I think that everything that distracts us from our relationship with God is bad. Looking television, drinking alcohol, looking pornografical movies, driving to hard, eating to much, daydreaming etc. We must be awaken all day long for hearing what the Holy Spirit wants us to do. That isn't possible when your mind is in a state of distraction.

If drinking causes you to do something that doesn't glorify God, dont do it. If you turn it into an idol, seeking it for comfort, it becomes a sin. It's like money. Money is not inherently bad, but the love and obsession of it is. Putting anything before God is a sin.

I got saved and kept on drinking alcohol after that but obviously controlled myself to not get drunk. As much as I was able to limit myself.... the truth is that my flesh just got stronger with every sip and it became harder to fight temptations. I might be able to fight the temptation of drinking more glasses, but I wasn’t full on sober either 🤷🏽‍♂️. Personally I just made a decision to not drink alcohol at all.... I literally don’t need it I can drink soda. Alcohol has just always interfered... either my fleshly temptations take over, I drink too much or I become reckless. Just decided to stay away... I don’t need it🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️.... what’s the purpose of drinking it anyways

Whatever takes your focus off the narrow road is bad for you. For some guys it's beer, for others it's golf or eating pizza. The devil will not tempt you with something that which you are naturally inclined not to do - ie: Example :The devil will not temp Pst. John Piper with beer, because that's a non-issue for the pastor, the devil might tempt him with something else which he has an affinity for, like spending too much time in front of the TV etc. What is your affinity? How do you guard against being submitted to your affinity? That's the business end question here. I love PS3 and RU-vid and if I don't watch out, 3 hours will have passed. 1. Is it a sin? If you can’t find your answer in the first question, ask the second: 2. Is it wise?
@McScott76
@McScott76 6 лет назад
It may be wise. It depends on the context. Here's an example... I come home worn out and stressed from work. I really want to spend quality time with my kids, but I know I'm physically and emotionally exhausted and am likely to be impatient or short with them. I pour a glass of wine and sip it as I ask God to give me patience. The wine helps me unwind and reset my mind before I play with my kids. To me, that's a wise use of wine. And before you go on some tangent about how "you shouldn't need wine... you should just trust God"... let me ask you, if you had a headache would you take Advil or trust God? Do you drink coffee in the morning to help "pick you up?" Why not just trust God? Wine has medicinal properties. It helps calm nerves. So no, it is not necessarily sin to drink. And yes, it may be wise. It all depends on context.

The Pharisees claimed that Jesus was a drunkard because he chose to drink wine after making the opposite indictment of John the Baptist, claiming he had a demon because of his abstinence and odd dietary practices (Luke 7:33-34). Was it “unwise” for Jesus to drink wine, knowing the Pharisees would claim he abused it? Pharisees will always find a way to project their legalism on other believers. Not much has changed in 2,000 years.

@@McScott76 If we try to understand Jesus in biblical context more, you will be never comprehend him. There are other contexts such as Jesus cursing the tree that did not bear fruit on his way to Jerusalem. Leave the pharisees aside, we dont have to do the same and go cursing every tree that does not bear fruit. You and I both know that God's grace can heal anyone and you wouldnt need wine to help the healing. Also wine during Jesus time was 8 parts water to one part wine which is way weaker than the strength of wine existing in modern day. To compare wine without studying the alcohol and fermentation processes in Jesus time vs modern day would lead to a whole new misleading conclusion. Wine was also a preferrable beverage at that time since water was not as safe for drinking. I gather you have not looked into this pockets of research any further. Drinking water standards were not as safe as it is in modern day. The fermentation involved in making wine made it a safe option and therefore it was the preferred beverage. Another interesting factor is that the ratio of 8 parts of water to one part wine made it safe for children to consume it without being intoxicated. You would need 21 standard cups to be intoxicated. The pharisees are people who only studied the law without studying aspects beyond the law. That lack of additional knowledge leads them to lack a proper understanding of the way Jesus enacted himself. We have full knowledge of the truth, lets not obstruct it with our own bias.

