I used to be a manager at game stop back in the early 2000's. We had to turn away every old console and games for trade in... I kept thinking, "this is really dumb for the future." Sure enough here we are 20+ years later... They could have cornered the market if they would have let us trade in. Very horrible business model.
They straight up offered me $16 for an Atomic purple N64 (clean) in box with all accessories, 4 controllers and 20 games.... I just laughed and walked out
@@Kiwizedteamk2 not holding the inventory... This isn't Indiana Jones. They could have continually sold the inventory. Instead they waited too long. It's nice to play catchup....but the outcome would have been better.
I feel like the Gamestop manager didn't believe you, and was like "go ahead and reship, but give him the worst version of each item we have in inventory."
>A store listed as "GameStop Retro" that actually isn't a "Retro" store anymore >A store not listed as "GameStop Retro" that actually is and has no console stock >A DSiXL that's completely uncleaned >An overpriced Wii U where the left stick doesn't work >A game that doesn't work >An overpriced Xbox without a functioning disc drive >A PS3+PSVita that didn't ship >Completely unacceptable customer service where the support people brush off your problem till your return policy window expires >A terrible condition, highly overpriced PSVita that's terribly packaged >The wrong PS3 model with a 3rd party controller, a gross old cable and the wrong display cable 24:10 I think it's very, very wrong to hold GameStop at a lower standard than other retailers, especially if they're making dedicated "retro" physical stores and charge more than premium for their turn-ins. This is basically a scam at this point.
@@kaiju_wastelandr7597 In store credit amounts for next to nothing because TOS almost always states you can't use it to get stuff for free. You can only use it on one of their overpriced, broken, gooch infested, unwiped consoles, but they'll still be making a profit out of it.
Gamestop is so mismanaged. They had retro stores everywhere. Yet they decided to stop selling and reselling older games and consoles. Now, they have no inventory for these "retro" stores, and stuff is even rarer to come by. Mom and pop stores have better selection and inventory. So sad to see.
Wow, GameStop is so incompetent. Sending broken untested stuff, not wiping people's personal data, and not even taking care to ship things properly. Ngl, they really lost respect for this one
I’ve witnessed some scummy things at GameStop, one of the worst ones was when there was this kid who went in to get a game with his I presume mother who didn’t speak much English and she was intentionally upsold by the manager so she paid extra for warranties, an edition upgrade, and a pre order on a different game without even knowing it. She came back with her I presume husband about 15 minutes later and they were needless to say NOT happy.
Its shitty that the company forces their employees to act like this, I would bring up stuff once and if i was told no id drop it, unless its a switch for a child then i would honestly tell the parent why the warranty is worth or at least was worth
GameStop, Please do a better job at cleaning and repairing your trade ins, Pricing the used games and consoles at a lower and decent prices and packaging your products for shipping. Also there customer service needs to BE BETTER.
4:50 Got a Wii U recently, you can control whatever is on the top screen with a Wii remote, Wii U Pro Controller, or anything aside from the GamePad, as that controls whatever is on the GamePad screen.
You can open the Xbox disc tray with a paper clip. There's a lil button on it you can press with a paper clip to open it when the regular button doesn't work. I gotta do this with mine occasionally
@@Sir...... quick question, what's a quick way to clean something like that? I have a towel dispenser at work that's slipping, and I've never encountered this before. 😅
GameStop now is essentially a toy store and Pokemon card shop They don’t even TRY to sell new games. When I go there to get a new game they say “it’s out of stock” Even brand new games like Madden or FIFA It’s easier to just get a gift card and download the new games
@@therealytshadow1750 same thing with me I preordered FC 25 and NBA 2K a month in advance. Release day comes they claim no stock or sold out or UPS is gonna be late I canceled the preorder and went to Best Buy When you walk into GameStop all you see now is toys and cards. They don’t even pretend to be a game store anymore
gamestop retro will fail, the older game systems are going up in price and why would people go get $50 for a ps2 when you can sell it online used for $80 or more
Good thing about that PS2 you bought is that you can soft mod it with Free McBoot and if you were to ever do that i would recommend the SD memory card thing for storing all your legit owned games because the USB port on all PS2's are USB1.1 which is technically CD speeds so DVD games will stutter, and the memory card slot is closer to DVD speeds.
i got a display unit ps2 + an og controller + kingdom hearts for $90 (before tax), the console was cleaned inside and out and fully functional. if you're buying from them i'd highly recommend getting a console on display as they seem to be much higher quality
Gotta watch with GameStop and retro stuff. As a former manager I can say that we used to get fake retro stuff in our inventory from the warehouse all the time. Especially when it comes to Gameboy games. I will never ship at a GameStop ever again. They treat their staff like trash and everything from the top down is mismanaged and disorganized
This video nicely summarizes why I haven't considered Game Stop as a legit source of games or hardware for over a decade... barely above scam level, useless "customer support", barely competitive pricing...
