Auri comforting Kvothe in the aftermath of the plumb bomb attack is definitely one of the most touching interactions in the entire trilogy. While I'm curious about her background, I almost feel as though any revelation of her past would permanently damage her relationship with Kvothe, which would be sad. Anyhow, great analysis man, discovered you channel just a few days ago, watched all of your KKC videos and am now eagerly awaiting new content. Keep it up!

If Auri is Princess Ariel, and Tabatha, contracted to marry Ambrose... and if the royal prince has been killed... Auri marrying Ambrose might make him king, right? If he found out about her and decided to force the issue, it could lead to motivation for Kvothe to kill a king.

My thoughts on this are similar. Pat said in an interview that one of the places Kvothe will visit next book is Renere, the capital of Vintas. I think Kvothe will return Auri to her family. However, I think King Roderic will still compel her to marry Ambrose against her will. This results in Kvothe killing both the King and then Ambrose in Imre (by the fountain where the cobblestones are said to be shattered).

The slow regard of silent things was fantastic, really opened up a curtain for me. Auri's shaping up to be one of the most fascinating mysteries to be revealed in the Doors of stone, alongside the loeclos box and the door in the archives.

I like this theory about Auri possibly being an angel, but I think there is a higher chance of her being the lost princess Ariel (especially because of that parallel between Elle and Krin, when you connect their names it gives you Auri+Elle=Aurielle-Ariel)

I think Auri is the personification of the moon. 🌙 I think there are characters (like Puppet) who are only discovered by students at the university who are looking to wake their sleeping mind. I feel like the story of Jax and the Moon plays into it... Jax is probably the Barrow King... maybe locking up Auri which explains her absence (she does give Kvothe a key to the moon). Eloden seems surprised that Kvothe can see and talk to Auri... Eloden went to the rooftop to try to find the name of the moon and instead gets an introduction to her by Kvothe. Just a theory!

Good theory, but if I remember correctly, the moon in the stories was quite bold and seductive whereas Auri is quite opposite of that. Maybe the story had some changes in their personalities to make it sound better but I think Auri is related to royalty since the name itself means Gold.

I love your theories! How lucky are we that Patrick Rothfuss has written a book with such depth and beauty that we can hypothesise about his characters! I'm hoping that Kvothe hasn't actually killed the King. He blames himself for so much when all he tries to do is the right thing. For example he blames himself for burning down the town of Trebon when it was the draccus, and he prevented the draccus from destroying it altogether. My only problem is I can't find a book to equal this. I find all other books now so formulaic and thin :(

He didnt kill a king. Denna killed that king and kvothe got the blame. Hence the betrayal. Reasoning: denna is a succubus and kvothes greatest weakness.

@@AV-the-machinist What makes you think that? He may be slow in getting the third book out, but he is everything but mediocre. By the way, was Tolkien mediocre? Remember that it took Tolkien nearly 50 years to finish The Fellowship of the Ring.

@@eodico I can't stand Denna, so basically any theory that is anti-Denna, I support. Kvothe is so blinded by his infatuation with her that he can't see that he's being played. I judge her hard and I have no shame about it.

By the time of the frame story, Auri is probably dead. Kvothe wouldn't expose her in his story if she was alive.

This is actually something that absolutely terrifies me. He always speaks about everyone at the university in past tense. I mean he is telling a story but things like "poor honest Sim. He could never bring himself to say bad things about a person, only imply them" make me nervous. "she was, he was" and all that make me wonder about where these people could be and if they are alive.

He mentioned that "the important people know the difference" in "the price of remembering" in the first book. I'm so hoping that means that some of these people (if not all) have survived. I don't have high hopes but...

But the way he narrates the first time Fela noticed Sim (when he made up a poem about Fela finding the book) and fell in love with him made me remember the way he talked about his parents which mades me think that at least Fela and Sim are dead. Denna too. Will and Mola are probably alive I think and Devi could be alive too.

I'm pretty sure that Auri is Princess Ariel. I think they sent her to school because of her naming abilities. I'm also thinking that Ambrose is probably the person that assaulted her, resulting in him thinking he killed her when she refused, forcing him (and probably his friends and possibly some teachers) to enact a cover up. Her family probably has some reason for not investigating (perhaps she was disliked due to her naming abilities?) so they aren't trying too hard to find her. She'll be accidentally revealed in the next book, forced to marry Ambrose, and that's where Kvothe will kill Ambrose and possibly her father.

Auri appears like a nicer version of the Cthaeh. She knows the true nature of the world. She rules over her little empire - the underthing - and knows the correct sports for each and every object. But I think it goes even deeper: she has oracle-like capabilities. She knows exactly when Kvothe will arrive. This is one of the most remarkable displays of power in the entire saga. With these kind of capabilities she might not only know a somewhat arbitrary 'right' spot for an object, but the exact spot an object has to be at for a 'positive' outcome (at least in her eyes). This is exactly what the Cthaeh does ...

