It is true I highlighted some of the best examples of Atmos. My point in doing so was to point out how good Atmos can be when done right. The original poster (who I am responding to in this video) watched one movie and concluded the entire Atmos format is worthless. My position is that Atmos is not worthless because here are some amazing examples of how good Atmos can be when done correctly. Hopefully this clarification is helpful. Thanks for watching!
Yes many movies claim to have ATMOS but the mix is terrible. That's when Auro3d can help with bad known poor mixes. If its good then use the ATMOS setting but for poor ATMOS it's good to use AURO3D (Denon/Marantz models)
You should have used Ghosbusters Afterlife example. There's only so many time we can watch the top Atmos movies. My best movies are actually Auro 3D movies which beats most Atmos movies. Spiderman Homecoming Auro 3D is in 11.1 with heights.
@@pinchopaxtonsgreatestminds9591 I made a follow-up video where I tested the Height channel output for Ghostbusters: Afterlife ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MUoavozCNks.html
Be the man you want other men to be. That’s what you demonstrated here. You observed a criticism, didn’t react, but acted. You chose to consciously get curious, explore, propose a concept, back up the proposal with YOUR personal direct experience with wronging the other person, then offer a debrief, and finally offer a hand to the person to open and explore alternatives without using absolutes. Thank you
Ready Player One, speacially the race scene, is probably the greatest atmos mix available today. However, I think it is the exception. Most atmos mixes are very poor.
Ready Player One really showcases the potential and capabilities of Dolby Atmos. I hope to see many more movies in the future take advantage of this technology.
@@josematias5142 yeah it would be better explanation. In terms of recommendation, you don't buy a film just "because" it has a decent sound track or technology included. How many of you bought enhanced CD for this reason an not audio listenning? It's the kind of thing which kills a technology, like 3D, 1 good movie for a shitton of other bad experiences.
Your selections are more the exceptions that the rule so I agree with the AVS Forum member. I've been a member of AVS since 2000. I also have a dedicated front projection home theater with a 7.2.4 Atmos set up and stadium seating. Its not the technology, its the application. I have an Atmos demo disc and it really demonstrates what a properly mixed Atmos system can do. I just feel studios don't do much past 5.1 for non-blockbuster movies. Even for Blockbusters, there is rarely anything in the Atmos heights. Its a real shame!
Exactly my thought. The main point here is that most Atmos mixes have very little active time throughout the movie. Showcasing the good mixes is obviously not a reply to the question raised. More interesting would be to compare for example the active time for the atmos channels compared to the bedlayer channels (excluding the center channel) for all the atmos mixes on a selection of streaming services. Or maybe just Disney+ or your streaming service of choice. (obviously it would be even better to compare blurays but I figured a streaming service like Disney+ would be better because it would set some sort of "scope" to the tests.
@@Olofberglund I'm not sure Atmos was meant to have 100% output over the whole of every scene. All three examples were good sounding Atmos. Wonder if this issue (lack of sound) carries over into music audio Atmos. I couldn't guess if all surround sound is evenly applied, all engineers don't think alike. Betting there is no consistency (or standard) movie to movie audio and music to music audio for Atmos either.
The entire video was to debunk a comment that was "too rash and short to conclusion" by countering with the opposite opinion that was also too rash and short to conclusion. Nothing is wrong with the equipment like the decoding, wiring, levels, etc if the person is getting repeatable output for testing. The comment being tested here is not that Atmos is not working, but that there is not enough content "to be worth it". This is a very well known issue that so many mixes have very small amounts of Atmos content. In this video to counter, you used some of the BEST known mixes that everybody plays and recommends in the "What is the best Atmos movies to show off my system" threads. For any testing first and foremost you should have included the exact same content that was being previously discussed. That particular movie is actually supposed to be good for Atmos, though I have not watched it myself. But trust me, there are so so so many movies that are "Atmos" with minimal to no content on the height channels, missing scenes to capitalize on it, just using basic sound effects or some music. Its been thoroughly tested by several and this fact remains true, there are multiple lazy mixes and terrible mixes and they in large outnumber the good mixes, that is why often for a bad mix movie some people actually upmix with DTS, Auro3D, etc to bring more content to the height channels than the default Atmos mix. I appreciate your time to make a video, but as a reviewer, IT Guy, etc. It was more upsetting to me to see someone try to debase a truthful topic in the position of an "expert" with bad testing and false understanding of the issue than it would have been to get a rash and short conclusion" from a viewer or writer. If we want to be the ones to share valid opinions and testing with the world, we need to do better than this.
