Erin, I couldn’t agree with you more when you say that not everything has to be about making money and that some things can be for fun. I have my published books, but I’ve got a few fan fiction shorts under my belt as well. I’ve written fan fiction shorts for Millennium, Super Street Fighter II, Mega Man, Cowboy Bebop, Pink Floyd the Wall, Inspector Gadget, and Super Mario Brothers 2. I am ashamed of absolutely none of those works. Thank you for the awesome video, Erin!

HE REWROTE OLDER STORIES IN ESSENTIALLY ALTERNATE UNIVERSES. IT WAS TOTALLY FANFICTION.

As terrible a piece as I felt your book Heart and Seoul, in part because your editor should be fired, I completely agree with you on your views on fanfiction. By the way your work has genuinely good qualities, but you need negative comments to help improve your work when your work has legitimately bad traits. If you hate it do not read it is a bad practice. If I hate it I should read it, not only to potentially help you, but to help myself as a writer. A person who has something negative to say about your work is not necessarily someone who should not read it if they don't like it, and that includes fanfiction. Appreciate the bad comments you might get for that can and will help you improve your writing if you use those responses in a personally creative way. Just my two cents.

It did!! For "Best Related Work"! They had all the people in the audience who'd written fanfic stand up and everyone clapped. It was super cute. Everyone who had stuff up on the site technically got included I think??

I used one of my favorite shows to write a 78000 word fanfic just to see if I could it. Used videos like yours and Jenna Moreci's as a guide. Loved every minute of, especially the feedback.

Id say that often times fanfiction can be better, as its more niche, expressive and free from limitations published and or original works are held by.

I wrote FanFiction because it was always hard for me to express myself and explain something in spoken word but if I wrote it down, I could say whatever I wanted

It definitely does. All writing is good for honing your skills. Your point about having a space for marginalized voices was so on point. This whole video was on point. Bottom line, however you may choose to write, write!

Love the video! I totally think my writing has improved over the years of writing fanfiction. I like to write characters with different disabilities or conditions that might have stigma to it. Also like writing about medical things. And this I think has made my research abilities a bit better too. I like everything you had to say about fanfiction; you're very well spoken.

It's not about fan fiction. Every writing is good for something, but wish fullfillment writing is usually really bad, and fan fiction is a kind of writing where the wish fullfillments express themselves in their worst way. The problem is in the intention, not the tool. Fanfiction is a fun useful way to practice if you do it well instead of writing just to indulge on yourself

I don't actually see anything wrong with the self indulgence part of it. The whole point of hobbies and fandom is to enjoy yourself

@@ErinKinsella not wrong, but it doesn't get you the best result exactly because it's a hobby. If I run for hobby I don't go to the Olympics. I know I should relax at least in fanfictions, but I can't. My practice playground it's the same fanfictional videogame saga since forever, I can't just leave it be at it's old fun stage. I write or rewrite pieces of it when I need practice for something specific in my stories, or I apply on it new plotting and character development methods before trying it on my stuff. Fanfiction for me is more like a tool than a relax moment. I'm a bit restless