It's been years since I first read TNOW, and suddenly I read TSROST. Sometimes I find Auri crazy, but then she'd do something and I'd think: OK maybe she's just too magical. But when I try to cling to the idea, she'd act as if she just has some sort of mental illness. She's mysterious and broken. The problem is, I can't decide when she's being mysterious and when she's simply being broken.

@@Arrjaayyy My dude use your imagination, the writing is a symbolic representation of a character. The authors descriptions of their behavior, their way of thinking, and their way seeing the world meet with the readers human ability to understand that another being is more than just how it appears. All converging upon a complex character that is not entirely reducible to how it appears in the world, i.e. some patterned marks on a page.

I don't really remember if a name is mentioned but Simm mentioned a girl that "just disappeared" one of the (many) times they were talking about Ambrose... I love Auri as a character, but for some reason I feel all angel or princess are red herrings and she is just that damaged girl that "just disappeared". I hope that their is more to her than that. Given the stresses of the university, something like a rape and feeling that her life is over would understandably just break someone and she could just disappear into the underthing. Also... I don't know if anyone has discussed the coincidence of Ambrose being away from university when the bandits are stealing taxes... 1 gets away... And I felt like Ambrose has sort of changed after the break. I think he is that one, His family consorts with the poisoner of Alveron... I think they are trying for a coup to take the thrown... and Ambrose will somehow take the throne, and be almost immediately killed...

I suspect Ambrose is involved in the king killing and framed Kvothe. He is the penitent king who wants to hunt down and kill Kvoth. Kvoth was somehow the fly in the wine and got away, perhaps with one of his friends coming to harm. He may have done something impulsive in the process, like open something better left closed - and locked.

There is just more and more I find out about this series during re-reads. I think I'm on my 11th re-read. Why is Kvothe even telling this story to begin with? Why does everyone that Kvothe speak to become influenced by him?

If something bad happens to Auri I will be very very sad. Also I will be very very angry with Rothfuss. Oh well, he can write the story as he wants, my sadness and anger will be my own. It is his story so I do not really have a right to change it. Actually for a story perspective it would be a powerful act to kill her off.... So don't do it please! :-)

I think she is probably Ariel or was Ariel at least. Now she is Auri though. I suspect she willed Kvothe into Coat to hide him from the consequences of him killing Ambrose. I wonder if he got his Gilder before this happened. I also think she hid what she removed from him in the chest so that he could reclaim himself by the end. Has Mr. Rothfuss stated there will be more then the 3 books that consist of the 3 days that Chronicler is there?

Could Auri be Lyra ? I know it is said she is dead, kind of a stretch I know but Auri lives in the Underthing which is the ruins of Belen. Could this be a apparition of Lyra that is cast away ?

I do so much enjoy these books. Found them in Audiobooks in my RU-vid, while trying to find something I can listen to while I work. I've heard the first half of the first book. Then I can't find where to go to hear the rest of the "Tale" Coat is telling Chronicler. I'm very frustrated by now concerning this. Please help me find the next chapters to get the rest the whole story. Thanks

I am often drawn to thinking of Auri as the moon. She is seen at night, often the moon is spoken of in her presence, and she is Kvothes Moon fae.

Any thoughts on Kvothe telling Aaron(not to join the kings army) that the stories of him will never be told again. Maybe he plans on killing chronicler...just a thought I had I believe it's from wise man fears not sure the chapter.

Yeah. But what if "seeing" an angel implies that angels rarely let themselves be seen, rather than that they are invisible or something. Also Kvothe, Elodin and Mola are very powerful.

It should be said, she could be both the princess and angel. And through re-telling the story got mixed up and turned into two separate beings (an angel and a princess) as is the case in many stories told about Kvothe and others in the books.

I am surprised at the pronouncing of Kvothe. Can someone help me know which is correct? I was of the understanding that it’s pronounced Quothe.

Pat has a video with the correct pronunciation of all the different names. Kvothe rhymes with quothe, but you still pronounce the v. "K-voh-th"

Rothfuss has gone on record saying he doesn't care how you pronounce things in his books. It's literally in the anniversary edition of The Name of the Wind (not sure if it's in the standard edition)

Really good video. I hope she is just the princess and not an angel. I don't really like Auri so the less important she is the better. Slow Regard of Silent Things wasnt my cup of tea. I don't really understand why people like her so much. I know Denna has her flaws but she's just way more interesting than Auri and I think she has closer ties to the Chandrian. I know it's the King Killer Chronicle so the king Kvothe kills should be important to me and therefore if Auri gets him closer to the king then maybe she should be important to me but I attribute it to Rothfuss trying to throw us off.
