Complete Playlist: • Kanto Solo Challenges
Rules and Explanations
Rules: (1) Only use the one Pokémon in Battle, others for HMs are fine. (2) No Items in battle (3) No Glitches* (4) Set Mode (5) No saving in the Elite Four (6) No evasion moves
Badge Boost "Glitch" Explanation: When you collect odd numbered badges the game boosts a stat by 12.5%. Brock gives ATK, Surge DEF, Koga SPE, and Blaine SPC (in game text is wrong). When any of your stats are modified (even by you using a move like Withdraw, or your opponent using Leer) the badge boosts are re-applied. So If you use Swords Dance, you also gain *an additional 12.5% in Speed/Defence/Special (on top of the 12.5% you were supposed to be getting). When you level up, the game corrects this error, and only the non-glitch 12.5% remains. Because of how difficult it is to avoid, I've allowed for it to be exploited, since opponents will spam Leer/Growl anyways, and this way battles are less random. Red/Blue are extremely buggy, so there's always going to be some glitches present, and because of how unavoidable this one is, it is allowed in runs, and considered more like a special Generation 1 mechanic as opposed to a glitch.

Re: Dig being allowed in certain buildings. You can Dig (or use Escape Rope; they use the same code) based on the tileset of the map you're on. You can Dig out of maps that use tilesets Forest, Cemetery, Cavern, Facility, and Interior. Forest, Cemetery, and Cavern are all pretty straightforward, except they coded a special condition to prevent you from Digging out of Agatha's room. Facility is used in: Cinnabar Gym, Cinnabar/Pokemon Mansion, Power Plant, Rocket Hideout, Saffron Gym, and Silph Co floors 1-10. Interior is used in: Bill's House, the Pokemon Fan Club in Vermilion, and Silph Co 11F. When they made revisions for the Yellow version, they added special conditions to prevent you from Digging out of Bill's House and the Fan Club. If they didn't want you to be able to Dig out of Cinnabar or Saffron Gyms, they could have added conditions there too. So it's definitely not a bug or glitch; at most an oversight. This info comes from the decompers of PRET, not me. Hope it helps! 👍

As much as I feel like the Squirtle run wasn't at full potential, I understand not doing repeat runs for every single mon. So I'll take Blastoise's performance here as redemption for the Squirtle line as a whole. Also, it'll be interesting when you eventually get to the middle forms of the starters and how they compare, both to each other and to their younger and older forms.
@nolongeraperson
@nolongeraperson 6 месяцев назад
Honestly, he should still do it just for Squirtle. Not using the BBG is tremendous. I beat Bulbasaurs time first try and I was just messing around, not even doing the efficient order and at a lower level of 66.
@spindash64
@spindash64 3 месяца назад
Admittedly, it's still understandable for Blastoise to have a glowup performance: the line is supposed to be a Jack of all trades, and that's somewhat tricky to use as a Squirtle the whole game. But as a Blastoise the whole game, that means you are almost always guaranteed an even match in raw numbers with the enemy, so long as you aren't super underleveled

@HannibalKantter
@HannibalKantter Год назад
Indeed he does hold up, specially after they gave him Shell Smash, which lowers your defenses in 1 and raises your attacks and speed in *2* in a single turn. Suddenly, this guy went from being the competitively worst Gen1 starter to being the best, to the point its Mega Evolution was banned to Ubers, the tier of Legendaries, in National Dex. Something that both Venusaur and Charizard have never accomplished. Way to go, tactical turtle, way to go

@@earlymorninstonedpimp It really wasnt. It was ok before Hidden Abilities and just mediocre after. There are so many water pokemon and a good chunk of those performed better in VGC over the years. It saw usage last years as a bulky resource in rain teams, even then was way less popular than Fini. I recall you doing Gengar with minimum battles and not using all your rare candies, so I think it still should have been ranked above Blastoise on account of that and with its lower finishing level. This run compared to the old Squirtle one really shows the power of the badge boost glitch though.