Everything that is made by God, including alcohol, is inherently good, because the Lord is good - but because of sin, what's good can be tainted, so like Pastor Piper said, it's very important to center ourselves with God first so we don't idolize things around us, including alcohol.

Why do you think they claimed Jesus turned water into wine ?
@truth8307
@truth8307 3 года назад
All part of the trick, check these 20 evidence especially the first 4 and the last paragraph: 20 IRREFUTABLE EVIDENCE that proved Bible God is likely FAKE, don't miss the last paragraph that explains them all: 1) A creator god claimed to be all mighty should be the oldest and only religion but all the pagans, Greek, Chinese, Hinduism religions existed earlier. This proved their Creator claim fake. 2) Jesus similarities with Buddha. Maya to Mary, miracle pregnancy to virgin pregnancy, birth during a journey home to from home, prophesied soon after birth, both had a disciple who betrayed them, walked on water, Gautama left the palace at age 29 and Jesus appeared at 29, Gautama became Buddha at 35 and Jesus died and resurrected at around 35 too, Buddha had a big meal while Jesus had a last supper before they died, after they passed away, 500 arahants witnessed compilation of Buddha's teachings and over 500 witnesses to Jesus's resurrection etc. All coincidental ? Beside Buddha, Jesus was also found to be copied from other figures. Surely they can't be ALL coincidental. 3) Many of the Bible's mythologies was copied from older pagans, Greek, Egyptian or Hinduism religions(note the names too) E.g. Adam & Eve from Atman and Jiva, in Hinduism, big flood and survivor Noah/3 sons same as Manu/3 sons although cause of flood is different. Even the names of Abraham and wife/sister Sarah close to Brahma and Saraswathi beside having quite similar story. Regardless of which religion copied which, it proved this god is NOT the only true god or all mighty as it doesn't makes sense for an ALMIGHTY GOD to create or allow more copies or religions. 4) Why should a true all mighty and all knowing God allowed their people to branch off and kill their parent religion Judaism or Zoroatruism ? "Free will" as an excuse is not acceptable as earlier they claimed their God killed all people with a big flood(without freewill) because they sinned. 5) The way they collect tithings during Sunday mass is so tricky. They know people will be shy not to pay or tend to pay more when others could be watching. This is why they don't just use a stationed money box like Buddhism, Hinduism or Chinese temples where people can donate anytime. Catholics and Islam made it even bigger by suggesting donation of a certain percentage of their income. 6) The Bible condemned non-followers, clearly mentioned in Mark's words 16:16. Why should a Creator God's religion condemn non-believers when in the first place, they claimed their God created the world? Isn't this like playing both sides of the same coin, both good and evil ? 7)Not knowing why or how the world exists don't mean that it was created by a god. Now "Creator" idea got stale, they use "Intelligent Design" What is so intelligent in its design? If people don't need to go to toilet and don't have unpleasant feelings or sufferings, then I will call it an intelligent design. 8)Wisdom, mindfulness and meditaion are not taught or encouraged by them because they don't want their followers' minds to be clearer and wiser. 9)The Bible copied very much from older religions but not the theory of karma because karma idea defeats the purpose of the all mighty God and it will prevent people from doing bad deeds. Saying God love or forgive sins is a trick playing both sides of the coin. 10) The way the church preached and claimed simply lacked substance and logic. If you ask them intelligent question, they will always be evasive and say you are a troll or using the same circular reasoning tactic. 11) It don't makes sense to claim that only their believers will go to heaven and others don't since they claimed their God created all people. Such claim is an insult to other religions and cultures and caused people to divide. A good religion should be non-sectarian, secular and treat all people equally. 12)Most major festivals and holidays related to Christianity are fake including Christmas(Jesus can't be born in winter), Easter, Thanksgiving, Good Friday, All Souls, Halloween and even New Year are copied from paganism. 13) Using fear like hell or "end of the world" every 2 years but we are still here. 14) The fraud case of Mother Teresa(Google it) and after she died, those money she collected was not returned to India. 15)If their God is all-mighty, why need missionaries to convert others ? 16) The ongoing child sex abuses committed by the pastors/priests that I read so often. 17) The Bible is full of lust(Solomon's part), evil and violence. Their God killed countless people when Satan only killed a few. 18) The Bible condemned dogs because they know dogs are man's best friend. Making men lonely is the best way to keep them dependant on religion. 19) If God created everybody, why then condemn LGBT or other religions ? 20) Incidents, eg: (a) U.S., U.K, France, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Mexico are all high Christianity population countries and more people died from Covid-19, over 400K Americans alone !! (b)The Air Asia plane crash of killed 41 church members, 2 missionaries and their few month old baby. Only 1 reason can tie up all 20 points above, this God was man-made to con or control people.

