I thought about doing that, but I don't think anyone would want to bring me on board for an apprenticeship if I'm not committing long-term to the trade. I'm going to college to do something else, but I thought it would be nice to get trained in a trade as a backup or just to have something more valuable to do than janitorial work as I get through college.

@ruleaus7664 I’m not sure where you are located but if you have even reasonable physical and cognitive abilities you can start working trades. Apprenticeship seems more formal than is necessary- you can just get a job as a helper and pick up what you can. I remodel during the day and read Russell in the evenings. I’m just saying it’s not an either or situation. That’s a very limiting outlook

How poor are you? I have been living in crippling poverty my whole life. I am about to finish my associate's degree with 90% of it paid for by the government. They will give (I think) a maximum of 5 grand a semester depending on how bad things are up to about 50 grand overall. Since I can crash in my mom's house, they have been covering my classes and giving me bonus money for books as well as supplies. For example, they are going to give me just over $1,800 for my summer classes since I am take at least 7 credits this summer. The classes alone are $770 and the rest of the money will go towards my regular costs. I am six classes away from my associate's degree and I only paid for the first semester because I couldn't get the documents right. They don't give a lot of money but it covers up to the associate's degree and gives a "discount" to the university.

It depends. Find a useful career path. Do not blow tuition money or take out student loans on worthless degrees like gender studies, fine arts, etc. If a four year degree is not for you then go to vocational school to learn a trade (electrician, welder, auto mechanic, nursing, etc.) I find that trade school is cheaper and takes less time than a university. Plus you get hands on experience and get better pay. Liberal arts has majors that you can learn as a hobby like history, writing, art, etc. Like Dave Ramsey always says: "You need to have a degree or trade that will generate an income." I hear stories about students pursuing worthless degrees that they could have learned as a hobby and rack up thousands of dollars in student loan debt and their degrees just do not pay the bills.

I studied Philosophy, ( the theory of everything), and I grew as a person like never before. I can't recommend it highly enough. Doesn't matter what age you are, it's a great experience. The Sorcerer talks a lot in terms of enhanced job prospects, and of course that's absolutely right, but for me, the aspect of personal development was the greatest advantage. That, and the inner confidence that comes from knowing that I achieved a Masters degree, of which I am very proud. I worked and studied at the same time btw and it wasn't exactly a piece of cake but it was certainly worth it to have been lucky enough to hear some great teachers talking about fascinating themes. In the 1950's the baby boom caused schools to be flooded with kids. The grade schools started hiring 19 year-old teenagers to become teachers. Baby Boomers would have future generations to think they had a great education; Boomer has a poor education. After graduating high school, Boomers got low wage jobs they were able to buy a house, raise 5 kids on, buy a new car, take a 2 week vacation, and get a pension. Today people are expected to have a masters degree with 5 years experience to get a low paying entry level job that will only pay for an apartment. If people on a single income today have kids, they'll need food stamps. This economy today is horrible compared to 70 years ago. I know this from personal experience. My uncle worked at VONS as a meat cutter and his wife did part time work at Wendy's. They own a $800,000 house near the beach in southern California. My grandparents moved to California in 1949. They bought a house on their low wage job that today is worth $1,000,000. My grandfather was working as a SMOG Tech(pays 50% more than minimum wage) and my grandmother worked as a bank teller(pays a little more than minimum wage). If people go to college today I'd say go to community college and get a trade skill such as welder, mechanic, construction, water treatment, and nursing. Getting a masters degree today is too risky of an investment.

@sicko_the_ew 4 месяца назад
Is it worth learning how to *think* ? I think that should be the essence of the EDUCATION part of "getting an education". ("Getting an education" isn't really about this. People generally feel like they think just fine, and don't need improving, and that the only obstacle between them and their material objectives is some or other certificate. So they set the goal of getting the certificate by whatever means. Is there an easy credit you can take? Take it. Can you gain a few points by spotting old exam questions? Spot. And in some courses you'll hear things like the idea that any effort beyond what it takes to just pass is wasted effort. Nobody cares what your grades are in a job interview. They just want to see the certificate, and evaluate the things that matter to them.) So "getting an education" is not really about education - or learning how to think. That can happen by accident as a consequence of challenges set by a curriculum, but it's not a highly valued thing in this world. As soon as you make "getting an education" all about getting to be as educated as you can, college can be a very effective way of helping you keep on course with that. You can do it all with books and courses, but you at least complete a certain bare minimum number of thinking tasks to some standard if you go to college and pass. The tasks aren't the education, but they help you stay on course to something close enough to an education to be worthwhile to you through the years that follow. (And I think it also helps make most people inquisitive about matters that require thought, or more demanding kinds of thinking than the day to day does.) Think of college as The Easy Way, then. You can get the rudiments of the lifetime of education that will follow this, there, reasonably quickly.

@galek75, I was gently offering a counter argument. I like the math wizard, but this one suggestion I cannot get behind. Most people go to college to get a job, and some majors make it easier to find work than others. With the high cost of education, I do not agree with his advice.

