Daniel Kahneman and Ellen Langer go head to head over perception and bias. Should we see our bias as central to what makes us unique as individuals?
This excerpt is taken from the debate 'The perception bias,' recorded during the monthly IAI Live event in October of 2023.

We think there is a correct way of seeing the world, and we look to eradicate any bias that might vitiate this true perception of the world. But is this an error? Psychologists argue that perceptual biases are at the heart of our understanding of the world. Moreover, philosophers going back to Kant have argued that without the imposition of human concepts on sensation, there would be no perception and no consciousness.
Should we reject the desire to overcome bias and see the world truly, and instead see our perception of the world as one particular outcome of an extended process of trial and error?

How aligned your senses, imagination and perception is with a reality the more true to the reality . May we align well, in many ways, appropriately ,with the greatest realities

The best example of a belief we hold as absolutely true that turns out to be false is that horses don’t eat meat? So weak!

Just for fun. Canard: Yarn of carnivorous cannibalistic Mallard ducks. Quite an appocrafal story, which is now a word used to describe other ridiculous tall tales.

Putting a ‘probably’ in front of all our declarations of belief is not gonna help if nothing else changes.

"We should discriminate." Exactly. The word gets a bad rap.

Mostly, bias is towards certain or other people(s) and thus generally off topic. If we could look for universal principles and focus there, while there is a lot to do, it just might stop getting caufht up in all the "claptrap." By the way, that is an appropos desciptive word. Supporting my group as opposed to others, or being against the "other," is a form of societal self-destructive ego/self-love. John Nash's equalibrium, if you remember the bar scene, which sough an equalubrium between self and group interest to find the maximum benefit for both spheres. That was wise.

There are different kinds of belief and different levels of different kinds. In some ways trees believe in sunlight .

It’s (human) nature to not want to accept that what one believes or wants isn’t what comes to pass.

The bias might have been caused by information cocoon, it is not intrinsic or IQ related. One can be educated and ill- educated at the same time.

I think there is a 'Holy Grail' to everything, not just Physics. It's just that we haven't evolved yet to imagine or achieve it as yet. No worries, we've come thus far from "nomads", faith will take us 'home'!!!😊
