Do you need to pull coax cabling in your new home? In this video, we explore that very question. When building a home, sometimes the pretty stuff is easier to decide on. It is the behind the scenes technology that is tougher... like what cabling do you need?
In this video, we talk about how you can decide which types of low voltage cabling you will need in your home. From Coax, to Cat6, Cat6A and even Cat7. Learn our thoughts as you move to the wiring stage of your home.

I am in the process of having a custom home built, i informed my builder that i would be having the house future proofed and run cat6 and coax throughout the home. They asked if the electrician was doing it. When I informed them that i would be doing it myself. They initially balked at that. They said it should be installed by a qualified person. Im a former IT guy... Blew my mind. Told them that it was happening anyway. And ended up running 3500 feet. 24 drops and 5 cams..

That’s awesome. You’re doing it right!!! What kind of network are you doing?

@@ethernetblueprint I'm going to install a ubiquity dream machine SE with two of the AP's a g4 pro doorbell, and 5 of the dome cams. One Nas with 24tb of storage for streaming the movie, music collection, and Xbox games. A rudimentary Smart home.

Very good video. I hope your design service does well. I invested into several WiFi certifications for design and security and I agree with you about the importance of properly setting up networks (WiFi and cabled). Look at the networking advancements over the last 30 years. Homes will last decades which means our network designs must look forward as well.

When I moved into our current home, it was an existing 1985 build on a crawl space so I had to retrofit data cable into the existing structure. The hybrid idea sound good until you realize, at least in my case that 2 spools of cable was enough to build out the entire deployment. That said, I opted for 2 spools of CAt-6a. It wouldn't make sense to purchase 2 additional spools of CAT-6 only to spend more money to save money. The 2 spools of CAT-6a were sufficient to get wired data jacks to all desired locations.

Thank you for all you information. I am building a house now. Unfortunately I found you videos after coaxial cable had been run to the tv. I now have to go and run the cat 6 cable myself to where I want to put my head in at. I had told my electrician 6 months ago before he started I wanted the Ethernet ran for the tvs he told me no you want coaxial. I did not know then what I have learned from you now. Needless to say I am kicking my own butt. Sure wish I would have found your videos sooner.

Sorry that happened. Will you be able to get cat6 to each one then?

Interesting discussion about Cat6 versus Cat6a. There is some nuance into the information that you share BUT I would never recommend Cat7 due to the lack of being part of the official standard. Cat 8 is the standard after Cat6a standard wise. Everything ultimately is debatable so I will just leave it at that. Cheers and thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Thanks for weighing in. I agree, it’s all debatable.

What are your thoughts on CAT 5e? We just build a new build and the builder would not allow me to upgrade to CAT 6 which I was willing to pay the extra cost. So, I was stuck with only 5e. My concern was that I wanted to futureproof my house as I plan to live here for as long as possible. Our needs are average Internet use, streaming TV, online games, basic Internet use.

That sucks about the builder. They can be a. It short sided about this stuff. You should be fine with Cat5 though. 1Gb is plenty fast, especially for typical internet usage. Did you at least get to put hard lines where you wanted them?

@@ethernetblueprint Yes, every room has at least one ethernet port and I have one also in the ceiling for a future AP. It is near the middle of the house. I wish I would have put two future AP outlets; one in the front and back of the house. Square footage of house is 1900sqft. Yeah, I don't think it will be that big of a deal, most of my runs are well below 100ft or whenever the signal starts to deteriorate.

I wish more builders, especially custom home builders would pay more attention to the home networking, especially being now 2023 and internet service providers are now reaching one two and five gigabit internet speeds. I always get a kick when they just say well "Aren't you just going to do Wi-Fi?" and I'm like no😅.

I completely agree. That’s why I think it’s important for the homeowner to be educated about this stuff so they can challenge their builder in these areas and not just except what’s given to them. Now we’ve talked to some pretty cool builders that “get it” but there are lots who don’t.

Coax is cheap, two runs to each room even if there capped off for several years. It will be worth it’s weight in gold if that one time you need it and it’s ready to go.

Do not remove the coaxial cable! Build a MoCA network instead!
