Doctor Who Flux is here! I've been a vocal critic of the Jodie Whittaker and Chris Chibnall's era so far, but I thought I'd celebrate the arrival of Series 13 with some positivity. So here's five things I like about Series 11, 12 and the Specials in between.

I won’t lie, Chibnall’s era has consistently left me disappointed. I don’t find the majority of the stories that engaging, and mostly kind of boring. Similarly, I haven’t clicked with the characters, finding them to be bland and generic. And to be honest, the whole Timeless Child thing has kind of sapped my enthusiasm for this show. But that’s not to say there haven’t been things I’ve liked. - Jodie Whittaker: while I don’t like the Thirteenth Doctor, Jodie consistently brings a great energy and enthusiasm to the role. It’s not enough to save the scripts, but you can clearly see her passion for the role. - The guest stars: for the most part, the guest actors have been really good, actors like Vinnette Robinson, Chris Noth, Alan Cumming, Charlotte Ritchie, Goran Visnjic, and Ian Gelder have managed to elevate their respective stories, while Sacha Dhawan and Jo Martin arguably overshadow Jodie and the main cast as the Master and the Fugitive Doctor respectively. - The historicals: they’re not perfect episodes, but I appreciate episodes like “Rosa”, “Demons” and “Tesla” for shining a light on historical events and people that we don’t usually get to learn about. And then there’s “Villa Diodati”, which is a real standout episode for this era. - The title sequence: not much to say, the visuals and the music are perfect, and a great modernisation of the original titles. Easily the best title sequence of the revival. All in all, while I haven’t been enthusiastic about this era, I’d be lying if I said there was nothing to like about it. I remain cautiously optimistic that Flux will end up being a satisfying experience, and a solid conclusion to the Chibnall era.

Five things I liked about the Chibnall era: 1. - The historical episodes. Demons of the Punjab is probably my favorite of the Chibnall era, and I appreciate it for teaching me something about India and Pakistan that I knew nothing about. 2. - The Dalek episodes. Making them into mind controlling squids that can use humans as their puppets makes them scary again in a way that they really haven't been in a while. 3. - Bringing back The Master's Tardis. First time we've gotten to see it in the modern era and I can't believe that it took so long. 4. - The new cyberman theme. I miss Gold's music a lot but the new cyberman theme is amazing. 5. - Karvanista. I love having a companion/pseudo companion that isn't human and doesn't look human and we haven't really had much of that in the modern era.

I will now strive to forget everything about the last couple of series except for the aspects you mentioned. The historicals, the fan-girling, the weirdness, Jo Martin’s Doctor, and also Jodie as a person. Truly, I’ve loved her in every interview I’ve seen where she is just herself and not the Doctor. Okay so to actually leave a serious comment, I do agree that there have been aspects of Chibnall Who I have liked. Particulaly his use of classic monsters. You touched on that with the Daleks, in Resolution even beyond the face-off with the army we had a very cunning and sinister story showing how intelligent even a single Dalek can be when it's unarmed and backed against the wall. Revolution had a solid idea (even if it was a bit ripped off from Blood of the Daleks) that really could've been explored more, and I like the idea of the Doctor being that powerless that she has no choice but to bring other Daleks in to deal with the drones. The Cybermen too also stood-out too me, Ashad was genuinely creepy to watch. The stuff with the Cyber-Wars in Ascension was very interesting and in itself was a strong episode, that if part 2 had stayed focused on that and not been derailed by The Timeless Children, could've been a really good Cyberman story. So even with my low expectations of Flux, I am looking forward to seeing how he handles the Sontarans after the Moffat era (I liked Strax but I wish he hadn't been the sole Sontaran rep during that time)
@Joe_Brennan_
@Joe_Brennan_ 2 года назад
That frustration of the Cyberman finale isn’t the usual Chibnall “why was it so bland”, it’s actually “how did you fumble something that could’ve been so great!?!” It’s almost worse
@anon5263
@anon5263 2 года назад
@@Joe_Brennan_ Yeah, not gonna lie. I enjoyed Ashad. A Cyberman with a vendetta is great. Why he thought that blowing up his only good villain to shoehorn in a lame Master reveal we've seen a million times and the Timeless Child nonsense, is beyond me. Spending your whole episode building up a guy as a threat, only to have him disabled in two seconds by The Master doesn't actually build up The Master as a villain or character, it just diminishes the original villain.

