That is how you're supposed to ride - instep on the footpeg. The toes-on-footpeg position is only necessary if you're going to extreme lean angles and risk catching your foot on the ground (and then only on the inside foot). By the way, this is _why_ we have heels on boots and shoes in the first place. They were originally invented to help horse riders lock their feet into the stirrups, exactly as you've just used them to lock you into the 'bike. They then became popular as a fashion item, and eventually became ubiquitous.
@Uraltreter
@Uraltreter 4 года назад
Grimbeard , you couldn’t get away with this here in the mountains, tippy toes all the way. Even when I’m on my toes I grind the side of my boots sometimes and that with legal speed following the traffic. Riding instep on the pegs my feet would get ripped off the pegs.
@Grim_Beard
@Grim_Beard 4 года назад
@@Uraltreter Sounds like you're leaning the 'bike too much. I've ridden very twisty mountain roads (including switchback hairpins) in Scotland and New Zealand, at a decent pace, and barely scuffed a toe-slider.

@Need4speedirl

dicax Harley bikes can only lean about 30 degrees, some less, before metal parts begin to make contact with the road. Sport bikes and sport nakeds have the ability to lean double that if the rider has the skills.
@OnlyKaerius
@OnlyKaerius 4 года назад
@@Uraltreter Are you using body position at all? Heck, it sounds like you could be counter-leaning your body like motocross riders. Even sitting straight I have to ride very very hard to lean far enough to even approach scraping boots/pegs. I've got one local corner I can do it while doing the speed limit, but that's a tight 90° corner on a 60km/h(~38mph) road. Usually I can double the speed limit or more and not even come close to scraping anything, in the twisty bits(though at that point I'm using proper body position for safety reasons).

Thanks for sharing, I'll give this a try. Side note: As a new rider, I found that circle 8's around two cones or light poles(whatever) that are about 125ft apart, while trying to get as much lean angle as possible, has helped me improve my cornering confidence and skill, more than anything else I've done. In a few 1 hour sessions, I went from terrible to consistent throttle and lots of lean angle. The transition is brilliant because it forces you to go from hanging off one side of the bike, immediately to hanging off the other side as you cross the middle. I was struggling with the 40ft circle thing because inevitably I got too fast for my comfort in lean angle and I'd get spit out, off line. Not to mention, you get dizzy after about 5 laps lol. I needed a real corner with somewhere to actually look, for it to work for me. Like a race dog chasing the rabbit. The figure 8's let you keep pressing that threshold in both directions repetitively without a failure point that kills the rythm. I just thought I'd share as maybe this info coming from a new rider, might help you teach others. Cool story: I usually have the parking lot to myself but today I found a woman on her sport bike practicing her low speed braking and stuff. I'm pretty sure she was a motojitsu fan based on what I saw her doing. It was cool to see another rider trying to improve their skills properly.

I caught a glimpse of a vid in the side panel...putting your knee down, but practicing in a parking lot?!?!? Intrigued, I had to check it out. MotoJitsu, hmmm. Skills and Knowledge. Two hours later I'm still watching your videos! My first bike was an FZR 1000 in '95. Like you and the CBR1000, I still feel lucky to have survived. Since then, I've completed racing school and jammed a few years in CCS series in Florida on a FZR600. As a cop I also became a motorman HD Road King(best motorcycle course I've ever taken) Now 25 years later, about to hit 50 years old, I still ride. Ducati 848 and R1 in the garage. I have quite a bit of knowledge and experience and still learned plenty of things from your videos. Foot Peg Pressure - never gave it much of a conscious thought before. Love your work. Subbed.

Something to work on that I hadn't thought about. Thanks UPDATE: I did try this on my last couple rides. It definitely makes me feel more planted on the bike and gives me more confidence in getting better body position in turns, i.e. shifting body position to decrease lean angle. I'm rambling here but want to share something that happened to me related to another video of yours . I came around a twisty corner I know well accelerating before I saw the exit. Seems okay on known corners right? Nope. Like you said, see the exit first. There was a truck stopped in the road waiting for traffic to make a left. I had to stand the bike up and hit the brakes. Went a little wide which got my adrenaline going and not in a good way. SEE THE EXIT. Great lesson from one of your cornering videos. Keep 'em coming

That's a technique we use for mountain biking...we call it dipping. Having the moving crank changes it a little...we put the outside pedal at its lowest point at the apex of the corner. It helps develop grip by putting force directly into the ground on the inside of the tire.

