I've been working in a career that I hate for about 4 years, and it took me a while to even find PT as an option. Initially I did discount it for financial reasons, but I circled back around to it because I know how much happier I'll be in that field. I watch your videos to remind myself why I'm making this change because, like you said, it is horrible to hate a full time job when that's so much of your life.
@drjustinleedpt

Allison YOU LIVED IT ALLISON!!! This is exactly what I was taking about. I’m sure you made some decent money working that job, but to hate going to work every single day for 40 hours a week?! It’s just not worth it. So happy you chose PT! I’m here to support you in any way!!! Let’s make change happen

Yes this is probably one of the scariest things to think about. Debt is inevitable in PT school, and so much time and effort goes into school but like you said if you have passion to serve and love what you are doing then it will be worth it at the end! You will eventually pay off your debt if you are smart about it.
@drjustinleedpt
@drjustinleedpt 3 года назад
It is super scary! But to me I would much rather take a little longer to pay off student loans and love what I do every single day rather than have less loans and hate going to work. And that is exactly why I moved to Hawaii as well! The cost of living is Pretty high and I knew that I would not financially get that ahead, but moving here has been one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life
@Yoshieatsrice

The main reason I want to go into physical therapy is because I'm so passionate about the knowledge. I know it's what I want to do. My fear is getting stuck in a mill job and be poor AND hate my job. But seeing all the DPTs going into their own business and not only making much more money but also getting practice the the methods they want to. My only hope is that I can do the same. It's pretty scary sometimes
@drjustinleedpt
@drjustinleedpt 3 года назад
Texasyojimbo that’s a legit fear and I think a lot of PTs think that way too. I would say the first way to avoid that would be to make sure you don’t even settle for a clinic that’s a mill. Once you lower your standards that way, you’ll never leave. Second, I would say that if you let fear stop you from achieving what you want, you’ll never know what you could have gotten because you never tried. My motto... just try it!!

I went to school in the bay area, cost me 260K even after getting 50k in grants. At 43 and as a single person I'm COMPLETELY SCR*WED and will have to move back home to live with my parents, WITH A DOCTORATE. I love my job and the knowledge I have and the difference I'm making, but I'm furious about this debt and the fact that the APTA advocated hard for DPTS but is not advocating for raising the salaries.

I totally agree with you. The salary we make vs the tuition is unreal. It absolutely is frustrating that we have to accommodate a lot of our lives to save money, only to put it toward our loans... ugh! You would think a doctorate would prevent that path towards us. DPT here TBH I would NOT suggest to PT school unless mom and dad will pay,you're planning to open your own business, or go to the military. Many of my classmates have 190k+ loans and are making 70k minus taxes, health and dental insurance. Many are coming home with about 4k net a month and some even lower. You still have rent, loans, phone, car insurance/payment, food etc... I would suggest med school then either sports medicine or PM&R which can essentially the same thing if you tailer your practice as such. The theory of PT is GREAT but actually doing the treatments (transfers, stretching, mobilizations, soft tissue mobilizations) daily gets boring and breaks your own body down. Living below your means sounds great when Dave Ramsey says it, but after 7 years of school, being in your mid to late 20's you're gonna want to progress (marriage, children, move out of mommy and daddy's house etc). Don't depend on student loan forgiveness as that is very rare.
@drjustinleedpt
@drjustinleedpt 3 года назад
ShogunG you’re absolutely right about this. I believe in a financial perspective, it is ABSOLUTELY NOT WORTH IT. but trading money for pursuing what you love and envision doing for the rest of your life is invaluable. Like I mentioned in the video, I would much rather do something I love and make less than make more and hate what I’m doing. But you’re right, it’s a poor financial decision and that’s why I believe that PT’s have to find additional ways of income to stay on track and get out of debt on the soonest way possible. Which is why I have this RU-vid page and other streams of income which passively accumulates, while working for a full time pay check. But then again.. maybe things will change once I start working for longer? How long have you been working for? Did you pay off your loans?

