Someone recently sent me a question asking how #Christianity can be true if #Judaism is false because isn't Christianity contingent upon Judaism?
You might be thinking that Judaism is a cause that eventually led to Christianity and in a causal sequence, if you remove an earlier cause, you don’t get the later strands of the sequence, right?

I understand you, but I think you go too far. The secular world, and many Christians, see Christianity as a daughter of post Temple Judaism whereas there are more like sisters and both are daughters of Temple Judaism. Now I happen to think that they are wrong about Christ, but I am far more concerned about the mutual threats we both face, namely radical Islam and Secularism.

I think this has to be worded carefully. Not sure if you are a Catholic (assume most viewers of this channel are), but the Church has rejected supersessionism, the idea that the Christian (Catholic) Church completely replaces Jews as God's chosen people. The children of Abraham are still God's chosen people. As Paul says, we (Gentiles) are grafted into the tree--we're not the main tree, which remains alive, waiting for the natural branches to also be grafted back in. Thus God's promises still apply to the people of Abraham. This is not to deny that they will be saved by being brought to Christ.

Unfortunately what we really need to do to save the Jews, is evangelize them and the rest of the gentiles. Hello I was recently at the costco in calgary and noticed they only had halal options for their whole chicken , chicken full wing and chicken legs. It was their Kirkland brand. I was extremely disappointed as I do like Costco. When supermarkets start having halal only choices you will find that the rendering factories where the chickens are slaughtered will have a predominantly muslim and then shortly thereafter an exclusively muslim workforce. Note also that money spent on halal products does end up supporting islamic causes and in certain cases the subjugation of Christians. Please boycott halal food. Anything with the halal symbol. This incudes the Nandos sauce and walmart brand chips. In the country I originated from halal has become the only option for chicken & beef. Please do not let that happen in Canada.

This is a good treatment of the topic. Great job, Brian. The only thing I would add is a little more historical information. After the Babylonian Exile (which ended around 538 BC), the Jews returned to the lands of Judah, but they had been populated by various Canaanite tribes. During their time in Babylon, and after their return to the lands of Judah, many Jews took non-Jewish wives. Ezra records many reforms enacted at this time, including a call to put away these non-Jewish wives and to return to the pure religion of their ancestors. Many did and many did not. In the wake of this period, you had the rise of several different Jewish sects, including the famous ones we know about from Scripture: the Sadducees and the Pharisees. The false sects could not be purged from Jewish society mainly because the Jews didn't have total control of their lands. First, the remained under the Persian Empire, who allowed them to return to Judah and establish a governorship there. After this, they were conquered by the Alexandrian Empire, and became Hellenized--and it was during this period that the Jewish Scriptures were translated into Greek as the Septuagint. Then, they were subsequently conquered by the Roman Empire, and lived under this rule up until the arrival of the Messiah. The religion of the Hebrews was never meant to be sectarian, in the same way that the Christian Church was never meant to be. That many sects arose under the influence of the Persian, Greek, and Roman empires implies to us that these sects were not merely disagreements of emphasis in OT readings, but very widely divergent beliefs. The Sadducees, for example, did not believe in the resurrection of the dead. Additionally, there was an Edomite group (emphasis on that they were ethnically non-Jewish), the Idumeans, who were forcibly converted to Judaism and integrated into Jewish society during the Hasmonean dynasty in the second century BC. These also had an influence on Jewish society and religion in the lead up to, and in the wake of the arrival of the Messiah. This is distinct from the Samaritans, who were another ethnically non-Jewish group who practiced Judaism, but who lived as a separate and distinct society, and who didn't really influence Jewish society and religion. All of this to say that the religious situation of the people of Judea at the time of Christ was complex and not uniform. The religious group that emerged in the wake of the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple, though widely understood to be prominently of the Pharisaical sect, represents more of an admixture of various competing sects who became unified in the face of Roman persecution. In addition to the adoption of the Talmud, which is a hermeneutic system for interpreting the OT books, Rabbinic Judaism also threw out several books which were included as canonical in the Septuagint: the Deuterocanonical books. This means that Rabbinical Jews possess a different canon of Scripture, and a divergent Scriptural hermeneutic than their predecessors.

Christianity is the final evolution of Second Temple Judaism. Rabbanic Judaism is younger than Christianity. Rabbinic Judaism is not second temple Judaism. If we are being as generous as possible, rabbinic Judaism is a reaction to the destruction of the temple in 70ad, which makes it still younger than Christianity. But if we are going to be honest with ourselves, it owes far more to the middle ages than it does to the time right after the fall of Jerusalem.