I definitely agree that the historical episodes have been the standout of the Chibnall era! Most episodes are boring/blend into each other, but the episodes that have stuck in my mind (and enjoyed upon first watch) have been the historicals! Particular shout out to Tesla, the guy who played him was absolutely incredible. I enjoyed the show highlighting the history between Tesla & Edison (and actually showing that Edison was a shit). I also quite liked Demons of the Punjab, mostly because of the cool Punjabi remix of the Doctor Who theme tune, I though that was very cool. Ada Lovelace was great as you rightly pointed out, and Alan Cummings was superb! @nightowl8477

I like the structure of Chris's Who. Ten episodes (50 minutes a piece) with no over-arching narrative beyond character is such a nice shape for the show. Losing episodes means no more Doctor-Lites or Companion-Lites by necessity (we can still have them, but we no longer _need_ them). Also means more time and money to spend on fewer scripts, upping the quality compared to what they otherwise would have been. Gives the show more of a varied feel in having new concepts every week, no two-parters. Then there's the New Year's Special. Yes, I know - Christmas Day, 7:30PM, BBC1 is the primetime spot of the year in British television, and it's cool that Doctor Who had it for as long as it did, but there's only so many stories to tell. With New Year's, you can do anything so long as it's about looking to the future (Steven and Mark did a horror the other year!). And, really, the tone of every Doctor Who episode should be about looking forward. Not looking back, which is an intrinsic element to any Christmas story. It's never been an easy fit for Doctor Who, unlike New Year's Day. And doing a blockbuster every year is so inspired, what a great take on the Daleks. Love those stories, they're always a cut above their prior seasons. A female Doctor _is_ bold, and three companions even more so. Both make you go _"Ooh. Can we do that? Is that a good idea?"_ which, as Steven Moffat once said, is the only audience response you can get to know you're doing your job properly as showrunner. I think Seagun is a great choice too. The title sequence and theme really is the best we've had. All New Directors is cool, though they could have been chosen better (not a fan of how every episode fits one style now, we used to be more varied: rare for TV these days. Also doesn't help that I think the style they went for - 'cinematic' - is both a terrible idea _and_ poorly done), but not such a fan of the All New Writers rule. On paper, Chris's initial vision for the show is slick, precise, and very risky. In execution, I'm not quite as keen, but I admire what he set out to do. From a structural point of view, he's improved the show tenfold.

So this will be very controversial, so read the whole thing before replying: I don’t think RTD should ignore the Timeless Child. I think that would be like if Moffat had ignored the Time War just cuz he thought it was dumb. And if Jodie comes back for a special, it couldn’t be ignored that it informed literally her whole arc. Instead, I want a Day of the Doctor type thing (though preferably a miniseries rather than just one special) with the Fugitive Doctor actually *about* undoing it’s canonicity. Give her a story about how all those other regenerations the Doctor was forced to forget were somehow wiped out, maybe by an old rival time lord, or maybe she has to wipe them out herself, leaving only her and the 14 official incarnations we know. It’s just…Chibnall made it such a core part of the Doctor. To pretend he never did that would feel strange, and would piss off the half of the fans who liked his run. I want a great story about undoing it, I think that’s the best case scenario. You may disagree but I hope I’ve made my points well.

8:00 "Ada should have become a regular companion". Yes to this, a number of fans (me included) have been crying out for NuWho to have non-contemporary companion and this was a perfect setup for one who already showed a glimpse of what it would be like. And with all his faults I do have to give Chibnall credit for re-establishing the classic monsters as the villainous and scary characters they once were. I hope he will do the same with Sontarans in Flux. 🤞 I could not agree more on the fabulous title sequence and accompanying theme tune. Perhaps it is the nods and attention to details in revisiting and evoking the classic who ones that is giving nostalgia vibes but for me they are leaps and bounds better than what has come before in NuWho.

I suspect he’ll be binned when RTD returns, since RTD’s style is much closer to a loud and trashy (sorry, “epic”) aesthetic. Similarly, the incidental music has been toned down so you can actually hear the dialogue during this run. I do hope Akinola stays on, but fear it’s vanishingly unlikely. As for Whittaker, I think she does a lot with a little. That we still don’t really know what her Doctor stands for isn’t on her. She’s done well with half-hearted writing. She should have been directed and written better. Alas. It would have been great to see her stay on with a showrunner that wasn’t RTD but that was a great SF writer with an eye for character development and richness.

There are episodes which are fine but there aren't any which are great, and the ones that had a chance of being great are generally compromised by this weird need to make everything into an excessively tonally similar soup, or they're The Haunting of Villa Diodati which is more let down by being the first part of an overall fairly bad three part story.

In that moment where she confronts the Fam about how she needs to make a drastic decision, it suddenly occurred to me that her awkward demeanor could well be covering her drive to, as Twelve told her, "always try to be nice," until she inevitably can't because she can "never fail to be kind." I'll be waiting to catch up with Flux until it's all out, but I hope that they tap more into her character. It doesn't even have to agree with my read of that particular episode, but I want *something* that feels like a distinct Doctor! Before Flux, there were several lovely episodes, like the Rosa episode, and rewatching the James Bond-esque episode recently reminded that it was a genuinely fun episode and Sacha made such a wonderful Master. Flux was genuinely disappointing, even on re-watch, and really killed the momentum of the show. I haven't finished the last 3 episode of Jodie's run after the Flux slog, but even knowing a bit of what's coming, I am just so sad that we didn't get the opportunity to have Jodie's doctor shine. Watching it all over again, she has the capability of being such a wonderful doctor, but Chris really let her talents go to waste. I'm looking forward to Tennant for the sheer fact that it won't be Chibnall anymore, but I so desperately wish Jodie stayed on just a little bit longer. She deserved it.