Nah, that's BS. Don't defend them this hard. Those consoles were A, Not working. B, Not working, and they were filthy and not even data wiped. This is beyond trashy quality service. I have a better chance to find a better deal on E-bay than at GameStop.
Man working in a gamestop must be amazing... not many customers depending on where you live so you dont have to do much And crazy how people (including gamestop) want 200-300 for a ducking 3ds -_-
You're probably right, but that also means your manager will be breathing down your neck making sure you push every new product to every customer that comes in.
I worked at one for 2 years and yeah of the pay was straight garbage i wouldve stayed. It was just me and one other co-worker playing switch games with the occasional customer
Not a GameStop, but another game store that I worked at: While not very busy, GOD they try their hardest to MAKE you busy. Testing/cleaning cartridges daily, rearranging stock and inventory counts. "iF yOu HaVE tImE tO LeAn, yOu hAvE tImE to ClEaN"
People are asking silly money for them that's not the same as them costing that much. I bought a psp 1000 and psp 3000 both cost less than $40. Both of them in good condition no scratches at all on screen. Didn't even take much looking around to get them
What We All Learned Is GameStop Needs To Clean There Systems Without Magic Eraser, Needs To Wipe The System From People’s Accounts ..Return All Game Consoles Except PS2 ,COD On DS Is Trash 😂 …… The The PS2 Packaging Was A1 That Blew My Mind!
I have given up on used game stores. They used to be alright but it’s SO bad for consumers now they just don’t make sense. Online classifieds on FB marketplace and EBay as well as some conventions are the way to go. Back in the SNES/Genesis days my older brothers friends rented out the corner of the local gas station to run a used game store. It was SO cool and then GameStop/hollywood video came around and took over the market.
I bought a new 3ds xl during pro-week and battery was swollen af so i immediately took that off and bought another one of Amazon and was surprised how decent it looked. Most of the items are shipped from stores and i don’t think employees give a shit anymore
Yeah they do that deliberatly in the UK moving you out the return window, in the uk we *redact* them and their families. In the US however you can sue them.
I work for a store that takes in games and game consoles and I'm in charge of refurbishing and packaging those consoles and I always make sure EVERYTHING works before putting them out to sell. I would have never put out any of those consoles in that condition. Silver lining as far as the original Xbox goes, there's a small pin hole next to the disc drive that you can stick a paper clip in and it will slightly push open the disc tray to where you can physically open it. It's a simple fix of replacing the disc drive belt and it should open up no problem after. The belt gets stretched over time and won't have enough grip to open or close the tray.
My local GameStop accepted retro games and consoles. They had tons of consoles. Then when the GameStop Retro initiative started, they moved all of the retro inventory to a store 15-20 minutes away. What’s the point of putting more emphasis on “retro” if you were already accepting retro hardware and software and now only certain “special” stores do???? GameStop is so mismanaged. I still get my physical releases from them, in no small part because the Pro membership pays for itself with its $5/month coupons, but I don’t know how much longer I can turn a blind eye to how incompetent they are. But I also like supporting my local stores and their employees. It’s not as black and white as saying “GameStop sucks stop supporting them.”
One quick question: The Injustice box had a "Pegi 16" label on it...isn't that the overseas version of the ratings system? Which would make that game in the PAL format? Is this just a case of it being region locked (are WiiU's region locked?), or am I barking up the wrong tree here? By the by...if it is in fact region locked, it was 100% the responsibility of Game Stop to list it as such to keep purchases like this from happening.
I recently left the company after being there for 5 years, personally non of that should have been sent out. There are very few employees left who actually care anymore, the company does not put anything back into their employees anymore. I cant tell you how many times I've seen employees do underhanded shit and get praised for it but the employees who try to do what's best for the customer get written up.
I just bought a refurbished Vita over here in the Netherlands. It was advertised to be in "as new" condition and it actually was. It also had the advertised 8Gb memory card (which had not been formatted and still contained stuff from the previous owner). Unfortunately, it was sold as model PCH-1004 so the European model with OLED display but it actually was the PCH-2004 LCD model. Could have been far worse given what I've seen on this channel. What am I going to play? Uncharted: Golden Abyss. After that I'll try custom firmware to use a Vita2SD adapter.
Og Xbox disc drive is prone to function poorly. I believe there is a quick release thing that you can open with a paper clip. My og Xbox was taken good care of, but had the same disc drive issue
6:20 Yes and no The game does have to install some data from the disc into system memory (this is exclusive to BOTW on WiiU) but that is not what is happening here, it is in fact downloading an update - you are still able to download updates for games you own as well as games as long as you bought em before the eshop closed Same applies to other online stores that have been shut down
He is also wrong about COD's control scheme You move around with either the dpad or ABXY buttons, and you shoot with either trigger, this is so lefties can also play the game
Those disc drives ALWAYS stick on the old Xbox. You should hit eject and then smack the system WHILE ITS TRYING TO EJECT. It does no good to hit it if the motor isn’t trying to open at the same time. Totally normal on those systems.