I’m just a casual viewer and was curious what sound comes from my atmos speakers. I didn’t “debunk” the guy who wrote the post. I fully believe he’s not getting any sound from his speakers. I’m merely offering that his results are not indicative of everyone else’s results and there may be other factors at play. The conclusion I drew was that Atmos results can vary from system to system. As with any new content format or upgrade, it takes time for the available content to catch up to hardware adoption. As more people implement Atmos setups, the more incentivized the studios will be to create stellar Atmos mixes. I’m hoping that’s what happens. Thanks for watching!!
@@GeorgeTheaterAtHome Even though i like your video, I do agree with above poster, you should have included the Ghostbusters Afterlife sequences mentioned in the thread you started the video by reading from, just to show if you got same results as the dude on avsforum,or if his setup just doesnt work.
+Benny Puuduu I don’t own Ghostbusters but I’m considering getting so I can do a head to head comparison with that scene. For the purposes of this video, I wanted to provide a few examples of Atmos NOT being worthless. I felt it was unfortunate someone watched a scene from one movie and concluded “Atmos is worthless.”
I also agree with Vicious, and felt that way the entire video. I kept thinking, I hope he doesn't demo the top 3 reference tracks, and then you did exactly that. I know your intention wasn't to debunk that avs user but your counter was done in bad faith, if not, very bad optics. That would be like me arguing room treatment is an absolute must for good sound then proceeding to do my recordings in a shower to demonstrate my point. I applaud your efforts to make the video, but it is short sighted not to present the big picture. It would be really great and useful to do the same tests with poorly mixed atmos tracks. One that instantly comes to mind is Bumblebee. Remember that intro? Should sound amazing right? Not so much, it's mainly just the music score you hear up there. I like where you're going with the channel and hope to see more content. Maybe do a more in depth video on those unfamiliar subwoofers you use.
I received a lot of feedback requesting the atmos height channels from the Ghostbusters scene. So I made it! I hope I got the right scene, or else I’ll be making yet another video on this topic 😬 What sounds do you get from the Dolby Atmos Height channel track in Ghostbusters: Afterlife? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MUoavozCNks.html
@michaelmarquez6133 Auro 3D is another 3D audio format with bed layer, height layer and then an overhead layer called the voice of God Chanel. It's only available on a select group of AVR's and preamps
You played the top 3 movies known for their bluray Atmos tracks. So in this example you have not proven that Ghostbusters has or has not a bunk Atmos track. It was just 18 minutes of you showing off your system. There is a RU-vid channel dedicated to revealing the isolated Atmos tracks in movies and it does confirm that it’s mostly blank.
It’s true. I did play tracks with exceptional Atmos tracks. However, the post on the forum did not state the Atmos track for ghostbusters was terrible. Instead, they listened to the ghostbusters audio and concluded *atmos* is terrible. They listened to one audio track and concluded the entire format is worthless. I demonstrated the entire format is not worthless because there are some really excellent mixes out there. If you’re curious, I did a follow up video where I listened to the exact ghostbusters track they referenced and concluded there was more sound from the atmos speakers than they were hearing. You can check my channel if you would like to view that video. I believe there is/was something amiss with their setup.
You should have tested Ghost Busters Afterlife, not movies that have good Atmos tracks. Some movies say Atmos but it’s poorly implemented. You can’t say his experience is invalid when you don’t even test the movie he had an issue with.
