Emilia is the pragmatic lady-in-waiting to Desdemona, and is a character often thought of as being 'feministic' for her shrewd views on marriage and fidelity in Act 4 of the play.
But is she really such a strong, hard-headed character, or does she show vulnerabilities which give us deeper insights into her true self - and how Shakespeare wants us to see the challenges faced by women and wives back in his time?
In this video, I analyse Emilia in depth with all these questions in mind. Make sure you watch it all for top grade knowledge to ace your next Othello paper!
TIMESTAMPS:
2:48 - Point #1: Emila's conflicted loyalties - boss husband Iago vs boss lady Desdemona
6:27 - Point #2: Talk a big game - Is Emilia a real or wannabe feminist?
10:03 - Point #3: The dangers of overthinking - Emilia's 'I think'

@JenChan Год назад
You are so welcome, Jess! I know it's easier said than done but try to stay relatively relaxed about the exam - most of the time students (especially dedicated and hard working ones like you!) have everything they need in their heads by the time they get to the exam, and it's often more nerves and anxiety than anything which affects their performance. So just put in the necessary work as you revise, then trust the process and yourself as you bring your A game when crunch time comes! 💪💪💪

likely on either emilia or cassio since iago has been brought up before. I have a feeling it'll be on a theme though since last year it was on Desdemona. If so i think it would either be jealousy, Tragedy or race

Hey Jen! What language analysis can I expand on for the quote 'the ills we do their ills instruct us so'? I want to comment on the contrast between the shifting pronouns we and their surrounding the 'ills' but I cant find a language term that fits it. Thanks :)
@JenChan
@JenChan 10 месяцев назад
Hi Evelyn! This is an example of chiasmus. In "the ills we do" and "their ills instruct us", the phrase "we do" places the pronoun before the verb, whereas "instruct us" reverses that grammatical order. You can watch my Chiasmus explainer Short video for ideas on effects of how this is used here! ru-vid.comIdYvGY-PwZE?feature=share

Hi Jen. In my assignment I'm being asked to analyse to what extent Desdemona 's relationship with Othello is predictably dangerous -to what extent did Desdemona take a risk in marrying outside of her class and culture. Could the counter argument (it was not dangerous) be that Othello's attitude shifts between loving and loathing his wife? Alice x
@JenChan
@JenChan 10 месяцев назад
I'm not sure why Othello's shifts between loving and loathing (which are quite volatile, to be honest!) would be a strong piece of evidence for Desdemona's marriage to him *not* being dangerous. If anything, those temperamental shifts between emotional extremes seem better proof to illustrate that it was... dangerous? If I were to lodge a counterargument, I'd probably say that Desdemona's decision to marry the Moor was not calculated or strategic, but emotional and personal, hence the issue of danger was never 'predicted' or even considered from her vantage.