4:46 This is correct behavior for a Wii U. The gamepad can only control the Home Menu when it is on its own screen like how Austin did. The Home Menu can be controlled on the TV with external controllers like this Pro Controller or WIimotes
To see GameStop’s incredibly poor quality compared to the retro-resell chain stores in the UK is shocking. It can’t be that hard to quality test products and actually send the correct ones (and our stores at least have warranties and return policies they actually stick to)
I think it's just hard to centralize the retro gaming market, even as a retailer. Sourcing stuff is the biggest problem since it's all out of production, so stock will vary wildly along with quality of said stock as it's all dependent on what individuals, rather than manufacturers or distributors, are bringing in. I don't think there's ever really going to be a single great place to go retro shopping; you're always going to have to shop around and probably end up buying from an individual (usually online) rather than from any store. All that being said, any business selling secondhand stuff should always at least clean their merchandise before putting it up for resale.
I really don't want the future of gaming to be all digital but that kind of looks like the way the gaming industry is headed especially looking at companies like Sony, Nintendo, and Valve for example where they are basically saying that when you buy a game you are just buying a license to play the game and don't actually own the game. If all digital really is the future then GameStop really needs to get their shit together with retro games cause there won't be a need for a physical third party store location if all the games are just digital and are only being sold on the first party digital store front like PSN, Nintendo E-Shop, and the Microsoft Store.
So I recently ran into this recently and was looking around for a PS vita memory card cuz a grabbed a few of the PS vitas one for modding one for classic vita games at some local pawn shops. The one local GameStop said no dice, but the other one explained that his store was mainly around the collectibles and told me the location of a store that “specializes in retro” …. Which I think this is such a new thing that they are not done converting. That GameStop employee actually told me that they would take the older stuff in but it was being shipped to stores like that retro GameStop. So I think all this is in limbo and many stores don’t know what’s going on yet and some are newly being converted to retro stores 🤔 Sadly I had to overnight a memory card and SD2vita off Amazon and couldn’t get one locally lol 😂 Edit: Side note the Vita I grabbed from the one pawn show was amazing and in mint condition! I’ve been playing it loads.
I don't blame gamestop for the wiiu game failing, I've had several spotless wiiu games just give up even though theyre spotless, age just destroys them unfortunately
I have recoil from like early 2000 at the latest been rolled over has a crack, works fine on a modern PC, apart from the ui is fainbow coloured and that could be a software reason, because the game plays fine, cant record it though.
that is the thing to me all this old games consoles you name them are so old that many of them are not even alive anymore due to poor places that those stuff sit in before gamestop or any other company can get there hands on them which is also why not many retro games and consoles live anymore becasuse people either collect them as a collector item or they jsut store them somewhere where they just rot away over time
14:55 Ah the days when your music collection would be your CDs plus a selection of whatever you copied off your friend's flash drive. I'm guessing that they had a friend who was into CCR but couldn't spell
I have found a complete in box og xbox as a trashman that was a good deal. disc drive opened but didnt read cds so once replaced it looking 100% hardly used
I recently picked up a used Atari VCS and the data wasn't wiped. And it's password protected to wipe it (something they could have asked the seller) I managed to get it to works but some other account is on there and it takes up space. I'm using it, but it's not "mine" lol
All the messed consoles honestly came from stores cause a lot of them don’t pack it right or clean the ps2 came from a warehouse the amibo mishap definitely came from a store
It's not a straight scam, it's just weaponized incompetence. When you have roles like 3rd keys and ASMs getting paid the same as they did like 15 years ago (~$10/hr) and threatened to get fired every day over metrics, then why would anyone care about the experience for the customer.
Their really just not competitive at all. They offer $20 for a psp and good luck finding anything better than a psp 1000 on even ebay for less than $60-70+. they need to use the consumer market so people might go there and give inventory and trade. The standards/prices have raised for buyers and sellers, they cant expect people to give them a 10 year old console for $20, when they actively go for 70. Maybe 40-50 and take less profits to boost retro reputation
So considering one of the Wii u sticks didn't work how much did he actually go into checking all ports? Doesn't matter if the first player controller works if player two doesn't. With the stick non-functional and there not being an SD card with a few of them what are the chances they don't actually work?
the xbox will probably work, the belt that extends and retracts the drive is probably broken, a really easy fix. i feel like this is meant more for people handy in repairing electronics not people trying to get an easy good deal