Here’s a link to my video where I examine the Atmos sounds from Ghostbusters Afterlife. Also, the point I failed to sufficiently emphasize is that the guy didn’t claim the Atmos track of Ghostbusters sucked. Instead, he watched a single movie and concluded the entire Atmos sound format sucks. So I thought it would be valuable to show examples of the format sounding exceptional. Anyways, here’s the link to the Ghostbusters video. Are there any Dolby Atmos Height sounds in Ghostbusters: Afterlife? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MUoavozCNks.html
I found it really informative reading your comment section. I'm a mixing engineer who has had some mixing experience in Atmos - in an extremely well set up mixing theatre. Some people are saying well you only get a tiny portion of the film in Atmos or using those speakers - and I'd say yes that's true but your mixing decisions are based on a huge number of factors one of the most important being contrast. If everything is loud - nothing is loud. Equally if everything is everywhere all the time not only do you not have the wow factor for the big moments but it's actively distracting when you are watching simple dialogue scenes. There's no need to stick a ton of sound everywhere unless it's justified so naturally some films will have more Atmos than others. Having said that if there is any justification - any atall - to put immersive sound in I would absolutely take it. It's a hell of a lot of fun to mix. A lot of cinemas which have Atmos have it set up extremely poorly as well. I've never heard an Atmos mix in a cinema that does the system justice and I'm pretty sure that's down to cost saving and rooms that are too large for the mix to translate. I'd love to setup an Atmos home theatre and get into the nitty gritty of that to see what's the most effective in that listening environment. That would be really informative for me on what are the best mix decisions to make, and what to prioritise when delivering home Atmos. I'm willing to bet a lot of Atmos mixers have not heard an Atmos home theatre.
Wow! You have experience mixing in Atmos?! Movies, music? I have so many questions for you. Would love to chat if you’re interested. As for building a home Atmos theater, I would love to help you out. A home theater is pretty much the coolest thing, but I may be a bit biased 😅
I agree with this video. I also ran this test with movies, where i turn off my bed layer amp and just let the heights play (i.e. the only information playing is height channel signals), and some movies play a ton of audible height. But the distance between heights and bed layer can impact how audible the direction of the sound. I also agree with that uncompressed physical media is going to sound better. I think users also need to be mindful that some movies simply dont have a lot of height channel mixing (sometimes only 7.1) despite being labeled dolby atmos (i.e. they use atmos mixing, but no height mixing). Some netflix movies (black crab or encanto) have a ton of atmos and height movies now, totally immersive. I agree- types of speakers and adjusting levels of heights, using an amp are all a huge deal. All the points raised in video are huge.
I'm gonna give black crab a try today. I've been looking for good tests of my atmos setup. Hwq800b paired with 9500s for 7.1.4.. I'll try to let u know how it went
Switch your AVR to Auro 3D if possible instead of Atmos. It’s a game changer. I have 4 front and rear height channels about 3.5 feet above the front L and R and Rear L and R. Makes so much difference.
I had this exact same problem too. I found out that placing the 2 Atmos speakers in front, like he has, does not help the situation. All this does is give you a wall of sound. Place the 2 speakers to the sides of your seating position. After doing that go to: Amp Assign, Assign Mode, Top Middle. This will support Dolby Atmos and give you the bubble of sound you are looking for. Some other good Atmos movies are: Morbius Dune BladeRunner 2049 Gravity John Wick 1, 2 and 3 Alita Battle Angel
When only running 2 height channels they should be placed directly to the sides of the MLP on a wall aimed down to the MLP. Then select Surround Heights. With 4 height channels it would be front height and rear height.
I just purchased a Onkyo 5100 receiver with kef q150 for my left and right channel as well as my upper height channels and a kef C250 Center Channel. I have a Cambridge 14 inch subwoofer with a 250 watt amp and two Cambridge surround sound speakers. When the atmos track is engineered and mixed properly it's amazing otherwise I just get a lot of filler up there like I used to in my 7.1 setup overall I am quite pleased. I also bumped up my height speakers to + 10 to get more sound out of them
I totally agree with the the article. I think the information that the height channels produce is minimal, and sometimes I expect hearing more from movies
I had 7.2 system and added 4 inceiling speakers hoping it will add a whole new level of sound, so now with a well setup 7.2.4 in a 38 m2 room listening for 1 year or so, almost everyday i can say it all depends on the atmos mix ... IMO if you can spend the money and get good armos speakers 4 of them not 2, installed in a proper way you will love it, cheers
I can confirmed that DA is working even im using windows 11 and MPHC with DAHT . Bitstream and passthrough from my LG CX to HWQ800C +SWA9500S. All scenes in this video is exactly the same what i heard from the upfiring speaker of my soundbar.
I enjoyed your video… and made many great points! My room is a small living room in a small house… 12x12 ft. 9’ ceiling. I went from a 5.1 set up.. upgraded to denon 2800, for a 5.1.2 set up, with decent quality speakers. And absolutely source makes the difference. I have satellite tv… and Apple TV thru Mac mini. Apple TV is better than satellite.. and I know disks are better than Apple TV.. but with only another pair of on ceiling speakers, slightly larger sub, and new receiver, I’m blown away happy with my results.