I remember tennis player Nadal spoke the same thing. I am not exactly sure but he spoke something close to this. I saw one news item in which he was present in a convocation ceremony. He spoke about importance of education. The major problem is people use examples like billgates and promote wrong ideas. In Europe countries like England , france, Germany dominated the world mainly because of superior education. People are conscious about the importance of education in these countries.

My wife is in her junior year and has already been able to secure a government job with great benefits that makes the same hourly i do driving. Everything you said is spot on it really isnt that expensive its doable were both above a 3.8 gpa with no loans and im holding down 98 percent in calc 2 with just my final left. I will say my teachers have been awesome, harsh but fair and reasonable if youre not jerking them around. The confidence college has given me to do things i thought were out of my capcity is already worth something. I appreciate what you do and the company you give while i slug it out

I'm back in school after 17 years, getting a STEM degree. Financial aid is covering most of it. There's actually quite a bit of help available, you just have to be proactive and do the work to access the programs. Also it's really important to go to a school that's REGIONALLY accredited, NOT national. I'm not even sure you can get government financial aid for a nationally accredited for-profit school, but maybe. Anyway, the point being, nationally accredited schools are straight garbage because most institutions and businesses don't recognize the degrees they give you because the standards aren't up to par. That's important to remember so you're not wasting time and money. There's a lot of online schools that are scams, so make sure you verify regional accreditation

Most of the time in my country 5/6 of the courses are in your major subject in your university bachelor's degree. The rest you can also take courses in your major with, or do whatever you want with (take courses in whatever subject, do an internship, etc.). For me 12 years elementary to high school was really enough broadening...

The discussion about college and university degrees is a bit more complex and involves more than just education. People can be educated without degrees and be more competent than people with (certain) degrees. I think that’s a far bigger problem than people care to bring up in these discussions.

Here in Greece degrees are more special. We may take some irrelevant classes but its only optional. But all university is free, so that's the best part. A lot of times degrees come with a specialization. Like in physics in Athens, you have to choose if you want to specialize in astronomy/astrophysics, nuclear/particle, condensed matter, meteorology or electrical. Other universities may offer other specialities

I think people respect people with a college education more. A college in my town will pay x amount of the tuition depending on the person's GPA. Get a GPA of 4, and the college pays up to 20 000 or 24 000. I think that is very nearly all the tuition for one year. A college I was looking at for online BS in middle school education with specialization in math costs about 53 000 per year by my calculations. Another college in the state that offers online BS in education with a specialization told me the cost for the entire program was 24 000. That was great and I was going to apply. But then I couldn't find the math for the specialization. The person on the phone told me they'd turn the math specialization on later after I applied. Sorry for rambling. I also read on a Federal loans that it possible to get the tuition paid if someone studies to teach in a subject that has a shortage of teachers or a STEM subject such as math.

Is it worth going to college? Well, is a High School education really enough? For a lot of people, it's four years too many - but that's about schooling, not education. The bedrock of American educational tradition - which is different from every other country on earth, even Canada - is "American Liberal Arts" - "liberal" here means Free, as in Liberty. We said that a self-governing, democratic society requires a certain amount of education to succeed. And we linked that vocation of freedom to education. And we said that every community will organize its education as best it sees fit. Is it worth it? Is freedom worth the bother? Well, in the course of human history, many have struggled for it and few have attained it.

The real world value post college of that degree depends on the field and degree itself. So many are worthless or you will spend x amount of years paying it back which might be worth it. I just think that's an important asterisk when it comes to college so people aren't disappointed when they realize their salary or if they can even get a job in the field they chose.

@TheMathSorcerer You are equating “education” to “going to college”. I believe that college is not the only place where one can get an education. We should begin by defining what we mean by “education”. Vocational or trade school can provide the skills to earn a comfortable living; everything else can be learned from reading, traveling, and life experiences.

I have a high skill job with no college undergraduate degree. I am a self learner, am able to explain things and show my skills in interviews and on the job. Books are abundant, the internet is vast, and with AI, the sky is the limit with information overload. If someone is determined enough, they can do well for themselves without a degree. It is only one of the ways in which to do well in life. Like The Math Sorcerer said, for someone without any skills or job history, college is a great way to get your foot in the door at a company.

I got my first jobs on Craigslist at the time, then from there, was recruited for every position after that. You should be willing to work almost any job related to software development, anything is better than nothing. Don’t expect top pay either. It took me a good 4-5 years before I started getting paid what I’m worth. I think you're behind the times a bit. Getting "any kind of degree" used to work several years ago, but no longer. That's not the case now because employers are on to the scam of junk majors that mostly indoctrinate to the point that real education is just incidental. Majors like gender studies, ethnic studies, art history and the history of North African poetry, etc. will not get you a decent job and, in fact, will put you behind most high school graduates. I recommend you read "The College Scam" by Charlie Kirk to get up to speed with the reality of college education in the United States.

School was a whole lot of working alone on w/e Roman Republican maritime logistics in Asia Minor, or neurological basis of PTSD-- It was worth it, because the secondary and tertiary skills saw use in life. Spoken languages, ability to write very fluently, knowing computers... It's just not the result of college curriculum, which is an irony of its own. Would I for one have learned these skills outside of which?
