*I used Filmic Pro when I have my iPhone 10 or X and it was nice, now that I have the iPhone15 I wanna try Blackmagic App n see that it has but still the subscriptions are nice but if ya don't use then a lot then it's pointless*
Yes, I agree. Many times I had to get a sub subscription for certain apps just because I use them for the channel but I really don’t use them enough and then I always feel guilty that it was just money wasted…. in my case, though, it is kind of expected to show the app so I have no choice
Interesting video, thanks. I have just installed this on my phone to give it a go and use a Zhiyun Smooth gimbal. I was curious though about the pointer you use in this. Seems useful so could you give the info on it.
Hi Zdenka, I noticed that in previous versions of BM app the codec Apple ProRes 4444 was present but in the new updates it disappeared , did it happen to you as well?
A subscription model for for phone cameras was always going to be a stretch at current phone technologies. Filmic pro may need to go the freemium model route, with the paid version providing some very compelling value additions. In the meantime congratulations Grant Chetty and team over at Blackmagic design, their philosophy of democratizing creativity soldiers on, and we all are benefitting from it.
I flushed Adobe for the same reason and now have a universal license for Affinity Suite that runs on all my devices including the Mac and iPad. I love what Blackmagic has done.
Even if they went back to just a paid version that allows complete ownership as opposed to paying ransom every month or year, they would still be better off. But it's too late for that. There's a free version out now, that gives not just ownership but is actually free, and is every bit as good and only going to get better.
The ability to shoot Landscape while phone is mounted vertically is kind of cool. Also the option of enabling regular Vertical mode for tiktok clips. I hope they continue to work on the app and add new features like that DoubleTake. I don't like that FilmicPro is subscription.
I use DaVinci Resolve and film with my iPhone. The cloud option, where you can upload video clips as you are filming is a game changer and time saver. I hope that Blackmagic will be adding features gradually.
The subscription model killed Filmic Pro. It’s not worth the money. $3 per week or 50 a year isn’t worth it. There are alternatives.out there. Gimbal integration was a nice feature I have to admit.
Great review, thanks! It doesn’t do everything, but it does seem to be a great tool for some cases. The killer feature for those quick “grab shots“ on the go to me is that you can lock it to horizontal mode video. Accidental vertical video in a horizontal production seems to happen often enough to be a problem.
Even for a V.1 it's impressive. I wish there were separate reticles for focus and exposure. The ability to save presets would be nice too along with gimbal compatibility. I do love the BM Cloud link. My workflow is to shoot while traveling (Vlog Motocamping in Vietnam), make selects at night, then auto push to BM cloud while I sleep. Then when I get home, the footage is already safely backed up and in a DaVinci Resolve project I set up prior to leaving and ready to edit. This is my primary app now. FilmicPro has been deleted to force me to get nimble with. all features and settings.
The nail in Filmic Pro's coffin. I payed 50€ for an app that's already outdated and doesn't have Apple Log and doesn't get updates (The Perpetual/Legacy version). They charged extra FOR EVERYTHING. Whatever Filmic Pro features that the Blackmagic Camera app hasn't included in its FIRST free version won't be missed. I do miss gimbal integration, though. But it was never a given. If you use gimbals other than Zhiyun or DJI, you're out anyway.
Although full gimbal integration isn’t available the only part I ever use (record/stop record) is integrated. Just enable "use volume button to trigger record”, connect gimbal to phone via Bluetooth and record start/stop works.
@@ThisOldManOfTheSea True!! I've also found that a 2 people team works best for serious gimbal work. The one handling the camera gimbal worries abot photography and video settings, while the other operates the gimbal remotely from another phone's app. But I actually miss being able to use the gimbal's wheel for zooming and pull-focus.
@@ZdenkaDarula True! You saw all the complaints, did something about it and now you’ve won over a lot of people, only they can ruin it for themselves if they take the same approach. Love your videos, learned a lot! 😊
Blackmagic is a large successful company that makes its money of its professional hardware. They don't need to monetize this app. It is just an add-on for their broader offering.
I think you are the person who has explained this application best so far and you explained it wonderfully, thank you very much. 🥳👍 But there's something I'm curious about: What are the differences between the shooting quality of the Apple stock camera and the "Blackmagic" application? I hope you will prepare such content in the future.
Filmic Remote is a useful companion app that lets you control the camera from another iPhone or iPad. That has been very useful for me. Hope Black Magic implements similar remote control.
I don't like a subscription model, and as I am not using filming apps professionally (just casual use and experimentation for learning), I am sticking to the Legacy version of Filmic (for which I paid the full price purchasing it some time ago). Unfortunately I cannot try this BlackMagic app (I do use Davinci Resolve sometimes) as I am on Android right now, but I appreciate your videos as they are really informative and in the sweet spot for both professionals and amateurs like me. Thanks!
I stuck with the legacy app as well, since I had purchased it before. I don't see the point for a subscription since even the native camera for android (especially Samsung ) has improved a lot.