@ShinyTillDawn
@ShinyTillDawn Год назад
@@roxienatura different Pokémon level up at different rates
@roxienatura
@roxienatura Год назад
@@ShinyTillDawn True, but that only starts to throw off the comparisons if it’s a completely clean minimum battles run and you’re accidentally gaining levels you don’t need (which I believe has only happened with 2 Pokémon so far). If there’s any additional battles, the level is a good representation of the power level you need to grind to to finish the game. Time has a lot more issues as a measure since it penalizes a lot of things that may take an extra turn but have a 100% win rate (like a lot of status strategies). So it’s not a great measure of how good something is.
@roxienatura
@roxienatura Год назад
@@Kench154 I tend to view it in the reverse of what you said: If it’s about how easily you can get through the game, then speed is a reasonable factor. But if it’s just a comparison of “who’s the best at winning” (which is usually what we mean when we say a game character is the best), then level captures that a lot more directly. It’s why competitive play has level caps, but no penalties for the speed of battles beyond a generous time limit for choosing moves. One way to think about it: If a Pokémon has a consistent 10% higher win rate than average, we’d say it’s better than average. If a Pokémon ends battles 10% faster than average, we have no idea if it’s better than average or not. It could actually have a lower win rate, but matches end faster (even if the ending is a loss).
@roxienatura
@roxienatura Год назад
@@Kench154 I can understand that. It may be my own limitations, but I can’t imagine any battle gaming genre (fighting, strategy, RPG) where the “best” means something other than winning the most. But I do acknowledge that could be my own limited scope. Thanks for keeping the discussion civil. Always appreciated in an online convo.

I swear I been waiting on the runs with all 3 Gen 2 Kanto starters fully evolved and to get them back to back to back in the span of a couple of days is a very good thing!!!

I actually don't understand why there would be any argument for putting Blastoise second - it got higher time than Alakazam, higher level then Alakazam and, as you mentioned, you keep getting better with these runs, so later runs are kinda expected to go better than earlier ones. Am I missing something here? EDIT: Forgot to mention, that I loved the video ^^ JRose's month is awesome

For the level difference maybe Jrose didn't have to use all of his rare candy here.

it only lost twice throughout the whole run and both were due to user error, that's probably why

you forget something, gengar was also a challenge run where he intentionaly gimped his play, i think it was one of those minimal battles as well.

I think it's important to also mention that, while squirtle probably would've done a bit better with the badge boost glitch in mind, the same would apply to bulbasaur as well, since it has growth and swords dance, as well as charmander having swords dance itself.

I've got no problem with blastoise being rated above gengar. Especially because gengar was one of the first runs. I'm sure gengar could shave a few minutes off its time if you tried again.

Always been a Charizard fan but this makes me respect Blastoise. The run was similar to Vaporeon but with a better starting moveset and an attack stat it can make use of.

Same but it’s not the same playing field at all. Zard has to deal with Lorelei, Gyarados, and the champs Blastoise. Blastoise is weak to grass and electric. There are no electric moves in the elite four/champion and you can use ice on Saur and of course, Lance. Gen 1 heavily favors water
@nolongeraperson
@nolongeraperson 6 месяцев назад
@@dannyt9744Pokemon in general heavily favors water 😂 Just about every water pokemon has Ice coverage and they usually outspeed or outbulk the Grass type. The only other thing that resists water is Dragon and that's also covered by Ice. Basically water's only real enemies are electric and other water pokemon with better coverage. Oh, and the Ice type that has Freeze-Dry.

Is the colour scheme really indistinguishable from the default blue one? Either way it looks really good. Your colour game has been really strong for a while now.

Surprised at this one, really underestimated Blastoise's movepool. I think Gengar should be above it personally but the fact that it's even in the same league as it and Alakazam is impressive for a starter Pokemon.

I really hope that you'll do Nidoqueen as well as Nidoking, both to mirror their pre evolution facing off in the same video and to see how their starting movesets will affect the timings. I did a run with both on my own, using the exact same routing, and the result would probably surprise a lot of people.

You misunderstood me. I know that Jrose was talking about Nidoking, as in gen 1 speedruns he's by far the best; what I'm saying in my comment is that, since the two Nidoran were featured in the same video and directly compared, I hope Jrose will do the same for Nidoking and Nidoqueen to see if the result will be the same.
