it isn't common knowledge
@capturedinwords Please make more videos on Auri theories… grammary is described by Felurian as “The art of making things be”. From the amount of words Rothfuss has spent on the importance of seeing and understanding a thing in terms of naming, perhaps grammary is an even deeper expression of naming, aka Shaper magic. I think Auri is actually Fae who knows grammary and witnessed the horrors of the creation wars. Several times in TSROST she mentions how long things have been, that she’s been in the Underthing for a very long time, that her little friend (can’t remember his name) has been with her “forever”. She obviously knows more about the Amyr than any mortal we’ve come across. Again, the “moon fae” comment. And she’s totally obsessed with the moon, how full or dark she is. She may be afraid of being pulled into Fae or being followed, she may have helped Iax steal her and feels guilty. TSROST mentions a grey stone in one of the places. Perhaps there’s a doorway into Fae there and she’s actually slipping Between the two?? Also when she found the farm, she took the bread that’s part of the bread & milk left out by farmer’s wives for the Fae, and acts very suspiciously fairy like when seen by a little girl, including laughing “high and wildly” which is also used elsewhere to describe Faen laughs.

When Auri talks about the key that that will unlock the moon if there is a door there, could she have been referring to the story of the boy who trapped the moon and started the Creation War?
Knowing Patrick's way of cripting it wouldn't be the first time he make a reference or took inspo from ancient cultures. to me, Auri is some sort of a sun archetype representation rather than a moon. on the other side, Dena is more of a moon archetype. Here is what I think - from Latin Auris name means gold which I think is again a sun archetype symbol, but the aura is also a significant relation- it adds magic and hidden knowledge to her as we witness her doing in the slow regard, her physical description is pale and light, and the possibility of her being royal, her introversion and trauma response may be like a cover-up from her possible royal personality. also, Denna multiple times chances her name, and one of her variations was Diana which could be a reference to the roman name of Arthemis, patron of the moon .other interesting thing is that Hecate is also a Greek equivalent of Diana and imo Dena is more related to her as a character. Dena is mystical and mysterious and shows up randomly n pretty significant locations and situations -like the phases of the moon, her physical description is dark and pretty, and she hides many things from Kvothe, her fight skills - have a dark side, and the whole vibe from her is really questionable. Auri is afraid of the moon for some reason and the idea of calling her moon fae maybe is put there to hint at something else.
Kvothe's first love and likely the one that labeled him the little rogue would be his mother. . . as she refers to his father also as a rogue, who stole a princess of the Lockless clan.
Re: “Dulator” lātor is the Latin noun meaning “one who proposes or carries. Also one who proposes laws”. This is the root word for: Latore - modern Italian noun meaning “bearer or one who carries” It is also the root for our modern noun legislator- which is someone who proposes laws. Du in many Romance languages is simply a word that means “the”. If using Latin as the base, “Dulator” could mean “The Bearer” “one who bears” “one who carries” or “one who proposes laws”. This could add another clue to who his “first real lover” is. Keeping in mind he said she called him this because she liked the way it sounded, the woman in question may not have known the meaning of the name intellectually. But may have selected the correct name because she naturally possesses the gift of naming. P. S. Please pardon the necro comment 💀 🧟♀️
Does anyone else think there is a chandrian in the university? There is a scene where she leaves the underthing and looks up at haven and sees a chilling blue light. I’ve tried looking for mention of it on forums but couldn’t find any. Possibly Exal dal could be a chandrian? He knows the name of fire and it says that they are good at hiding their signs.
Behind the four-plate door? I think there is at least a history between the Chandrian and the University/underthing. I just finished rereading NOTW and there are 2-3 mentions of rust and rotted wood in the underthing. One of these are when he opens a door to get to the last passageway between the underthing and the archives. So, this would be about as close as you can get to the four-plate door from within the Underthing.
The idea that Auri is a fey in hiding occurred to me when she mentioned the area in the Underthing that she steadfastly avoids. Maybe it’s a gateway that she’s afraid will reveal her?