I don't enjoy this era and yet 5. I do enjoy the prequel possibilities of the Timeless Doctors. Plus I love that bluudy frog! 4. Resolution was an absolute microwave dinner. I hope RTD makes the show popular enough again to be worthy of the Christmas day slot 3. Rosa is one I'd happily rewatch if I was forced at gunpoint to rewatch 3 episodes from this era. As for the other two... hopefully that's not an itchy trigger finger... 2. It's pretty but it fails to instruct the audience, as the "old" modern intro did, on the basic format of the show: the Time Vortex was previously shown as being damaged - by fire, storms, time itself unwinding - as the prime timeline is rudely being altered, say by anachronistic tech, alien incursion, or a mad scientist using a combination of both. The TARDIS was then shown responding (to all calls;) and heading in, tracing the damage back to it's point of origin... it's literally a simplification of the whole concept, for those who choose to see it. And it's not there in the current blobby thing and I kind of miss it 1. Jodie is just not leading man material. The weakest, most beige Doctor since the Fifth, who's TV era (I love him on Big Finish) Jodie's reminds me of more and more. That said, T'Nia Miller is impressing me more and more in Foundation. And she's bald, so that's point 5 covered. But she displays strength of character, charisma, and you just can't stop looking at her when she's in full flow. Jodie gets lost in a crowd and that's simply not the Doctor, for me. Yes, it's the writing from the mad lad himself, but also yes it's Jodie The Giant Man Baby Killer Whittaker herself. Nuff said (The first episode of Flux just started and by the time the opening credits hit, I'm back here to finish this comment. And that, Good Sir, says it all)

Personally I actually liked a lot about Chibnall's approach and ideas, which arguably felt the most like The Classic Era compared to RTD's soap opera and Moffatt's fantasy. I liked the move to New Year's from Christmas a lot. I love Segun Akinola's work far more than Murray Gold's. It's just too bad he had too many companions and largely didn't seem to know where to put them, some of the more political aspects were far too blunt, on-the-nose, and misapplied, and that he was the least talented writer of his whole team, even while he had amazing writers. Also the acting was too subdued generally. But a bit like Colin Baker's Era, there're so many outside factors going on that hampered away a lot of potential too. Flux and Trial of a Timelord aren't dissimilar at all. The Real Season 23 and the Real Series 13 are always going to be big What-Ifs. I'm only truly disappointed Chibnall didn't make the 60th his finale, and that Whittaker decided to leave with Chibs rather than break tradition and go into the next showrunner. Oh and as for Whittaker, she's Peter Davison to Jo Martin's Commander Maxil and Capaldi's Tom Baker, there was nowhere for her to go, and after all the arcs kinda wrapping up with Capaldi and after all that gravitas, she had to be more straight and human human [not a joyless, whiny egomaniac like Tennant's], and I think she did that well. If Smith is the perfect alien, Whittaker is the perfect human...or the closest since Eccleston, the ACTUAL best RTD era Doctor atm, but I'm optimistic for Gatwa.

Sorry to put a damper on the list of positives, but... I really enjoyed the celebrity historicals of Chibnall's era too, and I think many of them were very good. Rosa was almost a perfect episode but for some reason they had an unexplained space racist on the loose which made the whole story seem weird. It inadvertently created a white saviour of the doctor by having her fix the timeline so what had happened could happen, I think instead of having the fam run around trying to make sure everything goes to plan they should have been solving a different threat which just meant they had to be in the same places as Rosa Parks. Demons of the Punjab did this brilliantly, balancing history with scifi in a more subtle way so that events wouldn't get carried away from the core of the story, and the history could still happen as it was supposed to without the doctor 'fixing' it. I also feel like they could have done something a bit more with the specials. Granted they have limited scope, but I think instead of just abandoning the Christmas special they should have fazed it out, had a special where they address how Christmas isn't inclusive, but it's widely celebrated in the UK, they had the perfect characters to do this with as well since Yaz could have talked about what 'Christmas' time is like for her family, as people who don't have the same beliefs (they explore a Hindu marrying a Muslim in demon's of the Punjab, but I don't remember if we find out if Yaz is religious or not, but either way) or cultural inheritance. The special could be a good story to bring the fam together a bit more as they share a very important time of year and explain what it means, there could be stuff about how emotional it is for Ryan and Graham too, since they're missing part of their family, and how that changes the holidays. After this special they could change to New Years as representative of how Doctor Who is becoming more inclusive while actually addressing what that means, rather than just glossing over the previously perceived problem and not really doling anything about it.

i love It Takes You Away , the concept the music the sentiment - everything other than how they tell the story through the dialogue the dialogue was just so poor for a lot of it

No he wasn't and there were some good ideas. The problem was he forgot why the show worked and kept trying to do to many things at once. Story arc's got left hanging, things not explained in favor of sending a message that ended up muddled. There was no real focus and the doctor ended up feeling like a cardboard cutout of what she could have been.

Just watch Revolution of the Daleks and thought the writing was shit And yes I could expand beyond that

All of Chibnall's writing on the show is pretty wonky

I quite like the visuals of the intro but I'm not a fan of the theme song, I find the very prominent drumming to be a bit much