Yes, it's more like a bunch of commentaries than akin to Scripture. And yes, some of those commentaries are horrible and blasphemous, but others are interesting and insightful. It's unfair to practitioners of modern Judaism to say that they follow the Talmud. For starters, no one can "follow the Talmud" because, as you said, there are numerous contradictory commentaries in it. It's more of a guide to understand, from the perspective of various rabbis, how the Law came to be and how to understand and follow it in a post-Temple world. Add to that the fact that there are numerous different sects of modern Judaism: Haredi (ultra-Orthodox), Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, etc., that hold various views on what is and isn't authoritative in the Talmud. To accuse every Jewish person of believing the blasphemies of the Talmud is a bit like assuming that every Protestant denies the real presence of the Lord in the Eucharist simply because _some_ do. People are complicated and you should always inquire about a person's individual beliefs and try to avoid gross generalizations.

Claiming the Church gave us the Bible is simply false. The Church didn’t exist for the entirety of the Old Testament’s writing, and the majority of the books in the New Testament are first-hand accounts from founders of the Church BEFORE its formation. The information in the Bible is the foundation of the church, just because they gathered it all and put it in one easy to access book doesn’t mean they invented it.
@BrianHoldsworth

The Bible is a library or which the Old Testament is a section, so the fact that it pre-exists the Church doesn't invalidate the claim. Secondly this is a factually false statement which does invalidate your claim: "the majority of the books in the New Testament are first-hand accounts from founders of the Church BEFORE its formation." The Church was formed on the day of Pentecost. What books of the NT precede Pentecost? The answer is 0.

Rabbinic Judaism attempts to trace its roots back to the Pharisees who crucified Christ. They were not part of the Temple sacrifices (that was the Sadducees), but they had great moral authority as they tended to be closer to the scriptures than the Sadducees. As a result, Rabbinic Judaism has no concept of sacrifices, and does not follow the law of Moses. They are a completely novel religion made after the destruction of the second temple (and thus the genealogies which would indicate who is a Levite and thus eligible to be a priest). They have furthermore been coopted by false messiahs like Sabbatai Zevi and Jacob Frank, and have turned into a group of people bringing debauchery to the world in order to bring the return of God (their words, not mine). This is in contrast to second Temple Judaism (an anachronistic term, as the law of Moses applied to all 12 tribes of Israel, not just Judah), which had a priesthood and regular sacrifices. As the people had broken their covenant with God multiple times (not the least of which by crucifying Christ, the Messiah), God destroyed the Temple and the entire direct lineage, and engrafted in the whole human race. As God is the God of all Humans, not just one tribe.

It depends on what you mean by Judaism. Christianity is a continuation of temple and pharisaical sects of judaism. The thing people call rabbinical judaism today is a response to Christianity while embracing parts of pharisaical judaism. It is in continuity with the rejection of Christ from the first century.
@lynb.3040
@lynb.3040 6 дней назад
Actually, Christians are more of a continuation of the Essenes. Since there are very strong indications that John the Baptist, for example, was an essene, and that could explain how he had a hermit type of lifestyle. According to speculations, the Essenes likely converted to Christianity. But the pharisees, in what they held of true and good, Christianity also continued, of course, since both sects were Jewish and held core beliefs in common. I recommend this book: Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist: Unlocking the Secrets of the Last Supper

I would say that one religion accepts the fact and the other does not, ultimately you cannot say those collective people have done necessarily good things for other people in fact a lot of what they're doing is hurting people. God in his infinite mercy is Jewish and became Jewish to fulfill the prophecy, this is actually one of the conversations that I would like to have with God. I would say the people you know of the past are not the same of these people of the present these are two distinct different ideologies that form a collective identity. Nothing is technically wrong with this explanation, but it’s the typically wrong framing a convert-seeking religion would impose on a system that is not concerned with conversion. When you grasp this you realize it’s apples and oranges. Rabbinic Judaism is not concerned with the things Christianity is at the deeper theological levels. That’s the place to start. The purpose of these two systems are different. Christianity is for saving the world for eternity. Rabbinic Judaism exists to save the Jewish corporal people (successfully I might add) for the Eschaton.