I really liked this video and your theater!! The before pic of the basement reminds me of a lot of basements in townhomes that I’ve been looking at. But I especially liked is how you got everything to work and feel without spending tons of $$ and did most of it yourself!! I look forward to any updates you might do. This is the first video of yours I’ve seen. 🎉 Btw. I think it would be killer to see you add a couple diy monster subs to your setup! Like the gsg flat pack 18” or 24” subs! 🎉 keep up the good work! Thanks!
The biggest thing is his source like you mentioned at 8:00, ia the receiver seeing genuine Dolby atmos sound, or is his receiver converting it.... My receiver the pioneer elite shows me whether its seeing true dolby source or not. Its critical, netflix, Amazon prime and Disney plus streams in true Dolby Atmos if they show it in the audio of the movie.
Well I added 2, 6 ohm Atmos speakers to my onkyo receiver with an 85 inch Samsung 4k TV and a nero 150 watt per channel amp that puts out 150 watts per channel @ 8 ohm but I have 6 ohm speakers and at 6 ohm its probably like 180 watts per channel in my room. Before adding the atmos it sounded awesome since adding the atmos speakers now it sounds f--king awesome. I don't know what this guy did but I'm betting he dosen't have the levels turned up enough in his receiver menu. That's a very easy fix. I'm running yamaha 6 ohm speakers for everthing every speaker is 6 ohm and it's great. Another way he can tell is to listen to music and turn the setup to all channel stereo instead of atmos that way he'll know if hes all hooked up. Great video bro.
Another issue he admitted was he had them front facing as 5.1.2. I have same config but with svs prime elevations and also notice less immersion. Dolby I think recommends when you only have two to mount to either side of listening position. I couldnt in my case as there was no side wall to mount it on as I have my setup in an open room.
I just got some Klipsch Atmos modules a few days ago and my first movie was "bouncy-housed" watching The 5th Element in Blu-Ray. I fixed them to the front wall last night (above my mains because I can't install ceiling speakers) and will watch the 4K version of Apocalypse Now this weekend. I also just ordered a copy of Ready Player One and should get it in a week or two...can't wait! in the meantime I'll have to watch my copy of saving Private Ryan :) I have a 7.1.2 (Front Klipsch, back old Polk satellites) running off a Denon AVR-X4700 with my front mains bi-amped.
@@JONACAN They were pretty awesome...just wish I had two more for the back :). Anyways I've found that my Denon AVR has, since I installed the "heights" as it calls them, has automatically selected Neural:X in other movies that don't specifically say they were recorded in Atmos, and activated the speakers on it's own...kinda neat, I think. With my Klipsch SPL-120 (12") sub replacing the 10" Polk, I think I'll watch either Apollo XIII or Jurassic Park next.
The Disk needs to be configured to output audio "Bitstream". Using your "display info" on your AVR change modes until you see "Atmos" if it is supported. Had to jump through these hoops when trying to enable sound on my front wides. That channel only works on a few disks like Dune 2021, Blade Runner 2049. Higher end receivers can decode some sound for it using other disks, but currently the RMC-1 does not YET. I was thinking that this user may have his channel mis-configured to "reflective" atmos or front presence which works only with voices to spread them across screen. So many options to screw things up.
I wonder what was wrong with that guy's system. If his speakers were positioned wrong then the auto-calibration may have decided not to send them any information. But it could be a lot of things, right?
May have been mentioned but for Yamaha for example has to set to 'straight' to do ATMOS. Having it on Standard or Surround Decoder of some type ignores ATMOS metadata. Took me while to realise this, duh!
Hi, I'm curious about the location(eg. Either topfrontleft or tfright etc) of the speaker where you put your mic, and if you use preamp to that speaker.
Hi I use Yamaha rx-v583 with elac cinema 5, 2 Dolby enabled speakers (elac debut 2.0 a4.2) and an extra Polk audio down firing subwoofer i suffer the same problem that I don't feel that I'm getting any Dolby Atmos I know upward firing speakers don't make much Dolby Atmos feel that overhead speakers do but due to some restrictions i cannot install the overhead speakers can you please help me out with this I'll be grateful:)
Unless he had it setup in his menus as front heights instead of top middle. Then they may have only got Atmos objects that are positioned in the front height area. Whereas top middle would likely receive a LOT more content since there would be more objects placed directly overhead than up and forward. Also. Soundtrack specific. There are some surprisingly quiet heights on some Atmos content. American Sniper dust storm sequence comes to mind. There is much of the dust storm coming from the bed layer vs the heights. If you turn off The bed layer and listen to the ceiling alone in that scene - surprisingly they are mostly quiet. However. I agree with your general conclusion. Atmos and ceiling speakers placed ideally add soooo much to the experience!
