It’s a 600 LWB (i.e., the absolute top of the line Mercedes owned by world leaders all around the world in period). The fact that this guy didn’t know that is proof positive that he knows absolutely nothing about cars, is not a real car guy, and has no business touching anything of historical significance. He should stick to hot rodded Imprezas, Lancers and Civics
@@JB-mk4ry Radio phones did exist back then in major cities. WB6NVH has a great write-up on the system. Elvis was certainly important enough to have one in his limo.
Elvis stories are as cool and as unique as each setting sun. I was fortunate enough to know Jimmy Snow, Hank Snows son, who was close with Elvis throughout his life time. He had nothing but high remarks of his life long friend
The one car that stuck to me about Elvis Stuff being cursed, is the white 1977 Cadillac Funeral Coach that carried him to his resting place. That car caught fire multiple times and was eventually scrapped. Last pic I know of is the shell in the junkyard. I wonder if they actually completely scrapped it.
When Elvis was stationed in Germany he bought a white BMW 507, but he had to have it resprayed red because women would write their phone numbers on it in lipstick and it stained the paint. Years later it was restored but unfortunately they restored it back to showroom condition, anything that could be replaced with new they did and they took it back to bare metal and sprayed it the original white. The patina and funk of Elvis it had collected when he owned it has gone for ever, but they still say it was the BMW that Elvis owned. There's videos of the restoration on RU-vid.
I grew up in Jasper Indiana, home of Jasper Engines and Transmission. If you don't know who they are I promise you've seen their sign on a shop somewhere. My high school shop teacher worked there at some point and told us a good story about Elvis's Cadillac. Supposedly in the 80s or 90s his Cadillac was being restored and the engine was sent there to be rebuilt. I'm not sure what they got back to put in the car but the story goes that there were a ton of people in the area claiming to own bolts, pistons, rods, etc. from Elvis's caddy afterwards...
Pretty sure that isn't some special custom mercedes that was stretched just for him It's a mercedes 600 which had like a third of its entire production run be the six door vehicles
Thanks for sharing! What a great experience. That era Mercedes is special to begin with. To be stretched and owned by such a celebrity makes it even that much more Awesome.
That's NOT "stretched Benz sedan". It's a 600 Grosser. They were completely hand built & bespoke. There's no 2 alike. Instead of having electrics, it has all hydrolic systems, windows, doors, trunk & suspension.
A friend of mine put the roof back on Elvis's "gold record" 1960 Cadillac. Somebody had the dumb idea to cut the roof off of it and attach it to a machine that would lift the roof off so you could see the gold records that are attached to the headliner. I remember seeing it when I was a kid. We went on a field trip at school to the old country music hall of fame museum. Anyway, I remember asking them what the big roof was in the corner of their body shop in Shelbyville, TN. They told me to look underneath and I instantly knew what it was. They also told me that they would kill me if I told anybody that the car was sitting in their shop. They welded the roof back on, did a little touch up paint work, replaced all the damaged trim, and delivered it to the museum in Nashville. They lifted the car by crane up to an opening in the wall of the 5th floor (I think) and rolled it inside. I believe they'd have to tear a hole in the building to get the car out. I sat in the car and held the car phone to my ear like the famous photo of Elvis, but I can't remember what I did with the picture they took.
The Mercedes 600 was always a special order vehicle for heads of state, oligarchs, warlords, tin pot dictators, arms dealers and the like. It's not a stretched Mercedes sedan by any means.
that was actually a really cool story. there's something about classic cars in general that have a certain spookiness about them. or maybe ive just seen Christine too many times 😅
I like how he seems to respect Elvis and talks nicely about him but he said so many things that us hardcore fans know aren't true it's clearly shows hes either been told incorrect information or he isnt as much of a fan as he's acting like or he'd know much of what he said especially towards the end is not true.
Great story! It should be added that Elvis was introduced to Col. Parker by Mae Axton, an English teacher/songwriter who co-wrote Heartbreak Hotel, which they wrote for Elvis. It was no accidental meeting. Her son, Hoyt Axton, also wrote a #1 hit later, Joy to the World, making them the only mother/son combo to write #1 songs. BTW, that 600 uses the four speed Hydromatic trans that was designed for the late 1940's Cadillac.