@motojitsu brother, I had the same discovery but in a different way. One of my mirrors got bent, so I took it off. Had to start relying on full shoulder checks, getting thorough but smooth quick head turns. I just happened to press into my left peg as I turned my head write, and ... Wow! I had full view of the back and witout my head feeling like it's going to beetlejuice. I could practically turn from torso and neck following, without any weight on my arms. It's became an inmportant part of my riding now. The bottom half is really what controls my ridig. The hands are there for micro hep, like counter steering (eventhough, as you discovered you can assist the counter steer with peg pressure). Using the legs took my riding to another level, like how that translates into corners where there's a bit of lean needed.

I can connect with your video right now after watching it and i now feel safe. I found this style the hard way like i wanted me to peg on my bike while taking a sharp turn with both feet on my toe balls but then again i noticed that the outer foot that faces the most centrifugal force, keeps automatically advancing forward on the turn and gets locked automatically on the heel. And then i voluntarily changed my cornering foot position and now i keep my outer foot on the peg under my back heel and then i take the sharp turn. yes, now i get it from you even clearly and feeling confident of my riding posture. With puny motorbike (due to displacement restrictions here in Bangladesh where only up to 165 cc is allowed) though my average speed within city is 90kmph ..but i try to move safely... and corner only when i am on some nearby highway on weekends. Thanks a lot for your much valuable coaching here :) Love from Bangladesh!!!

After pasting the video link my phone wouldn’t let me complete my comment. That guy Lexco taught me that the third way of steering a bike is using weight on the pegs and your knees to lean the rear wheel. The front wheel naturally turns in the direction you want to go without any input from the rider. I keep my hands very light on the controls just to cover the brake and apply throttle but let the knee pressure do the turning. It’s amazing how well it works especially on my little R3 which is so light and turn happy. Another thing I practice is using leg strength to keep my butt off the seat for prolonged periods. Learned that on a bumpy road and could hardly walk the next day but it totally strengthened my legs. That helps with applying load onto the pegs as you described. Thanks for your new tip, but loose the man bun please!

It sounds like an alignment principle. In my Aikido practice we always look for that; from grounding through elongation upward. In that we don't need to push through the foot. With riding bike we make connection all the time. It sounds like you discovered the lower part of alignment. If you think about your jujitsu practice, could you recognize something of this too?

Hi Eddie can u give me some advice on this one? Say u are street riding and u are going through a corner at high speed. I put in some upper body position but on the street u don't drag your knee so what to do with legs? Just keep them clamped around the tank?? I have the habbit to stick my knee out like i'm knee draging but in fact i am not because my but stays in the middle of the seat so the knee does not even come close to the ground. The result is i am a bit loose on the bike but it simply feels natural to do this. Is it a bad habbit? On the street should my legs stay clamped around the tank at all times or is it oke like i am doing it? If u say it's a bad thing i will try to get rid of this habbit. Thanks!

I found that I can avoid the brief delay in counter steering by simultaneously applying pressure to the bar and the foot peg on the side that I want to turn to. If I want to turn right, away from an oncoming car (who has drifted across the centerline), there is no delay in the movement to the right. And I can bring it back just as quickly in a swerve. so one of the things I look for on a bike now is the positioning of the pegs and the leverage that they give me (as well as that of the handlebars). What do you think?

Interesting observation, I discover the exact same thing a few years ago - pushing on the outside peg in long swipers. I actually extend the force to my inside hand pushing the handle bar to counter steer. So my body is become a conduit to transmit the force from outside peg to inside hand. While I’m sure I don’t ride as fast as you do, I’ve been weighting the outside peg for many years. Saved my butt a few times in slippery corners. Keeps the bike upright. Also helps to lower the CG of the bike so I don’t have to lean so much. Works even better when I lower my chest closer to the tank. Thoroughly enjoy your videos! Keep them coming. Fantastic new hair! I thought you were balding... 😁

I own a super duke but recently purchased a second bike, 2019 MV Agusta Dragster 800rr triple. 370 pounds dry, 54 inch wheelbase, 140 horsepower. This is a size of a bicycle. So much easier to handle cuz of less weight vs SD. My first triple. MV Agusta developed a triple before Triumph and won all kinds of world GP’s.

Same as the very common technique in mountain biking to keep traction and keep you low side pedal high, if your low side pedal is in lower position on side of lean, it can hit the ground.