If I heard that right that the two Atmos speakers were placed “behind” the TV and six feet up, that makes me question if during the test tone calibration the processor knew they were there and assumed little to no sound would go there since it’s technically out of range of where people would be sitting. In other words, if the mix was meant to hover above the audience in a particular place, I would assume the processor knows the Atmos speakers are not in an ideal location and decided I won’t send much sound to that area as it makes no sense to do so. Anyway, if I were to do an Atmos set-up (currently I run 7.1), I would attempt a 7.1.4 and those four Atmos speakers would all be hovering above the viewing area and not in the areas behind my mains and surrounds.
Very well explained. Just a question: sometimes the atmos speakers are overshadowed by the bed layer speakers and the bass, depending on the movies. How to deal with that? Maybe increase the trims by 1 or 2db for the atmos after calibrating all the speakers to 75db and running subs on 10db hot? 😊
You could slightly increase the levels on your Atmos channels. But more importantly would be to use the room correction program in your AVR to dial in the optimal levels for all your channels.
A fair demonstration would’ve been to showcase the same movie the plaintiff was complaining about. At the end of the day, it all comes down to how the movie was mixed back at the studio. If it’s a poor mix, then that’s when switching to upmixers come in to play. I prefer neural x then auro 3D second.

@@GeorgeTheaterAtHome it’s funny because after I had left a comment, I found that video lol. Keep up the good work, I always enjoy watching atmos related content. Consider me subscribed!
It appears to me that is speaker he tested maybe out of phase with the rest of the system. A easy way to test the phase is to remove the speaker covers where you can see the cone and place a 9-volt battery across the speaker terminal and watch which way the cone moves with reference to the polarity of the battery. Check each speaker in his system this way to see if the speaker cones move in the same direction with the + on the positive terminal. Maybe that speaker he tested was wired incorrectly at the factory.
I had the same issue but i find out that the speaker setup on the processor was setup to floor. He needs to setup his speakers to Floor and Height. I'm using a Marantz AV8802 processor . If the speaker setup is Floor, Atmos speakers will get muted.
I have a 9.2 6 in my 9' ceiling 261 sq ft livingroom. All 6 atmos are at near top (like 8'5"). Most atmos movies arent good. Oh man Godzilla King of the monsters is so awesome helicopters & Rodan flying all above & R.P 1 is 🔥
The movie he picked is probably an issue as well as of he only has 2 heights that's not real a correct ATMOS setup. Really need 4 minimum with 2 front heights and 2 rear or side heights to get the full effect. His amps were probably underpowered as well most likely. If he uses a known demo disc like you did and he still gets minimum or nothing from the heights it's his setup for sure
I haven't actually experienced Atmos yet and have always been a bit skeptical as to whether it really adds much. Based on your video and a few others however, maybe it offers more than I imagine. I do plan to build something for Atmos, I just haven't decided what. I'm probably going to start with something simple, maybe a simple 2-way sealed box. I have three seating rows but the back row is against the back wall so I think four Atmos will be plenty. The rear speakers are going to be right over the back row's head anyway. I recently cut the parts to build the rear speakers and hopefully will have them built and installed by the end of the year. I'm really not sure what the best approach is for the Atmos. Something with controlled dispersion making them more of a direct sound source or something making them more ambient. Any opinion on this? I need to figure out what I want to build so I can at least get started while I have some time off work. Starting Dec 4, 2023 I'm going to have about six weeks, after that it's a few days here, gone for weeks or months, a few days again, gone for weeks or months again...
I believe ATMOS is a brilliant idea. But in my movie room, i use a basic 5.1 system. Why ? Pretty much cost and the practical issues installing. I have high ceilings. Even the projector is in a table . If on ceiling I would have a very long pole or I'm going to exceed the maximum recommended angle.
