There's a big difference between 'working class' and 'rough' people. If someone grew up in working class society(especially on a council estate) they'd appreciate the clear distinction. Most working class people don't conform to the 'rough' stereotype -- quite the opposite. The idea that all working class people have no regard for social standards and morality is a huge myth that vicious middle class people enjoy belieiving. It's only the small minority of 'rough' people in society that shamelessly exhibit anti-social tendencies with no regard for dignity.
Additionally, many who consider themselves middle class are in fact, working class, but obviously not underclass. The sitcom 'Keeping up appearance's' (Mrs Bucket) showed this tendency.

She is extremely embarrassed by the clearly working class(some would say "a bit rough") members of her family - and she even pronounces her common name[Bucket] as "bouquet'. 😄 Snobbery is a key feature of middle class society. I think the pursuit of higher status does tend to engender a snobby attitude towards those who are then deemed to be on a lower rung of society. You can find this behaviour in most societies across the world, so it seems to be a natural feature of the human ego. But obviously it's not something to be proud of, as you can end up being very unfair towards people with lower social status. I think the riots were a prime example of the division between working and middle class. There hasn't been enough sympathy and empathy from middle class society towards the serious issues that are causing so much anguish for working class people in poorer areas.
The combination of blatant two tier policing/courts, preferential treatment for some groups, more suppressive laws to shut everyone down, tax rises and a deep recession will be the last straw.