I purchased Filmic Pro a while ago (before subscription) and still like the app but will only use the Legacy version. I don’t use it enough to justify paying a subscription fee. I did install the Blackmagic Camera app and also use Davinci Resolve for editing but don’t plan on using Bm cloud. I also agree that it’s highly BM will be adding features in the future as users provide feedback…
Could you make a video talking about raw video on android? There's an app called MotionCam Pro that makes the videos look like a real camera There's some samples here on youtube ,the app takes out all of that phone look,it's insane how little people are talking about it Maybe in the future you could do a comparison between stock cam and the app, then raw and ProRes!!
Adeus GH5, adeus Filmic Pro.
Thank you for that great overview. I have both apps, but right now I am using Black Magic because Filmic Pro does not allow for external recording to an SD drive (necessary for some ProRes 4k) Black Magic app allows you to record externally. Filmic pro better get on board with allowing ProRes external recording ASAP. Also, the addition of a waveform monitor would be super helpful instead of just a histogram.
I absolutely agree with the need for ssd external drive capability. So if black magic allows that I’m gonna get the app I just wish they made it for an ipad. And I hope saving presets comes ASAP!
I had already downloaded this app. Was really surprised when I saw it. Haven’t played with it yet. Your review is very helpful. I have the Legacy version of Filmic Pro on my Samsung Note 10+, and was getting ready to buy it on my new IPhone 14 when Filmic went to their subscription model. Just too expensive for me on a yearly basis. For my personal use I can’t justify the price. Excited about Blackmagic’s app. As you said, I can bet they will be adding features to it.
Yes, if you’re using it for personal purposes, then the pricing is definitely high. I do this for living and I only purchased it because it was on sale. Hopefully this app will add more features
$50 a year for a powerhouse camera app like filmic pro is not a deal breaker for me. I will be playing with this new option from black magic. Perhaps when I become more familiar with it I will be open to using the free option exclusively. Right now efficiency is the key factor for me and filmic presents a much smoother workflow when you are in the field. The reticles are an amazing feature,HDR, and just the over all interface makes for a much more efficient work flow.
Many thanks for this. I have been using FilmicPro for a while but this Black Magic app looks very interesting - especially as my preferred editing solution is their DaVinci Resolve 18.6 on my MAC.
Hey Zdenka, Yep - another great video with a great pace (maybe a little fast on this one as you had an enormous amount of material to cover) So well scripted, filmed, and edited. I downloaded the Blackmagic camera app and followed along with you during your presentation. I have had Filmic for years but will now switch as I find the Blackmagic user interface so much easier for me. It's nice to have choices. Today I received my Hohem M6 gimble and have retired my other two(based on your earlier review) received my new iPhone 15 Pro Max yesterday and need to stop watching your great review while I am still solvent. With all this new gear and software I will be busy learning the intricacies for a good while. Thanks for your hard work. I should mention that I also love your accent and could listen to you read cookbooks.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience. Some people are pointing out that 15 promax is not fully working with Hoham yet. So if you find it as well, just give them a few weeks they need to catch up as that phone just came out. I’m quite sure they will bring new firmware updates very soon. Enjoy your new gear and thank you so much again for your support
Thank you for your job! Very useful and detailed tutorials! Could you make it clear what is the difference between FilmicPro plans? I would like to buy finally annual subscription, but stiil can't decide on plan. There are like Creator plan, Director plan and the most cheapest plan. What is the difference besides the price? Thanks in advance!
The app has been upgraded. You might want to check the new version: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-51acbHPPqlo.htmlsi=NCLgtTvAod-HC-wE
I’ve been trying this app and love it so much more than filmic. One thing I noticed is that the aspect ratio guides are not saved after filming, so the video is stuck at 16:9. Is there a way to have the aspect rations applied to the video while filming that perhaps I’ve overseen and not noticed?
I liked Filmic Pro for what it was... but ever since they went to the subscription model, I just... cant. Only sucky part is that I am on Android so I am currently hunting for something equivalent.
BMD has way more development resources. integration with other BMD video equipment and remote controll will follow. on the other hand a company like Filmic cannot survive without subscription models. as an early adopter for me FP legacy fullfilled all my needs. but now I'm with BMD what runs properly on my IP13 since V.1.1
What phone did you use to record this video? I'm about to buy one iPhone 12 PRO and I want to use Applr PRO RES mode, whereas it isn't supported to record on that mode natively.
When recording something and switching cameras during the recording on my iPhone 13 Pro, I've noticed that the Front camera footage is right-side up but the rear camera footage is upside down. But, it appears right-side up in the app while filming. 🤷🏻
Hi there....I want to use this black magic app with my iphone 15 pro max for the times when I can't use my Sony FX30...I like that I can record Pro Res LT to my Samsung SSD...question...if I wanted to use a gimbal like the DJI Osmo Mobile 6 or the Insta 360 Flow...can I use this app? those gimbals have their own apps...I'm not too familiar with gimbals for smartphones...thanks so much
You would be using gimbal to stabilize your footage with app like this. So you can use pretty much any gimbal. You would use gimbal app only if you want other things like motion, time, lapse, or tracking… I highly suggest looking into Hoham isteady m6 this one would allow you to do in this app, motion, time lapse, and also tracking
@@ZdenkaDarula thank you so much...the SSD is 60grms which added to the 15 pro max weight 221grms is over the Osmo mobile 6...almost at the limit of the Insta 360 flow too...hmm..maybe I can use a fast USB -C thumb drive instead...I will look into the Hoham for sure...I just like the compact (and cute?) factor of the Osmo mobile 6 and the flow...thanks so much. If not I will just use the phone on a mini tripod...
