As a play about the doomed marriage between a black male soldier and a white female aristocrat, ‘Othello’ provides an especially interesting - and also challenging - case for artists, many of whom have mastered the portrayal of dark versus light juxtaposition to create new insights into the complex characters and themes in Shakespeare’s ‘Moorish tragedy’.
In this video, I switch gears from analysing words and language to finding meaning in pre-Raphaelite, Victorian, neoclassical and contemporary brushstrokes, shadows and perspectives by painters who have endeavoured to depict and reimagine ‘Othello’ in their creative oeuvre.