I did. Here’s the link Are there any Dolby Atmos Height sounds in Ghostbusters: Afterlife? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MUoavozCNks.html
I have a Marantz AVR running a 5.1.4 set up. I have no eyesight. when I 1st started testing Atmos titles I was really confused I couldn't hear anything going up there. IN the end I turned down the ear level speakers. Honestly, even for the "good" titles, very little acgtually goes up there to make a difference. usually I find it's flybys, whipping overhead special effects, a bit of music. It's surprisingly silent. What makes it more confusing is that so many reviews tell you x y z titles have all this atmos going on. I think your eyes trick you into thinking things are over head when they're not. Of course because I'm blind, this doesn't happen to me, it either is or it is not. I will say that some AVs, depending what mode you have them set to, may send more of the 5.1 channels up to the atmos speakers as well, not sure what it was you were playing there, what you had your AV set to or what the input source was. Even if it was all true atmos though, I can confidently say that what you found there was the exception not the norm. I have well over 100 titles which I have tested and tuned my set up on extensively. All that being said, I remember 15 or 20 years ago when 5.1 was really starting to come into its own for the home user and you'd get reviews saying how mind blowing the sound was when in reality, not much happened behind you. So maybe it will just take another 10y or so for things to actually get good :)
This was a cool video but confused why you didn’t play the scene from Ghostbusters the guy was describing. Maybe that movie just doesn’t have much going on in the Atmos mix?

Thanks for this video while watching it I did a sound check on Vizio M5.1.2 soundbar and found it wasn't producing any audio so I had to check that the input was in the correct mode setting. I have Vizio 5.1.2 I keep my height speakers at the maximum setting. I love Dolby Atmos with a passion when watching UHD 4K movies. Yes it works as designed. However there is so much more about the commenter not getting Atmos. For TV owners the TV has to support Dolby Digital+ or Dolby TrueHD. It has to do with the audio pass through as well so it can send the signals to all the speakers. The worst thing about Dolby Atmos is the name and it's so over used that everyone now thinks it is its very own codex and can work just because every manufacturer has it on the label. It only works from the source from what the content is mastered on to the service or type of disk to your own audio equipment right down to the audio equipment settings. Only Dolby Digital, DD+, Dolby True HD are only real Audio Codexs.
I think you have to make sure that it's mixed in Atmos and even Streaming you would say their is a lot information coming from a movie with a Atmos disc and if you are not you should listen to his checklist

I think that he didn't set up his room acoustics set-up & he's drawing to much power from his front & needs to turn down all his other speakers untill he can clearly hear them. Finally slowly raise the other volumes till it's balanced.
I'm sure his set up is incorrect. Can I ask why you didn't play the scenes he was using as a truer comparison. I know you would of got better results but at least he would know what it should sound like.

I'm also experiencing little to no sound out of my atmos speakers also that I just got a couple of days ago and if you would wanna help me out I'd deeply appreciate it and everything I got is brand new and all the correct equipment needed to dolby atmos
You sure he wasn't just listening in 5.1 or 7.1 thinking it was Atmos? All the Atmos audio exists within 5.1 and 7.1 anyway including the overheads. It's only the receiver that decodes the overheads and positions the audio to them. Atmos is designed to very transparently downmix from 7.1.4 to stereo too.
@@GeorgeTheaterAtHome Sometimes it's not obvious what the output format should really be, especially from downloads, although as you demonstrate, in most Atmos movies, it would be very unusual for there to be no sound in the overheads at all, unless the movie has literally just been converted to Atmos from Surround with no Atmos editing. I have experimented with Atmos music from Tidal and that can be very light in the overheads, to the point you can literally pull the 5.1 out and it sounds so similar, the Atmos in it really isn't doing much, but that's music where often the idea is to keep it faithful to the original stereo and so there is very minimal heights included, sometimes none at all.

@@GeorgeTheaterAtHome that might be the case but the player has to be compatible with Atmos to send the signal so I'm getting your avr has made up virtual height channel sound and that's why loads of sound is coming from the single channel.
+Laurence M Fee the ps5 outputs an unfiltered and unprocessed signal and the processor receives the pure digital signal and decodes the atmos encoding in the audio signal. I assure you it is in fact the original atmos audio stream.
Great video, but I think it would’ve been a more accurate comparison if you had played the scene from Ghostbusters that he was talking about in his comments.