That's to keep pressure downwards to keep traction right? That's what I heard. I only learned how to ride a year ago ( I am 28) and would have loved to grow up on a dirt bike. Heck if I could afford it no one would ever see me on a weekend

Unfortunately, my bike has forward controls so I can't push down to pegs. All I can do is squeeze the tank with my knees to gain more control (at least that's how I think). Idea: Perhaps you can do a video about forward controls (or even better, all types of motorcycles - sport bike, mid controls and forward controls), how it is different and some techniques applied. That would be really appreciated! Thanks for your videos!

Every movement and input requires top points of contact to lever yourself in one fashion or another. Same goes for reacting to inputs. The two main points are presumed by new riders to be the seat and the handlebars. However, the seat is a poor surface as there are times you are simply disconnected, especially off road or rough terrain at speed, and the max downward force is 1 g. The handlebars should be loosely held, nit hung off from. So, the real points of contact requires leg and core effort against pegs and tank. Weighting the pegs and squeezing the bike with your legs, in conjunction with looking where you are wanting to be, will do everything singular instructions try to teach. You’re not hanging your butt out, you’re twisting to face where you want to go using weight on peg, one peg, and your tightly held natural knee press into the tank when you pivot your core to desired direction. It is always the natural movement toward where to go made by using your legs and core. Most people have a weak core and legs, so avoid even talking about it!
@floaton47
@floaton47 4 года назад
THIS is exactly what I have been wondering. Are you saying that I should constantly be squeezing the tank with my knees? Is that to create a point of leverage for the rest of my body movements? And both feet should exert a default amount of pressure, and then add/remove/balance the pressure depending on how I am looking to apply pressure into the handlebars?
@MotoJitsu

Hi, I was watching one of your old videos with your gs, talking about positioning of the foot on the peg, and you said at that tin, that the toe must be as far as from the shifter and sticking to the side of the bike. Am a bit confused from that video to what explaining now!!!. Any clarification. Thanks
@inkvow9671
@inkvow9671 4 года назад
If I'm understanding you correctly, I think your talking about the inside foot, and that's true. You keep that one up so your toes don't touch the ground. This video is referring to the outside foot. I'm sure his inside foot was up.

Can you update any new revelations you've had with this? I discovered weighting the pegs myself, but I load both - locking the outside leg to the bike by putting inward pressure with the knee and putting weight on the INSIDE peg, and I discovered it made my hands light enough I didn't have any weight on them at all. But I wondered if what I was doing was safe or if maybe there were better insights I could glean from others. Thoughts?

For me it doesn’t work. I promise I tried real hard to hold as much as I can with my outer leg and there is just no way to do it! For my riding style my weight is way more placed on the inside leg and changing it just feels awkward and weird. Anyway I know lots of people have different thoughts regarding this topic, I guess it’s all about try and experiment as you say! 👍🏻

Those guys on the track when they’re taking corners that side of the body is very fluid and loose.. if you’re going Fast the force is pushed Outward.. hence putting pressure on the opposite peg grounds the bike

I actually tried this and kinda terrified me because I realised there is a risk in using this technique. Applying pressure with the boot slightly forward, so it's done with the middle of the foot, there is a risk of pressing the rear-break lever by mistake. I think the technique would be much safer when done with the ball of the foot instead; or maybe just tightly "hug" the tank with the knees - I think the result would be the same.

depends or your braking lever. On some (not so sporty) bikes you are right and it might get into the way, in case you should adjust or buy different lever.

Twist Of The Wrist II Chapter 19 p85: "Using the outside peg as your pivot point -while pressure is being applied to the bars, either by just pushing or using a combination push and pull- reduces your weight on the seat and puts the majority of your weight on that lower, outside peg Even if you have your knees firmly clamped on the tank, your legs pressed tightly to the side-panets, your gut and forearms on the tank, your butt up against the seat-back and seat base, both feet solidly on the pegs and a death grip on the bars, you can't get nearly the stability or the power of using only the outside peg and pivot steering ...pivot steering is actually, for lack of a better term, double backwards. Not only is it counter-steering, but pivoted from the opposite side of the bike as well"

Yeah I actually did the same kinda thing where i was experimenting with body position cause while i'm riding the only time my back hurt was when i was forcing my body to stay down because it was so cold as shit one morning. People say to grip the tank all the time, I think because to shift the weight off your back, then i started thinking about pushing back on the feet pegs while riding but then that forces weight to the wrists. Then sometimes my hands are too tight so i loosen up. It's all a dancing game lol

I do a lot of pushing on the pegs. I have two big issues I need to conquer else ive failed at life. Wheelie (especially now waiting on my ktm) and slow turn. I can do slow turns..I just csnt get that idea out of my head of dropping the bike. I figure I should just drop the bike on a slow turn and remove that fear...