The “Judaism” in the Bible is more accurate to be described as a whole other religion separate from Judaism. See it would be better to call it “The religion of the Hebrews” or “Hebrew(ism)”. Judaism didn’t begin until the 2nd century and it is more commonly referred as “Rabbinical Judaism” and the main crux of their religion is the section of Jesus Christ as the messiah. That is ENTIRELY different from the religion of the Hebrews before Christ which was all about the coming Christ. Then when Christ came and died from our sins then rose from the dead and ascended to heaven, it was then where the religion of the Hebrews became Christianity. Christ fulfilled the old covenant and found a new covenant and created the Catholic Church. Hebrews became Christians, those that rejected Christ became Jews. It’s really that simple once your follow history on a timelines 😂

Imo, today's "Judaism" is false in the sense that it is *NO LONGER* the same religion they practiced back in the days before the fall of Jerusalem in 70 A.D.. They no longer have a temple for sacrifices, therefore cannot even practice their faith anymore. Whatever came later was the product of the priests and pharisees who rejected the Messiah. My guess is that they had to come-up with something different to save face... a bit like the protestants who lost the priesthood in their schism, now having to save face by inventing "faith alone" and "bible alone", coming up with an entirely new religion solely because they disagreed with God's reality. The Pharisees rejected the Messiah and created a new religion while still claiming to rely on scripture. The Protestants rejected His Church and created a new religion while still claiming to rely on scripture. Both groups will not be saved by the means of their "new religions". They both have to return to the Messiah/Christ in order to be saved. Catholicism (The Church) is a continuation of ACTUAL Judaism, updated by Christ in 33 A.D., therefore is not subject to any "false" religions that came up later-on.

It would seem to me that your portrayal both of "Judaism" and of "Christianity" fails to grasp the essence of any true religion through the vague and inconsistent use of these terms, for example this video does not stand this litmus test: "Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place." (Matthew 5: 17-18) Or again, St Paul writes in Romans 11: "I ask, then, has God rejected his people? Of course not! For I too am an Israelite... God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew... Hence I ask, did they stumble so as to fall? Of course not! But through their transgression salvation has come to the Gentiles, so as to make them jealous. Now if their transgression is enrichment for the world, and if their diminished number is enrichment for the Gentiles, how much more their full number. Now I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I glory in my ministry in order to make my race jealous and thus save some of them. For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead? If the firstfruits are holy, so is the whole batch of dough; and if the root is holy, so are the branches. But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, a wild olive shoot, were grafted in their place and have come to share in the rich root of the olive tree, do not boast against the branches. If you do boast, consider that you do not support the root; the root supports you. Indeed you will say, "Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in." That is so. They were broken off because of unbelief, but you are there because of faith. So do not become haughty, but stand in awe. For if God did not spare the natural branches, perhaps he will not spare you either. See, then, the kindness and severity of God: severity toward those who fell, but God's kindness to you, provided you remain in his kindness; otherwise you too will be cut off. And they also, if they do not remain in unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again. For if you were cut from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated one, how much more will they who belong to it by nature be grafted back into their own olive tree. I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers, so that you will not become wise in your own estimation: a hardening has come upon Israel in part, until the full number of the Gentiles comes in, and thus all Israel will be saved, as it is written: "The deliverer will come out of Zion, he will turn away godlessness from Jacob; and this is my covenant with them when I take away their sins." In respect to the gospel, they are enemies on your account; but in respect to election, they are beloved because of the patriarchs. For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable. Just as you once disobeyed God but have now received mercy because of their disobedience, so they have now disobeyed in order that, by virtue of the mercy shown to you, they too may now receive mercy. For God delivered all to disobedience, that he might have mercy upon all. Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How inscrutable are his judgments and how unsearchable his ways! "For who has known the mind of the Lord or who has been his counselor?" "Or who has given him anything that he may be repaid?" For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen." Is this not a sounder teaching with more effective analogies?

