Is Glue Stronger Than Wood? No!

You cannot simply say that glue is stronger than wood (or that wood is stronger than glue) because wood is not a homogenous material. It is a composite, made up long fibers held together by a glue-like polymer. The fibers are very strong; the polymer is relatively weak. More important, the fibers give the wood “grain”, and this unique composite structure makes the wood stronger parallel to the grain than it is across it. The strength of a glue joint depends on the orientation of the wood grain in the adjoining parts much more than it does on the glue itself.

Many men of Boomer generation DID learn this stuff in woodshop classes. Then these great shop classes slowly disappeared. My high-school taught auto mechanic, electrical, wood working. My older sister was the FIRST female EVER in the history of that school to take woodworking. A's on all tests and projects. (Her male classmates hated her. We didn't even have a dad growing up) Another female student was also THE FIRST FEMALE to venture into Auto mechanics. They both graduated in 1972. The TRADES are so necessary. All of them need to offered in Middle and High school. What I mentioned earlier plus plumbing, welding, landscaping.

stop following YOUNG youtubers. im a young one, but ive learned to follow proper professionals not Social Media Influencers. like doctors, lawyers, craftsmen, musicians, and even if they dont have a degree TRUE hobbists and theorists. Legend of Zelda, Pokefans, Film Theorists, Game Theorists, Matt Patt, heck even economists (but thats pushing back into speculation, cuz even with degress they cant predict the future) but yeah, FOLLOW PASSIONATE FOLK. if they truly love what they do rather than chasing views for likes, comments, subscribers, and doing "trendy" stuff. so yeah, even old youtubers are ... dare I say it... COOL in that regard 😎. cuz my 34 year old self is gonna be 60 years old one day. and I hope RU-vid always stays true to its roots. A platform for folks who love their hobbies. Music Lovers, Game lover, heck even now True PhD Doctors are posting content. now its not just laymen with speculation, but true degree holding folks. this is what reddit had (i think, idk. i heard its also full of self proclaimed "professionals" who legit had zero credentials.) but yeah, I Love youtube for this reason.

You cannot simply say that glue is stronger than wood (or that wood is stronger than glue) because wood is not a homogenous material. It is a composite, made up long fibers held together by a glue-like polymer. The fibers are very strong; the polymer is relatively weak. More important, the fibers give the wood “grain” and this unique composite structure makes the wood stronger parallel to the grain than it is across it. But nobody has ever made that claim, making this video pointless. Not one person have ever claimed that wood glue is stronger than wood grain itself. Your clickbait game is top notch tho. Lol The claim is that a glue joint is stronger than the lignin bonds between grains, which you verified in the beginning of your video, and is very, very true. Even without the joinery, those joints will still break along the lignin when stressed, not along the glue joint.

Glue 2 boards together along the long grain and then whack the joint with a hammer. The glue joint won’t break-the fibers will split first. That’s where the “glued is stronger than wood” claim came from. It doesn’t work using end grain though.

Most welcome. Sometimes it's just fun to know stuff.

This is one of the best explanations I've ever heard. My mom taught me a lot about wood and how it works, but a lot of times the reasons were shown but not given words. So I could visualize why joints work, but now I've got words to explain it.

Also don't forget you increase the surface area for the glue to bond to.

I wish wood work made me as happy as it makes him when he’s just talking about it

This is honestly the first short I’ve come across in probably a year that was actually helpful or worth watching to the end.

That has to be the most informative, concise and useful 60 seconds that I've had the pleasure of viewing on RU-vid to date. I wonder, if all RU-vid videos were as concise as this, how many gazillions of kWh of energy would be saved by the reduced amount of disk storage required...

This man taught me things about wood I never thought I would need to know, but became so invested so learn it in under 5 minutes.

This makes so much more sense to me now! I've been working with wood for ages but I didn't realize that's exactly why my joints weren't holding how I want!

I don't know what is but this guy reminds me so much of all the amazing people that use to be on TV in the 80s & 90s like Carl Sagan, LeVar Burton and Mr Rogers and Bill Nye. I love this guy!
