My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa and hoping to make the city of light my home base - at least for the foreseeable future. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlog daily, and love pizza a little too much.

FAQ:
How long have you lived in France? On and off for over two years.
What do you miss most about ho- NACHOS
You're always talking about living on some ship. WHAT SHIP? - I made a "Draw My Life" video that explains a lot here: • Draw My Life
Where are you from originally? - Pullman, Washington - a small university/agricultural town near Idaho (and yes, the potatoes are amazing).
What do you film with? - I've made a lot of changes recently, but I try to keep my gear list up to date if you want to see what I use and buy some for yourself: bit.ly/JaysGearList
What do you edit with? - Adobe Premiere - it's pretty much all I've ever used since high school.
Aren't you ever freaked out by leaving your camera behind to film yourself? - Yep. But not too badly - I tend to be careful when I do.
Why are you living in #Paris? - Because I've always wanted to; I feel at home here: • Why I Want to Live in ...
Do you speak French? Oui. • Un Jour en Francais (E...
You talk a lot about the books you're working on, what are they about? - They're sci-fi (and fantasy) and I've got a decent pitch for you here: • The Pitch (Sorta) - Ag...
Do you make money off RU-vid? - Ha, no. I wish. It took me over 500 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - The easiest and best way to support me is through Patreon, where you can pitch in as little as $1/mo to help me make better videos: / jayswanson
I don't trust this Patreon thing - can I just paypal you? - Here's my ko-fi if that's your thing (and coffee is your game): ko-fi.com/jayswanson
But I want to send you something tangible! - I do have a wishlist on Amazon, though it's a bit complicated with the international shipping situation. This is the US one: amzn.to/2ykS9Ux
And here's the French wishlist: bit.ly/JaysFrenchWishList
Thanks for watching!

Just found out my husband's boss was at a private dinner in Paris that you filmed. They go to Paris every year! Small world. When he found out we are going in May and that we were watching your videos he said he had met you. They also watch your vlogs.

Thanks Jay for this video. We're coming to Paris soon and will be taking a bike tour thanks to you. I'm really enjoying your videos. Got sucked in with the 25 Tips in 8 and then moved on to the 20 in 20. Then the Dyalla music and production style sucked me in even more. You do an amazing job with the Vlogs. Thanks very much!

Great vid man :) I love riding my bike, although not 100% safe. You always have to keep your eyes peeled and be aware of your surroundings. If you feel vulnerable or unsafe in a bike it's much better to go slow and act as predictable as possible so motorists can avoid you easily. Also, at night. it is a MUST to have lights and reflective things

I biked around Paris a few days ago on the Velib system. I can say the 8e, 9e, and 2e have crazy amount of traffic, and pretty suicidal. I stopped just for 1 min against a curb, and a city bus honked and brushed passed me within inches. Fk that. Elsewhere biking is a little bit easier, but you still have to be on alert. One thing about Paris, you can bike in the opposite direction of a 1 way street on a narrow 3 foot wide sharrows and you have to be really alert when you pass a car as the streets are narrow. As a pedestrian, you really have to worry most about people on motorscooters, most of them simply ignore traffic rules, and the crosswalk. As a member of nyc's only bike coop, I did visit 3 bike coops here in Paris and was happy to see/learn about the bicycling culture here despite the infrastructure difficulties. I didn't have time to try your game.

Those cheese dishes made me drool. I love french cheese, but in the US (at least where I live) it is hard to find, expensive, and doesn't taste as good. I'm not sure why the taste is different, but I have 2 hypotheses. First, a lot of cheese I've had in France is not pasteurized but unpasteurized cheese cannot be imported in the US and pasteurization seems to destroy flavor. Second, Americans are used to very, very mild cheeses, so that's the kind of cheese that gets sent to the US. For example, I bought a camembert from Normandy at Trader Joe's. It tasted nothing like the camembert I ate in Normandy. Anybody else have an explanation?
@Kingleazard
@Kingleazard 5 лет назад
If you want the REAL Camembert de Normandie, it has to be AOP (Appelation d'Origine Protégée) It means it came from Normandie and it is protected against fake Camemberts who are called "camembert fabriqué en Normandie" which can come from who knows where.

There is one reason why riding WITHOUT a helmet for proficient cyclists is preferable, streets with motorists. When cycling most motorists leave around 60cm (2ft) when confronted with a bicycle. That is enough for the cyclists to not feel crowded. However, when motorists see cyclists WITH a helmet that distance drops to 45cm (1.5ft). That holds true for ALL 'cycle cities', including the cities like Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Munich and the like. Various scientific research has been done and it seems to be 'hard' evidence. However, those who are not proficient should wear one AND USE LESS CROWED venues to practice. For instance, where cities like Amsterdam, Copenhagen or Utrecht, are a joy to bike through for the proficient cyclists, please, if you are not, stick to the parks and less travelled streets. And, yes, I couldn't leave it alone 😉
@kaleidoscopeallie
@kaleidoscopeallie 5 лет назад
Yes, I have seen that research as well. The Swedes ignore it COMpletely because. . . . well Sweden. . . . but anyhow. Have you seen the airbag helmets? They look like you're wearing a big scarf basically but if you start to fall POOOOOF inflatable helmet. :D I want one but they're pricey. (perfect for the research too. .. I have helmet, drivers don't see it and leave more space)

@@kaleidoscopeallie You know that most head injuries occur at home and more particular in the bathroom? Next with regard to head injuries sustained are cars. Not the bikes should were helmets but motorists. Ah well, it's easier to blame the bicycle instead of infrastructure. I don't know what a docked bike share program is (or dockless bikes/ebikes either). Can you describe?
@notthegoatseguy
@notthegoatseguy 5 лет назад
@@yvonnerahmes9618 In the US and in a some European cities, there are docked bikes like this (www.nydailynews.com/resizer/CV2bCRfiK0eW3zpmlxmcoc6kzdw=/800x0/arc-anglerfish-arc2-prod-tronc.s3.amazonaws.com/public/CI7GXW26SC32RIM5EJTATGGQUA.jpg) and you download an app and can rent them for a set time. Then when you're finished, you find a docking station and put it back. Barcelona has one, but it is restricted to residents, for example. I believe London has a dock system as well. Dockless is like the Lime (green) scooters. Lime started with dockless bicycles and electric bicycles, though those are becoming less common and scooters seem to be their preferred tech.