Here is a thought I had as it pertains to issues we face on "drawing the line" for sin. Case in point, Pastor Piper... (I so wish I attended his church just to call him Pastor Piper LOL).. But Pastor said, he saw so many come through his ministry trying to get free from alcohol. I can just see all the people who are adamantly against drinking nodding their heads in agreement while thinking thats exactly why they dont drink. With this in mind, ask yourself a question. How many other men and women who are rich with all their needs met and no "need" for God in their minds, NEVER SET FOOT in a church and are going to hell just as fast as the drunkard??? Think about that! I just wish more people would use wisdom and have much more balance in their approach to who is a sinner and who isnt. The bible is clear on a lot of issues but perhaps the largest sin of all sins is the omitted sins of the believers. Meaning, all the Christians who are NOT doing what they are supposed to be doing. Its those same christians that love to be the judge of everyone all the while marching toward their own judgement. We cant stray from the lines of truth but more love and wisdom is desperately needed today. Pastor Piper hehe is the man and seems to possess one of the more powerful gifts of wisdom I have seen today. God Bless him and God Bless all!

I think its as simple as this. If you drink wine, beer or even the hard stuff. If you catch a slight buzz and your reading a book, watching a great movie, or just sitting on your patio enjoying a relaxing evening, this is not a sin. Unless, the alcohol causes you to suddenly stand up and start flipping off passing cars, yelling obscenities at your neighbors, or beating your wife and kids. If you wouldn't normally do these things, and you let the alcohol influence you into doing these things, then you let the alcohol CAUSE you to sin. You are still responsible for your actions even when your drunk or buzzed. You won't be able to tell God that you wouldn't normally have done that because you were drunk. You are responsible for your actions at all times. Drunk or not. However, if you can drink a little alcohol and not let it cause you to do sinful things, then its not a sin. If you drink and become an addicted drunk, then that too is obviously a sin because the Bible says all drunks are condemened. Does drinking a little alcohol make you a drunk? I don't think so because like the pastor said, even Jesus made and drank wine. Was he a drunk? Of course not. Also, I have read somewhere that at the founding of the USA, everyone drank beer because the water was impure and the beer was. So did all our founding fathers, mothers go to hell because they drank beer? I doubt it

I find it humorous that all the people who adamantly campaign against alcohol and say that the miraculous wedding wine was grape juice completely miss the alcoholic nuance to the miracle. When the man said to Jesus that you normally serve the good wine first and then the poor wine, that’s a trick party hosts use to impress their guests. Serve them high quality wine at the beginning and then once their senses are dulled a little you can serve poor wine and they have a hard time telling the difference. It would never make sense to serve Non-alcoholic wine in that way, but the anti-alcohol campaigners often don’t understand that.

