@@TwoGuyzTech quite a lot of blu ray discs don't have Atmos. As Atmos wasn't around when blu ray first released in 2006. But there's literally several hundreds of blu rays released in the last 5 or so years that do have Atmos. The first Atmos mix on blu ray was in way back in 2014. Some studios save the Atmos mix for the 4K blu ray disc, it just depends on the studio. Plus some catalogue titles don't even bother get remixed to Atmos.

I think ATMOS is worth it, but the correct speaker placement is absolutely key as to whether you'll hear it correctly or not. In my opinion on wall speakers don't really work, they won't get the sounds above your head, you need in ceiling or ceiling mounted speakers at the 45 degree Dolby spec to hear it as it was intended.

From what I understand, the main differential of Dolby Atmos is the effect of sound bounce on the ceiling. If we put the speakers on the ceiling, wouldn't we lose the sense of Dolby Atmos?

Recently installed 2 atmos speakers. Going from 5.1 to 5.1.2 bc my reciever is only a 7.1. And omg its amazing. Angled speakers and perfect placement. The atmos tracks sound insane. Also I put in an old saving private ryan dvd, and it still played audio out of them. Not sure if its mirroring the LR channels but omg the sound was so much bigger with the two overhead speakers. *also this is installed in my basment and my dropped ceiling height is 6'9" with the two speakers positioned slightly forward of the seating position. Because of that it sounds like I have a "Wall of Sound"

If your atmos speakers are playing audio with non atmos soundtracks, it means you have one of the many additional surround modes switched on which utilises upmixing (Dolby surround upmixer, Auro, DTS:X). What is your AVR? on my marantz the main way to change mode is via the game/movie/music/pure buttons.

DTS-X Mixes I've found are consistently higher quality in my experience with more thought out mixes. Atmos can be great as well but is saturated with lackluster mixes unfortunately being the market leader.

I think people need to have realistic expectations when it comes to Atmos. Most (4k) movies have bad Atmos tracks, or at least uninspiring ones. not much Atmos streaming content, and the audio is compressed. Atmos setup (with height speakers not that reflection stuff) is worth it for physical media. John Wick, blade runner, LoTR, Top Gun Maverick sound great, but it can be a big investment for a handful of movies . I reused a set of satellite speakers i found lying around as my height speakers. For how infrequent the height channels are used i don't see a need to go crazy w expensive height speakers. I can always upgrade later if need be. I started with 5.1 and ended up with 7.2.4. i would invest in dual subs (and an AVR with independent subwoofer outs) first or at the same time as setting up Atmos

Atmos is totally worth it. I have a 7.2.4 & that overhead sound is so nice. John Wick movies, Star Wars & Superman movies OMG. Next up in 2 weeks is 7.2.6. I have 6 Klipsch R41s. 100 watts is fine for Dolby Atmos

I just added a pair of RP-500SAs to my front wall to give me a 7.1.2 system using Klipsch for the front and Polk satellites for the back (which I'd like to upgrade at some point). I have the Star Wars Blu-ray 6-movie collection and neither of them have Atmos :( The 5th Element and Apocalypse Now sound good, though and I'm getting Ready Player One next week. Can't wait. I wonder if I can use one of the sound modes in my Denon 4700 to up-mix Atmos channels.

Cool I just ordered 4 Klipsch CDT-5800C II's in ceiling speakers for the four Atmos channels. I was going to go with wall mounted RP-500SA II's but decided it would be easier to mount the ceiling speakers rather than hanging the later speakers on the wall. I am hoping that the sound will be better too. As for what I'm driving them with it's is a Yamaha RX-A8A. Soon I will be upgrading with a 3 channel amp to drive the front and center speakers and that will leave plenty of headroom I'm hoping for the remaining 8 channels.

Sometimes Atmos works and sometimes it don't. I've always had rear in-ceiling speakers for rear surround So switching from 5.1 to 3.1.2 for Atmos is not all that impressive to me. Atmos would probably work better if I use physical media, but I don't waste my time with physical media these days as when I watch a movie one time I usually never watch it again.

The thing is there are no much movies with atmos and even if there is, then hardly a 10 to 15 minutes of atmos sound is added, there are only some movies which are mixed properly for atmos so as of now spending on atmos is not worth it, better wait for an year or two

Who would you recommend for installing such a sound system, atmos with the above head speaker installation done right and done professionally with the right angles and such. I do not have confidence in knowing I installed it right and would rather pay a professional. Is there a nation wide company with such a service? My go to is Best Buy but I’m not sure geek squad would know this stuff. My experience with them is rather basic as best.