I also have a big passion in fitness and I knew that if I wanted to elevate my learning and take my personal training to the next level, I had to figure out more about the human body and know exactly what I was doing. Injury was also very common not only in life but when it came to personal training, so I wanted to learn how to rehab clients myself. I learned that the physical therapy profession did a really good job at building relationships and helping people in a very vulnerable place, which I found very empowering. @drjustinleedpt
@drjustinleedpt 3 года назад
Brian Ninh I made a video on this, you should definitely check this video out and hear what I had to say! But as far as to answer your question, I think both majors are valid, especially if you are trying to start your own business because having a business degree will teach you the fundamentals of everything you need to know to get started on that. I live out a entrepreneurial lifestyle, so there are definitely things that I had to learn from scratch that no one taught me. However having a kinesiology degree has really educated me on the fundamentals of human movement and it really set me up for success to understand at a deeper level in physical therapy school

@drjustinleedpt 3 года назад
Madeleine Estrella this is true and something you should really consider before going down the path of physical therapy. A lot of people have considered the difficulty of getting excepted into DPT school and the financial stability when it comes to student debt and physical therapy salary. But for those who decide to embark on this journey, do it because they are passionate about serving the community and all about human movement. We can’t win it all, but like I mentioned in the video, I would much rather love what I do and have a great quality of life with less money, than make more money and hate my life. I encourage you to take time to really think about this. If finances/time/difficulty is an issue for you, consider PTA? Still a great route. Hi, so I just graduated from high school and I’m about to go to community college and from there, transfer to a 4 year uni. I went this route cause I knew how expensive DPT school is (or any other grad school in case I don’t wanna be a PT anymore). Do you think I made the right decision? Do you think that this can help me avoid student debt in the future?
@drjustinleedpt
@drjustinleedpt 2 года назад
I absolutely think you made the right decision! If I had to go back in time, I would have done exactly what you are doing. I would have gone to a community college and then transfer to a four-year university with a kinesiology or exercise science major.
@farinazo6285
@farinazo6285 2 года назад
liftforchange ok, thanks so much. Your channel has been super helpful! Also, I’m currently a biology major, but I’m thinking about changing it to kinesiology. I’m not really sure tho cause what if later I don’t wanna be a PT. Do you thinking majoring in bio can help with PT school (and I know how you can major in anything and apply)?
@drjustinleedpt
@drjustinleedpt 2 года назад
@@farinazo6285 nice! Bio major is good, but I would prefer students to be kinesiology majors if possible. This is because you’ll actually learn practical skills that will directly influence how you approach PT once you start grad school. However, if you’re looking for a major that will help you graduate faster with taking little extra prerequisite classes, bio is good too. I just told like it because you literally do not use any of your bio knowledge in PT. I made a video on the best major for PT school here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-i_ImLMjK2RY.html In addition, at least with a kinesiology degree there will be jobs available for you. With a biology major…. You’re kinda stuck unless you go to grad school

Amanda Gensiejewski I love how you said you REFUSE TO LET IT STOP YOU. I love that mindset Amanda. You’re going to make it into dpt school and you’re going to impact so many lives with your grit, determination, compassion, and love. So many patients will come to the clinic to only want your care and seek you as their physical therapist. The debt is pretty significant, but working everyday to love what we do makes it worth it!!! How are you dealing with online classes during Covid at this time? Going back to the classroom in the fall?

@@drjustinleedpt Just reading that makes me so happy I can't wait to be in the profession. Our classes are mostly all online which is a little disappointing but I will live at school regardless and still make the most of my senior year. Fuck that. Use to flirt with the physical therapy field and went with nursing. Got associates degree completely paid for by pell grant. Then joined army reserves that pays 5k a year in TA and has 30k in student loan repayment. Bachelors in nursing completely paid for and start at $35/hr.

Considering the money, the physical therapy route is a hard profession to get into because the amount of money that you make for the amount of loans that you accrue is not good. However the field is PT is so unique that that outweighed the cost for me. I would much rather have autonomy and love what I do providing physical treatments rather than work in the hospital and deal with medicine

I believe the money generating potential for PT has only met 50% of it's capacity. If you REALLY want to create the value that will generate a serious income, I recommend educating yourself in a dry needling certification and spinal manipulation therapies. These valuable tools take seconds to minutes to complete in their totality and will plant that seed in your patients head that YOU are the guy to go to when you hurt!

This would depend a lot on the clinic you’re at I think. And the geographic location. If you’re bilingual in California, it’s not quite as rare as in some less diverse states so you may not be able to leverage higher salary based on bilingual abilities alone