@@theanomalous1401 I can see how that can happen. But it’s quite funny as vinwiki has had GMG automotive on here before (not gas monkey garage) and that is who screwed over Tpain and his s14 drift car known as pickle rick. There’s a video on RU-vid where someone put all of Tpain’s short stories on it into one video and it is a long story! But it would be cool to see Tpain who is a car enthusiast himself, to tell his story on vinwiki
Limousines in US are stretched sedans. This Mercedes 600 was factory built. The most expensive car in the world at the time, and sold to dictators and world leaders all over the world. It wasn't made specifically for Elvis. Get your facts straight...
I think that he didn't say anything about the car, he mostly talked about Elvis, he didn't even knkw that the car he is talking about is a Mercedes 600 Pullman, the absolut top of the line model available. I can hardly believe that this person restored such a complicated car without even knowing what it is
He didnt restore it, he washed it. The guy is a carwash boy not a restorer of high end 600 Pullmans. This car by now would have had far more work than he would have done, by far better people.
@@borismcfinnigan3430 A "Car-wash boy" with a MBA from the University of Vermont and is the CEO of a multi-million dollar auto detailing franchise and car care products line has more credibility than anyone you could recommend, I'm sure .
@@theanomalous1401 Oh wow you are right. An MBA in headlight restoration is such an achievement, although he is currently doing a doctorate in bird shit removal, so his trajectory hasn't hit peak just yet. Inspirational.
Yeah, watch a "Mannix" episode from the early seventies. He always had a "car phone" back then. Not a cell phone. You had a "mobile operator" to complete calls.
That's an awkward question to ask on an Automotive channel? You might have better luck if you talk to a Hippophile Religious scholar and decide after that.
@@theanomalous1401 lol. It is but he offered the advice on an automotive channel. You must not have heard the story he did about Wayne Newton on this channel.
Thank you for sharing and thank you for NOT saying he was the king of rock n roll, because it’s Chuck Berry. 😊 I love stories like this and saw this car at his house many moons ago.
LOL, I read the comment and was like, "Hell yeah! This dude is so based, it's time to dole out the props! Then I notice it's Dominick! the only man I know that has Rock & Roll coursing through his veins. Thank you brother, for setting the record straight.
I'm going to say I've been to Graceland I've walked through the house the jet's I just wasn't feeling anything to me Elvis Is just Elvis never was enthused and to this day I've don't have a single song of his the Mercedes limo is cool though his music wasn't for everybody
@5:54 that's pretty weird, as he was saying "charisma", my eyes went straight to the "charism" plate in the background. I didn't even notice it before that. It was probably in my subconscious.
The first cellular phones started to appear in the 80s, but radio telephones existed in the 50s. Elvis was certainly important enough to put one in his limo.
So detailing an ex Elvis Mercedes is now good enough for a VinWiki video? Maybe I can come on and talk about the time I detailed Audrey Hepburn's 1978 VW Beetle Cabriolet.
Elvis actually got his start from McDonald's because he was driving truck as a truck driver and the owner of McDonald's herd him singing and offered him a job singing jingles and commercials for McDonald's back in the 1950's. That's how Elvis got his start in the music industry. And the rest is history from there with him meeting the cournal and going from there on forward.
My in-laws were huge Elvis nuts. My father in law did Elvis impersonations back in the day and was pretty legit. My wife’s name was of course Lisa Marie. But her mother fainted when she’d seen Elvis live as a teenager. I’ve seen this car, I took my late wife to Graceland for her 30th. LMM 9/27/84 -7/22/21
I'm shocked he didn't mention Wayne Newton's horse's 🍆 in this after seeing that other video. He mentioned it like 50 times and acted like a 12 year old.
Your goose bumps are not originated by Elvis, they are caused by a the aura of legend of a car you didn't even know! Worked on it??? No way, may be dusted it off, but i hope only outside!! You better should not show off with something you don't know of! Every 600, especially the long bodies like this were customized to the buyers whishes. Nearly all of them were ordered, you could not buy ready cars out of dealers show rooms. And the car near the plane was not even one. may be you worked on that.