@@richperez2168 Regular blue ray movies have Atmos as well. I have Mad max Fury road on regular blue ray and it's stamped with Atmos logo as well as my Onkyo Rz820 shows Atmos is active. There are as many regular blue ray movies with Atmos as there are 4k uhd disc.

There's a reason why no serious company offers an Atmos speaker in any of their serious audiophile grade speaker line ups. Eventually Perlisten will so that folks with 100 million in the bank can have matching ceiling speakers. I have 2 5.1 living room style theaters and I'd never consider Atmos. I think it's way too complicated for the average person and hence why soundbars are replacing home theaters. It's also what has contributed to the insane cost of some AV receivers and speakers. Good luck buying a Marantz SR8015 and B&W 702 S3s which are the new models of one of my systems. They cost $20,000 now... In the 5.1 days, I could enjoy similar sound for a fraction as it was 1/2-1/3 the price 10 years ago. Atmos is to be avoided at all costs. You gain so little in so few movies and moments, it's not even worth talking about. If anything needs to come back, it's 3d for TVs. That does make a difference and it applies to the entire movie. One is game changer, the other is a wallet changer.

Perlisten are releasing a Atmos ceiling speaker in the near future, but it won't won't be matching ceiling speakers. as it's physically impossible for any ceiling speakers to match a much bigger floorstander speaker like the Perlisten S7t! The only proper matching will be the DPC-Array ie the tweeter & 2 mids. It's not going to have the 4 woofers or the bass reflex slot of the Perlisten S7t. Perlisten is expensive but it's not millionaire expensive. £16,000 for a pair of top line Perlisten S7t floorstanders. Not cheap but plenty of regular not rich people blow that money in a year combined on holidays, cars, nights out etc. I myself also have a 5.1 set-up like you, for my particular room circumstances. But saying Atmos is bad is incorrect, there's some good Atmos mixes on disc. Plus you need to set up position Atmos ceiling speaker's correctly to get the best out of it. Home Theater Gurus is a good source for doing Atmos correctly. As for 3D in its current state agree to disagree! 3D movies in the cinema and at houses wearing the glasses makes me dizzy disoriented. Happens to a lot of people, it's the same with 3D gaming headsets. But I'm actually all for real 3D aka Holographic television's without the need for glasses. Looking Glass have some decent ones, but realistically it won't be until 50 years or so until the technology is there. To look at the screen from any angle with a Holographic movie and it looks almost like a person, object etc in real life.

@@C--A well, you won’t be buying just a pair of S7ts right? You need the center and I would venture at least 4 surrounds. So you’re looking at $30k just for speakers. Clearly you will want the best electronics to go with that especially the LR so separates and very likely with additional separate amplification for the LR. You also need haute couture cabinets to house the double, triple beasts unless it’s a dedicated home theater in which case it’s several times more expensive as a home theater contractor is involved. I see your point, I see high school teachers with $50k pickup trucks…. I’m not saying Atmos is worse than 5.1. What I’m saying is that it’s akin to adding 8 cylinders to a car that’s already quick with 8 cylinders. Why stick 8 cylinders in the passenger seat or between the seats unless it’s a dedicated home theater where looks don’t matter as walls are dark to begin with. You are going to destroy your living space and spend money for next to nothing in terms of return. As for 3d, you’re unlucky that it makes you dizzy. The active glasses were horrible and actually provided a much worse experience despite their double resolution. I agree, it wasn’t as comfortable but the trade-off was almost always worth it. Some movies are completely different beasts in 2d. We watched Rise of Skywalker in 2d at the theaters and I bought the 3d version, We hated the 2d movie so much that we didn’t watch the 3d for a few years. We popped it in and waited to see how bad it would be. At the end of the movie, we were thinking “was that the same movie? Wait, it was actually watchable and dare we say entertaining…”. We were all stunned! My son was particularly conflicted as he considered it one of the worst movies of all time. Apparently, No Time To Die was stupendous in 3d.

Yes I still don't understand to price gap between Yamaha RX-V679 and over (7.1) and their new models A-4$digits. I managed to grab a second hand Pioneer LX V303 which is a 9.2 with atmos (7.2.2 or 5.1.4). Its initial price was 600$. Why the hell I would put 2K$ more for 2 channels? That's insane, and for HDMI 2.1, meh.

I think it's a poor investment because Movies completely suck these days, I couldn't handle 5 seconds of some brain dead comic book movie. Comics were lame when I was a kid, and the writing hasn't changed. However, I would like to listen to Pet Sounds on Atmos.
