I must have played through this game a dozen times as a kid, this is probably one of the best, and most underrated games of the entire 16-bit era. A classic revenge story staring shotgun wielding tank-top Conan, about as 90s as it gets, what more do you need?
I thought I was the only one doing these weird little traditions. My birthday is on December so I always got new videogames before Christmas. So I spent all of December playing 24/7. I got goldeneye and ocarina of time for N64. But then I stopped getting games and started playing PC games. The first pc game was quake, doom, Wolfenstein and age of empire. I'm talking about 1997/ 98/ 99
1:33 Dude, this scene is absolutely gorgeous, I love the deep blues and harsh reds and how fantastically the mix with the shadows here, it so well done
Cinematic Platformers are my favorite genre. Loved them back in the day, always wished there were more. I still have to play Nosferatu. I never looked at them as action games, but more like adventure games.
This game is a masterpiece !!! Is imposible not to love it even with all the "flaws" things (the game was intentionally made clunky to add tension to the player).Blackthorne deserved a sequel. Maybe a fan request would get us a Blackthorne 2.
This is by far one of the best games I ever played period... the atmosferic ost and the sound fx are so satisfying! The combat is more tatical, like a proper shoot-out, going in guns blazing will just make you an easy target. The stages are really wel designed but its quite common to hit a dead end or getting stuck, I had to quit the stage more times than died. The only flaws in this game is the lack of a map, the lack of 8 direction shooting (giving it to the player AND to enemys would make combat so much more interesting), lack of divertity in enemy design and style. And, this is more of an upgrade if a remake ever comes up, making it 2.5 D with paralax and dynamic backgrounds would be awesome! Also it would allow more oponents per stage, the 2v1 and 3v1 fights are the toughest of this game but only because its easy to get cornered, and enemys always win on close-quarters so having a secondary attack would improve greatly this game
Good games are always re-playable, and this game is great. One of my favourite platform videogames ever. I use to play it from time to time. I love it all way (graphics, story, ambientation, music, etc)
Great work as always from the Drunk! I played through Blackthorne for the first time five or ten years ago and loved it. The jumps required precision, but I don't remember it ever feeling unfair or frustrating. The only caveat IMHO is the final boss, as he is quite difficult and the skill set needed to defeat him is different than all the gameplay that came before. That said, I'd still highly recommend this one.
Always loved this game. Recently beat the PC version that you can get free for making a battle.net account. The only shame of it is the music from the SNES version is a lot better, and is very different. I love the deliberate action of games like this. IMO this is just an awesome game.
as a fan of flashback for many years i was exited to check out blackthorne. id never heard of it & playing through it for the 1st time now. nice 1 SNES drunk, it's awesome!
I know! Me too... I get cheesed knowing of some of the other games out there that aren't that good that EVERYONE universally played just because they were marketed better
No clue where I got this game from when I was a kid, but I actually really enjoyed it. "Cinematic platformer" is a great way to describe it. I preferred the gameplay of Super Mario World and DKC, but this game was probably one of the first that I truly felt "immersed" in.
I'm writing a reboot for this game. It's incredibly awsome and it has so much potential. I think it would make a great ego shooter in the veins of Duke Nukem.
Great Video. I picked this game up about 6 months ago and I like it but agree its very very different. The slow pace threw me off at first but once you get use to it, it fits.
I used to love this game on the pc back in the day, and some years later (still back in the day mind you) I got it on the SNES, got aaaaaaaall the way to last world, but DAAAAAAAMN is this a hard game, great game yes, but damn hard!! Great video, you remind me of another youtuber with that voice of yours :D
Cellfix It is hard, but it is also a lot more forgiving with deaths than other games. The game sorta expects you to die very often, especially with the controls, so thank goodness for it being liberal with deaths.
I found the the 32x version to be a slightly better experience, personally I prefer it's 3d models and audio over the Snes. It's totally subjective though, their both solid games.
Eh for someone used to the cinematic platform genre it's a great game and none of the flaws mentioned exists. Personally I'd have mentioned that the shoot and hide gameplay gets repetitive after a while, but overall great game
I already played Out of the Word, Flash Back and Blackthorne and all them are incredible, with his singularities each. OFTW and FB has a more serious background, but the last it's more fun and give the feeling of being a bad ass. I'd say that I had more fun playing Blacjthorne than playing the other two games from the snes era.
I just found this game on a 900 games in 1 SNES cart, and I like it a lot. Love the animation, but - like you said - the controls are stiff. It is a fun game. The No Look shot hooked me.
Nice!, just 2 weeks ago I finally found a nice CIB copy of Blackthorne and Flashback for SNES. I've not played yet any of them but I sure like how they look, I do know the controls are very rigid which I understand is these games' style.
Flashback's controls are on a grid and I think Blackthorne as well. Knowing this takes the guess work out of some jumps. Won't make the game any easier trust me. In flashback when running, you automatically jump on high ledges as well
The final boss is an excellent example of testing all the myriad skills the player has been honing throughout the game; not, to borrow from Yahtzee Croshaw, the opportunity for the art and sound department to bombasticly show off their video game college degrees (endemic to so many modern AAA titles).
I only played this game once on a former friends GBA back in the early 2000s and I completely missed out on this game back in the SNES era despite growing up in the 90s, but the thing I remember most about this game is those orcs. I guess they're supposed to be mutants, but I really thought they were futuristic space orcs and they are hilarious. if you get shot by one they do a hilarious laugh but then they leave themselves open for you to shoot them and then they die it's so funny! "HAHAHA OW!!!" Now the classic Blizzard game I am more familiar with that came out before they made it big with the starcraft and the Warcraft games and yes eventually world of Warcraft games, would be lost Vikings. I remember watching my older brother's play it on the Sega channel and I eventually got it much later on the GBA. I hope to find a review of that.
The odd thing is that your reward at the end of each level is a better shotgun. But there's no game+ or a way to go back and play earlier levels with the better equipment nor can you advance to the next level without picking up the new weapon if you want a bigger challenge. Missed opportunity I guess.
Loved that game. Still have it it in the box. Unlike this tweaker, the 20 pages of backstory in the manual didn't illicit whinging but was a bonus that made the game better.
Those type of manuals were great, they were always a treat back then, story, sick artwork and of course the controls, it never felt extra but essential instead.
Not sure how anyone can say the 32x looks better. The art style on the snes version is way better. Also the music in this game is great. Really atmospheric. I only found about this game a couple of years ago. Never heard of it back in the snes era. I think it's great.
I rented this game when it came out, my local convenience store had a small rental selection. I was so disappointed, because I really thought it was going to be like contra 3. I was probably 9 and too young to really ‘get’ games like this, I just got pissed when I saw how the jump worked and never played it again. I should revisit this one, with an open mind lol
Great game. I love how you have the choice to not kill innocent prisoners. That idea alone makes it unique in the SNES era. And that shotgun is amazing!
Kyle (lol) looks like Matt McMuscles when he still had some skin on them bones. Can't get over how the game doesn't even let you free the prisoners. Seriously, they're alive, and you can kill them, and when you do their chains break, but you can't set them free? The hell lol
unfortunately a lot of the games I loved when I was young don't really do it for me any more. Walk to the right, kill everything, collect the coins...blah. But weird games like this one holds up really well! but maybe it's just me.
This is one of those games thats good that none of your friends have ever heard of.. everytime I ask someone if they've played this game they have no idea wtf im talking about lol