I am indeed. I typically abstain from alcohol myself and I've seen great destruction that is alcohol related, I say related because the substance itself does not destroy, the persons indwelling sin does. Regardless that still does not mean that it is a sin to drink alcohol, it is very clearly indicated in the scriptures that it is not, alcoholism is a sin, gluttony is a sin, but the mere consumption of alcohol is not a sin. Does this mean you SHOULD drink? No, there are a vast number of people who should abstain from drinking all together, there are people who shouldn't ever gamble because they simply can't handle it. Gambling is not a sin either, it can be, but it's not inherently. Alcohol, Gambling & Weapons also cause a whole lot of harm in the world, except they really don't, our sin causes the harm, the vehicle is simply different.

In the Gospel of Matthew (11:18-19), Jesus, comparing himself with John the Baptist, says "for John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon’; the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ " In the Gospel of Luke, (7:33-34), Jesus says " For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon’; the Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ " Christian theology holds that Jesus was without sin. The Bible, which is supposedly the ultimate authority on faith and morals for Christians, is also quite clear that Jesus consumed alcohol. Indeed, in the Gospel of John (2:6-7), while attending a wedding feast, Jesus turns the water in six stone jars, each holding between 20 and the 30 gallons, into wine. In and of itself, there is no basis whatever in the gospels for concluding that Jesus considered the consumption of alcohol a sin. What is unacceptable is the abuse of alcohol in all its forms, including the idolatry of booze.

I've heard this argument before, but have never found any historical proof for it. I grew up in an extremely conservative church and as I grew up I decided that I think our church made it up to "explain away" what they didn't like in the scriptures. Maybe I'm wrong......

Condemn alchohol and cigarettes, which both are bad for your physical health, but say nothing of other bad habits such as consuming foods such as sugar which causes diabetes, fatty foods which cause obesity which leads to clogged arteries and heart disease.

Jesus did turn water into wine because the king comment Jesus for saving the best wine for the end of the party because after people drinking wine and get drunk would at the end of the party would not care how good the wine was there drunk, I say a drink of alcohol like beer or wine is not sin, drinking to the point of getting drunk is wrong or sin.

All is lawful for me, but not all is helpful. Enjoying a drink is not sin. Drunkeness most certainly is. Scripture makes it plain. There are exceptions of course like drinking in front of someone who struggles with it, either physically or spirituality. It should absolutely be treated with caution but sin? No.

It is good [to do the right thing and] not eat meat or drink wine, or do anything that offends your brother and weakens him spiritually. The faith which you have [that gives you freedom of choice], have as your own conviction before God [just keep it between yourself and God, seeking His will]. Happy is he who has no reason to condemn himself for what he approves. But he who is uncertain [about eating a particular thing] is condemned if he eats, because he is not acting from faith. Whatever is not from faith is sin [whatever is done with doubt is sinful]. ROMANS 14:21‭-‬23 AMP

Ok, that was the shakiest start to a question here I've ever heard from Piper. Glad he went on further to explain. People often get upset when we talk about abstaining from alcohol and they are Christians. I don't condemn anyone but I wonder if the world see it different when they see us downing alcohol like they do?

like how jesus instructed the rich man to sell his possessions and give to the poor, what those two have in common is they both had to out of necessity, if jesus hated alchohol he wouldnt have transformed the water into wine. it was the best wine they had to!

Back in the day, they were talking about wine Making wine was the only way they had to preserve fruit, and that's what they did. Grain alcohol is a fairly recent invention. It's only purpose is to get you plastered.

Your explanation on consuming wine To say It's ok to indulge, but don't abuse it. However, if drinking causes or influences one to sin. Isn't that like saying, "you can sin a little just as long as you don't overdo it"?. That seems to cloud the idea that one without sin, would slightly influence it. Please answer, because I'm still struggling to find a better answer.

@@reflexionesdelabiblia6711 no. Wine. It does not say it is juice anywhere, it uses the word wine. Would they really not mention the fact that the wine was alcohol free? That would be an important detail. Jesus was accused of being a drunkard. That wouldn't make sense unless he drank wine
