Backstitch is a new platform for sewists to organize fabric + patterns, plan + track sewing projects, discover new sewing patterns and share experiences + process in an online community. I just learned about it this week and wanted to tell you all about it, as I signed up to be part of the Beta.
This could be a total game changer for the sewing world, as Backstitch features many of the best elements of other social media platforms, but all in one place. I definitely see this being an incredibly valuable resource for sewists of all skill levels and backgrounds.
While most of the Backstitch features are free, there is an upgraded version for $5 / month with advanced features.
You can now find me on Backstitch!

I have been beta testing for quite a few months now and I LOVE IT! What you don’t see in the video is how cool it is once you’ve added lots of patterns and fabrics, that is when the fun begins! I don’t stress too much about the “proper names” of fabrics, I just call things by what I would recognise them as. The real power in this app is the filters and search tools! I can search over 13000 patterns loaded by other users to find all the dresses with “dramatic sleeves” or “A line skirts” or “maternity” etc. etc. I can search all the pants patterns to find the ones that are suitable for a drill cotton fabric, and I can search my fabric stash for e.g. the stretch fabrics or the lightweight silks if that’s what the pattern I’m looking at requires. I can make my own tags to make it easier to filter my own stashes in ways that are meaningful to me (eg. I tag my patterns if I haven’t printed them out yet). I can search for patterns that support projector files, bigger cup sizes, or filters to find something that is available in my measurements. I can add measurements for other people I sew for too, and can update them as they grow. I can make project plans and mix and match patterns from my stash with fabrics that I have, I can make a blog journal of the process and share that with others. I can follow along with other people’s projects and celebrate them when they are done. I can ask people for advice and give them compliments. I am so blown away by how rapidly Guro & Endre have built this platform up from when I started using it, and it was already pretty good back in the early days. Welcome to the club! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do 🥰

Ravelry for seeing. I love Ravelry for organizing yarn and projects and keeping project notes and participating in several communities. Sewing really needs it! I will be looking at this for my sewing. Thank you!

Hey, Jen! Thank you for showing this app. I signed up to beta test. I’ve used Ravelry and tried to use apps for sewing but haven’t enjoyed them and totally jumped in. I do plan on putting all my fabric in and using it to track *hopefully* a successful stash down in 2024. As you know, I’m not opposed to buying a little here & there, I just want there to be less in my stash on New Year’s Eve. 😊. So far this year… I need to do some sewing and catch up. Lol

So this sounds good but I’ve been burned before. I’ve entered all my patterns and fabric in two different dedicated apps only to have them go defunct. I decided to use Airtable figuring that a professional program would be maintained and not go belly up in just a year or two. I’ve got all my patterns re photographed and reentered. Still working on the fabric. But since I have over 1400 yards of fabric I don’t want to do it again. Maybe I can export my files from Airtable. Which I could not do from the defunct apps since they lost functionality. I hope this works because I like the idea but it might be a while before I switch over entirely.

I too would rather use my desktop pc for things as the screen is way bigger than my Ipad or phone. 🌸🐨🌸

I just spent alot of time last month making a few Excel sheets for my patterns I was making each month and a second one that tracks all my materials (everything got an inventory number, and I can add new things and use things semi automatically). I will have to check this out to see if I want to move everything over. Since it might be better for tracking patterns.

Do you know anyways i could only have regular sewing machine but mimicking cover stitch or overlock…? Like using zigzag stitch or something..? I know they are all each has its own use but I can’t afford to buy all those three machines 😢

Is there a good app to track your quilting supplies, like,e patterns, books, rulers, threads, etc.?
@SparkyOne549

It will start off as free, but I worry that it will eventually require a monthly subscription. Also once it gets really popular it would be sold to a company that will eventually ruin it.

I agree about the monthly fee. There is already one at $5. Have to see what the advanced features are and if that is needed for the average person. I could see maybe a one time fee. But as well while $5 USD isnt a whole lot of money to spend on an app. I could already see it increasing it in the long run.

@@MichelleNaomiConner, I joined the Beta a couple of weeks ago. Honestly, at this time the additional features you get for paying are not “must haves” for the average sewing. I signed up for a yearly subscription more from a crowdsourcing perspective.