Brian, some feedback on yet another exceedingly frustrating video. This video strikes me as propaganda, and not the good kind. You are manipulating your audience (go look at the comments) into thinking modern Judaism is somehow lesser, or invalid, or untruthful. This is gross. You have heavily implied this rather than stating it directly. But the message is clear. You've made some comments here that are either borderline malicious or grossly ignorant. Either way, you are implying throughout the video that you, Brian H, know what true Judaism is, and that the modern versions of the religion are somehow of lesser value. In ancient Palestine, Judaism was NOT a monolithic religion! It had all sorts of different manifestations. The one you are discussing here was Temple Judaism. But it was FAR from the only group in ancient Palestine. Judaism has evolved right from the start! You seem to be saying here in this video that a cutoff point existed in the past from which "real" Judaism ended. That is just preposterously false. The religion evolved! It had to, after the Temple was destroyed. But - and let's be clear here - it was evolving constantly through the years of its existence, from covenant days, through the Babylonian exile, to days of the Prophets, to the Temple days, through Apocalypticism, and then to rabbinic Judaism. And the many sects could not even agree with each other. But here comes Brian H to raise a giant strawman and make an argument based on what Brian H thinks is the genuine version of Judaism. Seriously, Brian? And it has always been a religions of disputation - lots of arguing over the meaning of things and the right way to live. As for those Daniel, prophecies, you have *quite conveniently* left out the raging controversy over the dating of the texts. Daniel was most likely much later than you state here, and it was probably written AFTER the events that it prophesied. This dating controversy should ALWAYS be grappled with in ANY discussion of Daniel. As for the Gospels, almost no one thinks the Gospel authors "invented" the connections to the OT. Rather, they "mined" the OT for passages that fit their particular narrative. They chose the "hits" and ignored the "misses." Maybe get some rabbis of different persuasions on to discuss these topics intelligently. And why would god give the people a first covenant that is incomplete, eventually outdated, and subsequent to being superseded?

It's not gross, it's true, and shame on you for trying to shame Brian. Furthermore, no one disputes there were multiple types of Jews. Jesus dealt with the Pharisees and the Sadducees regularly. He in His ministry (not to mention His prophets before Him) demonstrated which Jews were the proper Jews, and which were not. That is why the 10 tribes were destroyed after all. Why would God give a people that is incomplete and outdated? Because Man is sinful, and in spite of God giving them an everlasting covenant, they broke it. Now apologize to Brian and repent.

10:58 You may be thinking of the house of David. Bossuet in a universal history written for the Dauphin (Lewis of France, 1661 to 1711) affirmed that Jews couldn't find out who was of the house of David. The records were kept in the Temple and therefore lost at its destruction AD 70. I'd be happy to agree with him. There is however a way around it. Jesus had "brothers" and I am not into saying they descend physically from Mary, it's not about denying Her virginity, I tend to hold with Proto-Gospel, though what we have could have been altered, it's not inspired and divinely preserved canon. St. Joseph was a widower and the brethren come from his first wife. But the point is, all of them were of the tribe of Judah, more than one of them eventually were Christians, and not all of them were celibates. One of them (or if you prefer, one of His cousins, as per St. Jerome's account) could have married someone _designated as_ Jesus' widow, and their first son could have counted within Judaism as His legal son. That's the _maximum_ of truth there _could_ be to recently surfacing insinuations like those of Teabing in a famous novel by Dan Brown (or infamous, unless you take it as a document of how gullible Sophie Neveu and Mr. Langdon were to believe Teabing's allegations). I had to confront them in their somewhat older form with Baigent for his novelistic stand-in Teabing, since I had class mates and home mates (I'm allergic to boarding school stories, that's why I haven't read even one Potter novel), and in particular one who was both, who were into esoterica and he was into Baigent. However, such a line would have started out among Christians as likely as among Jews. ANY line from ANY brother or cousin or third cousin of Our Lord would have initially had some kind of standing among Christians, and then Jews could have needed to attend to that line, not least if some of them then became Rabbinic Jews. "Desposynoi" doesn't have as dictionary definition what Teabing says, but it DOES mean "relatives of the Lord" and some such featured in early Church history _after_ AD 70. I'd be more attentive to Daniel's weeks and the very obvious fact that Bar Kokhba was _not_ the Messiah, even if they calculated the chronology fraudulently to fit the weeks to him (and that's why putting for instance Ramses II as the Pharao of the Exodus is a very liberal reading for a Christian, but nearly a literalistic one for Rabbinic Jews). Plus their claims that Jesus didn't create the peace or kingdom that was promised is answered in Palestinians: * remaining an extant population * reuniting Judah and Ephraim (see Acts 2 and Acts 8) * not being sovereign and therefore not holding standing armies. Another part of the peace prophecies was God's word of peace going out to all nations, they interpret it as God's omnipotent word, and therefore an immediate peace, but it can refer to the Church preaching peace.