When you say “my setup is 7.2.4, so I have 4 atmos speakers”, it is not “correct”, because all the speakers are atmos. At least 11 speakers are playing your atmos. I just don’t know if the subs are a part of atmos or not. What I have understood is that atmos doesn’t send “pcm” sound to the speakers but sounds’ object to the atmos decoder/interpreter, which is your atmos AV amp (or integrated in it), and then your AV amp sends sound “pcm” waves accordingly to the right speakers in order to make you feel the 3D sound. So, regarding these explanations from Dolby themselves, it seems that all the speakers are in use.
You are technically correct. Atmos is an audio format, not a speaker or channel. However, in colloquial terms, people use the terms “Atmos” or “height channels” to describe the channels on the ceiling or above the bed layer. So while it’s not technically correct to call them Atmos speakers, everyone pretty well understands what is meant when that description is used. Thanks for watching!
Original atmos mastering is never indicated along with movies. There are older Dolby digital surrounds that gets converted to atmos. Which might not sound as good as original atmos mastered files. Sometimes producers cheap out on sound design. One cannot blame the technology for bad source files.
In general, or do you have a specific movie in mind? I made this video where we blind tested streaming vs disc ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-S9rRxOPZpIg.html
+@lamecasuelas2 I made a follow-up video and analyzed the scene from the specific movie he criticized Are there any Dolby Atmos Height sounds in Ghostbusters: Afterlife? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MUoavozCNks.html
I think this has nothing to do with cables, speakers, processors or almost even placement. Instead I think his problem stems from initial setup. That’s the most likely reason he’s not getting sound from his Atmos.
ATMOS depends so much on the placement of the height channels, if you don't have them at that 45 degree angle, you'll have a very meh experience, people with them up on the wall above the LCR at 30 or even 25 degrees aren't experiencing ATMOS.
if you want to experience Atmos in its best way then just get a Smyth Realiser A16 and a good set of headphones... then you get to choose any format you want upto 24 different channels... and it emulates any speaker you want.... so you can emulate a atmos setup that would cost you $500K as an example...
What people really need to do when making claims is to be very specific. It's not just what system they have and the set up but what content type they used. What this person needs to understand is Dolby Atmos Dolby Atmos is not an audio format. The content needs Dolby True HD or DTS:X. If he first doesn't have this first you never get Atmos. The streaming provider had to deliver audio in this format. A standard DVD isn't going to provide it either. If your A/V hardware is so old you need one that says Dolby Digital Plus or Dolby TrueHD. Your audio settings must be enabled to have these all turned on.
to be fair, and this is from personal experience ...it really depends on the TYPE of movie that is being played.. ive had a few movies that where marked as ATMOS while streaming but i barely ever heard my height channels because of the genre of movie... however action movies they are very audible. i am going to assume this person was watching something like a drama or certain animated movies with atmos where you rarely hear the height channels..

For me: Sony Dh790str on Auto decoding format mode…no other modes
There's loads of people like this in atmos forums, they just don't understand how it works, I've got a 5.1.2 but I use middle heights and it sounds good but it's not atmos, you need a minimum of 4 heights for it to work properly and to get "the bubble" 6ft above the front speakers as well 😂 deffo set up wrong
In his post he shared he put his ear right up to the speaker and heard almost nothing. I wish I could seen his setup and the settings for his AVR. Would have been interesting to get more info. Thanks for watching!
Why didn't you use the movie he mentioned? besides that he the writer is right atmos is some what not worth it if they are not using the height speakers enough in all movies with Atmos to justify the setup, I have the setup and barley turn it on when I watch content with the Atmos label on it because I already know it's a let down.
I agree with what the person on reddit or whichever forum he was on, have been watching videos of the people who calls themselves audiophiles for last 2 years now who has spend like half a million dollar on their systems, to show us the atmos content they have to goto just some 2 minutes of the content in the entire movie. The problem is not with the system but the people who mixes the sound in a movie, you buy a blueray discs worth couple of hundreds of dollar which have a tag saying atmos and what you get in the entire movie is a 2 to 5 minutes of atmos mixing, even you showed the clip of a movie for 2 minutes, where that was the only scene where you get atmos, rest of the movie there is nothing for atmos. So as of this date, dont spend money on atmos, its useless.
