Anyone saying 06 shouldn’t have been Cannavaro most likely wasn’t watching football that year. A big part of why players couldn’t get to Gigi was because Cannavaro was quite literally a brick wall in defense that year. The man was absolutely dominant as a defender that year for Madrid, Juve, and ofc Italy during the World Cup. So much so, that they nicknamed him “the Berlin Wall”. Anyone who argues Cannavaro’s ballon d’or needs to go watch Cannavaro vs Barcelona in el clasico in 06, vs. Germany in the WC semis, vs. France in the final. those matches are good examples of how good he was that year. He completely shut down the likes of Zidane, Ronaldinho, Thierry Henry, Klose, etc. The image of him winning possession from Podolski by jumping and chesting the ball in the dying minutes of the 06 semi finals vs germany, that launched the attack that led to the winning goal is one i’ll never forget. he was an absolute unit in defense

As an amateur player who played as forward in both futsal and football, I think Fabio (and other great defenders like Nesta, Cafu, Maldini, Puyol, Ramos, etc) also deserve this award as well. I tried to learn defending techniques like marking, sliding, etc, and it's very hard to do it right, let alone being as efficient as Cannavaro that it brings to clean sheets and a world cup victory! balloon D'or itself isn't the most accurate and credible award for me since it dominated by strikers, midfielders and popularity (as much i like CR7 and Messi). Maybe there's should be awards for every positions , and no such thing as "best player" because it's pretty absurd

Anyone who didn't watch that World cup in 2006... knows nothing about why Cannavaro won it.. He didn't win a single yellow card! and go watch his performance overall!! Italy only conceded 2 goals! 1 from penalty the other from own goal! thanks to Buffon + Cannavaro His performance against Germany & France Was the best defending in the Football history .. Depends, what kind of right full was he? Now a days all full backs are wing backs, but back then a full back was more a centre back that had some pace or had a bit going forward, or was less two footed. (Not all the time of course)

@GoodMan-rf8mz Thuram started as RB Later in his career he played RCB Thuram was very skilled crosses & goals Once desailly and blanc retired that’s when thuram claimed that position that’s when he got older Cannvaro always played as CB in Parma along side sensini meanwhile thuram took the right back position Italian worship defense So it’s unrealistic for an Italian player back then to be taught how to defend by a French teammate player in the same age Plus Cannvaro always have his own style

Just my thought, Henry should won 2006 Ballon D'or He just 2 match away for being double Champs (World Cup and UCL) Canna was impressive in WC, but in the club level he just play "good" Even Buffon and Pirlo could have won it instead of him Don't get me wrong, it is not hatred or something like that, being undersized defender I grew up watching Canna and Puyol to learn and masterize defensive play for undersized CB So, it's just my honest&factual opinion