Filmic Pro can kiss my @. Paid quite a lot for this in 2017. Now they want more money. They can jump off at the next stop. Thanks for the tip on this one.
Yeah, a subscription based camera app is silly. Filmic Pro made a mistake by going prescription based. It doesn’t have to be free like Black Magic, a one time payment is reasonable.
I still don't understand why apple or blackmagic design didn't make the rec/pause function?. I think it is quite a useful function that is completely missing from apple phones. It is true that it can be solved after this in editing...but it wastes time
This looks great. The only feature missing for me is the ability to use your iPad as a controller and second screen, like Filmic Remote. If they can release an app that does that, then I’ll be switching over from Filmic Legacy. Thanks for a great video!
I can still use the Filmic Pro legacy app for free, so I'll stick to it. It has something I use a lot that BM doesn't offer: mirroring and controlling from another iPhone.
Do you need to set the setting in native 15 pro max like exposure and iso or do black magic does have have their own setting parameter and won’t affect by camera native setting?
Native camera app, and Blackmagic Cam app are two completely different applications. They don’t work together. so whatever you set up in one is not going to fact the other one at all.. they are completely separate.
Simple question can you take a still photo with the black magic camera app for iphone mine only does video if i cant take a photo with it its usless to me
Not being able to save preset settings sucks. What happens when you have a little studio at home? You gona have to keep up changing the settings to what you want
I stopped using filmic pro long time ago, when they brought the subscription model. I like this new app, although it has a few bugs/issues that I don’t see anyone addressing: 1) once you lock the shutter speed you no longer are able to set AUTO ISO. This is really bad, specially if you vlog a lot outside using your phone; 2) you are not able to name you video files, even if you save them into the library app; 3) it would be amazing if you could stream directly from the app to your social media
I stopped too when FilmicPro went to a subscription. Btw, 1) isn't correct you can lock the shutter and have auto iso but it isn't intuitive. Press the exposure compensation button (+/-) then select auto. The iso will be auto now.
Thank you for the short overview 🙂. I think for me as a beginner it is for sure the Blackmagic Camera App. Maybe I will consider Filmic sometime in the future, but we will see. And sure, if Filmic Pro would still be a onetime payment, then the chances would be much higher. but for a subscription there need to be enough time spent in the app to justify that.
You mean what phone case? I switch them all the time, so don’t look at my phone cover…. I am testing different lenses from different companies so I have to switch many times phone case…
Black Magic being free on iPhone only reminds me of the release of iPhone (1). If you wanted one you had to use AT&T exclusively for your carrier, prior to that all cell phones had the name of the carrier on them. Apple refused to put a service providers name on their product and AT&T agreed to a five year deal that was later reduced to two.
Great Review. I learned from you that you need an external mic in order to control the audio level. And don't forget to enable "headset mic". I did not notice that yet. That's why audio control was a disappointment for me so far. Still I'd like a limiter for my iphone mic.
Hi. I just received an iPhone 15 Pro Max and what I enjoy the most is being able to just plug my DJI maic receiver directly into the USB C on the iPhone and just start filming - no messing with cables etc. I plugged in the mic receiver and opened Blackmagic Settings and the mic appeared - selected in and could adjust the gain. Yeah, that's an expensive solution but works great.
I've been researching camera apps lately. I've installed the Black Magic Camera app because everyone says it's good, but it doesn't seem to autofocus when taking close-ups. I think I'm more comfortable with the original camera app for taking videos, but am I doing something wrong?
What would be the ideal settings for recording a sport demo video for my kid with Black Magic. Any recommendations thank you great video very informative.
Ahoj! I just tried it on an older 4th gen iPad pro, and it really surprised me. Using this app in combination with the *free* Davinci Resolve video editing app just made my iPad in to my new portable recording setup. On a newer iPhone or iPad, one could capture in ProRes RAW to an internal or external SSD really taking it to the next level. My opinion is that even of Filmic Pro had not gone to a subscription model, BlackMagic Design has a reputation of being not just a solid company, but one that releases a lot of updates on a regular basis and always comes out with something exciting. They'll eventually catch-up and pass Filmic in features and performance just like they did with Adobe's Premiere Pro and Final Cut NLEs.
Last week I used the Blackmagic App on my iPhone 14 pro Max. Unfortunately in one clip that i recorded, all got scrambled and pixelized in cyan color. Unfortunately it was in a "once in a lifetime" situation. I will certainly never ever use the app again.
Oh no… I’m sorry to hear this. Yes, this new app is only literally a few days old so it needs man fixes. I think that is the reason why it is a free app.