+@heavenlyxtacy my Atmos and surround speakers are producing sound thru almost the entirety of most Atmos movies I watch. It’s an immersive sound experience that is a major leap forward from what we’ve had previously (5.1, 7.1 etc)
A lot of people have a $500 receiver only two front height speakers and live in a living room in a bi-level with all open room they don't have all the money for four ceiling for atmosand all a dedicated home theater room
I was able to build out a 5.1.2 Atmos setup for under $700 total and I was blown away by the sound. We are so lucky to have these formats and equipment available. Thanks for watching! Budget Friendly Dolby Atmos Theater ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pdNzQCOq3SU.html
@@GeorgeTheaterAtHome great video well informative and good prices. If I was to put two over head speakers in my ceiling, would it be directly over my listening position?
Atmos in movies just keeps getting better. Dune 1 and 2, Bladerunner 2049, Furiosa, are all more recent examples. Twister in Atmos is a great remaster of the original. I think movie audio engineers are getting better and better at mixing in Atmos. I’m feeling very optimistic for the future of the format.
@@GeorgeTheaterAtHome thats good to hear. For me I don't really into action movies but I love movies with great scores like The Crown etc. Do you mind if I ask if I should get a 5.2.4 like you? I will have a cinema 40 as the received? sorry to bother
I think right now Atmos is worthless too. I setup my Atmos speakers just the same as this guy on the forums and I unplugged all of my speakers except the Atmos speaks. I was shocked at how little comes out of them. I watched actions scenes from about 10 different movies. I think if you are pro Atmos person right now you think you are hearing something that not there. It's not that Atmos is bad it's just that there is so little good content that it's not worth the price tag.
Have you had a chance to listen to music in Atmos? Apple Music is a great way to access it. I’ve found the music mixing engineers frequently include the Height channels on their mixes.
@@GeorgeTheaterAtHome So my Atmos in my home living room is temporary. It's mainly just a 5.1 with a Onkyo receiver and Elac speakers . But I did go out and get a Samsung Q930C witch is a Atmos 9.1.4. I'm not a Apple fan so I had to get Amazon Music. To be honest, I have not heard a lot of good Atmos mixes. Very few songs use the center channel and even the rear channels some time are not used much in Atmos songs. Two good Atmos songs that come to mind are Weezer - Island In The Sun the opening guitar rift is in the back right which is cool. Another is Pink Floyd - Time. All of the clocks at the start are playing unique clock sounds out of different speaks. When I did switch from Spotify to Amazon Music holy cow it made me want to cry listening to music in my living room. It sounded like I was listening to live music. I can't tell the difference in better sound quality on my Atmos soundbar, any of my headphones or car though. I prefer to watch movies, TV show and music on a older HDR LCD with nice 5.1 speakers over an OLED (which has crazy good HDR) with a Atmos soundbar. The better sound quality makes a bigger difference over the better HDR with an Atmos soundbar. Because of the size of the TV in my living room the OLED would be expansive so I have not upgraded yet. The Atmos soundbar and the Atmos experiments that I have done in my living room have not made me want to rush out and buy more speakers for my living room. I will also say the Atmos videos Dolby made sound amazing on my Atmos soundbar.
@@GeorgeTheaterAtHome I had a long post on here and I'm not sure where it went. That being said I moved my fire stick to listen to Amazon Atmos songs on my Samsung Atmos soundbar. I don't know who Billie Eilish sound engineer is but they deserve an Atmos sound engineering award.
Hate the premise of the video completely ignoring the fact that it depends on the movie mix. The guy you mentioned was talking about a specific movie, maybe you should have tried that one or most movies that simply DO NOT make good use of Atmos speakers even though they supposedly have Atmos mixes. Most movies will send info to the Atmos speakers incredibly sparingly. You can’t simply pick one movie and make broad statements about the state of Atmos. You must take the vast majority of content into consideration. When you do that I believe you would see that the state of Atmos is very poor as a whole. There of course are standout movies with great Atmos mixes but those are few and far between. Many who go through the trouble of upgrading receivers and then buying and installing height speakers are left feeling a bit cheated by the lack of use of Atmos speakers in any meaningful way in most movies. 1-2 min total of Atmos speaker use in major action blockbusters for example is just absurd.
I made a video for the movie the guy was complaining about Are there any Dolby Atmos Height sounds in Ghostbusters: Afterlife? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MUoavozCNks.html
Every movie is mixed different.........Atmos hasvits pro and cons.......dts hd master works with any configuration you have........ sometimes atmos is great and sometimes it sucks...... just depends on movie
